It takes months to handcraft a Bentley. It takes just 3.7 seconds to hit 60 mph with the new Continental Supersports (0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds). It is powered by a potent twin-turbo W12 that offers the driving intensity of a supercar. Equipped with a new quick-shift gearbox and all-wheel drive, you can reach a top speed of 204 mph (329 km/h) in a heartbeat. Extreme performance. Extreme Bentley. But more than horsepower, this two-seater has all the refined styling you’d expect in a handcrafted Bentley. Plus, it has been developed with technology to run on gasoline or a mix of gasoline and bioethanol. As a result, you could reduce net CO2 emissions by up to 70% on a “well-to-wheel” basis (combined CO2 emissions of 388 g/km). Simply put, we couldn’t resist taking both design and performance to the extreme.

the standard package is leather, satnav, cruise control, interactive voice control, a rear parking aid, a 400W sound system with a hard disc drive and a media hub, Bluetooth and a very acceptable set of 19-inch alloys. The biggest engine seller is expected to be the V6 three-litre diesel. This is the same engine launched earlier this year in the XF. It is a great piece of engineering which will produce in the XJ 275PS of power and an average return of 40.1mpg and promises to emit only 184 of CO², which takes it to the top of its class in every aspect. launched Twiggy as ‘The Face of 1966’. The young model with a fresh, new look took the fashion world by storm and was soon being photographed across the world. The story could have ended there, but Twiggy’s talents saw her diversify and she was soon making a name for herself as an actress and singer. In 1971 Ken Russell cast her in the film version of The Boyfriend and so strong was her performance that she won two Golden Globe Awards. “That kick-started both my acting and singing careers,” she says. “Modelling was something I was lucky enough to do because I had the right look at the time, so performing live on stage was much scarier. Starring on Broadway in the awardwinning musical My One And Only in the eighties was a real highlight of my career.” Twiggy is a fan of big musical numbers and her latest album, Gotta Sing Gotta Dance, celebrates the music of the twenties, thirties and forties with a collection of songs by Noël Coward, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers. “These are songs by some of the great writers of the time,” she says. “They have an elegance and timelessness about them that makes them as witty and musically clever as they were when they were written.”
I’m at a stage in my life when I can pick and choose who I work for,” she says. “Even in the early days modelling was much less cut-throat and a lot more innocent, so I was spared all of the competitiveness that has made the industry so tough today.” Life behind closed doors, she says, is very low-key. She’s still based in London and shares her life with husband actor Leigh Lawson, immersing herself in her great loves of cooking and dress making when she has any time to spare. “I started dressmaking when I was a kid, she says. “I was fashion-mad and wanted to recreate the styles I couldn’t afford to buy. I used to make loads of things for my daughter when she

was young and I’ve been involved in several fashion ranges over the years, which I’ve loved working on. I like to get really hands-on with these rather than just be a name attached to a brand.” Surprisingly, perhaps, eating is something Twiggy clearly enjoys too. “I was lucky that when I was young I was naturally skinny so I could eat just about anything,” she says. “Twiggy was a nickname given to me by one of my brother’s friends as I was all legs, and it stuck. These days I have to watch what I eat a bit more but I love cooking for friends and family.” She still can’t quite believe she’s 60, she says with a smile. “I certainly don’t feel 60. It’s only when I look back over the old photos that I realise how much I’ve done. It’s a great privilege to still be in demand 40 years on.” Twiggy: A Life in Photographs runs until 24 March 2010 at the National Portrait Gallery in London. PAUL SMITH THE MAN BEHIND THE LABEL Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was completely accidental. At the age of 16, with no career plans or qualifications, he was propelled by his father into a menial job at the local clothing warehouse in his native Nottingham. His real passion was sport and his ambition to become a professional racing cyclist was dashed when at 17 he had a serious accident on the track. Six months in hospital followed and on the ward Paul made some new friends. After leaving hospital he arranged to meet them again and by chance the meeting place was a local pub that was popular with the students from the local art college. They talked of Mondrian, Warhol, Kokoshka, David Bailey and listened to the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and much more. It was then Paul knew he wanted to be a part of this colourful world of ideas and excitement. Within two years Paul was managing his first boutique in Nottingham and with the encouragement of his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (his now wife) and a small amount of savings he opened a tiny shop in 1970. Paul started to take evening classes for tailoring and began to create his own designs. By 1976 he showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label. Since then Paul has established himself as an important British designer. Key to his work is a sense of humour and mischief mixed with his love of tradition and the classics Today there are 12 different collections: Paul Smith Mainline for men and women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, R.Newbold (Japan only), Paul Smith Black, Paul by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Shoes, Paul Smith Fragrances, Paul Smith Watches and Paul Smith Furniture and ‘Things’. Designed in Nottingham and London, Paul Smith collections are primarily produced in England and Italy while the fabrics used are mainly of Italian, French and British origin. Paul Smith is now global with shops in 75 countries around the world. Paul continues to be an integral part of the company; he is both designer and chairman and his collections very much retain his personal touch.

