The Weekly look at the local real estate market

On the up VICTORIA’S construction industry continues to power ahead with the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing an 11 per cent increase in construction activity throughout the state in 2015. This was the strongest growth in construction work done by any state in Australia and the state government said it was also great news for jobs. By comparison, as Victoria bounds ahead, the corresponding figure across Australia fell by 3.8 per cent. Construction work, which comprises work done on total building and engineering construction, grew in Victoria by 1.1 per cent over the December quarter. This was again the strongest result of any state and a reflection of Victoria’s increasing economic momentum. Victorian total building work grew by 1.6 per cent over the quarter and by 12.0 per cent in 2015 – well above the national average of 8.0 per cent. Victorian growth in engineering construction over the year of 11.0 per cent was also in stark contrast to a national fall in activity of 14.7 per cent. This is the latest in string of economic indicators that reinforce the underlying strength of the Victorian economy, as well as the returning confidence to the labour market.

Since the Andrews Labor government was elected, Victoria has created 68,700 new jobs, and the number of unemployed Victorians has dropped by 9200. Treasurer Tim Pallas said the figures showed that Victoria is fast emerging as the engine room of construction activity across Australia. “And where there is construction growth, there are jobs and robust economic activity,” he said. “The Andrews Labor government is committed to continuing this trend with one of the biggest infrastructure programs in the state’s history.” The Housing Industry Association has released its 2016 edition of Housing Australia’s Future, a comprehensive analysis of residential building requirements out to 2050, both nationally and in each state. Modelling by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed Australia’s population broke through 24 million just after midnight last Monday, and after many years where new housing supply has fallen short of demographic demand, housing affordability has become a perennial problem in many parts of the country. “With a population set to reach 25 million in just a few years, policy makers must make planning for the nation’s future housing requirements a higher priority,” HIA economist Geordan Murray said.

GROWING: Statistics show an increase in construction.

Future housing needs depend mostly on population growth, but housing requirements will also be affected by changes in our standard of living and the need to replace existing dwelling stock. The Housing Australia’s Future report presents a discussion of new homebuilding requirements under three different population growth scenarios, and considers the impact of alternate income growth projections. “Depending on the pace of population increase and improvements in living standards, as many as 250,000 new dwellings could be required annually,” Mr Murray said. LEGISLATION governing the way notices are issued under the Residential Tenancies Act is in line for an update in coming months. The Victorian legislation requiring a notice of entry be given to tenants by electronic communication is due to be clarified, confirming notices can be sent electronically. REIV chief executive officer

Enzo Raimondo said the important clarification, currently before Parliament, would be beneficial to all stakeholders. “Mail can be delayed, which puts tenants at risk,” Mr Raimondo said. “This clarification gives certainty to all parties, and will enable greater communication between stakeholders. “Timely and effective communication between tenants, property managers and landlords will go a long way towards improving these important relationships.” Given changes to Australia Post’s mail service earlier this year – which has added considerably to postal delivery times – the REIV believes electronic delivery of notices will improve communication between key stakeholders. “The clarification is a positive one for all parties, including tenants. An email allows for a ‘read receipt’ to ensure that the notification is received,” he said. “With a posted letter, it is far more difficult to know whether it has reached its intended destination.”

Waste back on agenda

By peter kennedy

THE City of Greater Bendigo will move one step closer to the introduction of a municipalitywide organics collection service at next week’s council meeting, with councillors set to debate how the new service will operate. Council wants to implement the organics collection service during the 2016-2017 financial year, and will look to use the results of a trial conducted in

about 2760 homes in Strathdale, Kennington, East Bendigo and White Hills. The planned introduction of the new service is expected to cost households approximately $63 extra per annum, with expectations a fortnightly organics collections service will be introduced to complement the existing weekly household waste service. The trial service involved fortnightly waste collections and an

alternating fortnightly organics collection service, which was estimated to have an ongoing cost of $35 per household per year. It’s understood concerns about odour, highlighted in the results of a survey conducted among households in the trial area, have contributed to the consideration of a revised schedule of collection services in 201617. There is also strong support from customers of local com-

pany Greenaway Bins, who have provided a green waste collection service to Greater Bendigo residents for more than seven years. They claim an effective education and awareness program among households, coupled with the introduction of composting and worm farm services, would dramatically reduce the level of contamination of material collected as part of existing green waste services, and help reduce the need for the broader and more

expensive organics collection. The company has previously stated it believed it could provide a user pays system for all Bendigo households, and that allowing for improved economies of scale, the service would be competitive. Greenaway Bins spokesman Anthony Janssen said he looked forward to the opportunity to be part of the expected tender process for the broader organics collection service, due to be considered by councillors next week.

Culture festival on track for success As the lyrics from the Paul Kelly/ Kev Carmody song say, from little things big things grow, and this is very much the case of the Bendigo Festival of Cultures. What started in 2001 as a small group of locals celebrating their ethnicity has turned into one of Bendigo’s major festivals, almost on a par with the Bendigo Easter Festival. The late Heidi Teague, a spirited and community minded individual from Germany, started what was then referred to as the Bendigo Regional Ethnic Communities Council 15 years ago. The current festival director and executive officer of Loddon Campaspe Multi Cultural Services Noemi Cummings joined LCMS in 2006 and directed her first festival in 2007. “It was certainly a lot smaller, it was celebrated only for one day and it was just LCMS,” she said. “We didn’t think of sponsor-

ships back then as the support was from volunteers and community groups. “There was only food, music and dances from around the world, it was delightful though, the thing I miss more is the sort of home-made food we used to enjoy at the events. “The different communities prepared their traditional foods and we used to enjoy it freely, now all the regulations and permits have made it a prohibitive exercise and we can only organise food through local restaurants.” According to Noemi what was once a small celebration of diversity, has now become a huge festival which embraces hundreds of people both as participants and observers. Also involved behind the scenes is the small army of volunteers who ensure the festival’s success.

There is also a team of graphic designers, the communications team, artistes, contractors, photographers, speakers and other specialists. The festival has also reached the stage where various organisations take on responsibility for particular programs. The Bendigo library for example has an impressive calendar of events within the festival. Outside the Square is hosting a community discussion at the Morley Johnson Building and the schools are getting acts ready for Harmony Day, New events include the Malaysian night, the Japanese Anime film night to be held at the Bendigo Cinema and the Saturday music concert which will be performed across three different stages from 11am to 11pm on the Saturday. Apart from the growing number of migrants who have

Peter Kelly

come to Bendigo, the festival has flourished because of the ongoing support of the City of Greater Bendigo and the Victorian Multicultural Commission. Other major sponsors include the state government, premier’s department and Citizenship OMAC. “New sponsors such as Arteria and Hazeldene are realising the benefits of supporting the festival,” Noemi says. “And by doing so they are supporting cultural diversity and social cohesion. “The benefits are not just for migrants and members of new emerging communities but for the whole community.” The Bendigo Festival of Cultures runs from March 12 to March 20. Federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters says she will step in to secure more local manufacturing jobs in the wake of yesterday’s government Defence White Paper release. Ms Chesters has welcomed the federal governments’ continued commitment to the Bendigo manufactured Hawkei Light Protected Vehicle announced in the white paper, but will meet also with German submarine manufacturer thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to discuss their naval industry proposition for Australia. “These projects have a large price tag. The Australia’s new fleet of 12 submarines will cost at least $50 billion just to build, and big spends like this should go toward securing and creating Australian jobs,” she said. The tkMSA team has invited Bendigo manufacturer, Keech 3D to join them in their bid to build the 12 next generation Australian submarines. Ms Chesters said she will focus on its commitment to Bendigo manufacturing and local industry involvement. “I am keen to discuss the potential job opportunities this partnership could create in Bendigo and central Victoria,” Ms Chesters said. “It’s an exciting opportunity for Bendigo and it’s a huge tick of approval for local defence manufacturing capability.” The Keech 3D team is world class when it comes to advanced manufacturing and 3D printing having already designed and manufactured prototype parts for the Thales Hawkei protected mobility vehicle. “This Hawkei contract helps secure 170 directly employed Bendigo Thales jobs and hundreds of supply chain jobs,” she said. “Thales Australia’s Bushmaster and Hawkei demonstrate that Australian defence industry can produce not only world-class equipment for the Australian Defence Force, but also a vibrant export industry. Nationals Senator for Victoria, Senator Bridget McKenzie applauded the 2016 Defence White Paper as a significant document for Australia and regional Victoria. “Many of the regions throughout Victoria will play a vital role in delivering Australia’s capabilities detailed in the White Paper. She said many regions throughout Victoria would play a vital role in delivering Australia’s capabilities detailed in the White Paper. – Steve Kendall

