The generosity and involvement of friends and alumni like you are reshaping campus and improving opportunities for students. This annual report is testament to what we’ve accomplished together to advance the University and to help all students achieve their dreams through a BGSU education. Thank you for all you do for BGSU! Inside this report, you will read how lifelong Falcon basketball fan Bill Frack turned his love of the game into the largest private gift in University history. You will also see how a significant gift-in-kind is transforming the Visual Communication Technology program and allowing BGSU to become the first university in Ohio to offer specialized training in the sustainable corrugated industry. And, you will learn how a group of Falcon hockey alumni and friends are nurturing their team through the Bring Back the Glory campaign. If the BGSU Foundation is a vehicle to enrich the student experience at BGSU, your involvement in the Alumni Association is the engine. We recognized the professional successes of 24 alumni and friends and their service to this institution during the annual Alumni Awards. Three talented Alumni Laureate Scholars graduated debt-free after preparation for bright careers in business, creative arts, and healthcare thanks to the generosity of people like you. We were also pleased that the University chose to recognize a special alumnus with an honorary doctorate during commencement in May. Shantanu Narayen ’86, president and CEO of Adobe Systems, one of the world’s most recognizable software brands, received an honorary Doctor of Applied Science degree. The results of your service and involvement were especially visible this year, as the University was transformed by the most ambitious construction project in its history. We invite you to visit campus this year, and join us in celebrating all of the special accomplishments. On behalf of the faculty, staff and students who benefit from your generosity and involvement, again, thank you!
Thomas S. Hiles Vice President, University Advancement/ President and CEO, BGSU Foundation, Inc.

Adobe CEO accepts honorary doctorate
Honorary doctoral degrees are reserved as the highest honor a college or university may bestow. Many institutions award the honor to an accomplished visitor or public figure, but it is a rare event when one of their own alumni earns such recognition. Narayen leads one of the world’s largest software brands with products such as Adobe Photoshop software, Adobe Acrobat software and Adobe Flash Player. President Barack Obama recently appointed Narayen to his Management Advisory Board.
2 0 1 0 - 11 |
That spirit of inclusion should also carry into the hiring process, Narayen said, because the best prospective employees may not look the best on paper. “I look for passion. I look for people who have a desire to do something meaningful,” he said. “And experience, I think, is a little overrated. Because if somebody has passion, they are going to figure out how to be successful. It is one of those intangible qualities, but you can tell when you speak to somebody. Is this is going to be another job, or are they here for a particular reason?”
Narayen was also named one of the University’s 100 Most Prominent Alumni in 2010 during the centennial celebration.

“I think in my job, you have to create a vision for where the organization can go and then you build a great team that helps the company get there. And good ideas come from everywhere in the company. We’ve always talked about that. So, if you can create a culture where the desire to innovate exists, I think that’s how I would describe my management style. Collaborative, inquisitive,” he said.
W o r t h
Narayen participated in commencement for the first time in May, when he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Applied Science degree during Bowling Green State University’s College of Arts and Sciences commencement ceremony. He and his wife, Reni, spent time on campus after the ceremony to visit with President Carol A. Cartwright and friends they met as students.
The key to managing a successful business is to nurture communication and to remain open to new ideas, Narayen suggests.

He never donned the cap and gown the first time around. Adobe President and CEO Shantanu Narayen was already working full-time, so he couldn’t attend his 1986 graduation ceremony when he completed his master’s degree in computer science at BGSU.