The founder of Monaco-based Wally Yachts
The future of superyachting If you thought the market for high-tech mega-power boats and superyachts had become becalmed in today’s economic uncertainty, think again. While the world’s richest are scrutinising their investments of passion and their lifestyle spending more closely, as revealed by the World Wealth Report from consultancies Cap Gemini and Merrill Lynch, the reasons are more to do with public relations than cash consciousness. So says the man with the most covetable contacts book in the sailing world: Luca Bassani Antivari, the charismatic founder, president and chief executive of Wally Yachts. “All our potential clients have remained in contact with us and they have only delayed their buying decision – and more for image than for necessity,” he says. “After the financial crunch attitudes have changed – and at Wally we see this as a great opportunity, because we offer a different life on the sea: more responsible and more related to quality than to quantity.” Luca is happy to put his money where his mouth is. True to its reputation for being one step ahead of the game in yacht design and technical innovation, Wally has been quietly working on building another ground-breaking superyacht in partnership with French high-fashion house Hermès. This beauty is designed to satisfy the desire to own the next breathtaking stateof-the-art luxurious superyacht while also making a statement about the need to economise and protect the environment. “The joint brand and product developed with Hermès represent another revolution in terms of comfort, life on board and energy management based on The lounge cockpit provides maximum privacy

From October to early November, it’s possible to see shoals of dolphin and whales from the hotel’s windows, with whale-watching tours a popular day-time pursuit. Away from Plettenberg’s marine attractions, The Crags Elephant Sanctuary provides a safe haven for a herd of African elephants. The focus here is on education through interaction and as well as learning about elephant behaviour, visitors are encouraged to get up close to the animals. A highlight of our trip was our ‘trunk in hand’ elephant walk - the sheer size and power of these beautiful animals awe-inspiring. Nearby Tenikwa Wildcat and Wildlife Trust offers alternative animal encounters and its popular Wild Cat Experiences allow contact with Wild Cats, Black Footed Cats, Serval, Caracal, Cheetah and Leopard. On a Cheetah Walk, we joined Tenikwa Cheetahs on their daily meander, with the animals so relaxed it is possible to stroke their cubs.