Showies must go on

EASTER revellers have won their battle to have carnival rides return to the 2016 Hazeldene’s Bendigo Easter Festival. As revealed by the Weekly on Monday, the return of the popular rides to the Tom Flood Sports Centre follows a one year absence in 2015 and a strong campaign from supporters of the carnival. Bendigo Easter Festival Reference Group chairman Rod Fyffe said he was pleased that both the City of Greater Bendigo and the Victorian Showmen’s Guild had reached a mutual agreement regarding site fees for Tom Flood Sports Centre. In 2015 the Bendigo Easter Festival (BEF) proposed a $4,000 increase in site fees for Tom Flood Sports Centre to $16,000 in an effort to recoup the actual cost to the festival of staging the carnival component.

“The BEF never wanted to make a profit, we simply wanted to recover the logistical costs of preparing and maintaining the site and cleaning it up at the end of the festival,” Cr Fyffe said. “This year we have identified a number of savings related to site preparation and clean up, power and risk management and have been able to offer the site to the Victorian Showmen’s Guild for $13,500 – a $2,500 reduction on the $16,000 site fee that was proposed in 2015. “In addition the showmen will this year supply their own power generators and a full time site manager. These two measures alone have allowed the BEF to reduce its cost burden and offer the site at a reduced fee to the Showmen’s Guild. “The Bendigo Easter Festival and the Victorian Showmen’s Guild

spokesperson Charlie Miller said operators were looking forward to returning to the Bendigo Easter Festival in 2016. “It’s one of Victoria’s oldest and most enduring festivals with a long history and we want to continue to be part of that history,” Mr Miller said. President Max Laurie said he was pleased the Showmen’s Guild had received so much support from the local community in the campaign to have the carnival return to Bendigo, and singled out residents Kaylene O’Brien and Simon Mulqueen for special thanks and appreciation. “We are very happy to be back and doing the Easter Festival in Bendigo,” Mr Laurie said. “And we also want to thank the Bendigo public for their support and to let everyone know it is greatly appreciated.”

Leach puts hat in ring for council

EPPALOCK Ward councillor Helen Leach has confirmed she will contest this year’s City of Greater Bendigo council elections. Cr Leach was elected to council in October 2012 as one of three councillors representing Eppalock Ward. “I have gained enormous satisfaction from representing constituents in my ward, and throughout the City of Greater Bendigo, many of whom have asked me to nominate again,” Cr Leach said. “I believe important issues that will challenge the next council, and which I have and will continue to support, are ensuring rates are not increased above the CPI, ratepayers receiving best value and genuine representation from their ward councillors.” Cr Leach said making sure “real action” was being taken to catch up on outstanding roads and drainage works across the municipality was also crucial, as well as councillors acting with honesty, integrity and diligence. She said council needed to support private enterprise in order to maximise growth and jobs, and that she believed it was important for rural towns and communities out of Bendigo to receive a

“fair go”. Acceptance that there was a strong desire by many citizens for a “shared national identity”, as opposed to multiculturalism, was also critical, she said. Cr Leach is involved in the community through volunteering, and has worked for St Vincent de Paul for more than 24 years. She has also volunteered at Bethlehem Home for the Aged, and as a volunteer fundraising assistant for the Gianna Centre among other organisations. Cr Leach was one of five City of Greater Bendigo councillors responsible for ensuring an independent review of council’s operations was held, resulting in a total of 69 recommendations that have set new benchmarks for council. Cr Leach said it was important to note that most recommendations had been implemented, with considerable savings and efficiency having been achieved for ratepayers. “I look forward to again representing Eppalock Ward in the next four year term,” Cr Leach said. The City of Greater Bendigo council election will be determined on October 22, 2016.

ONE of central Victoria’s largest employers has hit back at claims it had engaged in unlawful practices involving contractors and employees. In a statement released yesterday, management of Lockwoodbased Hazeldene’s said the company was appalled at what is said was “continued defamatory and false allegations” made by the National Union of Workers, which the company said was more akin to an attempt to increase low levels of union membership. The NUW continued its at-

that the company was exceeding its legal and ethical obligations. “Hazeldene’s prides itself on communicating regularly and openly with its contractors and their employees, to ensure they are aware of their obligations and rights. These sessions are interpreted as required,” the company said. “The Hazeldene family takes its responsibility to the Bendigo community seriously and find these continued outrageous comments offensive which has the potential to unfairly damage the business and its 760 direct employees.”

O what a great week MORE than 1300 new Bendigo La Trobe students have seen in the 2016 academic year at OWeek. The festivities started on Tuesday with a civic welcome, market day and lunch on the campus oval, followed by three days of tours and information sessions to equip students with the knowledge they’ll need to begin their courses next week. Head of campus Rob Stephenson encouraged the wider Bendigo community to join the university in welcoming the students. “Each new student was given a free La Trobe T-shirt during OWeek, so they should be pretty visible in the community in their grey and white shirts,” he said. “We really want students to know the university is a proud part of the community, which has many flow-on benefits to their education.” O-Week activities backed up this reputation. Mr Stephenson joined City of Greater Bendigo mayor Rod Fyffe and Bendigo Student Association president Calin Harvie in officially welcoming students to the university at the civic ceremony. “O-Week is a very important activity for first-year students,” Mr Stephenson said.

It is a very important part of ensuring they are equipped for a positive start to their university studies. “The quality of our courses and the appeal of Bendigo’s regional lifestyle are drawcards for all students. These things are combining to put Bendigo on the international map for university studies.”

ACCESS EARNS STARS THE latest star ratings show Access Australia Group’s Disability Employment Services is continuing to offer excellent services to job seekers throughout central Victoria. In the last set of ratings the group was rated five stars, meaning that it is not only the highest performing provider of the disability management service program in Bendigo, but also in the top 10 per cent of high performing disability employment providers in Australia. The star ratings, which are released by the Department of Social Services every three months, are based on the number job outcomes the organisation achieve. These outcomes include finding and maintaining ongoing employment and further education and training. Ratings are also based on the sustainability of employment, with longer employment placements generating a higher rating.