Cheryl Krueger ’74 built her empire on a sweet tooth with her college roommate, baking their ways from one cookie bakery in Columbus to the $50 million Cheryl & Co. Krueger was highlighted as commencement speaker in August, 2010, shortly after she was selected among the 100 Most Prominent Alumni in celebration of BGSU’s centennial. She shared how her education at BGSU Firelands helped fulfill her dreams, despite growing up poor, and encouraged graduates to give back to their community by volunteering. “Life lesson number one, don’t let anyone or anything or any event define your success or take your dreams away from you,” she told the commencement audience. She described many of the challenges she faced as a female entrepreneur at the graduation ceremony for more than 1,200 graduates. It was a struggle to open the business with her business partner and former roommate, Caryl Walker. The women had minimal cash flow and Krueger worked a second job to keep the business going, because they couldn’t secure a bank loan as single women. She also explained the pain she felt when Walker died of cancer in 1986, just five years after they founded the business.
6/7
Even so, she expanded the business over the years. Cheryl & Co. products have been featured on QVC, The Food Network, CNN and talk shows including those of Rachael Ray and Ellen DeGeneres. She sold the cookie, gourmet dessert and gift basket retailer to 1-800-Flowers in 2005. She remained CEO until her 2009 retirement. Since retiring, she founded KRUEGER + CO. Consulting, Inc. to help companies develop creative marketing and sales strategies and improve financial performance. “I was the first generation of my family to go to college,” she has said. “My father burst into tears during a graduation breakfast at President Hollis Moore’s house because he was so proud that I was graduating from college.” She is a member of the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame, and was selected as Female Entrepreneur of the Year by Working Woman Magazine. She also helps to raise funds for non-profit groups, travels to Appalachia each year with her church to help families in need, and serves on the boards of several organizations, including The James Cancer Hospital and The Ohio State University Foundation Board.

Student group awarded for alumni work
The awards are a unique opportunity to recognize the Student Alumni Connection, which serves as the bridge with alumni and is one of the only campus organizations that considers all BGSU students to be members. Student leaders of the group come from all majors, and many are involved in other campus organizations such as Undergraduate Student Government, the BG News or faith-based organizations.

Both students were recognized for their awards at a regional conference of CASE, which includes the BGSU Student Alumni Connection among 300 similar studentalumni groups at member institutions.

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) honored undergraduate Kala Zink ’12, an English major of St. Marys, Ohio, as “Outstanding Student Leader,” and graduate student Denica Brooks ’11, a college student personnel major of Flint, Mich., as “Outstanding Advisor.” Both were recognized for their involvement in the student group during a regional conference of CASE, which is widely recognized by professionals in higher education as the leader in defining best practices in fundraising and alumni relations.
“Student Alumni Connection provides good networking opportunities, shows and teaches students how they can remain involved with the University after they graduate, and provides connections to notable Falcon graduates,” said Kelli Daniels, assistant director of alumni and development at BGSU. “Students develop natural connections to alumni at the college level.”
These University students competed against others from institutions in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The recognition also allowed the Student Alumni Connection to compete at the national level.

