THE state government has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars protecting flight paths for Air Ambulance Victoria but will have to rely on the common sense of drone owners not to fly in the airspace and disrupt emergency medical transport. There is evidence drone operators are unaware of the flightpath restrictions leading to and from Bendigo Hospital, as well as flying restrictions over Bendigo. Laws regulating drones will be loosened on 29 September meaning

Airspace rules to be relaxed

operators of drones weighing less than two kilograms will no longer have to be certified. The change will be good news for real estate agents who want aerial footage for house ads, among others. Currently, certification requires operators hold a remote pilot licence and a range of other approvals. But an operator who spoke to the Bendigo Weekly said certification costs thousands of dollars and he

was better off waiting for regulations to change, after which he can film for commercial gain without risking large fines. He said he was unaware of the flight path for the Air Ambulance. It extends from the new elevated helipad at the hospital for more than a kilometre north-west and the same distance south-east and the state government has spent thousands planning with local government for

overlays that restrict the height of development. The drone operator, who was filming in the centre of Bendigo and wished to remain anonymous, said he had thought restricted airspace was three kilometres from an airfield. The Bendigo Weekly has seen footage on the internet taken from drones that show operators are flying within a 5.5km no-fly zone around

airfields. The boundary extends over the central business district of Bendigo almost to the Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which regulates drones as remotely-piloted aircraft, prosecuted 15 operators in Australia last year. But a CASA media spokesman said the regulator relied on members of the public to inform it of breaches. And the message to operators, which it spreads on websites and social media, was to use their common sense. Continued Page 6

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

New avenue for dispute THE state government has moved to ensure builders and consumers can resolve disputes without costly, prolonged and stressful legal action. Minister for consumer affairs Marlene Kairouz has announced the establishment of Domestic Building Dispute Resolution Victoria, which will conduct compulsory dispute resolution and issue binding orders, before a matter ends up at VCAT or in the courts. The new independent service will be led by former Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria director, Gina Ralston, who has recently been appointed chief dispute resolution officer. Ms Ralston will lead a team of experienced dispute resolution officers, and will have the power to make binding orders compelling builders to fix or finish work, or for consumers to pay for a builder’s services. Ms Kairouz said the government is taking action to fix longstanding flaws in Victoria’s $28 billion building industry. “DBDRV will help avoid costly, prolonged and stressful legal action,” she said. “The new body will have the powers it needs to order expert assessments, determine if work is incomplete or unsatisfactory, or if payments have been improperly withheld. “Ms Ralston’s extensive experience and proven track record

builders to provide consumers with an information statement before they sign a building contract, outlining the rights and responsibilities of each party. DBDRV will be in operation early next year.

RESOLUTION: Marlene Kairouz will provide DBDRV with the leadership it needs to be an effective dispute resolution authority.” Building disputes often take a heavy toll on home owners and builders alike – and often end up in court. It’s an added stress and significant cost. DBDRV will provide a fair, fast and free service aiming to build confidence in Victoria’s building industry. Under the Victorian-first reforms, VCAT will have new powers in certain circumstances to award costs against an unsuccessful party, if they had refused to participate in dispute resolution, or did not participate in good faith. The reforms will also require

ABS figures out this week show new Australian home lending volumes slipped back during May, but Victoria bucked the trend. The Housing Industry Association said during May 2016, the number of loans to owner occupiers for dwelling construction fell nationally by 2.7 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms while loans for the purchase of new homes inched up by 0.5 per cent. In aggregate, total new home lending volumes weakened by 1.7 per cent during the month and were 2.1 per cent lower than in May 2015. This is not reflected in Victoria’s figures, compared with a year earlier, the number of loans to owner occupiers constructing or purchasing new homes increased Victoria by 8.5 per cent. “Despite the reduction in the RBA’s official cash rate at the beginning of May, new home lending volumes experienced a slight reduction,” HIA economist Shane Garrett said. “The federal budget was also delivered on the same day and prospective homebuyers are like-

ly to have taken a step back from the market until its implications became clear. “With the federal election result now clear, potential homebuyers are likely to return to the market with a great deal more certainty.” ENSURING a strong national focus on housing is critical to retaining Australia’s AAA credit rating, says the Housing Industry Association. “Residential building activity has been the engine room of the Australian economy for the past four years,” HIA’s economist, Harley Dale said. “It has filled the void left by a contracting mining sector, and has gained some ground on a decade of undersupply in new housing. But there’s much more that needs to be done if Australia is to defend its AAA credit rating.” “The incoming Commonwealth government needs to focus on building the new homes for our growing population, meeting the housing needs of our changing demographics, addressing the housing affordability challenges confronting younger generations, supporting the 321,595 businesses that operate across the residential building industry, and importantly, enabling the industry to grow and expand its contribution to the Australian economy.”

Race dogs face cull

By Patrick Stafrace

THE future looks bleak for greyhounds as animal welfare organisations and industry regulators in Victoria begin to address the repercussions of the New South Wales government’s verdict to outlaw the controversial sport. An industry task force lead by representatives from the NSW state government and RSPCA NSW have begun consultation with animal welfare organisations and members of the greyhound industry including Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) in order to develop a detailed industry shutdown by the end of this year. The decision comes after a Special Commission of Inquiry

www.bendigoweekly.com.au

lead by the NSW government in 2015 revealed a systemic culture of animal welfare violation, including the blind-eye practice of livebaiting and the termination of 50 to 70 per cent of greyhounds that were deemed “uncompetitive” for racing. Figures released by the NSW Department of Justice confirms there are 6809 registered greyhounds in NSW as of July 7. NSW Premier Mike Baird has advised that as part of the shutdown strategy, there will be a welfare plan for greyhounds. The four options suggested are that the animals will remain in their current home, be rehomed through an adoption program, transferred overseas or interstate or face hu-

mane euthanasia. Bendigo Animal Welfare and Community Services president, Debbie Edwards, does not believe that the proposed transition strategy for greyhounds offers a humane solution as ultimately, “they are

ard practice when dogs aren’t performing,” Ms Edwards said. In 2014, Greyhound Racing NSW in conjunction with GRV, developed an animal welfare strategy to ensure Greyhound Adoption Programs (GAP) continued to op-

record 895 greyhound adoptions in 2015-16, an increase of 50 per cent since the joint strategy was introduced. Since the NSW verdict, GRV has committed $3.5 million to expand GAP, and will also put in place major initiatives to reduce breeding, injury and euthanasia rates. GRV’s general manager for animal welfare, Dr Gavin Goble, said that Australia’s largest adoption agency “needed to do more”. The Weekly spoke directly with GRV regarding inter-state pressure on their adoption program, saying that “we are in direct consultation with government proceedings, but we cannot confirm the outcome for those greyhounds”.