RSL plans ahead

PLANS to rejuvenate the Soldiers Memorial Hall in Pall Mall, including a new state-of-the-art gallery, are taking a big leap forward with applications to be lodged for planning and heritage permits. The lodging of the permits this week is part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s plan to have the project “shovel-ready” in order to have the greatest chance of success in funding applications. The total project is expected to cost $4.2 million and the works will be staged over a number of years. The council has committed $800,000 and with the RSL will apply for state and federal grants. Planning and development director, Prue Mansfield, said the project aligns well with the council’s vision of Greater Bendigo – working together to be Australia’s most liveable regional city. “Working together with the RSL, the council is seeking to completely rejuvenate this iconic building, which sits in one of Bendigo’s most iconic locations,” Ms Mansfield said. “This exciting project would see a magnificent heritage asset used to recognise the contribution of service people to our

NEW LOOK: An artists interpretation of the Soldiers Memorial Hall. country and community in a contemporary way. It would feature state-of-theart interactive displays and a new gallery space capable of housing touring exhibitions from the War Memorial in Canberra. “This would help boost economic activity by adding to Bendigo’s list of attractions and provide a place where local residents can learn more about their region’s history. Projects like this add to our liveability by making our city a better and more interesting place to be.” Hall redevelopment working group chair Paul Penno, said: “The upgrade

of this building will be vital to maintaining the memories of those from our community who paid the supreme sacrifice in war, those that survived and suffered and those that are serving still will be honourably remembered and acknowledged. “The RSL is committed to assisting and will in the near future release details of a public fundraising campaign to encourage the people of Bendigo to once again make a financial commitment to restore and enhance this magnificent war memorial.” The proposed new gallery would be built at the

rear of the existing Memorial Hall following the removal of the 1934 fibro stage and toilet additions. It would be located at ground floor level, with the storage and preparation areas within the upper level roof space. Conservation works to the original building would include total roof replacement and a return to the original stone coloured finish. Exhibition spaces within the existing heritage building would also be upgraded, with the restoration of much of the building back to its original design.

Looking for Itt

THE Broadway adaptation of The Addams Family is coming to town, courtesy of the Bendigo Theatre company – and now is your chance to be part of the show. Actors who are keen to perform at the new Ulumbarra Theatre in July are encouraged to audition. The Bendigo Theatre Company are looking for Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch, as well as 20 other cast members and ensemble players... and who is going to play Cousin Itt?

Auditions are being held on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3 at the BTC Arts Shed in Allingham Street, Bendigo. The Addams Family will be staged at Ulumbarra from Thursday, June 30 until Sunday, July 3, with both matinee and evening performances, and this year the Bendigo Theatre Company will be bringing cutting edge digital staging technology. “There are some tremendous character roles in this production, roles that you can really make

your mark,” co-director Mandy Ellison said. “If you’d like an opportunity to step on stage at the wonderful Ulumbarra Theatre, in a familyfavourite show, we would love to hear from you.” An information session will be held on Sunday, March 6 from 2pm to 3pm to speak to the production team about the show. For more details about the roles available, the auditions or the production, visit bendigotheatrecompany.org or log on to the BTC’s facebook page.

The grand scale of the Vahland Drinking Fountain has been revealed for the first time in 110 years as the campaign to restore the historically significant feature kicks into top gear. Greater Bendigo councillor Peter Cox said a large section of the 19th century fountain had been temporarily reassembled at the city depot to show the height and scale of the structure, which council hopes to fully restore and locate at the Rosalind Park end of Bull Street. “The public appeal has so far raised $173,500 in cash and in-kind donations,” Cr Cox said. “This is a fantastic effort, but more contributions are needed if we are to reach the $250,000 in cash and in kind support needed to complete this important project.” Cr Cox said it was a great pleasure to have the German Heritage Society president Bob Schulz at this week’s special event as the society had made a $20,000 contribution to the restoration fund. Also present was Bendigo Historical Society president Jim Evans, whose society has also been a fantastic supporter of the project. “Anyone wanting to support the restoration project can make a tax free donation at any of the nine local Bendigo Bank branches,” he said. Installed in 1881, the fountain sat at the junction of Bridge Street and Pall Mall and together with the Alexandra Fountain was intended to visually balance Pall Mall, while also forming a triangle of fountains with the Cascades in Rosalind Park. Vahland designed all three water features.

The Bendigo Health-sponsored Healthiest Schools award drew a large number of entries from schools across the region who are all undertaking some outstanding work in the area of promoting the good health message in their school community. This year, innovation in school health will also be acknowledged. The Sports Star awards were first handed out in March 1965, when the event, then known as the Caltex Sports Star Awards, was held at the studios of BCV-8 in Lily Street, Bendigo. Founding members of the Sports Star committee were Cyril Michelsen, the former editor of the Bendigo Advertiser, Alan Jenkins, general manager of the Bendigo Advertiser, Harold Griffiths – independent, Dick Turner – independent and Basil Ashman – independent.

After 51 years Basil Ashman remains a vital part of the Sports Star committee, and a much loved figure in our local community. The first recipient of the Sports Star of the Year Awards was Eaglehawk cyclist Frank McCaig, and the McCaig family remain strong supporters of the Sports Star awards, and of sport in Bendigo. This year, the Sports Star committee will also launch the Sports Star Foundation, a new initiative created to provide even more valuable support to young athletes on their journey to becoming champion athletes and the stars of tomorrow. To be officially launched by City of Greater Bendigo mayor Rod Fyffe, the Sports Star Foundation is a program aimed at increasing the amount of support these awards, and the Bendigo community, provides to assisting in the development of local athletes and their sporting careers.

Bendigo’s 38TH BATTALION

Marking 100 years IT is 100 years since military history was made in Bendigo with the formation of the 38th Battalion. The battalion was formed on March 1, 1916 at a camp on the Epsom Racecourse. The 38th Battalion’s involvement in the war in Europe was of special significance to the community and the surrounding areas from which the men of the battalion were recruited. On Tuesday, 100 years to the day since the formation, the 38th Infantry Battalion Association Bendigo and the City of Greater Bendigo council

will commemorate the 100th anniversary. They will remember fallen family members and comrades of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions. “The impact of the loss of life on families and friends left behind and their descendants, particularly in a community which compared with today was quite small, was massive,” association president John Munro said. The council will start the 100th anniversary formalities with a civic reception and then the 38th association will follow with a commemora-

tive service held at the forecourt of the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Hall, Pall Mall at 11.30am. Following the service, members and their families will have some time to observe the 38th Infantry Battalion’s King’s Colours that were returned to the Soldiers Memorial Hall in July 2015. “During the service held at the Soldiers Memorial Hall, Pall Mall we will be honoured to have the presence of Charles Davis as our guest speaker,” Mr Munro said. “Mr Davis is the grandson of the first ap-

pointed commanding officer, Mr Charles Herbert Davis, of the 38th Battalion in 1916 at the Epsom Racecourse.” “I also have family history dating back to World War I with an uncle and cousin leaving to join the ranks of the 38th Battalion in 1916. “So I will stand proud, not only as the president of the 38th Infantry Battalion, but of all of the men that will be standing with me and of all of the men that will be in our thoughts that we lost in the time of war and that we have since lost over the years.”

WITH HONOUR: The 38th colours were moved to the memorial hall in 2015.

Western Front was a proving ground AFTER training in Australia and Britain, the 38th Battalion crossed over to France in November 1916 and moved into the trenches of the Western Front for the first time on December 1. During the winter of 191617 the 3rd Division was heavily involved in raiding German trenches. This type of action was always brutal and very risky with losses on both sides high, but the men of the battalion were up to it. The 38th fought in its first major battle at Messines, in Belgium, between June 7-9, 1917. It fought in a the battle of Broodseinde on October 4, and the battle of Passchendaele on October 12. Broodseinde was a success, but the 38th still suffered 29 per cent casualties.

Passchendaele on the other hand was a disaster, it was the 38th’s most costly operation of the war, resulting in 62 per cent of the unit killed or wounded. The 38th participated in its last major action of the war in late September and early October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the defences of the Hindenburg Line along the St Quentin Canal. The 38th Battalion was disbanded in April 1919. The battalion was reformed and disbanded many times over the following years but it was the battles of nearly 100 years ago which truly formed the battalion. The 38th’s honours and traditions are carried on by the 8th/7th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment.