From Plettenberg we headed on to Hermanus, a four-hour drive made all the more spectacular by the dramatic seaside landscapes and Overberg Mountains. Here we stayed at The Marine, another of Liz McGrath’s properties, perched on top of the cliffs with views across Walker Bay. The hotel has 42 individually designed bedrooms and suites and has a relaxed, modern feel. ‘Seafood’ at The Marine is informal and busy, with the emphasis on the freshness of the fish from Walker Bay. An open kitchen provides diners with a close-up view of the action. The newly refurbished Pavilion at The Marine offers edgy, glamorous dining, with stunning views across the bay. Impressive as our surroundings were, the sea was the star attraction here with June to December seeing Southern Right Whales whales emerge from beneath the waves, sending dramatic sprays across the bay. From our window, we watched them in wonder, booking in for a whale watching tour with Ivanhoe Sea Safaris the next day to get even closer to the action. From Plettenberg we headed back to Cape Town, making our final stop in Constantia where we checked in to The Cellars-Hohenort. And then there is chef-patron Atul Kochhar, a charismatic man with a touch of panache about him who obviously loves what he does – and does it with aplomb.
That same year Vatika was launched in Hampshire and a year later came the announcement that Atul’s fine food would be featuring on board P&O’s new superliner, Azura, in a signature restaurant, Sindhu. At Vatika Atul oversees the kitchen with head chef Jitin Joshi. Restaurant manager Bernine Van Schoor is in charge of front of house while sommelier Costanzo Scala looks after the wine list. Five years later Patek met the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe in Paris, where the latter presented his pioneering stem winding and setting system. By 1851 Philippe had become officially associated with the company and the Patek Philippe name became synonymous with quality and style.
These are watches renowned for their innovation and reliability, with limited manufacture, cutting-edge design and precious metals and stones adding to their desirability.
That same year, Queen Victoria was presented with a key-wound Patek Philippe pendant watch and such was her admiration for the timepiece that a second was made, which she wore suspended from a diamond and enamel brooch. Victoria’s seal of approval added to the desirability of the Patek Philippe watch and from then on monarchs, popes, political leaders and rulers were seen wearing the company’s timepieces across the world.
The Calatrava Cross The emblem of Patek Philippe, the Calatrava Cross has deep historical roots that date to the Middle Ages when in 1158 a Spanish religious order defended the Calatrava citadel against the Moors. At the end of the nineteenth century Patek Philippe adopted the emblem of the brave Spanish knights as its brand symbol – a symbol which continues to feature on Patek Philippe watches to this day. 2009 saw Mulberry shifting up a gear, with handbags featuring statement detailing, clutches catering for party girls and colours bold and fresh. This season, once again, the look is edgy, with the ready-to-wear collection including shrunken leather biker jackets, skinny jeans and plunging backless dresses. Colours are bold and beautiful, with burnt orange, ginger tan, cobalt and midnight inky blue and electric purple featuring widely. Handbags and accessories are similarly statement-making. The new Daria range – poised to become an iconic classic – of a clutch, satchel, tote and hobo features ironic hardware and a high-shine finish with a cutaway logo. Colours include the new neutral mouse grey as well as burnt orange, rouge noir and vibrant cerise. The Bayswater family expands to include both the Oversized Bayswater Clutch, the new East/West Bayswater and the classic Bayswater, in a variety of fabulous new seasonal colours and leathers, including a super-glossy baby hair calf in rouge noir and electric cerise, and to-die-for emerald giant croc print suede velour and smudged leopard patent. The Angelina Shopper and Convertible Shoulder Bag are also key to the season: versatile styles in glossy polished saturated bright leather with a vintage padlock with enamel detailing. Classic Mabel, Shoulder Bag and Hobo styles are joined by two gorgeous new luggage pieces: the super-size Mabel Zip Tote, the Mabel Holdall and the Mabel Garment Bag. New to the Roxanne family is the everyday must-have, the slouchy across-body Roxanne Satchel. Take five… with Mulberry creative director Emma Hill One: What sort of woman do you have in mind when designing for Mulberry? A woman with traditional English roots but with an international polish: someone who is humorous yet stylish, creative yet inclusive, and very much an individual. Two: What inspires you when creating the next collection? The world around me, colour and print, my fashion-obsessed son, my friends and family, a film, a photograph, a painting or even an illustration that attracts my attention.
About Mulberry Inspired by the cool of the city and the craft of the countryside, Mulberry has always represented a peculiar British juxtaposition. Mulberry was established in 1971 with modest roots in Somerset, and on the shelves of the London fashion emporium Biba it quickly grew to become synonymous with le style anglais. At the time, favourites from Mulberry included the leather agenda and poacher bag – musthaves of their time. Our Hampshire Grand Design Cheryl Robson and Alex Reay left the London rat race in 2000 to lovingly restore a medieval thatched cottage in Ibsley. Just days before their first child was due, the house burned down and the couple lost everything: their insurance policy had lapsed some months before. Amazingly they decided to build again. The second time round they took the opportunity to transform the cottage into a spectacular five-bedroom modern home with large contemporary windows and a brand new thatched roof, and signed up for the help of Grand Designs. How did you get in touch with the programme and how did that lead to you appearing? We filled out a form on the Channel 4 website and a week later we were asked to do a camera test. A week after that Kevin was down in The New Forest advising us on the cottage. Did you have previous house building experience? I have always been handy, as my father worked for Peabody Housing Trust for 27 years, but our home was my first professional project. How much help did you get from Kevin and how much did he influence your decisions? Appearing on the programme gave everyone involved in the build a lift. Some were sceptical about the help we would receive but Kevin was great support and most importantly had a good rapport with our team, so he was great for bouncing ideas off. How much did the build cost you? £330,000. How long did it take to complete? The cottage went up in flames on 14 September 2004 and we moved in just over two years later. What is the completed build like? Expansive, a lovely mix of old and new, with a mix of contemporary and classic furniture. What is the most satisfying part of the process? Every day we get something new from the house and it’s very much an ongoing project. I think watching our daughter grow up in such a lovely area in a home which we all love is hugely satisfying. Your experience set you off on a new career path. Tell us about that. Having experienced at first hand the devastating effects of a faulty chimney flue in a thatched house, I set up Forest Flues and Fires (www.forestfluesandfires.com) in 2008 to offer high-quality chimney flue systems and wood-burning stove installations. The most common cause of thatch fires is a faulty chimney system, with metal liners splitting and corroding over time, and our company offers top-quality workmanship and maintenance, ensuring the safety and ultimately the conservation of thatched homes. What is Thatch Alert? It’s Hampshire Fire and Rescue’s awareness programme which will eventually be rolled out all over the UK and builds awareness of how to minimize fires in thatched properties. It’s essential that houses with wood-burning stoves have their chimneys properly lined. The UK loses 70 thatched houses a year to fire and like the Fire and Rescue Cheryl Robson and Alex Ready lovingly restored their medieval thatched cottage
Service, my company is dedicated to preserving these beautiful properties for generations to come.