Nationals make new ground Amid the drama of the extended election campaign, Victorian Nationals are making some political ground with Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie in line for an elevated role in the Coalition government. The newly elected Nationals’ candidate in Murray Damian Drum is understood to be too new for the same reward, despite a 14year career in Victoria’s upper house. Meanwhile, the Victorian Nationals have called for nominations to fill the Northern Victorian upper house seat vacated by Mr Drum. Nationals Victorian state director Sally Branson said this week she had received eight nominations. Nominations are due today. It is understood Nationals president Peter Schwarz has nominated, as well as recent Nationals’ candidate for Bendigo in the recent federal election, Andy Maddison. Federal candidate in the seat of Indi, Marty Corboy, also nominated but has since withdrawn. The party will select a nominee who will then be voted in at a joint sitting of the Victorian parliament. Mr Drum was based in Bendigo during his term in the Victorian Upper House. He decided to resign from the seat and run for

Book a spot at the fringe festival The Write on the Fringe festival is back this year with a full programme of literary fun and quirky happenings. It’s all scheduled to take place at the Bendigo Library from August 5 to 13, and the program is out now. This is the third year of the festival, which features a diverse program of activities exhibitions and installations

including Hock Loong the Learning Dragon, a 10-metre dragon created with the help of 100 children which will be unveiled in a special ceremony at this year’s festival. Festival coordinator Maree Tonkin said the Write on the Fringe festival is all about having fun and exploring creative ways to foster new ideas to im-

prove literacy and encourage self-expression. “The festival also provides opportunities for the broader community to connect with local artists, authors and writers through a range of participatory workshops and presentations,” Ms Tonkin said. Goldfields Library Corporation’s Chris Kelly said Ben-

election in the Ffderal seat of Murray when the longserving Liberal incumbent Sharman Stone announced her retirement before the election was called. The Nationals were desperate to win back the seat and vote counting after the July 2 election showed Mr Drum was likely to claim the victory. His win was sealed when Liberal opponent Duncan McGauchie this week conceded defeat. Mr Drum attended his first Nationals’ Party Room meeting in Canberra on Tuesday. “We ran a strong campaign that focused on local people and local issues and the people of Murray resoundingly backed our positive approach,” he said. “The Nationals’ strong commitment to Murray was reinforced by the many Nationals ministers who came to the electorate to make commitments during the campaign. “I will now dedicate myself to working tirelessly to repay the faith that has been bestowed to me by the people of Murray. “I am proud to be from the Goulburn Valley and I look forward to getting on with the job of working with our community to get things moving again.” - Sharon Kemp

Top Coliban job open

COLIBAN Water managing director Jeff Rigby will have to reapply for his position if he wishes to stay on with the water authority. This is his fifth year in the role and Mr Rigby brought Coliban’s financial result into the black for the first time in more than a decade last year thanks to a surge in service and usage charges, and water usage in 2014-15. In a statement, Coliban said Mr Rigby’s contract would expire in

December, triggering an automatic recruitment process. “We need to ensure we have the right person to lead the organisation for the next five-year term,” Coliban chairman Andrew Cairns said. He said providing value for customers and continuing to build the region’s resilience to the impacts of climate change would be focus areas for the new managing director. “Coliban Water has had significant achievements under the leadership of Jeff Rigby,” Mr Cairns said. “The open process is no reflec-

NBN reach increases THE NBN is firing up in parts of Greater Bendigo as residents and businesses can now access highspeed broadband using fixed wireless technology. More than 800 additional homes and businesses in areas including Eppalock, Goornong, and Huntly North have access to the NBN, opening up a range of digital doors for local families and businesses. Internet speeds between 25 and 50 megabytes per second are guaranteed by fixed wireless technology, providing flexible broadband access across a range of internet enabled devices. The launch comes as broadband use in Australia reaches unprecedented levels, partly due to the popularity of live video streaming services.

Last year, the volume of traffic carried over Telstra’s fixed network increased by more than 30 per cent. Telstra’s general manager for central Victoria, Steve Tinker, said the extension of Telstra services on the NBN network around Bendigo will give locals access to faster broadband that will help them better source information, materials and supplies for their growing business. “The speed and reliability of the NBN opens a new suite of ways that businesses can interact with their customers,” Mr Tinker said. This month, as part of NBN Co’s three-year plan, construction commenced in Strathfieldsaye using Fibre-To-The-Node (FTTN) technology.

Construction areas include Bendigo, Big Hill, Golden Square, Quarry Hill, Ironbark and Kangaroo Flat, connecting an estimated 34,200 premises by 2018. Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, highlighted the importance of fast and reliable broadband for maintaining a competitive edge, and to ensure local residents are not at a disadvantage when utilising online services. “Bendigo was promised full NBN connectivity by the end of this year under the Coalition, so we’re already behind schedule,” Ms Chesters said. “I will be actively calling on the Liberal government to expedite the rollout into Bendigo.” – Patrick Stafrace

TREE felling started on an Aspinall Street housing development this week as the Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst prepares the ground for the first stage of its Golden Square subdivison, 29 lots of which will be on sale by the end of the year. As construction equipment tore through trees on the land, the diocese was quick to state it was creating the boundary of the seven-hectare nature reserve that will form the northern half of the land development. Community groups and residents opposed the City of Greater Bendigo’s 2010 decision which approved the development without the reserve, eventually taking it to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal which called for a planning approach that retained native vegetation. The diocese won approval in 2014 for a three-stage development with 80 lots and land set aside for a flora and fauna reserve to be protected under the Trust for Nature conservation covenant. The former Bishop’s house and associated outbuildings will be preserved on land within the subdivision.

axed: Tree felling has started on the site. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN Diocese business manager Cameron Fraser said the church had worked hard to “get to a position where the development could commence and it would be a great opportunity for people to purchase land in a location connected to so many community amenities”. “We think the development strikes a really good balance between respecting the environment and providing much needed residential land to the community,” Mr Fraser said.

“The first stage secured the boundary of the nature reserve, which is protected by a trust for nature convenant. “We are now undertaking drainage works and the construction of a retention basin as part of stage one of the subdivison. “Stage one will comprise 29 premium lots offered to the public.” Expressions of interest for the land are likely to be called for next month.

Marong hotel plans growth OWNERS of the Marong Family Hotel have applied to build a 15room two-storey motel with six ground-level retail spaces next to the hotel based on demand from customers over their nine-year ownership. Robyn and Ross Lougoon hope to have started constuction within 12 months but are awaiting council approval for the project which has been 12 months in the planning. Ms Lougoon said demand for motel accommodation was based on consistent interest from three potential sets of customers. Marong, located 17 kilometres west of Bendigo, is on the way to Mildura from Melbourne and travellers eating at the hotel

often ask for accommodation. The hotel also caters for weddings and receptions and guests often want to stay where the festivities take place. And the Bendigo Stadium, in West Bendigo, routinely hosts sports tournaments which attract out-of-town families who are looking for a place to stay. Ms Lougoon said the motel plans were designed to meet the needs of the potential market. Included was a bridal suite and a number of multiple-bedroom apartments as well as single rooms. The layout caters for up to 60 people at a time. It also includes a dorm room to cater for teams. Ms Lougoon said businesses

had already contacted her interested in the retail space below on the ground floor. There was an agreement with a pharmacy to move in once the project had approval and the constructed was complete, and real estate agents were looking for space as well. Ms Lougoon also sees demand for a gym and a bakery. But with residential development growing in Maldon and a business park proposal on the horizon, she was conscious it would not all of the community’s needs. The Marong Central Property Development, as the project is called, is expected to create more than 20 jobs.

