Thoughtful Gifts that can be Found at Local Shops By Leslie Hurrell Public Relations Intern
T
he Holidays are right around the corner, and that can put a lot of stress on student shoppers as they try to find the perfect gift for loved ones while wrestling with finishing off fall semester. Sometimes it gets difficult buying the same person a gift every year over and over, so the situation calls for something new and thoughtful. A great place to start is your local stores and small businesses. Downtown Bowling Green has some great and unique stores to start your holiday shopping.
Grounds For Thought
For Keeps
Coyote Beads
Grounds For Thought is a cozy coffee shop and bookstore with drinks and baked goods. You can purchase ground coffee and tea for your loved one, which would be a great idea for college students. Also, they offer gift certificates. The coffee shop is donating all of their proceeds from brownie sales to Secret Santa Society, which donates food and toys to local families in need. Stop in and have a brownie and give back!
For Keeps is a locally owned shop that has a wide range of gift options. They sell Yankee Candles, home dĂŠcor, mugs, religious gifts, and ornaments. In the jewelry category, For Keeps sells the ever-popular Alex and Ani bracelets that are a big hit among young adults. Also, they sell Lokai bracelets, which bring in the highs and lows of the earth to keep you balanced, specifically mud from the Dead Sea, and water from Mount Everest.
Aside from For Keeps, Coyote Beads is a locally owned jewelry store with many unique gift options. You can purchase handmade jewelry, or create your own. Coyote Beads offers classes to learn how to make a variety of jewelry pieces, which would make for a great heart-felt gift for any loved one. The store has classes almost every Saturday until Christmas, and the prices range from $15 to $30.

Gift Cards:
allow flexibility and fun for the gift receiver By Leslie Hurrell Public Relations Intern
T The cards give these young adults the freedom to choose what they need or what they truly want, rather then having them return unwanted gifts after the holidays.
“I like to get people gift cards because it shows that I put thought into what I want to get them, but allows me to make sure it will be something that they want.”
For the nights that students don’t feel like cooking, or just have that “Chipotle Craving,” this gift card will definitely put a smile on any college students face.
he holidays are a time for people to share memories, time together and love for one another, specifically through gift giving. Everyone has that one In today’s world, gift cards are becoming a more and more popular item for those who are tricky to buy for, or those who seem to already have everything. Although many people believe gift cards are not personal or thoughtful presents, they truly are practical for all ages. Gift Cards are a great gift for college students. The cards give these young adults the freedom to choose what they need or what they truly want, rather then having them return unwanted gifts after the holidays. By thinking about what your loved one likes, this allows you to make the selection of the gift card personal and thoughtful. This may be quite a challenge: so here are some ideas for gift cards that offer something a little more unique:
Starbucks Coffee is almost like a food group to college students. Whether it’s used to stay up to cram for an exam, or a coffee date with friends, a Starbucks gift card is a great option. With a regular coffee costing around $2.50, a $10.00 gift card can buy four drinks!
Cinemark Woodland Mall Cinema 5 College students love being able to take a break from their studying or campus activities to relax, and what better way then with a movie night? The Cinemark in Bowling Green has very reasonable tickets, so a gift card here can go a long way, and could even work for a date night! Chipotle Almost every young adult you come across LOVES chipotle… so why not a gift card?
Public Relations Intern | Leslie Hurrell
Amazon Amazon is becoming increasingly more popular, especially among college students. You can order almost ANYTHING on Amazon, and with next day shipping! This gift card is great for college students because if they do not have a way to get to the mall or store, they can have it delivered to their front door! From books and DVD’S, to cell phones and clothing items, this website has everything. Add to that Amazon’s free shipping policies for purchases over $25, you have a great gift for the college student in your life. Visa Cash Card If you’re really having trouble deciding, the Visa card is a great option. They are as good as cash, and can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted. This is a great idea because this gift can be used at multiple different places with just one gift card! n

World Celebrates Holidays beyond Christmas Hanukkah

or many Americans, enjoying the holiday season simply means celebrating Christmas time. However, many in the U.S. and others around the world celebrate holidays throughout the year that though they may seem more uncommon to American customs, is just as important to those cultures.

Meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple after the Jews drove Syrians out from their Promised Land in 166 B.C. Following the Hebrew calendar, Hanukkah may occur in November or December. On each evening of the eight-day holiday, a candle is lit on the menorah after sundown. The ninth candle, called the shamash (which means “helper”), is used to light the others. Jews usually recite blessings and display the menorah in a window during this ritual. Other traditions include eating potatoes pancakes, known as latkes and playing with four-sided spinning tops called dreidels. Also like Christmas, some exchange gifts during Hanukkah.

Many who celebrate Kwanzaa focus on the Seven Principles, which are the following ideals: Unity, Self-determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith. On each evening of Kwanzaa, one of the seven candles on the candleholder, called the Kinara. After the lighting of each candle, a principle is discussed for that day, beginning with the black candle in the middle on the first night symbolizing Unity. Those who celebrate Kwanzaa celebrate a feast on Dec. 31 called Karamu. Gifts are also exchanged on this holiday.

Kwanzaa Translated from Swahili, meaning “first fruits,” Kwanzaa occurs between Dec. 26 and New Year’s Day. Dr. Malulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 to promote unity among the African American community after the Watts riots in Los Angeles.

Holiday Gift Guide Boxing Day Usually, Boxing Day follows Christmas Day on Dec. 26. Boxing Day may occur on Monday if Dec. 26 falls on a Sunday. Many people may notice this holiday directly after Christmas. Even fewer may know why this holiday appears on the calendar. What is the most unknown about this holiday is the origin of its name. In old times, bosses gave their servants and workers gifts in a “Christmas Box.” Today, Boxing Day is celebrated as a bank or public holiday in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Hong Kong. Boxing Day may also be considered the Black Friday of Britain, Canada and Australia. Retailers in these countries may draw the most shoppers on one single day of the year with many door buster deals and dramatic price reductions.
Ramadan As a holy month of Islam, Ramadan is for fasting, self-reflection and prayer. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islam calendar. Many followers of Islam celebrate Ramadan because it is the month when Muhammad first received revelations of what became the Quran.

Muslims who have reached puberty and are in good health fast from food and drink each day of Ramadan from dawn to dusk. During this time, followers are also to avoid smoking, partaking in sexual behavioral, thinking or speaking impure or unkind thoughts and words, and practicing immoral behavior. Many see this time of fasting to practice self-restraint and introspection. Also, many see it as a time of cleansing the soul and empathizing with those in the world who are hungry and less fortunate. Eid al-Fitr, a major feast is celebrated the day after Ramadan ends.
