MASTERS IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE LOCAL ENGAGEMENT
Making multicultural places. Master thesis Mentors: Ir. G.A. Verschuure-Stuip Dr. A. Romein
01 MAKING MULTICULTURAL PLACES Brussels, Belgium Master thesis ‘17
Shakespeare famously wrote “What is the city but its people”. The people of the city make the city what it is. The cities of today are much like a patchwork quilt, with different cultures and people coming together to share space. Diversity defines the social fabric of many large cities of today. Many of these cities face large problems due to social inequality. In an era of social protests that are bringing inequality back into the national discussion, its time to reassess the practices that have perpetuated these problems – and how we fix them. This graduation project is an attempt to understand how a human dimension to Landscape Architecture can become a tool to invent spaces for our future cities and to design spaces of inclusion.

URBAN REDESIGN
Vanniyarpet Market
Fifth year, Semester 1 Mentors: Prof. Kamalakannan TR
04 VANNIYARPET MARKET Urban Re-design
Chennai, Tamilnadu, India
Vanniyarpet market or Washermanpet market is a traditional sandai or market in Chennai, India.Traditional markets are losing their relevance in todays world with the growth of chain retail shops and supermarkets. Markets such as the Washermanpet market are a part of our history and are a source of income for many families. Revival of these traditional markets will uplift the livelihood of local shop vendors in addition to contributing to the growth of the surrounding urban scape by retaining a space that locals identify with. The re-planning of the market has been evolved around the establishment of 2 axis lending a sense of direction to the market. A major consideration in the planning process was to provide for evident physical seperation between the vegetarian and meat sections keeping in mind the sensitivities of the users. The peripheral structure of the market has been constructed as a G+1 structure to accommodate for the shops encroaching the streets surrounding the market and to account for future expansion. The design opens itself out to the users creating a relationship between the users and the structure itself. The central open space serves as an interaction area for the users as well as for the people who own shops within the market

PLACEMAKING
SCHALKWIJK CENTRUM
Placemaking Plus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
06 SCHALKWIJK CENTRUM Haarlem, The Netherlands
After many successful years a lot of major shopping centers are facing difficult times at the moment. Their shopping concept no longer meets the needs of today. Shopping is more than ever a recreational activity and therefore should be very pleasurable. Declining amount of visitors worsen thie situation even more as these places loose their function of a social meeting - with less visitors, more shops become vacant spinning the shopping center into a downward spiral. To turn this process around Placemaking plus started work on this shopping center and a placemaking project was initiated.