The planning permit application has already been approved by Heritage Victoria. The concept consists of 80 high-end architecturally designed townhouses, built on parkland which will overlook the lake. The $35 million project will allow for medium density housing development, diversifying the housing options available in Bendigo. Mr Banks has plans drawn up for 29 units designed for semi-in-

dependent living to be called Fortuna Village. He said at this stage he was unsure if he would proceed with the development. A significant part of Fortuna Villa itself has already been restored by Mr Banks whose ultimate goal is to convert the mansion into a prestigious hotel and function centre. Mr Banks estimated that 36,000 people have already visited Fortuna Villa which continues to be open to the public for high teas and functions.

THE competition for the Ultimate ADFA Open Day Experience closes today, so you have to act fast to earn the opportunity to enjoy an actionpacked adventure at the Australian Defence Force Academy. One of three high school winners from the 2015 competition, Darcie Andrea from Bendigo, described her ADFA Open Day experience as life-changing for her study and career goals. “Having a dream of attending ADFA and then continuing on to an ADF career, this jampacked two day experience was by far the most spectacular and exciting opportunity I have ever had,” she said. Winners will receive return flights to Canberra, two nights accommodation, a merchandise pack and will get to take part in a range of exclusive activities which aren’t on offer to the general public at the open day. The experience is for young Australians, between 16 and 22, with an interest in gaining military and leadership training while undertaking university study.

EXPERIENCE: Darcie Andrea “As part of their prize the winners may have the opportunity to tackle an over-water military obstacle course, fly a helicopter simulator, watch military displays and enjoy one-on-one time with Australian Defence Force personnel,” Commandant of ADFA Air Commodore Alan Clements said. The 2016 ADFA Open Day will be held on Saturday, August 27 and provides the opportunity to learn everything you need to know about life at Australia’s military and academic training institution. Competition entrants must explain, in 50 words or less, why they would make a great leader. The three strongest entries will win. Entries for the Ultimate ADFA Open Day Experience competition will close today. For further information and to enter the competition visit www.defencejobs.gov. au/ADFAOpenDay

Promises dissolved By patrick stafrace

WITH the Coalition officially forming government this week, some Bendigo organisations could be excused for feeling disappointed. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters will for a second-term represent the electorate in opposition, meaning funding commitments made during the campaign are to be shelved. During the eight-week campaign, Ms Chesters made a variety of election promises extending across the federal electorate to a variety of services.

The Bendigo RSL was the only organisation to receive bipartisan support with both the Coalition and Labor pledging $1.7m to fund upgrades for the Solders Memorial Institute. At the tail end of the campaign, Labor promised to spend $1.5m to reopen the Australian Emergency Management Institute in Mount Macedon. Labor also pledged $2m toward the Nolan Street Tennis Centre. At the centre of former Liberal candidate Megan Purcell’s campaign was the

proposed “ice task force”, underpinned by the Coalition’s nationwide commitment to tackle ice use in Australia. The Coalition’s commitment to extend the Medicare rebate freeze until 2020 and to abolish bulk bill spending will likely ensue. At the forefront of Labor’s commitment to health, Ms Chesters promised to restore $34m in nation-wide hospital funding which was cut by the Coalition in the 2014 budget. Labor also promised to remove the freeze on

Medicare rebates and continue funding for bulk-bill incentives. Ms Chesters’ position on the NBN has been clear: that Labor will continue to prioritise a fibreto-the-premises model in areas that are not under contract, arguing that the cost to implement a full fibre-optic service will meet budget constraints whilst providing superior internet speeds. NBN co will continue to implement the Coalition’s hybrid model, which will comprise of fixed wireless and fibre to the node technology.

And while she didn’t have official revenue figures when speaking

to the Weekly, she said the exhibition, including the Marilyn installation, has more than paid for itself. “While these big programs are a buzz, you can’t sustain that sort of energy all the time,” she said. Ms Quinlan said the next big exhibition would be in 2018. She denied that it would be centred around a member of the royal family. “I’m always on the hunt for new shows,” she said. “We know what we’re good at and there are some great opportunities out there.”

Mr Cameron said the opening of the new kitchen marks the first operational service for the project, and one that sets the tone of what is to come. “Our community will benefit from a much more advanced hospital in all aspects, one that’s poised to meet the healthcare needs of the future, and this new kitchen is a

The group is now operating the new kitchen, which opened with 80 staff members who made the employment transition from Spotless to Bendigo Health. They produce 750 meals, three times per day for patients and aged care residents. According to Mr Cochlan, improved efficiencies in nutrition, food service technology and patient satisfaction all play an important

role in delivering world-class healthcare. “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, and we’ve enjoyed welcoming Bendigo Health staff on board,” he said. Bendigo Health’s supply and procurement department also moved into the new facility recently. The supply area is the hospital’s central point for handling more than 25,000 dispatches and deliveries each year. Getting old? Heading into the 60s and it looks downhill all the way? Never fear, writer Renata Singer has had a look at our prospects in regard to the third act of life and says that there is much to look forward to (apart from the odd hip replacement or two). It is a myth she says that we will be miserable in our old age. “The data worldwide has shown there is a U-curve of happiness. We begin happy and as we move on from adolescence that curve dips and climbs up again as we get older,” Renata said. “We begin to appreciate our lives more.” Renata was motivated to write her latest book Older and Bolder: Life after 60 when facing the prospect of old age herself. “I was scared, I didn’t know what was in front of me,” she said. But after interviewing 28 active, productive women in old age, plus combining those interviews with comprehensive research, Renata says the news

However, while more books on ageing are being published, Renata said there still aren’t many older women represented in the media. “On the few occasions I do watch television the only older women I can recall seeing are the SBS news presenter Lee Lin Chin and the ABC’s Caroline Jones,” she said. “Film makers however are starting to catch onto the fact that the population is ageing.” Having said general visibility is still low, Renata also contends that we ghetto old people and consequently miss out on their company. “There’s a stereotype of older people as miserable and grumpy but I had a wonderful time talking to the subjects in my book.” To find out more information on how to get older and kick up your heals you can hear Renata speak at the Writers Festival in the Bendigo Bank Theatre at 4.45pm on the Saturday. She will also be speaking on the topic of books and morality with her husband, philosopher Peter Singer. They will be appearing at the Capital Theatre at 10.30am.