Technology continually influences our daily lives. Many people, particularly many college graduates, don’t stray too far from their now ubiquitous smartphone. Tablet devices are steadily becoming the hallmark of a wireless workforce. The students who sit in the classrooms and lecture halls at BGSU and even within primary education are being equipped with the latest in digital applications to change the face of learning as well as teaching. The Falcon alumni community is no different. Summer 2011 marked the culmination of a nearly two-year process to upgrade the central database systems that allow the BGSU Alumni Association and BGSU Foundation to serve alumni and donors in a variety of ways. While basic information related to academics and degrees is at the heart of it all, there are many other features that will take a more public role moving forward. “When it comes to providing services and benefits for the University community, we are only as successful as the accuracy of our data,” said Susan Dunn, director of information services for University Advancement. “For alumni and others to stay connected in this day and age, they need accurate, timely information and tools at their fingertips. Our system will now offer much better networking services to help provide that.”
10/11
Alumni will recognize several upgrades to the secure, online community where they have long stayed connected through an alumni directory and professional network. The new community launched in November 2011 after an nine-month renovation period. Improvements include an event calendar where locally hosted events may be listed, resumé and job posting options, a polished interface and improved networking with alumni chapters and societies. “It is a cornerstone of our mission to support the personal and professional growth of Falcon alumni,” said Montique Cotton Kelly ’94, ’04, executive director of the BGSU Alumni Association. “These improvements, and others planned for the future, will go a long way toward helping us fulfill that mission.” Connect with old friends and classmates, build your professional network, get involved with an alumni chapter and more at bgsualumni.com.
BGSU continues investment in reconnecting alumni
Behind-the-scenes improvements broaden the Falcon experience online
L e tt e r f r o m B G S U F o u n d a ti o n B o a r d C h a i r Fall 2011 On behalf the Board of Directors of the BGSU Foundation, Inc., thank you for your support and involvement with BGSU. The BGSU Foundation, Inc. exists to serve Bowling Green State University. The Board members of the Foundation work to provide solid and reliable stewardship of the investments you’ve made in the University. Your gifts are invested and spent responsibly to provide new educational opportunities to students, to support faculty growth, and to build and maintain outstanding campus facilities. I’m pleased to share the Foundation’s annual report. You’ll find news inside about a challenge posed by three Foundation Board members to raise undesignated/unrestricted funds. I’m proud that my colleagues Joseph Conda, Bruce Misamore and Tom Orchard have shown their commitment to BGSU through their offer to match up to $500,000 in unrestricted gifts. These types of gifts are important, because the money may be spent wherever the immediate need is greatest on campus. The annual report is filled with other stories of generosity, as University friends and alumni invest in students through varied scholarships and programs. Again, thank you for your commitment to improving the educational experience for BGSU students. I hope you will find the enclosed information to be clear and relevant. Please contact the Foundation if you have any questions about what you see here. Sincerely,
Everett E. Gallagher ’83 Chair, BGSU Foundation Board of Directors

The results for the 2010-2011 fiscal year reflect continued strong support from the Foundation’s donors, strong investment performance and administrative cost control. Restructuring of the investment portfolio with an emphasis on growth, balanced with diversification, appropriate risk management and liquidity requirements has provided a solid foundation for the investment of the Foundation’s assets for the long-term.

A gift to Bowling Green State University will give you a feeling of personal satisfaction and demonstrate your belief in the mission of BGSU. Every gift to the University is appreciated.
Real Estate and Personal Property*, including residences, vacation homes, farms and valuable items, such as art, make wonderful gifts and enjoy significant tax savings.
Whether you are in a position to provide support through a cash gift or one of the other gifting options below, we invite you to consider the one or a combination of methods which best fits your financial situation.
Retained Life Estate* allows the donor to make a gift of their home, farm or vacation home, obtain an immediate income tax deduction and still continue to use the property for as long as they wish. Only after the donor no longer needs the property will BGSU assume the usual ownership rights.
Gifts can be made using: › Cash
› Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express– by phone, mail or online at givetobgsu.com
Bequests* through a will or living trust enable a donor to make a substantial gift to the BGSU Foundation, Inc. without drawing from assets during his/her lifetime. Bequests usually specify a percentage or specific dollar amount of the donor’s estate. Bequest gifts should use the Foundation’s legal name, Bowling Green State University Foundation, Inc.
› Securities and Mutual Funds*– electronically transferred or by paper to the BGSU Foundation, Inc. to receive a charitable contribution based on the value. The donor should sell depreciated securities before making the gift to realize the loss for tax purposes.
Beneficiary Designations and Contingency Designations* Part of retirement funds, life insurance policies and other assets in which you name the BGSU Foundation, Inc. as direct or contingency beneficiary. These designations can make a significant impact in the future.
Matching Gifts can more than double a gift if the donors or his/her spouse’s employer has such a program. All that is needed is a form from the employer’s personnel/public relations/human resources office.
Gifts-in-Kind* Contributions of tangible items, such as books, musical instruments, technical equipment and objects of art, which can be used for teaching, outreach and research activities at the University.
Charitable Gift Annuities and Charitable Remainder Trusts* allow a donor to transfer a gift of cash, marketable securities or property in exchange for a lifetime income.
*Please contact the BGSU Office of Development at 888-839-2586 or 419-372-2424 for more information about these gifting options.
› Electronic fund transfers–a monthly contribution via an automatic deduction from either a checking or savings account,
Charitable Lead Trusts* provide income to the BGSU Foundation, Inc. for a set number of years, after which the remainder may be transferred back to the donor or the donor’s heirs.
In addition, if your graduation years are incorrectly listed please contact us. Record-keeping methods have changed over the years, creating some inconsistencies in graduation years for alumni who graduated prior to 1981 and received multiple BGSU degrees. To correct your information, contact Records Management at 888-839-2586.