FRONT LINE: Members of the 38th Battalion near Guillemont Farm, near Bony. Private Binion, Sergeant AE Pegler MM, Corporal H. Amiet MM; Captain C. H. Peters MC; unidentified soldier, Company Sergeant Major R.J Buckland MM and Private G Bain.

I’m with Greenaway Shortly our councillors will be voting on the format of the green organic waste service for the City of Greater Bendigo. Imagine if the ratepayers of Bendigo got to vote on this, would the outcomes be the same? The bin audits that were conducted for the council in the trial areas showed: On average, the organic bins comprised 81.2 per cent garden organics, 14.1 per cent food organics and 4.7 per cent residual waste (contaminants). Overall, on average, 83 per cent of organic material was being diverted from landfill through the organics bin. On average, food waste is being disposed of almost evenly between the organics and residual waste bins. This tells us that residents mostly used their green organics bin for green waste. The difference between 81.2 per cent of garden organics collected and 83 per cent of organic material being diverted from landfill shows having only a green waste service will achieve almost the same results as having a green organics service. The confusion about what can go into a green organics bin can be eliminated, as green waste by its name suggests that it is garden waste. It in fact has the potential to increase the amount of organic material being diverted to landfill to higher than the 83 per cent that was achieved in the trial area by reducing the contaminants going into the bin. The majority of Victorian councils only have a green waste collection, not a green organics collection. Here in Bendigo we have a local company who already provides a green waste service and is committed to reducing landfill. They have already been providing this service for seven years and in turn support another local business. Greenaway’s environmental footprint in delivering the green waste to another local company has to be significantly less than the council’s proposal to transport the green organics waste to Stanhope to be decomposed there. We the ratepayers will be paying the transport and decomposition costs to Stanhope. We will also have to pay for the compost that is returned to the city if we want to use it. We need to reduce the green waste going to landfill to save on council costs to the state government, to increase the lifespan of the current tip and to reduce the expenses in transporting and dumping the waste

to the landfill at Patho. This would be a win for the community. The councillors need to ensure that they vote for the outcome that will get the ratepayers the best value for their dollar, as after all we are the people paying for this service. How would you vote on this issue? I’m with Greenaway. Andrea Metcalf, Epsom

Local context on abuse I read with some bewilderment the statement by the Bishop of Sandhurst the Rev. Leslie Tomlinson in your paper’s editorial pages last week. In his statement he offers an apology “to all those who have suffered sexual abuse as children by members of the clergy, religious orders or other church workers, or representatives of this diocese”. Bishop Tomlinson also lists several referral agencies and current church policies regarding the issue of sexual abuse. So far so good. However the puzzling aspect of this apology is that the bishop says he was prompted to make it because of the American movie Spotlight which highlights the investigations of the Boston Globe into the Archdiocese of Boston. The Boston Globe? Boston? Try the The Bendigo Weekly. Try Bendigo. Just in case I imagined the local investigation into St Aidan’s Orphanage I researched the Weekly’s online archives where I found the profoundly disturbing series of articles about the appalling abuse which occurred in that institution. These articles were written in 2014 – two years ago. What is puzzling is that the bishop did not feel compelled to apologise in 2014. From my reading of Dianne Dempsey’s series many of the victims are still alive, still hurting and still here – in Bendigo. If the bishop’s sentiments are sincere, he has every opportunity to specifically direct a public apology to the people who attended St Aidan’s Orphanage as young children and women. Call for inspiration From time to time the call arises for us to scrap our commonwealth situation and become a republic, or rather have a referendum towards that end. So many people from other countries don’t want us to remain under the heel of a British monarch. For myself, at 93 years of age, I

believe we have benefitted from a peaceful and prosperous situation under the gracious lady who serves now as our queen, neither do I quarrel with those who cannot find themselves comfortable under our present situation. At the same time I do not want Australia to become a republic. I do believe we are unique and would be better represented as, perhaps an “Austrublique” or maybe an “Austalocacey” or even “Islandalia”. Surely the government could hold a competition for people to air their ideas and we may gain some inspirational ideas. What do you think? People might air their ideas through your Viewpoint column, I do hope so. Iona Williams, Golden Square

Duty of care IN response to Father Rom Hayes, Reverend Cynthia Page and Reverend John Roundhill in the Bendigo Weekly’s “Moral Duty” article, February 19, 2016 on allowing refugees to stay in Australia. It is really good that the church stands up for moral values, however they seem to have lost their understanding of what their role is when it comes to this most important subject. The bible is very clear that Christians are to be a moral voice to the community and there is absolutely no doubt that our nation is in a steep

moral decline. Since the breakdown of the traditional family back in 1975 when the No Blame Divorce Act was introduced, we have seen huge rises in divorce, teen drug addiction, suicide, family violence, legalised homosexuality, crime and yet we see our church leaders mostly silent on this catastrophic situation. I would strongly recommend that our concerned clergy should focus on these more important issues rather than left-wing political grandstanding. I am not sure where Father Hayes gets his information from about off-shore processing centres, but would recommend that he do more homework before making public statements. I have worked in these places and I can assure you that they are not cruel and dangerous as he quoted. The Australian government has a duty of care and all refugees’ needs are met with extreme care and respect. Ray Lyne, Carisbrook

I’m pleased that my grandchildren and their friends attend schools and social activities at organisations that are required to demonstrate that their policies and practices put children’s safety first. As a civilised, democratic, secure nation that prides itself on fairness, we expect the community to create and promote children’s safety. We scream when we hear of child exploitation or abuse. Well we do when it is “our” children. What about if the children are refugees? If we act in a way that is consistent with the intention of the UN Convention surely these children are entitled to the same protection. If we somehow think of these children as different because of their background then Article 22 of the convention clearly reminds us that those children who come as refugees have the same status as “our” children. One way to distinguish them from “our” children is to send them off-shore into the Australian funded care of Nauru for a long and indefinite time. That way somehow it is acceptable to the Australian government to separate children into two groups – those we seek to protect from potential abuse and those we seek to condemn to abuse. That’s not good enough for me. I can’t be complicit in this. Di O’Neil, Bendigo

Proud of the 38th OUR front cover this week shows some important men, the men of the 38th Battalion. One hundred years ago next Tuesday, on March 1, the 38th was formed at the Epsom racecourse. Those soldiers, volunteers all, went on to serve on the Western Front in France and Belgium in some of the most costly battle of World War I. Of those on the cover, were from all walks of life, some were from southern New South Wales most were from Victoria and some were from Bendigo. Many were killed in action. The 38th Battalion despite its make up is proudly Bendigo. It was formed here and carried the city’s name. The losses in Gallipoli the previous year had not dented recruitment, Australians were still coming forward to join the fight. Australian service women and men were volunteers. In Britain conscription was introduced in 1916 as recruiting numbers had dried up following the realisation that war was

BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment no game. It says a lot about the young Australian men and women of the day that conscription was not required, and that is why the Bendigo Weekly is marking their path, and the anniversary in such a way. Casualities were high in the 38th, and many families lost loved ones or had wounded men return shattered in mind or body, and sometimes both. The battle of Passchendaele was a disaster, poorly planned and in atrocious conditions, it was the 38th’s most costly operation of the war, resulting in 62 per cent of the unit’s men killed or wounded. After returning home, many refused to speak of the war, many were too ill anyway. Men were

gassed and destroyed by shellfire, bullets and bayonet, never to be the same. We cannot hope to understand the traumas the soldiers went though in our name and the ultimate price paid by so many, and to think about it too much is harrowing, but we must remember the sacrifice and suffering. We must remember it so we don’t take their actions for granted, so we don’t brush aside the losses, so we remember when we have a little trivial complaint that at least we didn’t have to take part in a vicious war. Those men who served have all long gone, but it goes without saying they would have remembered their actions to their last days. We believe we should all do the same. So when you see the poppy, or see the commemoration or walk by the Soldiers Memorial Hall on Pall Mall, remember those names on the memorials represent someone’s son or husband or father whose lives were changed forever, when they signed up with the 38th.

letters Funding error I REFER to comments made by hopeful Bendigo council candidate George Flack, with regard to the funding of the Local Government Defined Benefit superannuation plan, Bendigo Weekly, February 19. Vision Super takes its responsibility to provide Bendigo council with the retirement benefits the council has promised to its past and present employees very seriously. Management of the Defined Benefit Plan requires a balance between taking risks to meet demanding funding objectives, and federal regulation requiring benefits to be fully funded every step of the way – not just when they are due to be paid. Vision Super employs a broadly diversified investment strategy to reduce risk and help us meet our return targets. This strategy has proven to be a great success in the recent market downturn.