DREAM DESIGN CREATIVE DIRECTOR ANDREW RIZZA REVEALS WHY OPENPLAN LIVING IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN CREATING SPACE

open-plan is transforming the way we live, not only in commercial settings but also within the home. “Combining living, dining and cooking spaces has never been more
popular,” says Andrew Rizza, creative director at Dream Design. “Interacting over food, both in the preparation and eating, has become the norm, and whereas once the kitchen was kept firmly behind closed doors, today’s home owners want it to play an increasingly social role.” So much so, in fact, that combining a kitchen with a living and dining space is now de rigueur among house builders. It’s rare to see a new build with a door between the kitchen and dining area, and even rarer to see a worktop that doesn’t look out over a social area. “But it’s not just new homes that are benefiting from this use of space,” says Andrew. “We regularly transform living spaces in traditional, older properties to work more effectively. Open-plan living adds light and fluidity and can transform the way that the people inside a property live and work. Best of all, there is no wasted space.” Andrew’s schemes take into account the social dynamics of the household, the outlook from the windows or scope for an outlook and even the timetable of the household – all of which, he says, are essential considerations.

MARINE MASTERPIECES
WITH A ROYAL CONNECTION ANNE HAMPSON SHOWCASES THE WORK OF BEKEN
T
he Beken family’s four generations of photographers, working out of the Isle of Wight since the 1880s, have earned a legion of fans worldwide.
You don’t have to be an expert sailor to appreciate Beken’s
classic historical monochrome photographs as well as the company’s breathtaking colour images of today’s superior racing and cruising craft. Loyal Beken followers include the Duke of Edinburgh, who has awarded the company a Royal Warrant, as did King George V and Queen Victoria before him. Today the fourth in the Beken family line of photographers, Kenneth, is at the helm, sharing the workload with Peter Mumford, a qualified yachtmaster, ex-commercial diver, Baltic Exchange shipbroker and photographer, who joined the company in 1992. Together this dynamic photographic team have recently steered the company through a seismic move away from working with the film-based cameras of old to the latest digital photography. It was a poignant moment for Kenneth. From an early age he had helped his father on the water and in the darkrooms, learning everything he knows about marine photography the oldfashioned way. “I learned to spot when a yacht was sailing at its best and when it was not so photogenic, and the art of hand-printing from large glass plate negatives, as well as working with more modern cameras,” recalls Kenneth. “But now that digital cameras and printers are as good as the traditional darkroom methods the company has gone totally digital.” While the back end of the business may have become easier to manage, it is no less a challenge today to photograph on the water than it was when the company first started. Capturing today’s craft in full glorious flight is no mean feat, as Kenneth explains. “You have to be afloat and you have to be in the thick of it to get the best results,” he says. “Sailors recognise the Beken name and allow us to get in amongst a fleet of charging yachts without complaint.” It’s no easy task. “There are literally hundreds of people calling themselves marine photographers, but to sell any of your results you have to be better than the rest and that only comes from experience.” Beken has been consistently better for well over a century, as its fascinating archive of close on half a million photographs dating
back to 1888, not to mention royal customers, attests. The secret of the company’s longevity is down to the Beken family’s genuine love of – and respect for – marine craft, as much as to their skill in operating a camera. “Yachts are wonderful subjects to photograph,” enthuses Kenneth. “Each is loved and cherished by its owner and we have learned to reflect that devotion by getting the very best from our subject. My grandfather said that a yacht should be photographed like a lady: ‘never showing wrinkles and always at her best’!” The Beken duo use 16.7-million-pixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II cameras to create the hair-splitting, super-fine detail of 50Mb files. Kenneth and Peter have years of experience in expertly manoeuvering their two identical 40-knot Boston Whalers to exactly the right spot on the water to achieve the most favourable angle for the subject. They can be seen in all weathers in the Solent area, adding over 50,000 new images to the Beken collection every year. “I’ve photographed all over the world but prefer the Solent waters, as the weather is ever-changing and the light is not too harsh but borders on the soft and gentle,” says Kenneth. The demanding offshore waters of the Channel and The Solent are happy hunting grounds for the Beken duo, as sailors from all over the world are drawn to the area and the sea is always busy with boats. Home-grown talent includes the record-breaking

