Mapping Of Slums

Thesis Statement : Investigate the Mithi River,Mumbai,India, Focusing on improving the adjacent land use, and symptomatic conditions affecting the river, by analysing and studying past, present, and future possibilities, resulting in fresh water flow, improved public spaces, access to the river, pollution control and organized land use. The city has a population of approximate 20 million people housed in area of 603 sq/km, with an average density of 39,300 per sq/km. Slums houses 43% of city’s population in just 60 sq/km with average density of 200,000 per sq/km. The river Mithi which used to be fresh flowing source of water is now turned to a, sewer canal, which further reasons to flood, and hygine issues. 7% of Mumbai population, faces Diarrohea. 89% of deaths in Slums is caused due to respiratory disease followed by digestive disease which amounts to 46% AIM: To study the cause of problems resulting in the river to turn sewage and giving solutions by treating the ecology of the river , and planning adjacent land use to celebrate the river and making it an important asset to the city.

M.Urban Design // Infill Design At The Bluff. It is a Design Project based in Savannah at the Infill site where the bluff is created between the Bay Street And the River Street Four proposal have been given to improve the existing conditions at the Factors walk, Emmet Park and Bay Street. The main Design proposal was to create an Urban inset for the Neighbourhood and Tourist the building typology has to be decided by self where I decided to create community and uplifment centre to create opportunities for people, Commercial offices and Restaurants for Income generation, Savannah having a beautiful River front lacked a Pier so a Pier was proposed as the part of building extending from Emmet Park to the River Street which acts as a new viewing gallery.

Building Proposal + Infill Proposal 1)Public use of space and connecting Emmet park to the river with the help of bluff Pier has been created to the river from the Emmet park (Bay Street to River Street).

Santacruz Island: Land use, Urbanization, Infrastructure

PLAYA PENINSULA

Santa Cruz Island is one of the Galapagos Islands with an area of 986 km.sq and a maximum altitude of 864 metres situated in the center of the archipelago, Santacruz is the second largest island after Isabela. Its capital is Puerto Ayora, the most populated urban centre in the islands. On Santacruz there are some small villages, whose inhabitants work in agriculture and cattle raising. The island is a large dormant volcano. It is estimated that the last eruptions occured around a million and a half years ago. Santa Cruz hosts the largest human population in the archipelago at the town of Puerto Ayora, with a total of 12,000 residents. Tortuga Bay is located on the Santa Cruz Island, a short walk from center of Puerto Ayora where Marine Iguanas, birds, crabs and a natural mangrove where you can spot white reef sharks and the gigantic galapagos tortoise.

Santacruz Island : Infrastructure for Tourism And Conservation Santacruz Island holds the highest population in the Archipelago. Inorder to increase torurism with keeping Conservation of the Island into Considerations certain proposals are suggested. One of the most important consideration is to protect the Marine Life and the endangered species such as Marine Iguana, Sea Turtules. To conserve the endangered species one of the intervention is to create an elevated trail which would reduce the physical connection of species with humans but will still maintain a visual connection. Elevated trails throughtout the island would also encourage hiking on the island which would increase the average stay duration of people on the island. Loop of ground trails are created for people to access the hot spot areas on the island which would also add to hiking. Intoduction of tourist activities such as Kayaking is proposed which would also be one of the major factors to increase stay duration of people on the island. Water taxi for internal islands proosed to increase the tourism for people who do not prefer hiking or ground trails. Mirador proposed at certain elevations which will be the rest points along the ground trail and encourage people to admire the beauty of the island from different levels. Lagoons created at the end of the fresh water streams at different locations which will be connected with the cassacade canal trail which would also be helpful for irrigation of agriculture and increase in migration of birds. Bike lanes and pedestrian lanes added along the cassacade trail to encourge people to view the interior of island. First aid facility, Tourist Information kiosks, rest areas, dining pavillions and restrooms are the basic facilities provided at the hot spot areas to encourage tourism. Landings provided at some major hot spot area for the incoming and outgoing of the water taxi.

Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island): Green Infrastructure At Town Scale After the proposals at the Island scale I continued the same concept of Tourism and Infrastructure at the Town Scale. Puerto Ayora (Port Ayora) is the highest Urbanised city in the Archipelagos where most of the human population is found. It is also one of the most polluted city in the Archipelago as most of the tourist intervention on tourist foot print is at Port Ayora. The buildings in the city are planned or placed in a dense manner not many or equal green spaces in each block which is one of the major reasons for increase in Carbon Footprint. My proposals at the policy level for new urban areas to be designed on any specific Island is to provide minimum 30-40% of green space in each block as it is one of the main factors for conservation of species and town aswell. In the Urban Expansion zone as marked in the zoning and grids laid out accordingly where not much construction has taken place I have proposed green bands between two construction bands as marked in the drawing. We can see the elevated trail path and facilities proposed at the Island scale, projecting it on the town scale. The connection networ of high urbanised area with the Urban expansion area can bee seen on the map. Amount of green spaces and connections of green spaces are also visible in the map. Between the Urbanized zone and Expansion zone the area is used as the Recreational zone where the mass is sparsely proposed. In order to maintain the conservation aspect other 2 proposals that can be seen is the buffer are after the urbanized and urban expansion area. Green Corriodor is being planned phase wise as per the hierarchy of the road this also increases the migration of birds. The concept of green bands and Green Corridor is used to reduce the physical contact between the species and humans thus by mainting visual connection. Facilities provided has been marked on the map. Plan oblique and sections showing the proposed view of the city.

Interaction Initiation

Housing // Interactive Institutional Housing India is a country all about interaction and meeting each other. If people are sitting on bus on long journey they would just start interacting and knowing each other. AIM: To design a housing for the faculties and students of the dental college. SITE: Sumandeep university, Baroda REQUIREMENT: The units requirement was of 250 units. The housing was to be done for 1. Students 2. Faculty 3. H.O.D CONCEPT: The base of concept was to create housing spaces such that it encourages interaction and and creates more spaces for it. The focus was on creating open teraaces which would act as meeting points. A clear division was thought for master planning the housing units. A clear demarcation would help much better for the privacy of students, faculty and H.O.D.

rial vehicular movement and parking. The peripherial vehicular parking was done in order to have a clean tension free central core so that the students can enjoy their freedom of playing in the ground and wouldnt aprpreciate any hinderance in privacy from one another. Hence the housing was devided from the axis with faculty housing at the axis creating a centre line and the other two housing forming the other two halves of the master plan.

Student Housing STUDENT HOUSING : The main thought process after designing the student housing was giving various interactive spaces for the students. The increase in the height of building along its length is given to add a feeling of adventure for students becasue they are young and love to take on challenges. The staggered terraces can act as isolation space for the inside of the rooms. Small courtyards have been made inside the rooms where students can easily interacte with each other. Also interaction takes place sideways inbetween various rooms.

The layout on the RIGHT shows placement of each plan on top of another. Thus the arrengment creates various verical courtyards that creates communication among students. Cross Section

FACULTY HOUSING: Faculty housing is based more upon the commmon spaces between the units where housewives or children can perform certain activites. The voids in between the houses would act as conversational space where families can carry out their household chores like vegetable cutting, knitting etc. Thus the voids have been arragned in organic way . Not only the houses are staggering in side ways but are also staggering back and forth cretaing open terraces. Thus tranfer of load takes plans towards the ground from the non staggered blocks.

AIM: To Redesign and Revitalize the present condition of one of the religious pilgrimage in India which has lakhs of people visiting in a year. Present condition of site was of unďŹ nished ghats because of which many people fall. To improve those conditions with urban design and landscape design was the focus. SITE: The site was taken as Chanod, Gujarat in India where around lakhs of religious followers visit to perform last rituals of person. The site sits on the bank of two holy and sacred rivers of India Narmada and Orsang. It creates flood situation during monsoon and landsilting takes place thorugh out the year which make it inconvinient for the visitors to perom rituals as the topography, contours are not treated in a proper manner, along with that one more challenge was to regenerate the income for local people .

Concept And Process For Design The master planning was done is such a way that the site got divided into two parts : 1.Land zone 2. Flood/River zone The concept follows the axial planning where the central axis was drawed then options were created for the zoning and massing out of which the ďŹ nal zoning was decide the steps at the river front were decided by considering high water level and low water level and the charecteristics of stepwell were added accodinlgy, then massing for various activities were planned considering the zoning and the topography. Central axis was converted to the commercial zone where people can sell the products required for the rituals to be performed.
