TRIMET TRANSIT ANALYSIS, PORTLAND BHAVYASHREE K IYER ESSM 652 | Texas A&M University
This project aims at spatially analyzing the Trimet’s transit stops accessibility in Portland, Oregon. Some of the factors to analyze are: • Connectivity distance, bus frequency and active transportation availability • Linking transit station with land use zoning for possible transit oriented approach - multi-dwelling unit, mixed-use zoning, mixed and commercial employment • Linking American Community Services Data (ACS)- median income and population to identify study area to provide equity in terms of transit accessibility

METHODOLOGY
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
To determine suitable area for study, 4 factors are used: zoning, business districts, population and median income of block group. Each of the factors are converted to raster and reclassified. Zoning map is reclassified to have mixed use development, central and mixed employment, multi-unit dwellings and central residential as Portland’s master plan focuses on transit oriented development. Weights are assigned to the 4 factors in Raster Calculator to identify the suitable areas. The weights to factors are assigned in the following order: Zoning, Median Income, Population and Business Districts. Euclidean distance is used to calculate the distance to transit bus stops in Midway and check the accessibility to the suitable land identified.
Midway Business District has more population and less median income in Portland. Increasing service frequency and accessibility is more important in order to reduce the travel cost burden and increase ridership. The more frequent serviced bus stops and active bike network are studied in this district to understand the accessibility distance.
From the suitability analysis it can be observed that the factors mentioned above are precisely where the Trimet network passes through.

VEHICLE VOLUME COUNT
The ideal walking distance to a bus stop preferred is 0.25 miles. It can be seen from the maps below that the frequently served bus stops does not provide ideal access to a portion of area. Also the Powell Butte Nature Park is served by only one bus route and the SE 136 avenue aligned north south has been designated a difficult connection for bikes due to the traffic volume. Hence, proposing increased services in the existing bus stop is an ideal solution to increase and encourage transit ridership in Midway Business District. Bus stops and bike parking docks