Names are included for those who made gifts during the 2010-11 fiscal year (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011). If we have inadvertently omitted your name or if your name is incorrect in the listing, we apologize and encourage you to contact the Office of Alumni and Development, 888-839-2586, so that we may correct our records and acknowledge you properly in subsequent recognitions.

Challenge inspires Foundation Board to raise unrestricted funds Three members of the BGSU Foundation Board of Directors are challenging their peers to raise undesignated funds to offer flexible cash to be spent wherever the need is the greatest at the University.
Tom Orchard ’75, of Westerville, Ohio, Bruce Misamore ’72, ’73, of Houston, and Joseph Conda, of Perrysburg, have committed to match up to $500,000 in funds pledged by others on the Foundation Board. Their generous challenge match could build a $1 million fund for undesignated funds. The need for undesignated or unrestricted funds became apparent to board members during the recent economic downturn, when many endowed scholarship funds went “under water.” That means funds fell below the balance determined by the Foundation to be the minimum to generate revenue in order to perpetually maintain the balance of the endowment. Most tuition scholarships are endowed at a minimum of $25,000, then strategically invested to generate an average revenue of about $1,000 per year for each student scholarship. So, if an endowed tuition scholarship dips below a balance of $25,000, no student will receive those scholarship funds for that year until the balance returns to normal.
Misamore said he challenged his peers to give because he recognized a pressing need for building undesignated funds. Misamore said it was his experience as a scholarship recipient as both an undergraduate and graduate student that first inspired him to give back to his alma mater, and he has contributed for more than two decades. “About 98 to 99 percent of our funds are restricted, so whenever the University has a need they really can’t come to the Foundation. Our hands are tied, because we can’t touch restricted funds. So, we really need a substantial pool of undesignated, or unrestricted funds,” Misamore said. He added that he’d like to see undesignated funds increase to become at least 20 percent of the Foundation’s assets.

“I felt that it was a pretty good thing, to try to build up moneys in an unrestricted, undesignated fund so that the University could have access to a pool of this discretionary-type money they would use to pursue some initiative they might not otherwise be able to,” Conda said. “If you take on the responsibility of being a member of a Foundation Board, then I think that it’s pretty incumbent upon the person to demonstrate some leadership and commitment to the mission and vision of the foundation and University and continue to drive it to a higher level.”

The BGSU Foundation, Inc. recently used undesignated funds as a loan to the Department of Athletics for the purchase of four new 75-foot lights to illuminate Cochrane Stadium for the men’s and women’s soccer programs. The loan of about $400,000 is being repaid to the BGSU Foundation through the successfully completed fundraising campaign to purchase the lights and perform several upgrades in the soccer stadium.
Another board member and challenge contributor is Conda, who gives with his wife, Judith. The Condas are not BGSU alumni, but started supporting scholarship programs and community partnerships through the University after developing a relationship with Woodlane, a healthcare and social service provider in Bowling Green for adults with developmental disabilities. They were impressed by the care Woodlane employees provided to a family member, and learned that many employees were current BGSU students or alumni, Conda said. He’s pleased to add undesignated funds to the list of his contributions on campus.