This month, Vision Super reported to councils that despite a turbulent January on the share markets, the Defined Benefit Plan remained fully funded. While market downturns regularly occur, because of our careful management and unique investment strategy that has protected the Defined Benefit Plan to date, we do not expect there will be a call for capital on councils in July/ August 2017 based on the current market downturns in areas of equities and financial markets. A resilient city BENDIGO is a community that I am proud to be a part of and as a police officer, one that I am proud to serve and protect. I have always enjoyed and admired the sense of community spirit that is found in regional Victoria

and country towns. Like many regional communities, Bendigo is a resilient, diverse and supportive community that you can’t help but want to get involved in. We are a prosperous town with a vibrant mix of art, culture, food, entertainment, small businesses and industry. Our success is also found in our multiculturalism and cultural heritage. In the past year our community has seen some of the largest rallies to occur in central Victoria and on Saturday another rally will be held in the town centre. These rallies have no doubt tested our strength at times, but I know that Bendigo is resilient and we will not let this erode our community values. I want community members to know that we will have a very strong police presence on Saturday in order to maintain public safety.

People have a right, and Victoria Police respects this right, to express their views peacefully and lawfully. However, we will not let violence or intimidation drive a wedge between our communities, or deter people from coming to Bendigo. The community must respect the right for individuals to practice their faith and pursue their values, beliefs and interests. Attempts to incite violence or hatred based on a person’s religion or culture are not forms of free speech and on Saturday, police will not tolerate any such behaviour. Today, it is more important than ever that as a community we are accepting and respectful of each other. We need to protect and nurture the diverse community that we are so proud of. The bickie impossible Getting your hands on a treat is tricky

O

UR sports journalist young Noel is whippet thin. It’s a good look I have to say, but the young man grazes all day and his drawer is full of tasty food. I say that because I am jealous. If I grazed all day I would be even bigger. Young Noel once moved desks because of constant pilfering of bits from his drawer, I won’t mention any names, but it was Dianne. Rightfully, he was annoyed about the missing food but I must admit moving was taking it a bit far. This week he has pushed me to the limit, and I feel I must say something. He had a beautiful fruit muffin on Monday, and I peered at it lovingly. Noel has the ability to have such a thing sitting on his desk all day without feeling the need to eat it. This is impossible for me, and if I ever bring lunch in to work it’s gone by 9.30am. Anyway, after various hints from Dianne and me the muffin was still there intact. He worked out a ploy and during the late afternoon broke it into pieces to take our attention from it. I thought at least it’s going to be eaten and the torture will be gone. Come Tuesday morning and there it was in the bin. In parts, but certainly at least 80 per cent of it remained. He could have cut it in thirds and Dianne and I could have had a piece each. He still would have had more than

he actually ended up with. I know it’s his muffin, but for goodness sake. There is help at hand though, recently small packages have been arriving at reception from The Bendigo Bickie. I am happy to mention it because there’s a good story behind the small group. Jayde is the cook and the family unit has changed the house around so there is a commercial kitchen for Jayde to work in. They’re starting small and never really plan to go that big, but the bickies are fantastic. The packages were for me, but this

week I found the reception team had a jar of the bickies. Seems I wasn’t the only one with a direct line to sweet treats. I must work out a cunning plan so the bickies jar heads in my direction, but getting between a reception girl and her bickies is more dangerous than getting behind an ad salesperson and their commission. It doesn’t help that I am at the back of the building and the reception, naturally, is at the front. Of course there is an easy fix, I could buy a jar of bickies, but as I mentioned earlier, they would be gone by noon. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

bookclub with Di Dempsey Entries flow for Mulga T

HE country’s writers have answered a call to follow in the footsteps of Banjo Patterson and take inspiration from the Borough. Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival set a challenge for this year’s literary award for all entries to contain the word “Eaglehawk”, as per Patterson’s poem Mulga Bill. Entries have now closed and have been passed onto the judges for reading. Award coordinator Lauren Mitchell said traditionally the annual writing award draws entries from all over Australia. “We thought by having an Eaglehawk theme we could promote our township to creative souls far and wide,” she said. “The lovely thing is it has also inspired locals to get writing, to share what they love and know about Eaglehawk. “Our streets, park, lakes and even our infamous bridge have all received mentions, as well as places like Lightning Hill in the Whipstick. “While we’ve had entries from as far as Barcaldine in Queensland, Freemantle in Perth and Willunga in South

Australia, we’ve also had a flood of contenders from Eaglehawk, California Gully and Bendigo. “But of course all the entries are anonymous, so we won’t know where the winners are from until after they’ve been chosen.” Lauren thanked everyone who has crafted stories and poems for the award and said she looked forward to the results. “Through the award we wanted to find Eaglehawk’s next big literary mention, and I think we might just do that,” she said. Winners will be notified by phone then announced as part of the Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival opening on Wednesday, March 16. Results will also be published at www.mulgabillwritingaward.wordpress.com The festival opening ceremony kicks off eight days of activities and exhibitions in Eaglehawk, including a street procession, gala fair, flower, art and craft shows. Showcase sets the scene for blues festival T

HERE’S a very big Sunday in store at the Rifle Brigade Hotel this weekend with the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival’s first Showcase event of the year. The Festival, now in its sixth year, just keeps growing. Starting at noon, 16 acts will grace two stages over eight hours at the Rifle offering up a smorgasbord of blues, folk, rock ‘n’ roll, country-rock, funk and more. The Festival hosts events like this Showcase all year round and is now well-entrenched in Bendigo’s expanding cultural calendar. “I’m a little staggered to think that 2016 will be our sixth Bendigo Blues & Roots Musical Festival,” festival director Colin Thompson said. There are no headliners as such on a showcase day but there are numerous highlights.