Conference of a global nature

obituary Cynthia Washington June 2, 1965 - April 21, 2016 CYNTHIA Washington was a remarkable Bendigo woman who devoted her life to helping the elderly, people with disabilities, the homeless, farmers, the Greek community and the indigenous people here in Bendigo and far-north Queensland where she lived for a time. She also helped some of the victims of the church who were part of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Cynthia raised many tens of thousands of dollars for hospitals and charities over the years. She helped members of the Motorcycle Riders Association of Victoria with their annual Christmas Toy Run. She had a brilliant mind and often did her research at the Bendigo library where she loved having a chat to the staff there. Her research included legal and commercial matters. Many times she helped a struggling farmer or small business owner from going broke. Depending on the issue she would take her concerns to politicians who found it hard to resist her persistence and well researched arguments. I could rarely walk down the street with Cynthia without someone coming up to me and telling me what wonderful things she had done for them. One time she came across a pregnant, 16-year-old single girl sleeping in Swanston Street. We couldn’t go home until Cynthia found her shelter for the night. She would often buy bottles of water and food for the homeless, even though she didn’t have much money herself. Cynthia never boasted of her achievements. She also knew how to have fun. Groundwater plan has the go ahead a landmark agreement to protect Bendigo and surrounding areas from rising groundwater has been given the green light. The $23.2 million funding deal between the state government and Coliban Water will see a three to five year transitional solution to protect Bendigo city and Central Deborah gold mine from uncontrolled discharges of groundwater. It will involve the construction of a pipeline from New Moon to Coliban Water’s Epsom water reclamation plant and proposed upgraded treatment facilities. The water will be treated to remove arsenic, rotten egg gas, other metals and salt. It’s proposed that clean water will be re-used or returned to the environment. In approving the agreement, minister for water Lisa Neville said the government is getting on with finding a permanent solution to rising groundwater.

“This ensures Bendigo remains a vibrant and thriving regional city,” she said. The plan is based on a preferred option recommended by the Bendigo Groundwater Community Reference Group and endorsed by the State and Local Government Advisory Group. A tender process will be undertaken for the design, construction and operation of the solution which will generate economic activity in the region. Naturally occurring groundwater within Bendigo’s network of disused and abandoned mines has been recovering to natural levels since mining ceased. Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said the plan will protect the city from uncontrolled discharges of groundwater. “It will keep the popular Central Deborah tourist mine operating,” she said

Flood management in Epsom, Ascot and Huntly Residents are invited to have their say on how to manage flooding in the Epsom, Ascot and Huntly areas which were strongly impacted by flooding in 2010 and 2011. Following the floods, The City of Greater Bendigo completed the Bendigo Urban Flood Study which showed that these areas, including many properties, would be subject to flooding from the Bendigo, Back and Racecourse Creeks in a severe storm event. The final aim of this project is to produce a program of works for funding applications that will be taken to both the State and Federal Governments for assistance with the implementation of the best solutions. Residents can provide their ideas: • at listening posts at Epsom Village shopping centre on Saturday July 16, 9am-2pm or Sunday July 17, 1pm-7pm • on the City’s Facebook page • at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay • on email eahfms@bendigo.vic.gov.au • phone Community Engagement Consultant Neil Dufty on (02) 9354 0300 • in writing to the City of Greater Bendigo, PO Box 733, Bendigo VIC 3552 All comments must be provided by Friday July 22, 2016. For more details contact City Project Manager Michael Kiley on 5434 6050.

You have to admit a long election campaign and a close result affects many people, their expectations are shattered and they have to face the fact that so many of their dreams were built on a lie. We only have to read Ken Price’s letter in the Bendigo Weekly, July 8 to realise that, along with many others, Ken was taken in hook line and sinker by the Labor party’s fear campaign based on that lie. Politicians and health experts accept that Medicare’s payment system is a shambles, and the quickest and most efficient way to solve the problem is to bring in private enterprise to at least fix it and perhaps run it more efficiently than it is at present. Let’s look at Ken’s concern about private providers in the health system, every time people go to their GP they are going to a private enterprise, likewise unless they are in a public hospital every radiology centre, pathology centre as well as the myriad of health professionals such as physiotherapist and chemists are in fact part of the private sector. If they are in hospital for an operation it is most likely that the surgery will be performed by a surgeon running a private enterprise working for the hospital on a fee for service system. All of their employees have access to our medical records, but the Labor party and Ken are saying honest men and women cannot be trusted if they work in a private enterprise. Only if they work in the union dominated public sector can they be trusted. What a slight on millions of hard working taxpaying Australians it is to say publicly, that they cannot be trusted. Like many in the Labor party Ken believes in spending money you do not have today and let future generations deal with the problem, because that policy will buy the votes of selfish people. Encouraging reading The City of Greater Bendigo Environment Strategy 2016-2036 draft document is available for public viewing, and it makes for much encouraging reading. Mainstream climate science is very clear: we are experiencing dangerous climate change now,

and much of the draft strategy is predicated upon this fact. I value highly Bendigo’s unique status as a city within a forest, and I believe that a healthy environment means a healthy community. I therefore welcome this well considered document, as it clearly identifies the established relationship between environmental degradation and social disadvantage – simply, that those people who already struggle the most in our community are the very people who will be impacted first and hardest by the negative health impacts and socio-economic upheavals of man-made global warming. Strong commitment to detailed strategies which address the fact of climate change is fundamental to issues of social justice and equity, and in any modern-day municipality a clear environmental strategy is increasingly essential for good governance. It is time to be expressly planning to move Bendigo towards 21st-century economic diversification. We have complex toxic legacies courtesy of the mining, manufacturing and energy production practices of the last century. Clean, green renewables industries mean jobs and business opportunities for Bendigo, and the draft strategy rightly envisions Bendigo as a leader in this field, a regional “hub” for re-

newable energy production. Bendigo is a city built upon the gold-rushes of the 19th and 20th centuries, and we are right to proudly acknowledge and respect that substantial part of our defining history, but it is now time to work together to move on to the fast-emerging new ways of generating opportunity, employment and prosperity in this 21st century. For this to happen we need strong leadership which values and respects the fragility of our shared natural environment and understands the irresponsible folly of a stubborn reliance upon the continued burning of fossil fuels for energy and everexpanding consumption. I commend the current City of Greater Bendigo staff and council on the release of this landmark strategy, and look forward to the adoption and implementation of the finalised City of Greater Bendigo Environmental Strategy, 2016-2036. Michelle Goldsmith, Whipstick Ward candidate, Eaglehawk