Restoring underwater scholarships is one of many potential uses for undesignated funds. Undesignated funds are used carefully where the need is greatest, perhaps as grants to assist during emergencies or unanticipated needs, for preparation related to the upcoming comprehensive campaign, or for other University priorities. Funds are carefully spent according to guidelines established by the Foundation Board of Directors, and the BGSU Foundation president, Tom Hiles, must approve the use of the funds.
Lifetime Giving Societies These recognition levels are reserved for donors who have established a significant relationship with Bowling Green State University through a gift or gifts over a lifetime. Love of the game brings historic gift for men’s basketball Findlay native and lifelong Falcon fan William Frack has committed to strengthen the men’s basketball program for generations with a $10 million gift. His gift is the largest, single private gift in BGSU’s history. His gift is a series of irrevocable trusts, and also represents the largest one-time gift ever designated to a Mid-American Conference basketball program. The Findlay/Hancock Community Foundation will serve as the trustee for the donor — advised fund established by Frack’s estate plan. “This is a program changer for Falcon basketball,” Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said when Frack announced his gift in February. “Bill’s gift is an extraordinary gesture and dramatically impacts the future of the men’s program.”
Frack’s father first brought him to watch the Falcons play in 1948 in the old Men’s Gym, and he has remained a devoted fan with nearly 800 games under his belt. “Some of my fondest life memories center around this program,” said Frack. “Many of the relationships and life-long friendships that I have built are because of my passion for Falcon basketball. Sixty years ago, it didn’t cost much to run a Division I basketball program and be successful. Today, that is a very different case. If Butler and Gonzaga can do it, Bowling Green can do it. So, I am following my passion and am proud to provide these future financial resources to take Falcon basketball to the next level.” Frack’s generosity also helped the Falcons find their home in the University’s beautiful new arena and convocation center, the Stroh Center. In 2008, he provided one of the leadership gifts to name the arena’s main playing surface the Bill Frack Court. “Bowling Green and this basketball team have brought me so much joy throughout my lifetime, and I’d like to share that experience with as many people as possible,” Frack said.

$5 million gift revamps VCT curriculum The BGSU Visual Communication Technology program has received the largest gift in its history — software and refurbished equipment valued at about $5 million — from the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF), EskoArtwork, and EFI. The gift is allowing BGSU to become the first university in Ohio to offer courses related to the design of corrugated boards and substrates, which promises job prospects for students in the $23.6 billion-ayear corrugated packaging and display industry. Corrugated, which includes cartons and the sort of freestanding cardboard stands you see highlighting a product in a grocery aisle, is the most popular and costeffective way to ship goods in the nation. More than 90 percent of all retail products are delivered or displayed in the rigid board, which is also an environmentally sustainable product. The equipment is now part of a new curriculum for he VCT program, which offers students experience in photography, video, print and interactive media in order to become marketing problem solvers for their employers.
The gift includes software for three-dimensional computer aided design by EskoArtwork, an international company with offices in the Dayton area, and a refurbished sample table purchased by ICPF that allows designs to be cut into shape. EFI is donating a large format UV-ink printer that can print on materials as large as billboards and up to 1.75 inches thick. “It will open up knowledge and skill sets for them,” said Laney Fugett, a lecturer for VCT. “There’s so much potential that this lab adds to our current students and future students.” Senior Nikki Adkins, 22, of Brookpark, Ohio, developed a special interest in the industry during a co-op — one of the three required of VCT majors — designing corrugated displays to market boxed valentines for a division of American Greetings last year. “The VCT program has changed so much since I was a freshman. It’s amazing how much they update and how much software in the industry has changed,” Adkins said. “It’s absolutely amazing to have this technology come to the college.”