Early-ish on the carpark stage you might recognise some familiar faces when the Funk Junkies do their, er, funky, stuff. Or try upstairs where the balcony stage hosts Bendigo storyteller Steph Bitter with her “just me, my guitar and sometimes a foot tambourine” set. The Mockbells are on mid-afternoon with their infectious jump blues-jazzswing-Latin hybrid. As they say themselves, “think the swinging nightclubs of London and New York in the ‘60s and you’ll get the picture.” They are big fun. Straight after The Mockbells on the carpark stage Andy Phillips and the Cadillac Walk will be delivering their own brand of harder, rockier blues – influenced by the likes of Rory Gallagher and Cream. Phillips says he “never plays a song the same way twice… it’s a bit different each

time.” Expect some drive and passion. Doc White, one of that rare breed of blues mandolinists, will be on the balcony stage mid-afternoon showcasing tracks form his forthcoming album Muddy Mando Mojo. Bendigo’s ubiquitous Grim Fawkner follows Doc White on the balcony stage. Dreamboogie, a Melbourne-based four piece and the intriguingly-named Catfish Voodoo round out the evening in the car park. Dreamboogie are two-time winners of the MBAS (Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society) annual blues challenge in 2011 and 2015. Their set will be drawn largely from their Ain’t Nobody’s Business and I’m Ready albums. Promises to be a big day out. - Simon Wooldridge

SARAH BOULTON

Sarah adds some colour S

ARAH Boulton creates abstract impressions with ink and acrylic on linen, canvas and paper and has been showing her work since the late 1990s. The Melbourne artist moved to Castlemaine in 2000, and it’s there her art will be shown next. The Gov Cafe at the Old Castlemaine Gaol is displaying a number of her works in March. “I draw on the visual juxtaposition between urban and industrial landscapes. Primarily I deconstruct the natural environments in the

surrounding central Victorian goldfields,” she said. “I create tactile impressions, incorporating pen and ink, acrylic and macro images. The images transverse the interior and exterior on an empathetically cellular level. “My work amalgamates aerial views through an axial landscape. Using my internal lens I create architecture of the mind. These complex terrains have a morphic resonance, which subsequently facilitate the occurrences found in geological synergy.”

Sarah says her work represents urban activity in a rural setting. “The pace of urban life is condensed within the rural landscape just as it is in human nature. I endeavour through my work to communicate an internal dialogue to give us an insight into what lies beyond the surface,” she said. The Gov Cafe is at the Old Castlemaine Gaol, 36 Bowden Street, Castlemaine. The display runs from March 6 until March 27 and is open from 10am to 4pm.

EX and the City rebooted this new novel is definitely not. That said, SATC and Lipstick Jungle author Candace Bushnell’s latest New York City saga is entertaining escapism into a world few mere mortals ever glimpse. Central character Pandemonia James “PJ” Wallis is (precisely like Bushnell herself ) a writer of fantastical female fiction – phenomenally popular chick-lit that has enraptured the male movers and shakers of Hollywood. PJ’s on-paper creation, Monica, is America’s darling – a good-time, can-do, partyhard gal whose life is the envy of book-buyers by the million. Monica has it all: beauty, success, confidence, wealth and a blissful, apparently charmed Manhattan existence – and so too, by extension, has her alter ego PJ. Being constantly compared with a too-good-tobe-true fictitious invention is not all it’s cracked up to be, however; after years of living in her imaginary heroine’s shadow, PJ has had more than enough of never quite measuring up. Other projects beckon, and the public’s relentless

obsession with Monica is a roadblock PJ is desperate to clear. Alas, breaking free of the Monica-mania isn’t as easy as typing “THE END”, she discovers to her horror with a publisher, a studio and an entire country baying for further instalments of their idyllic dream girl. What will it take to spring an increasingly frustrated PJ out of her self-made Monica trap? Readers expecting SATC’s Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda won’t find too many familiar faces in this revisiting of NYC’s cocktail-club scene, populated as it is with franchised versions of Samantha at her most outrageous surrounded by actors, publicists and a suitably oily celebrity chef. While Killing Monica lacks the witty repartee of the Bushnell-inspired HBO TV series, its plot takes all the kinks and dips of an Olympic diving routine before arriving at a genuinely unpredictable and satisfying – if perhaps slightly hurried – climax. – Rosalea Ryan

Bendigo LIFE UP COUNTRY: Michael Waugh will play at the Golden Vine.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, February 26, 2016

What we might be V

ICTORIAN country music singer Michael Waugh launches his debut album What We Might Be at The Golden Vine Hotel on Saturday. Born in regional Victoria, Michael has had a surge of interest in his new song and video Heyfield Girl which is an anthem to the women of rural towns all over and has reached 10,000 views in a matter of a few months. His follow up single and video Mafeking Hill is an homage to all the country towns where the boys gather to talk about finding a better place to go, but never leaving, and the song

has been shortlisted for an Australian Songwriters Association Award. In January he released his third single, along with a new video for his haunting song Paul which deals with bullying and resulting suicide of a boy he grew up with in the country, who like Michael, was bullied mercilessly for being different. The album What We Might Be, out now, is produced by Aria and Golden Guitar winner Shane Nicholson. Michael’s music gives a new voice to the Australian experience. His insightful storytelling cuts to the emotional heart of everyday experience.

“My musical education was in the back seat of a Ford, driving down bumpy tracks on long country drives,” he said. “It was a case of learn to love country music, or jump out of the moving vehicle. “In this collection of songs I wanted to capture the magpies and lawnmowers and footy games of rural Australian life. “I wanted to give voice to all of these stories, because they are about brave, beautiful, honest, undervalued and overworked men and women who taught me what to be.”

on track to do the same thing again next month when it presents its latest offering, a comedy/drama called Come Back for Light Refreshments After the Service written by Julie Day – in Castlemaine in March. Set in a kitchen in Melbourne in the 1980s, the play follows four women as they prepare traditional food for a wake. Beth’s father slowly succumbed to Alzheimer’s and she nursed him for five years “The play is about relationships and the different expectations of three generations of Australian women as they explore the role of carers in our community,” Jones said. AKE no mistake, there is an exciting new brand of theatre emerging in central Victoria. It’s called social realism – and Castlemaine-based fringe theatre company Hobo Playhouse loves plays that tell life as it is. No pretences, no illusions. “Let’s look at the real issues confronting people these days like street people, refugees, mental health and carers in need of support,” Hobo Playhouse’s artistic director Jeff Jones said. The company only formed last year and sold out its first season at the 2015 Castlemaine Fringe Festival. The Hobos took the show on the road and performed to strong crowds in Emerald and at the 2015 Melbourne Fringe, scoring rave reviews along the way. By all accounts, this company is

S featured last week, Lewis Crowle met his unfortunate end at the Johnson’s No3 Mine or the Nelson shaft in 1886. Born at St Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall on September 5, 1840, Crowle was the son of John and Mary Crowle nee Searle. The family migrated to South Australia and on October 1, 1865 at Wallaroo, Crowl married Ann Grace Thomas, nee Williams. Ann Grace was a widow, her first husband John had died at Kapunda, South Australia in 1863. Ann Grace was also born in Cornwall, on February 2, 1841, the daughter of Silas Williams and Catherine Deeble Rogers. Ann Grace died aged 33 at California Gully. Upon the passing of his first wife Crowle met and married Mary Ann nee Rowse. She too was of Cornish birth, circa 1856 coming from St Austell and continued to live to the ripe age of 72 years, passing away on October 29, 1928 at Freemantle, Western Australia. When Crowle died in that horrific mining cage accident at the Nelson Mine, the funeral expenses were paid by the Johnson’s Reef Gold Mines Company on whose lease the mine was located. Additionally the company paid compensation to Mary Ann Crowle to the tune of £10. The company went further giving Mary Ann £1 per week for life. Unfortunately the company ceased to exist some six years before Mary Ann’s passing. At the time that Crowle married Ann Grace, she already had five children and with Mary Ann he had another two. The £1 per week that she received was less than half the wages that Lewis had earned, but in some ways she could have counted her blessings that the mine continued for so long after losing her husband. There were several mines on the Bendigo goldfield with the name Nelson, the first was at Snob’s Hill, Eaglehawk, it operated from 1870 until 1881. The second was the Nelson Reef Quartz Mining Company that in August 1880 was taken over by the Johnson’s Reef Gold Mines Company. The purchase was at the initiative of the general manager of the Johnson’s – the very successful and entrepreneurial mine manager Richard Williams. The Nelson Mine (then to be known as the Johnson No3) had been under the management of George Wilson Frogatt. Richard Williams had persuaded his directors that he could see potential in the mine which, unlike the Johnson No1 and Johnson No2 (or Stackers), was not on the Garden Gully Line of Reef but on the Derby Reef. John Halfey, a hard nosed investor and a director of the Johnson’s compa-