Reasons to say no My experience shows there are two main requests for the green organics exemption. Firstly are the ones that are already managing their green organics themselves. Council and other ratepay-

ers should be thanking these people for their contribution over the years in reducing landfill and as a result helping to keep everyone’s rates down. The second main reason is our senior citizens – listening to their stories about growing up in hard times and how this shaped their attitudes toward minimising waste is a privilege. These are the group of people that don’t need a green organics bin. Their weekly garbage bin is lucky if it has one or two bags of rubbish in it. They only put it out weekly because they don’t want the bin to be too heavy for them to take out. If you require assistance to apply for the exemption please contact me on 0472 770 893 and I will be happy to do your application online for you. Andrea Metcalf, Whipstick Ward candidate, Epsom

The glue that binds EVERY evening I noticed them. Two women, perhaps sisters, going for their regular walk. The reason they caught my attention was not just the regularity of their walk, it would generally be 6.30pm, come winter or summer, but more the fact that they pushed in front of them a young girl who evidently suffered from some cruel condition that rendered her limbs flailing and helpless. I imagined them as sisters or friends and the girl was most likely the daughter of one of them. I imagined the conversation. “We’ll take her out each day. It will give you a break, we can get some exercise as well.” They were obviously the result of a pact that involved caring, love and loyalty. I admired them every time I saw them. Unsung heroes who cared for the girl, who got on with life despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Of course they are not alone,

BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment these women. Every city, town and community is bound together by the generosity of spirit that binds them. Last week Bendigo’s Hindsight Club announced its inaugural Bendigo Women’s Community Achievement Awards. Most of the names were unfamiliar to us and that was the whole point. Hindsight Club representative Paul Byrne said the real heroes of any community are the people who get “their hands dirty” without expecting public recognition. Dorothy Durston for example received an award. Her son Rod-

ney was born profoundly deaf and with cerebral palsy. The strain of looking after her son in an era when their were relatively few services in Bendigo was considerable. But Dorothy never let Rodney go. And other people, like the late Tom Tweed, helped her hold onto him. Next week the Bendigo Autistic Advocacy and Support Service will be opening its doors for the first time. Rather than travel or wait or fret for a service for her children Beck Kelly pushed and pushed and organised the autism support service herself – with a lot of help from her friends. Without the women and men who reach out to those in need our city would fall away. There are some things that institutions can’t and don’t provide. And that is the love and generosity of our unsung heroes, the glue that binds the town.

Whipstick Ward councillor THE introduction of the kerbside organic collection has created a missed opportunity for council, the community and the environment to gain the maximum outcome. The process has fallen short. Bendigo needs an organic collection because 60 per cent of waste in rubbish bins is organic and we as a community are putting it into landfill. This generates greenhouse gases and excessive expenditure amounting to millions of dollars which can be avoided. The six-month trial of consultation with 2700 homes was very successful. Residents gave good feedback, it was flexible and it consisted of a fortnightly pick up of rubbish. This allowed for council trucks to pick up rubbish one week and organics the following week using existing trucks and staff with no

outside contractor. A very efficient process with no extra costs. A survey asked residents, “Does the fortnightly collection of the waste (red lid) suit your household needs?” The result – 67 per cent said yes and 33 per cent said no. Council opted for the conservative view. Introduce an organics collection

selected external contractors to pick up organics and have it delivered to Stanhope at a cost of more than $1 million for seven years, a whopping $7m to be paid by residents. The new service had an opportunity to reduce costs, reduce tonnage going to landfill and educate people to take responsibility for the waste that they

In return for processing your organics on your property you could be exempted from the new service and at the same time have a reduction in your rubbish pick up fee. With units and body

corporate entities a sense of community could have been promoted by bringing residents together to work out bin sharing so that small properties are not crowded with the three bin system. As a councillor I get repeated questions about council expenditure and the need to cut costs. This is an ideal service where council and residents could work together with the added bonus of caring for our environment. The issue is much broader and goes to the heart of why local government exists. We must work together and take bold steps for improvements. The same scenario operates at the Eaglehawk Landfill where savings can be made if businesses and residents get more involved in finding solutions and say it is not only the responsibility of council but it is our responsibility too.

Sporting chance for young hack O

H, how I have waited for this. In four years at the Weekly I’ve been on the front page, the back page, but never in the loftiest position reserved only for those who walk the corridors of power... Steve’s column. I have been the much-mocked subject of said column, concocted plenty of ideas for it and faithfully read it every week, but never have I been invited to write it. My inadequate ability to grow facial hair had been laughed at, as was the time I was mistakenly introduced as Noel. I took it in good faith thinking, “well at least I’m not referred to with disdain like Old, Old Nick” and assumed that I would be first off the bench if ever Steve needed a helping hand. So of course I bristled when the intern, Natasha, was asked to write the column after just three weeks in the office. Poor old neglected Noel, left out to dry while the intern comes in and takes all the glory. What more could I have done? Surely I have proven myself as borderline useful? Maybe it’s just the hard doneby attitude of the middle child in me? No, that can’t be right. It must be Steve’s fault. My sometimes moderately humorous rantings and ravings in the office can’t have gone unnoticed. What about the crowds of people that meander down View Street on their way back from the Marilyn exhibition, taking up the entire footpath at positively glacial

speeds? I could hammer out 500 words about that in no time. Or people at cafes that ask if I want sugar with my coffee after I have deliberately avoided asking for sugar during the process of ordering it? I am enraged at the mere thought of it. Maybe my material hasn’t been up to scratch, but having read most of Steve’s columns it seems as long as there is a cursory mention of at least one sheep, an oddly-named dog and it seems to pass the test. Even Di, in a near constant state of wearing sunglasses indoors, was afforded the opportunity to write it once or twice. It is entirely plausible that Steve takes great pleasure in watching me get rather worked up with the constant jibes about how I have not been asked to write the column, and that is why the privilege to this point has been withheld. After Steve allowed Tash to write the column, I bit the bullet. As she ever-so correctly wrote last week, I was indeed just the slightest bit annoyed at this decision. I marched in and asked Steve why I had not been afforded the luxury of the prime real estate in the paper, what possible reason he had for denying me the chance to unleash my very limited and extremely questionable creativity. He said I had never asked. Fair point really. Come to think of it, it is all a bit underwhelming. I don’t think I’ll be back. - Joel Peterson

ENNY Walker is no stranger to Bendigo. He’s played at so many of our local venues over the years he can probably find them quicker than a taxi driver. After an uncharacteristically long absence from VIC 3550 though, the indigenous troubadour from Echuca will be back on Saturday, July 23 to launch his new single, Oh No You Don’t. He hasn’t just been twiddling his thumbs. “Since the Through the Forest tour I’ve been playing a bunch of shows as well as writing and recording. I’ve done a full lap of the country as well as a month touring Canada in August of last year,” he said. Oh No You Don’t tackles mental illness. “The song is written as a triumph over, and a big ‘F you’ to mental illness. Feeling that you’ve learnt to, for the most part, be one step ahead of anxiety, knowing

the familiar warning signs and using your own experience to deal with it,” Walker said. Oh No You Don’t has a more contemporary soul vibe to Walker’s trademark blues and roots sound. It was recorded at Way Of The Eagle studios in Melbourne with ARIA Award winning producer Jan Skubiszewski, who has previously worked with The Cat Empire and John Butler Trio. It’s an interesting addition to Walker’s growing catalogue after two EPs and the three LPs including the lauded Sinners and Saints

and last year’s Through the Forest. Not surprisingly, he’s working on a new album. “I don’t have a title yet but hoping to have it out by the end of October.” Walker explains what he likes about playing in Bendigo. “The people. It’s as easy as that. Since the beginning of the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival, I’ve watched the music scene and the crowds grow steadily. It’s been a real joy to watch.” Walker’s involvement with music goes way back. “My dad is a guitar player and his father, Archie