when the world’s most famous yachting regatta and social whirlwind, Cowes Week, comes to town – a very busy time indeed for Beken. Kenneth is confident about the future of Beken, regardless of the wider world’s choppy financial waters. The company is busier than it’s ever been.
A Beken family snapshot In 1888 Alfred Beken (1855-1915), chemist and photographer, moved to the Isle of Wight and opened a pharmacy in Cowes. His son Frank (1880-1970) was so impressed by the sight of the grand yachts sailing past his bedroom window that he decided to photograph them. However, the cameras available at the time were not made to be used in rough seas, so Frank designed and had built a new style of camera – one that was fired by biting a rubber ball held between his teeth! Frank’s bedroom window provided the light source for his solarpowered enlarger, which enabled him to make saleable prints from his negatives. The Beken pharmacy began selling these photographs

alongside its medicines and perfumes and soon attracted royal interest from Queen Victoria, who stayed nearby at her palace by the sea, Osborne House. On one occasion it was recorded that five crowned heads of Europe visited the pharmacy together. Today Frank’s early photographs have fetched over £1,000 at London auctions. Frank’s son, Keith (1914-2007), joined his father in the 1930s. He started colour photography in the 1950s and travelled the world capturing the birth of modern ocean racing on film. On Frank’s death in 1970 the pharmacy was closed and Beken became a photographic business. Keith’s son, Kenneth (born 1951), joined the renamed company Beken of Cowes.

While anyone can learn the logistics of powerboat racing, the physical demands of the sport add to the pressure, Shelley says. “The impact of the boat on the water is very gruelling and I train intensively through the year to up my core strength. Men are built to bear weight and impact whereas women have to work hard to achieve that.” In 2003 her confidence was shattered when her boat hit a freak wave and was smashed to pieces, leaving her trapped inside it. “I spent three long minutes underwater on a personal air tank before I was rescued,” she says. “The accident left me physically unharmed, but mentally I had to build myself up again. However competent a driver you are, the sheer power of the sea makes this a dangerous sport at times.” As well as training three times a week in the gym and during the season on the water wherever possible, Shelley owns and runs Brides of Southampton, swapping her overalls for much more feminine attire. “Powerboating has always been seen as the sport of the wealthy and as such does not attract the kinds of sponsorship that sailing enjoys,” she says. “That means that everyone involved with the sport needs to earn an independent living, and sponsorship is vital. An average year’s costs run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.” Powerboating prize money is a fraction of that offered in sailing too, with her grand prix win seeing the team net just 7,000 euros. “The prize money probably just about covered the weekend costs,” Shelley says. “You’d never be part of the sport for the financial incentives.” Whilst money is always tight, motivation it seems is freerunning, with Shelley’s enthusiasm and drive making her a much sought-after after-dinner speaker and a Southampton ambassador. In 2008 she was invited to start Southampton’s Olympic flag relay on the water, celebrating the handover from Bejing to London as part of the city’s celebrations. “Southampton remains my home and the water which I know the best,” she says. “I’m proud and delighted to represent the city as an ambassador.” Shelley’s passion for her sport has seen her in demand for some of the best teams in the world, yet closer to home it was her team mechanic, Trevor Leigh, who secured her heart and the two were married at Wimborne Minster in November. “At the beginning, friends joked that I was only with Trevor because he could fix my boats, but I’ve known him for many years and our romance blossomed very slowly,” Shelley says. “Trevor is a great leveller for me, because I’m someone whose adrenalin is always pumping – both on the water and off!” Shelley’s boundless energy has been as much a part of her success as her abilities on the water. She may not be a world champion quite yet, but this local lady is certainly a force to be reckoned with.