ny, was motivated by Richard Williams’ ability and persuasive powers, as to the untapped potential that the new No3 possessed. Richard Williams knew that the Nelson, or No3 mine, had very little prospecting done in the previous years. When in 1886 he had uncovered a very rich reef in the Johnson’s, the company was in a position to pay out a massive overdraft of £4000 to the bank in one fell swoop. Immediately after that transaction a great dividend of four shillings and six pence per share was paid, the shareholders were delighted. Much of the work being done at the No3 or Nelson shaft was done by 10 parties of tributors, plus the men directly working for the company. Richard Williams had been a general manager for the Lansell mines, and was responsible for their excellent development, and the wonderful returns that George Lansell enjoyed. Williams was not adequately rewarded or acknowledged by George Lansell and so left his employ and Lansell tried to put the brakes on other companies not associated with him to not employ Williams. As mentioned John Halfey was a great advocate for Richard Williams from the very beginning of his time at the Johnson’s Reef group of mines. Williams was also of Cornish birth and immensely respected by the workers, directors, shareholders and the members of the Bendigo Stock Exchange. He was involved in numerous organisations and his beloved Methodist Church.

Crows in control MANDURANG is facing the likelihood of consecutive defeats heading into the Emu Valley Cricket Association finals series after Spring Gully seized control of their matchup on day one of round nine. The Rangas won the toss and batted first at Spring Gully Oval but it was the Crows’ bowlers who took control from the get go and put the visitors in danger of missing out on a home final. The dynamic Matt Giri was gone for five, giving him six runs in his last two innings after making 454 in his previous three knocks in division one. Phil Berry was next to go to make it 2/10 before a patient Cain Ladiges fell victim to Saheed Akolade without scoring despite facing 19 balls, with the score at 3/12. Mandurang suffered another mini collapse in the middle order after Matt Pask (14) and Ben Rodda (20) fell, and Daniel Thiesz was trapped leg before to Liam Crapper to reduce the visitors to 6/46. That became 7/52 shortly after when Paul Martin was caught by Shaun Makepeace off the bowling of Liam Pilcher.

Warrick Behrens made 48 to add some respectability to Mandurang’s scorecard, but the Crows eventually cleaned up the tail and dismissed the reigning premiers for just 134, their lowest score of the season. Akolade and Alex Sutton both claimed two scalps, and the Liams – Crapper and Pilcher – took 5/30 from 20.2 overs between them. Makepeace then went to town with the bat as the Crows faced 16 overs before stumps, smashing 67 not out to leave the hosts superbly placed at 0/81 heading into day two. Alex Collins continued his sparkling form for United, smacking 116 as the Tigers compiled 9/346 against Sedgwick. The century was Collins’ third in United’s division one campaign, while he also smashed 110 in a bash for cash game earlier this season, and comes hot on the heels of innings of 77 and 113 in his last two digs. Josh White added 45 and James Smith and George Hartney added some valuable late runs as United passed 300 for the fourth time this season.

Steven Theobold took three wickets in his first division one game of the year after also playing in the Rams’ division three game

earlier in the morning. The other top-four side in division one also fared well, with Leon Beatty and Jack Stagg leading Maiden Gully to 8/282 against Golden Gully. Opener Rob Brown made a half-century but he was the only member of Gully’s top order to get among the runs. Beatty (83) and Stagg (73), who

Finals fever bites A RED-HOT Golden Square and Bendigo United will face off in what amounts to an elimination final in the final round of the Bendigo District Cricket Association season. Golden Square rocketed into the top four after an outright win against Eaglehawk last week, dismissing the Borough for 86 and 80 while making 169 in its lone innings with the bat. Bendigo United were also winners, over Huntly North Epsom, but the 10 points Square collected saw the Dogs jump to fourth on the table, one points ahead of BUCCs heading into the final round. Bendigo United’s case was not helped by White Hills, who scored an impressive win over top side Strathdale Maristians, leaving the Demons in third place and facing only two scenarios that can see them miss the finals. To be knocked out of the top four White Hills would need to be defeated outright by Kangaroo Flat, who would likely then sneak into the four, or be beaten by the Roos and for Golden Square and BUCCs to play out a draw and take three points each, leaving the Demons on the outer based on a percentage tiebreaker with BUCCs. All Golden Square captain Tim Wood is worried about is making sure his side is rewarded for its outstanding form in the second half of the year.

joined forces at 5/128, took the game by the scruff of the neck and put on 146, the highest sixth-wicket partnership of the season. Shaun O’Shea was the best of the Golden Gully bowlers, with 3/57 from 20 overs. In the round’s other games West Bendigo will resume at 2/60 in response to Axe Creek’s 225 and Marong has Emu Creek on the ropes at 6/76 chasing 178 at JG Edwards Oval.

FAST5 NETBALL IS HERE THE finals of the first Fast5 Netball competition staged by the Bendigo Football Netball League will be played on Monday. In the knock out semis, Wedderburn, who finished on top will play Golden Square ,who finished fourth and Sandhurst will play Bridgewater in the second versus third clash. Knock out semi-finals will be played at 6.15pm followed by the grand final at 7pm. The grand final will be played between the winners of the two games. Sponsor Bendigo Mazda has provided the gifts for the winning team. Fast5 is a shorter game of netball with six minute quarters and rolling substitutions. Only five players are on the court instead of seven creating a fast paced game

FINALS FOR PENNANT BOWLS

EXPERIENCED: Scott Johnson Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN “We won two games going into Christmas after starting 0-4 and I think those wins gave us the little bit of confidence that we didn’t have,” Wood, who made 87 in the win over Eaglehawk, said this week. “We came back after Christmas and rolled Eaglehawk and then had a bit of a hiccup against BUCCs after that, but after that first win the attitude just changed and everyone seemed a lot more positive.” Golden Square has only lost one of its last seven games – to, of all sides, Bendigo United – after dropping its opening four. With a bowling attack led by Scott Trollope and Scott Woodman, spinner Liam Smith and Josh Blencowe the Dogs have

had no trouble taking wickets, and are very sharp in the field. With Wood back in form after getting among the runs last weekend, the Bulldogs batting lineup looks equally tough to crack. Scott and Jason Johnson add experience alongside young opener Hamish Schumacher, while Luke Baird and Wood have proved they can both make big scores when it counts. “BUCCs are a very good side and when we played them last time Ben Gunn got a hold of us and made a really good century, but even then we had a few chances and put them down,” Wood said. “I think at this stage we are playing with so much con-

fidence that we just need to worry about our plan, and that it doesn’t change too much depending on who we are playing. “That’s not to say we aren’t taking the other teams seriously, but we are really focussed keeping that confidence and positivity up.” Square is also encouraging any past first XI players to head to MyJet Oval to get behind the side with a function set to be held from 2pm. Other game sin the BDCA’s final round over the next two weekends see White Hills tackle Kangaroo Flat, Sandhurst play Eaglehawk, Strathfieldsaye host Strathdale Maristians and Bendigo against Huntly North Epsom.

BENDIGO East and Bendigo will square off in this weekend’s first week of division one Bendigo Weekend Pennant Bowls finals. Bendigo East tuned up for finals with an all-rinks win against fourth-placed Golden Square, while Bendigo took a narrow win over Kangaroo Flat to knock the Roos out of the finals race. Eaglehawk also took winning form into the postseason as the Borough prepares to face Golden Square in the elimination final. The venues for this weekend’s finals: Bendigo East vs Bendigo at South Bendigo Dillon, Eaglehawk vs Golden Square at Bendigo Hesse.