HADES: shades of truth, shades of virtue, shades of evil – shades in all their incarnations run as a central theme through The Toymaker. Juxtaposing the horrors of World War II’s Auschwitz death camp with matter-of-fact 21stcentury consumerism in outer Melbourne, novelist Liam Pieper weaves together the experiences of contemporary toy manufacturer Adam and his grandfather, Holocaust survivor Arkady. A Russian medical student interned in Czechoslovakia for being homosexual, Arkady is singled out soon after his arrival at Auschwitz to assist in SS physician Josef Mengele’s “scientific research” program. There, he both suffers and inflicts previously unimaginable

cruelty, compromising his personal integrity and ethics in order to stay alive. At the same time, he reprises a craft learned back home in Russia: the craft of handcarving wooden toys. More than 70 years later Adam continues the Kulakov family tradition – a tradition not only of toymaking but also of navigating somewhat clumsily around inconvenient personal and business principles. A spontaneous vow to be “the kind of quickthinking alpha male who can seduce strange women when the opportunity arises, but doesn’t” is quickly abandoned; Adam pursues human and commercial conquests with equal zeal. This novel might have the word “toy” in its title but that is definitely

ou met William Walter Tyrell Stanford when he was in the saddle on what was described as “a pony” which managed to clear the steeplechase barriers with supposed ease. William Stanford had the great misfortune of bumping the horse on which Police Magistrate Lachlan MacLachlan was mounted. MacLachlan was most unimpressed by this teenager and the way he pranced on his mount. Calling on the police officers nearby to arrest Stanford, MacLachlan felt sure that this young upstart was not the legitimate owner of the horse that he was riding. Goldfields Commissioner Joseph A Paton who had witnessed the incident could see that the Police Magistrate had his pride wounded. Typically, Panton tried to pour oil over the troubled water. He calmly tried to reassure MacLachlan that it was only an accident, but Bendigo Mac would hear none of it. The police were instructed to interrogate Stanford, to determine the legitimate ownership of the horse. Stanford claimed that he had borrowed the horse

from an acquaintance, who he named. MacLachlan did not believe this and he had the teenager arrested and taken into custody. As no receipt of ownership for the horse could be produced from Stanford’s acquaintance at the subsequent court hearing, Lachlan MacLachlan sent Stanford to gaol for horse stealing. In 1853, there was no gaol as such in Bendigo, there were the logs which were overcrowded with those having been committed for far more petty offences. Horse stealing, however, was a serious crime for which a sentence of many years imprisonment was mandatory. Stanford was thus sent to the Pentridge Stockade on the very outskirts of Melbourne, at Coburg. This stockade had only been begun in 1851 and was far from complete at that time. Stanford had been given hard labour, which involved quarrying bluestone for building projects including that of Pentridge. Keeping company with hardened criminals and also those who were not in for the long haul, Stanford felt

hard labour: Stonemasons working in the same way as William Stanford.

very much embittered by his misfortune. He learnt much from this criminal class which was to influence some of his behaviour. However Stanford’s past experience as an apprentice stonemason prior to making his way to Victoria, stood him in good stead at this time. Petty criminals who were in Pentridge were always sympathetic to those who had longer sentences. The work parties that were quarrying and splitting stone laboured outside the confines of the Pentridge Stockade. There were guards to watch over the prisoners, some were closer to their work site than others almost like two rings. The guards had set themselves up in several inner

and outer positions in case a prisoner attempted to escape. With the help of some short term inmates, a hole was dug not far from where Stanford had been splitting stone. Gradually the hole was enlarged to such an extent that a person could easily hide in it. The guards were not too close to where prisoners were working so they never noticed the hole. At the end of the working day, guards would blow a whistle which was to signal the prisoners to line up, and when mustered together they were marched back to the Pentridge Stockade. The supervisors had failed to notice that William Stanford was not in the line-up. From available information it is evident that he was not missed for many hours.

AGLEHAWK Hire is pleased to promote two pieces of earth moving machinery for hire. One is the versatile and compact S70 skid steer loader. Because it is small it can be used around the house or the farm. The S70 (1.3tonne) machine has a 22.5 hp engine which powers a fully hydrostatic 4-wheel drive system. It is easy to load onto a trailer and features a smooth ride, excellent side and front visibility and an easy to read instrument panel. The other piece of machinery for hire that is proving very popular is their Wacker Neuson 1.5 tonne excavator. Described as compact but spacious, the excavator has a cabin with a generous size which gives the operator room to move. This solid piece of equipment is great for digging, laying pipes, trenches or landscaping. As well as the S70 and the excavator,

T’S winter and the days are cold and dark. Obviously it gets harder to get out into the freezing air and go for a ride or a run. So after all your good work don’t sit on the couch and put the weight back on. Keep your fitness up and workout at home with some fitness equipment from Mr Rental. Mr Rental has equipment that will suit your needs. They now have spin bikes and recumbent bikes. You can either adjust the exercise bikes manually or they have computer controlled bikes that program in hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. There are cross trainers that give you a low impact workout that is like skiing,

ideal if you hope to get up to the snow this year. All this equipment is well maintained and nice and quiet so you can still watch TV while you work out. Of course Mr Rental also has treadmills that suit all speeds and people sizes. From a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will carry 125kg and go at 16kph and while that might not sound fast compared to a car at 16kph you would travel over 5km in 20 minutes. So if you want to stay fit this winter then give Daryl at Mr Rental a call on 54435560 or 1800 880 778 or call in to 83 MacDougall Road Golden Square.

ORMER homicide detective and Victorian Police Association secretary Ron Iddles will be returning to Bendigo in November to once again support the 2016 Biggest Blokes Lunch. The year’s event is scheduled for Friday, November 18 at the Ulumbarra Theatre and organisers are hoping Bendigo men will once again support this worthwhile fundraiser, for finding a cure for prostate cancer, a cancer that will affect one in five men. In Australia, around 20,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually and more than 3000 men die of it - more than the number of women who die of breast cancer. Bendigo’s Biggest Blokes Lunch has raised in excess of $460,000 since 2010 and committee spokesman Keith

Have your say on the Loddon Mallee region’s future waste and resource recovery needs that are important to the Loddon Mallee communities. Feedback is now open.