Nanyuki has a fantastic climate for many of the essential oils and plant extracts we use, such as eucalyptus, vetiver and chamomile, which can all be grown in the lush and fertile foothills of Mount Kenya.” Kenya has won a place in Liz’s heart and she now has a home there. “I love being part of the extraordinary natural environment there,” she says. “We have wild flamingos, hippos and giraffe in our garden and it’s a country I have fallen in love with.” Nearer to home, Liz says that nothing beats the Isle of Wight on a sunny day. “I love to walk along the beachfront between Ryde and Seaview. man-made or synthetic materials used is much more sophisticated. In the UK, dermal fillers typically consist of collagen or hyaluronic acid gels. Results can be seen immediately and the filler is gradually broken down by the body after six to 12 months when the skin gradually returns to its pre-treatment look. Medical peels, also known as chemical peels, were first used to achieve youthfulness by the ancient Egyptians, who used sour milk or fermented grape skins. What they didn’t realise was that they were benefiting from the light skin peeling effects of a family of chemicals called hydroxy acids. Today, scientists have identified many safe forms of acid, which can be used to induce collagen stimulation within the skin. Superficial and medium-depth peels work by gently exfoliating (or lifting off) the upper layer of the skin, encouraging rejuvenation for a fresher, younger-looking appearance. They also help to reduce fine lines, open pores, pigmentation and freckles. Superficial peels are typically carried out as a course and take about 30 minutes, needing virtually no recovery time and no anaesthetic, while mediumdepth peels go deeper into the skin for a faster and more dramatic result. They are effective for photo-ageing, acne, smoothing of acne scars, melasma, chloasma, keratosis and fine lines. Sculptra is a collagen-stimulator that works to build up the body’s own natural collagen to help gradually smooth lines and wrinkles and restore facial volume, giving a younger-looking complexion. Results are natural and gradual and can last up to two years and the beauty of Sculptra is that it is not a gel but the result is achieved by your own collagen-making cells.

location. “We’re always on the look-out for character homes and those with plenty of space,” says Hannah. “I recently had a call for a cottage for Nanny McPhee which we’re looking for now. “While the chance to have your home appear in the next big blockbuster sounds too good to miss, it can also be hard work. Often it will mean large numbers of people through the front door,” she explains. “There aren’t many kitchens, for example, that can accommodate a crew of six plus actors if a kitchen scene is crucial to the plot.” Around one in ten of the requests Hannah receives goes on to become a working project, with many of the queries which come into the office requiring extensive research. “I had a request from Ginsters for a stone bridge over a canal for a pasty advert they were making and worked with the Basingstoke Canal Authority to track down something suitable, which meant seeing a lot of bridges,” she says. “We recently had a call from a production company wanting an independent rundown garage for an advertisement for Tesco, and again this took a bit of finding but we came up with a location in the end which went on to be featured.” While Hannah admits her job isn’t all red carpets and mixing with the stars, getting the chance to see so many of the country’s hidden gems adds to the fun of it. “I still get a buzz from seeing somewhere in Hampshire that I have found appearing on television or in a film – even if it’s just for a few seconds,” she says. “Little does the viewing public know the work that has been put in behind the scenes!” For more information about Film Hampshire and to list your home on the location database, visit www.filmhampshire.org.uk

years the Gladiolus was thought to be a great rarity, with just a handful of sites in the deepest parts of the Forest. It was not until the 1960s that a thorough search of the Forest revealed the plants at over 60 locations scattered across what is now the National Park. The flowers are elusive; each year only about three percent of the plants come into bloom, brightening up the bracken for a few brief days in early summer. The Forest is a large and wonderful place and new species are still waiting to be discovered. One of the most exciting finds of recent decades was that of Early Gentian by Paul Bowman; he discovered it growing amongst the heaths north of the Forest. This unique and native British gentian is found nowhere else in the world. As a diligent map maker Paul took detailed notes of all the plants he found. His sketches showed the Early Gentian growing