Biggest reunion gift will fund PLA scholarship The Class of 1960 made history as they raised the largest reunion gift in University history. The group collectively presented $706,000 to their alma mater during their 50th reunion. Many of their reunion gifts were designated for the Sidney A. Ribeau President’s Leadership Academy, after the Class of 1960 Reunion Committee agreed to recommend the program to their peers for class gifts. As the committee considered the various scholarships and campus programs to potentially recommend for their class gifts, the PLA program was quickly and unanimously identified, said Bob Battaglia, chair of the Class of 1960 Reunion Committee. “We were all pretty impressed,” Battaglia said. “I thought these kids were more interested in their education than I was in those days.” PLA students are chosen based on their academic and leadership potential after an interview for the four-year scholarship program. PLA facilitators provide tutoring and professional mentoring for students throughout their college experience. First-year students receive special preparation for college life during an intense summer orientation program that helps them hone their study skills and identify leadership opportunities on campus and in the community. To continue receiving the renewable tuition assistance, students in the PLA program must maintain their grade point average and campus involvement.
Another member of the Class of 1960 Reunion Committee, Ray Marvin, said he was pleased — though not surprised — when his group broke records with the gift. “I trust that the following class, the Class of 61, will exceed the amount we raised. I certainly hope so,” said Marvin, chair of the reunion’s gift committee. “We intended to set the bar high and suggest that people try to jump over it.” Many of those who donated in honor of their 50th reunion had never given to the BGSU Foundation before for various reasons. “Some were in a better financial situation, or their kids were grown up,” Battaglia said. “Others were just reminiscing about everything they learned at BGSU; the exposure to different people from different socioeconomic groups or people they wouldn’t have met in their hometowns. Just how BGSU helped them to be a better person. It was time to give back and pay it forward.” Marvin suggested that most of his 1960 classmates were just ready to say “thank you” to BGSU. “We benefitted from the quid pro quo, our tuition for an education,” Marvin said. “But we received much more. We were enabled with a vision of our abilities to create value in the world. We attended Bowling Green, and Bowling Green ignited our potential.”

Campaign half-way to $5 million goal for hockey
The Bring Back the Glory campaign has raised almost $2.7 million of its $5 million goal to preserve the strong tradition of BGSU hockey. The continuing success of the campaign is thanks to leadership gifts from Dr. Jack R. Vivian ’67, ’90, who was the first Falcon hockey coach; Steven A. Green ’90 and Al Green, local real estate entrepreneurs; Scott Slater ’73, a lifelong hockey enthusiast; and the Pioneer Fund of Denver, Colorado on behalf of Scott Hamilton, honorary campaign chair and Olympic gold medalist in figure skating, and Alissa Czisny ’09, U.S. women’s figure skating champion. BGSU boasted one of the country’s best hockey programs in the 1970s and 1980s. They won the 1984 NCAA National Championship in Lake Placid in four overtimes, the longest collegiate hockey championship game in history. The campaign promises to continue that legacy. “The Bring Back the Glory campaign is important not only to secure the viability of the hockey program but to maintain its importance to the Bowling Green community and University,” said Mike Pikul ’84, a player on the championship team and co-chair of the Bring Back the Glory campaign along with teammate Garry Galley. “The goal of the program is to get back to the elite level and compete for another national title, and the campaign will hopefully assist this effort.”
One of the latest contributions to the campaign came from the family of a former player who participated as the team established a winning foundation in the several years leading up to the 1984 championship. The Yves Pelland Memorial Hockey Scholarship Endowment will recognize student-athletes’ achievements in hockey and remember the player Falcon fans knew affectionately as “our Frenchman.” Yves overcame the language barrier and distance from his family in Montreal to thrive as a top scorer and team leader during his collegiate hockey career as a Falcon. He graduated in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in business selling and sales management, and enjoyed success as a business consultant. The memorial scholarship in his name marks the four year anniversary of his death and was established by his loving family, his wife, Katia, and daughter, Klara. Support of the Bring Back the Glory campaign is an investment in that legacy and the future of BGSU hockey. To contribute, visit givetobgsu.com/glory.