Sutherland is confident that tally will easily pass $500,000 after this year’s lunch. “Regardless of how much we raise the important message is for men to have regular prostate checks,” Keith said. Over the years the majority of funds raised have been directed to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, who work tirelessly to reduce the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners and families. The local Bendigo Bendigo’s Prostate Support Group also benefits, and offers suffers, carers and survivors support through friendship at their regular support group meetings, held the last Thursday of every month at 6pm at the National Hotel. New advances with cataract surgery in Bendigo

FOCUSED: Peter Burt.

A

NEW state-of the-art Zeiss operating microscope has been recently installed at Bendigo Day Surgery. It has been specifically designed for cataract surgery with an additional computerised Callisto system which helps rectify astigmatisms during surgery. The Callisto system is unique to Bendigo (the only one in Country Victoria). This new system was introduced to Bendigo by Cataract Surgeon, Peter Burt, at the Bendigo Day Surgery. Peter is the Clinical Adjunctive Professor with Monash University in Bendigo who specialises in cataract surgery and general opthamology. “Astigmatism is common, usually due to the shape of our eyes, commonly

corrected by glasses,” Peter said. “When we undergo cataract surgery an IOL [implanted intraocular lens] replaces the cloudy lens. “Traditionally, IOLs were not able to be manufactured in astigmatic sizes. “Surgery commonly left patients reliant on glasses particularly for driving.” With the advent of IOLs correcting astigmatism, the need for glasses can be greatly reduced provided the new lens can be aligned accurately. That is where the

Callisto system comes in. Measurements taken at the Bendigo Eye Clinic are entered into the new microscope allowing the surgeon to orientate the IOL more precisely, reducing the patient’s astigmatism and improving vision. “It is a very exciting innovation which will further elevate cataract surgery in Bendigo,” Peter said. “With first class equipment and facilities here in Bendigo, patients will not

need to travel to Melbourne for cataract surgery. “Bendigo offers an excellent service in eye surgery. High quality, easily accessible and reasonably priced with your surgeon close by.” Peter is director of the Bendigo Eye Clinic and senior ophthalmologist at Bendigo Health. He operates at all Bendigo Hospitals: Bendigo Day Surgery, Bendigo Hospital and St John of God.

“Clients can use this rate or the log book method where you need to keep all receipts associated with your vehicle and claim the percentage that is work related. ”The medicare levy has also risen to two per cent.” Further changes include the administration of MyGov, where from now on your tax agent will not be receiving your assessment notice in the mail. The Australian Taxation Office will instead be sending it directly to you electronically. “If you decide to lodge your tax return through MyGov you may be missing out on deductions that you are entitled to,” Karen said while explaining that as a tax agent, she keeps up-to-date with the latest developments. “And If you claim family assistance you must lodge your returns for the previous financial year by the end of June, otherwise Centrelink will not pay the full family assistance entitlement.”

WITH more than 18 years of experience in accounting Karen Wellington of Wellington Tax, offers a fast and efficient solution to all of your accounting needs for both business and personal needs. So if you are seeking a professional and simple approach to your tax and accounting needs, look no further than Wellington Tax. Karen says the winners this year are small business entities with the recently announced instant asset write-offs, for assets costing less than $20,000 exclusive of GST. “This can also be claimed if your depreciation pool is less than $20,000 at the end of the year,” Karen said. “The date for this purchase must be after 7.30pm on the May 12 2015 until the end of June 2017.” Karen also warns all employers they also have to be ready for Super Stream. “It does take time to set up but once set up it only takes a few minutes each time.” There are also changes regarding motor vehicle expenses with a reduced kilometre rate of 66 cents for motor cars up to a maximum for 5000 kilometres Karen said.

Fun and games By JOEL PETERSON

FORMER Bendigo Spirit point guard Tessa Lavey will make her Olympic debut next month after being selected in the Australian Opals team for the upcoming games. The Perth Lynx captain, who led her side to a WNBL finals berth last season, was one of 12 players picked in the squad that raised eyebrows as coach Brendan Joyce left Suzy Batkovic out of the final team. Lavey joins Leilani Mitchell at the point guard spot. Erin Phillips, Katie-Rae Ebzery, Steph Talbot, Penny Taylor and Rachel Jarry fill

the wing positions. Laura Hodges, Nat Burton and Cayla George lead the big brigade, along with Marianna Tolo and Liz Cambage at centre. Former Catholic College Bendigo student Lavey, who grew up in Swan Hill, is one of seven Olympic debutants in the squad. Talbot, Burton, George, Tolo, Ebzery, Mitchell and George join Lavey as first timers at the games. “I still don’t know how to feel, it’s something you dream of as a kid. I’m just so happy and excited to be going, especially with this bunch of ladies involved and the coaching staff and

support staff, it’s just incredible,” the 23-year-old said. “I feel so lucky and I can’t wait to get over there and get started. “I think it’s one of the strongest teams and the cohesion that we have is quite incredible. Everyone wants to do well, there isn’t one person that wants to go out and do it for themselves. “Everyone is there to do it for each other, that is something that some of the other teams may not have and something that could be an advantage for us going into the Olympics.” The Opals will head to the USA for an exhibition tournament from July 28 to

CALDWELL STARS

RIO BOUND: Tessa Lavey August 1 in their final preparation before heading to Brazil. They will face world number one-ranked USA, as well as 2015 FIBA Americas Championship gold medallists Canada and 2012 silver medallists France in a four-

team tournament across Newark Delaware, Bridgeport Connecticut and New York City. The Opals play Canada on July 28 before tackling France two days later and rounding out with the USA on August 1.

Winning start for Boomers MATTHEW Dellavedova’s preparations for the Rio Olympics took a strange detour this week when he sat out the first game of the Australian Boomers farewell tour against the PAC-12 All Stars due to insurance issues. His clearance to play had not been approved and Dellavedova found himself sidelined in the win, along with injured big man Andrew Bogut and Melbourne United dynamo Chris Goulding. Despite the key players sidelined the Boomers had no trouble despatching of the US Collegecomprised team after a slow start. Aron Baynes led the Aussies with 28 points and nine rebounds to lead the charge for the Boomers in a dominant paint performance. Fellow NBA player Patty Mills scored 15 and strong performances from Kevin Lisch, Cameron Bairstow and David Andersen saw the Aussies run out 92-83 winners. “Everything from our point of view was done by Friday and we thought we’d get something overnight but it didn’t happen,” Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis said. Dellavedova suited up in last night’s game. GOOD START: The Boomers recorded a win on Tuesday.

GOLDEN Square footballer Jye Caldwell’s star continues to rise as the standout junior was named MVP of the AFL Under-16 Championships on the Gold Coast. Caldwell, playing for Vic Country, was the side’s best in a round one win over Vic Metro, and was also in the best in two further wins. Rochester’s Jacob Atley, brother of North Melbourne half-back Shaun and Bendigo Pioneers captain Joe, was also impressive for Vic Country. South Australia went undefeated to win the title.