YOUNGSTERS PITCH IN YOUNGSTERS Zane Keighran and James Vlaeminck have both been performing strongly for Victoria Country at this week’s Australian under-15 Schoolboys Championships in Brisbane. Vlaeminck took five wickets in the opening two games for the Vics, taking 3/22 in their opening fixture before claiming 2/20 against Northern Territory. Keighran starred against the NT side, playing a lone hand of 51 with the bat. The championships wrap up on Sunday.

Most valuable BENDIGO Spirit star Kelsey Griffin capped off a stellar Women’s National Basketball League season by winning the club’s most valuable player award for a second straight year. Griffin took out both the MVP and Players’ Player awards at Wednesday’s presentation night, while guard Kerryn Harrington saw her improvement rewarded with the Coaches Award. The club also announced that coach Simon Pritchard had agreed to a deal to coach the club for a further three years. The Spirit’s season came to an end last weekend after consecutive losses to Sydney and Canberra ended their finals hopes, Griffin sitting out the game against the Capitals that saw Bendigo finish the season with a 12-12 record. The team’s finals hopes were shot on Friday night when they fell to Sydney, which also meant Bendigo would finish sixth on the table, below the Flames. “Saturday night we were all pretty devastated, but I think we were more so the week before after we lost to Adelaide. I think we knew then it would be very, very tough for us to make it,” Pritchard said. “That inconsistency that we

have showed up in both games at the weekend, and we have to get rid of that. We have to find a way, through better leadership on the court and from myself off it, to get rid of that habit.” The inconsistency between games and even during plagued the team all season long, as did an inability to win games against teams below them on the ladder. A sometimes complacent Spirit dropped two games to Adelaide, two to Melbourne and one to Canberra. A quarter of the wins the three sides recorded cumulatively came against Bendigo. The team will conduct exit interviews with players over the coming week before a planning meeting next Saturday that will play a big part in shaping the future of the club. “We then need to debrief over the next week and a half which involves talking to players, we are involved in a golf day on Sunday and a planning session next Saturday,” Pritchard said. “There won’t be too many changes at all. The basis of the squad won’t change, it’s just a case of ‘can we add something to it?’

The final quarter

Coach needs time to build

PRIZE PLAYER: Kelsey Griffin “And we have to find a way, money-wise, to be able to do that. We don’t have to change massively, but just make some

small gains in a few areas, as well as the development from the players already a part of the group.”

Pioneers shine in practice THE Bendigo Pioneers under-18 sides impressed in practice matches last weekend ahead of a trip to Ballarat this Sunday. The Pioneers’ youth girls academy won the opening game of their statewide challenge series over Calder Cannons with a two-goal last quarter burst sealing the victory, while the club’s main under-18 squad took a wire-to-wire win. Joe Atley and Kobe Mutch stood out in the win in the day’s main game, which Bendigo started by kicking six first quarter goals. Coach Brett Henderson said he was pleased with the way his side played in its opening competitive hit out of the year.

“I was happy with it because we played the style that we want to play, we tried to implement some things last year and we were just never able to do them so to see some of that come out on Saturday was good,” the club’s second year coach said. “To see us play that way first up was really pleasing, we started well and some of those early plays gave the guys a lot of confidence. “I was really happy with the

LOOKING GOOD: The Pioneers started strongly at the weekend. way that we started and the way that we used to ball on Saturday was really pleasing.” The Pioneers also had a second under-18 squad in action on Saturday, as well as the club’s under-16s. “It was a really good response, there was a lot of people watching the girls game

and that was a super result and I think people that came out throughout the day would have walked away pretty impressed by the standard,” Henderson said. All four sides will travel to Ballarat this weekend to take on North Ballarat Rebels on Sunday.

AFTER the Bendigo Spirit crashed out of WNBL finals contention last weekend plenty of fans have been asking one question this week. Having missed the playoffs for the first time in several seasons, will Simon Pritchard return to coach the club next season? The answer is yes, for several reasons. Those reasons are worth dissecting given what appears on the surface a precipitous fall after three straight grand final appearances. First cab off the rank is the fact Pritchard signed a two-year deal last May and another deal this week that will see him coach the club for the next three years. The club has locked him in as the coach to lead them into the future. While Bernie Harrower was axed after three straight grand final appearances last year, he and the board were at loggerheads and the situation had become beyond untenable. The club had enjoyed unprecedented success but it had come at a high price. The Spirit should be disappointed to not make the playoffs, there is no doubt about that. This year’s team was far and away good enough to finish in the league’s top four, and its form against the other top sides was less of a concern than dropping games against the bottom teams. However, off the court, the club is far stronger than it ever has been. Memberships, game day attendances and sponsorships are all up on previous years. The buzzword with fans these days is “engagement”, something the club has done more of than ever this season. Give general manager Adam Tarr, the Spirit board and an army of loyal volunteers credit for that, but don’t discount the work of the coach. With a strong business background, Pritchard signed on in a double role of coaching and business development, and has been tireless in his work to get the club and its message into the broader community. His first season has not been all smooth sailing, but installing a new system with a group that was established under Harrower was never going to be easy. Additionally, Bendigo lost Chelsea Aubry, Sara Blicavs, Tessa Lavey and Maddie Garrick in the offseason. Lavey and Blicavs are Australian Opals, Garrick is a future national squad contender and all three averaged at least 10 points per game this season for their new clubs. Bendigo, not able to spend as freely as in previous years, recruited five players. Only Kerryn Harrington, back with her home town team, had ever stepped foot on a WNBL court before. Joy Burke, Ashleigh Spencer, Molly Matthews and Ebony Rolph had never even been on a WNBL roster. Combine that with below-par seasons from Kelly Wilson and Belinda Snell and Bendigo finished three games behind South East Queensland in fourth. Roster turnover is inevitable, and Pritchard will no doubt look to boost his squad’s depth with the minimal funds at his disposal, but the majority of Bendigo’s team will return next year. That of course includes the coach, who deserves every chance to build toward Bendigo’s next run of title contention. Joel Peterson Twitter: @joelbpeterson

City coach pulls pin By JOEL PETERSON

HEADS UP: City opened the season with a loss. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

ONE week after starting its season in earnest, Bendigo City FC is again facing fresh worries at club level and an uncertain short-term future without a coach. The club announced on Wednesday that coach Esteban Quintas was headed back to Spain, and would cease his coaching duties immediately. The club released a statement saying the Argentine’s departure was “outside of Esteban and Bendigo City’s control”. It adds to a long list of off-pitch issues for the club, which is now in its second season as a National Premier Leagues Victoria licence holder. The first club to hold the licence, FC Bendigo, was stricken with financial issues and folded, while City last year had its committee resign before overturning the decision two days later in the midst of the season. That came after the club was forced to make technical director Fab Soncin’s position redundant midway through last season. The loss of Quintas is a further blow to City, who

HE’S GONE: Esteban Quintas is headed back to Spain. had shown signs of competitiveness in pre-season games before being comprehensively beaten 0-4 by Melbourne City in its first NPL2 game last Saturday. “Bendigo City has nothing but praise for Esteban’s enthusiasm, passion and football expertise he imparted to our senior playing group whilst here in Bendigo,” the club’s statement read. “While the role Esteban filled as senior coach has been brief, his contribution has been extremely valuable in terms of giving our players a taste of Eu-

ropean football standards and setting up the football structure to move forward. “Solid performances in preseason matches demonstrates the strong work ethic and cohesion the senior team has developed under his professional leadership.” The club will seek to find a replacement in coming weeks, but will do so with a limited pool of applicants given the season is now under way. City takes on Sunshine George Cross at Epsom Huntly Reserve on Saturday from 7pm.
