Thesis Design
Project: Housing as an Urban Insert Location: AIIMS Campus, New Delhi Site Area: 1,13,411 sqm FAR: 3
Context Plan
The proposition of this thesis to create a housing typology that responds to its urban context and the urban realm within, while creating a safe and comfortable environment for its residents. The aim is also to develop a cohesive built form by re-mediating the pluralities and contradictions of a publicprivate complex. The main objectives of the design were:
Redevelopment of West Ansari Nagar is primarily a residential redevelopment. But due to its proximity to large government hospitals like AIIMS and Safdarjung, the project is an urban insert in a dense and highly active public sphere. Thus the project brief aligns itself with the aim and objectives of the thesis.
Challenges while designing the units were:
• To appropriate a function for the 10% commercial built up area to make the project self-sustaining, with no extra burden on the state exchequer.
• To create simple layouts that would fit into a 9m x 13.5m module and to localise the toilets and kitchen in one bay to combine all the sunken slabs.
• To negotiate the pluralities of responding to the public realm while creating a comfortable and safe community for the residents of the housing society.
• To allow separate access points for the main gate and the staff quarter while ensuring a lateral access for the staff through the utility balcony and the kitchen.
• To segregate public/ semi-public/ private functions while retaining easy accessibility for different users groups and diverse functions.
• To create a physical barrier between the public corridor and the private entrance veranda without creating any visual barriers.
• To create a cohesive built form that integrates the different components of the area program.
• To zone the living room and the terrace in such a way that they remain closely associated in both configuration to create double height private terraces.

area distribution
The commercial and the rest house builtup has been zoned along the Aurobino Marg to activate the edge. A 3-star hotel along with retail has been proposed as the 10% commercial componenet. Social infrastructure consisting of the club house primary school, creche, sport facilities, commnity shopping and guest house has been zoned under the housing as it activates the open spaces during day-time. The central green has been retained with no basement under it to preserve the existing trees. Periphrial road network provides vehicular access to each core.

04 form development
This green field TOD project located in sector 24, Rohini, was proposed to act as a catalyst for the development of the area. The presence of a proposed metro station in close proximity ensured urban connectivity, mobility and integration with the rest of New Delhi. The project involved the design of: • Commercial areas ( office + retail + hotel + convention hall) • Residential area (MIG + HIG) • Social Inrastructure • Affordable Housing
60% 30% 10% 15%
The main concept of the scheme was to integrate the varying components of the area program while maintaining an integrated built form.
The vehicular movement has been restricted to the periphery to ensure a safe, vibrant, comfortable urban “place”. Commercial has been zoned along the edges while housing forms the core of the site thereby encouraging round-the clock active streets and incidental places to relax. There is a public spine that connects the major edges of the triangular site. The district park, a part of the mandatory green, has been zoned in a corner so that it may serve the larger city population. A smaller green caters to the existing informal settlements as well as the affordable housing.

hotel DESIGN
Project: Destination Wedding Luxury Resort Location: Agra Site Area: 25,862 sqm FAR: 1
SITE PLAN
SITE SECTION
The project involved the design of a Destination wedding luxury resort with 120 guest rooms and a 1200 seater banquet hall along with two restaurants, a bar, a spa and a shopping complex on a site located in the city of Agra, 2 km away from the Taj Mahal, aerially. The major learnings during this semester involved the design of: - Front and Back of the House areas, - Six types of guest rooms and suites - Visitor, guest and staff movement patterns.
The design uses the levels on site to zone the banquet hall traffic along with the BOH on the lower ground floor with a separate dropoff and landscaped courts that allow light and ventilation in the BOH areas. The hexagonal entrance court acts as a node where the guest, banquets and management traffic intersect. The design utilises the dip in the level in the west to accommodate the spa and health club facilities. The service floor under each wing is connected by a narrow corridor making the guest lobby a double height space.

Section
core detail
The project involved designing an office complex for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The proposal was expected to be a net-zero energy built. Through the course of the semester the major emphasis was laid on:
There is a peripheral road network and the ramp entrances into the basement have been zoned as close to the site entry as possible, to ensure quick dispersal of vehicles from the site.
• Understanding how the structural system for a multistory building works,
The walls facing east and north-east have been provided with modular green walls. The walls enclosing the courts have windows with glass louvers to cut down on the sun without restricting the views. They also have planters that run along their length which enable shading and also create a buffer. The corridor itself has narrow ribbon windows to restrict heat ingress.
• Designing functional cores for an office building, • Resolving basement plan, parking layout and ramps, and • Incorporating green building practices in the design. The site was aligned along the NS axis with the long edges facing east and west. Thus the building consists of two C-shaped blocks connected by an enclosed corridor. The east facing courtyards improve natural lighting in the office interiors.
28
The building cores have been located on the west and south west facade. The west and south-west facades have minimum fenestrations and the opening -on the core walls are covered by a jali to filter light entering the blocks. Photo-voltaic panels have been integrated into the facade with recessed windows protected by horizontal louvers.

Folly DESIGN
Project: Folly based on Serendipity Location: Imaginary Site Area: 35m x 35m
plan
LONGITUDINAL SECTION
The aim of the project was to design a folly representing an emotion on an imaginary site of choice 35m x 35m in dimension.
Low height of the ceiling, gradually increases and creates a sense of enclosure despite numerous openings.
The built grows gradually in sync with surroundings. The semi-open spaces in the ceiling represent the ups and downs in life that must be accepted with equanimity. In harmony with the nature, the structure covered with vines which connect the built with the ground. The gradually decreasing ground level enters into the water and enhances the sensory experience.
The walls are made of stone and cut out the noise from outside and water creates reflections as well as white noise. The entire built has a minimalistic footprint on the ground, despite being a massive structure. The folly is imagined to be located in a rocky and cold region with low foliage and at the edge of a pond.

Museum DESIGN
Project: Philatelic Museum Location: GPO, New Delhi
site plan
The project aimed to intervene in the existing Gol Dak Khana complex in New Delhi and design a Philatelic Museum that would be used to showcase stamp and coin collections. The project was proceeded by a detailed group based study of the different architectural and planning aspects of the GPO. Based upon the cumulative learnings of this group work, students were encouraged to explore the different forms possible. The GPO is a very inward looking structure wherein the experience of the user completely changes upon entering it.
This design chooses to break the circular form as well as this characteristic of the existing structure. It stands sharp against the soft geometry of the GPO and announces its date and place. The cafe is a semi open space which invites people in and makes the building more permeable. The visitor enters the reception from where a stepped gallery gradually ascends to the first floor. It creates a floating snake like structure that wraps around an OAT in the middle. Horizontal strip windows have been provided in the gallery areas.