THUNDER ROLLS ON THE Bendigo Thunder meets second placed Melbourne Uni in a top-ofthe-table clash in the Victorian Women’s Football League premier division on Sunday. The Thunder took a narrow two-goal win against Deer Park under lights at the QEO last Saturday in front of a packed grandstand. Roos’ revenge By JOEL PETERSON

YET another top-of-the-table clash takes place this weekend in local football when Mitiamo meets Loddon Valley Football League powerhouse Bridgewater on Saturday. Mitiamo withstood a fierce charge from Calivil United last weekend to run out winners by three points in a clash of second versus third on the table, and this week Mitiamo faces up to the league’s biggest challenge in the six-time reigning premiers. Bridgewater has been dominant once again this season, undefeated through 12 games with a percentage of over 308. The Mean Machine’s closest call came against Calivil United in round six when they defeated the Demons by 19 points, the only time they have scored less than 100 points all season. In round five Bridgewater defeated the Roos by 23 points, marking the lone occasion Bridgewater has conceded more than 65 points in what has been an otherworldly 2016 campaign. Mitiamo’s form has been up and down for a side which has lost only one game, winning four of its contests by under three goals and at times looking one dimensional with spearhead Justin Maddern

RUNNING POWER: Mitiamo’s Luke Lougoon. up forward. The Roos have bounced back in recent weeks to hit their straps five weeks out from the finals series and will need no reminders of just how competitive they were last time out against Bridgewater. The Roos jumped out of the blocks in round five but conceded an eight-goal second term as the Mean machine took a hold of the contest. Mitiamo will have to find goalkickers other than Maddern if it is to be a chance, with Doug Thomas, Ben Bacon, Terry Reeves, Mitch Sidebottom and Joel Pianto needing to all

have impact on the scoreboard as they did against Calivil. Bridgewater has a plethora of forward options but is equally strong down back, putting an emphasis on Mitiamo ruckman Mick I’Anson and the Roos’ midfield brigade. The A-grade netball clash also sees two top five sides battle it out when top side Mitiamo, coming off their first loss of the season, faces fourthplaced Bridgewater. Other round 14 games see Bears Lagoon Serpentine host Newbridge, Inglewood tackle Marong and YCW travel to Pyramid Hill.

Finals fight heats up WHILE the top five race looks all but settled in the Bendigo Football Netball League’s senior football competition, it is very much alive in an outstanding Agrade netball season. One game separates top side Sandhurst and third-placed Golden Square and the mix is just as tight after that with four points between Maryborough in fourth and Gisborne in seventh. The Dragons have lost just once this year and hold a significant percentage advantage over second placed Kangaroo Flat, with Square a game back in third. The Bulldogs have been dealt a significant blow to their flag defence with star goal shooter Gabe Richards ruled out for the remainder of the season due to foot surgery, but it did not stop them from thumping Strathfieldsaye to the tune of 15 goals last weekend. Gisborne was one of the pre-season fancies but has struggled with injuries and inaccurate shooting to win just five of its opening 11 games and sit a game behind the sixth-placed Storm after close losses to Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square. The Dogs have a big opportunity to claim a valuable win against Sandhurst, despite the Dragons beating

them 57-40 in round four. Maryborough has been a pleasant surprise under the tutelage of coach Ingrid Hopkins sitting fourth at 6-5 with an opportunity to press its case for finals over the next three weeks. The Magpies have pushed the likes of Sandhurst and Square in their recent outings and face a vital clash against top five rivals Kyneton on Saturday before facing Strathfieldsaye and Kangaroo Flat in the follow-

ing fortnight. The games between the sides from fourth to seventh – of which there is at least one every week for the remainder of the season – will be crucial to determining which sides make finals. Saturday’s round of matches sees Sandhurst host Gisborne, Maryborough at Kyneton, Strathfieldsaye face Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat at home to South Bendigo and Golden Square play Castlemaine.

Hogan’s Hawks flying high From Page 32 “I’m really looking forward to it, it will be a great challenge,” Hogan said. “Both sides are playing good footy and play really attacking styles, we both have probably seven or eight guys who have kicked double digit goals and it’s a really important game in terms of where we’ll both finish up so it’s an exciting prospect.” While the Hawks host the clash the Bombers are no strangers to Huntly hav-

ing played there in last year’s grand final and have won each of their last three clashes against the Hawks. “We really found it hard to counter that second or third tall the first time, but since adding Michael Fitzgerald we are a bit better placed there,” Hogan said. “We’d like to think we probably have a bit bigger bodies with Luke Semmel and Adam Jukes and those guys that open up the space for the likes of Harry (Whittle) and Ryan (Semmel).

“I think we have to respect that press, and be more accountable to them. Then we get the ball be brave enough to run and hurt them going back the other way. “That’s the message the boys will get and hopefully it’s enough to get us across the line.” In other round 15 HDFL games While Hills hosts fifth-placed Elmore, LBU is at home to North Bendigo and Mount Pleasant takes on Heathcote while Colbinabbin has the bye.

Hawks ready to swoop

By JOEL PETERSON

HUNTLY coach Jamie Hogan is confident his side can stand up to the Heathcote District Football League’s biggest test when the Hawks host Leitchville-Gunbower on Saturday. Both sides are big ground specialists – with Leitchville, Gunbower and Huntly the three biggest grounds in the HDFL – and are the two highest scoring teams in the league. What’s more, they are also both coming off thrashings of Mount Pleasant last time out. Those aspects hold obvious similarities but the sides themselves are almost like-for-like across the ground, making for a mouth-watering contest. “I think both sides are really similar, we’ve probably got a little bit different game styles but the personnel matches up fairly well,” second year Huntly coach Jamie Hogan said. “They do like to play a full ground press and that grabbed us last time so we will have to adjust to that and counteract that, but we’ve got different match ups that we can work on from that last game. “We are very similar but we definitely have different game styles, so it should be a good game.”

Huntly’s strength lies in its midfield with the likes of former Cheatley medallist Ryan Semmel, Harry Whittle, Gavin James, Jaydon Cowling, Stacy Fiske, Matt KleinBreteler and Phil Ryan among a host of Hawks giving the side plenty of run.

CLASSY: Ryan Semmel kicks long. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

I think both sides are really similar The Bombers match it with Huntly in the pace department thanks to the likes of Jackson McEwen, Riley Keath, Adam Decicco and Will Brereton while Samuel Kennedy and Ayden Walton have added to last year’s side which finished runners up to North Bendigo. Throw in key position options with Tim Lincoln, Lee Pollock and Cam Ross to combat Huntly’s Dave Symons, Tom Skewes and Michael Fitzgerald and the excitement surrounding the contest isn’t limited to just the punters.
