NOW OPEN FIST THEATRE COMPANY: “THE SOLDIER DREAMS” AND “NEVER SWIM ALONE” “THE SOLDIER DREAMS”: 8:30 P.M. SATURDAYS; 7 P.M. SUNDAYS “NEVER SWIM ALONE”: 10 P.M. SATURDAYS; 6 P.M. SUNDAYS Canadian playwright David Maclvor’s “The Soldier Dreams” and “Never Swim Alone” will be presented by Open Fist Theatre Company. At the Atwater Village Theatre, the west coast premiere of “The Soldier Dreams” runs from now until Dec. 12. “Never Swim Alone” will run as a companion piece from now through Nov. 21, so guests can experience both plays in one day. Open Fist associate artistic director Amanda Weier directs both plays. NOW ROOFTOP CINEMA CLUB: SPOOKY OCTOBER PROGRAMMING Rooftop Cinema “SIN-ema” Club debuts “spook-tacular” October programming, featuring Halloween fi lms, at all Los Angeles locations. Events at the DriveUp at Santa Monica Airport will include axe-throwing and an infl atable bounce house every Saturday. At Rooftop Cinema Club El Segundo, there will be live DJ sets, pre-fi lm trivia Thursdays, batting cages and rooftop yoga on Saturdays; the fi nal screening at this venue will be on Oct. 31. Rooftop Cinema Club DTLA will host late night screenings. Kidspace Children’s Museum presents a Halloween parade, where costumes are encouraged, and guests are invited to march, dance and strut the orange catwalk. The event also includes pumpkin decorating, silly story times and up-close visits with hairy-not-scary spider friends. Guests can embrace their creativity by making masks, costumes and accessories out of cardboard in Ye Olde Costume Shoppe. On Oct. 30 and 31, Bob Baker Marionette Theater will present HaLLoWe'eN SpoOkTaCuLaR!, a puppet show featuring Dracula and Vampira, the Invisible Man, the infamous Black Cat and Grumpy Pumpkin. Access to Kidspace exhibitions and outdoor spaces as well as all Halloween activities are included with general admission, which is $14.95 for adults and children over the age of 1. OCT. 29 CALIFORNIA SCIENCE CENTER AND CHILDREN’S BURN FOUNDATION: “FIRE! SCIENCE & SAFETY” “Fire! Science & Safety” opens at the California Science Center on Oct. 29 in collaboration with Children’s Burn Foundation. The exhibit is designed to help guests comprehend the risks of fi re in homes, shows the simple changes that they can make to avoid the dangers, and details how to respond if a fi re ignites. Set in a typical Los Angeles home, “Fire! Science & Safety” presents a training site for young “fi re danger detectives.” The exhibit features hands-on activities to help guests understand home fi res as well as wildfi res. https://californiasciencecenter.org/ exhibits/fi re-science-safety OCT. 29 – 30 EL CAPITAN THEATRE: “THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS” 9:55 P.M. Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” returns to El Capitan Theatre in 3D. Guests can enjoy an Oogie Boogie photo op from the fi lm before and after the show. Health and safety measures are being taken at the theatre. OCT. 30 HAUNTED LITTLE TOKYO 2-5 P.M. AND 7 P.M.-12 A.M. The fi fth annual Haunted Little Tokyo returns to Downtown Los Angeles. The event is a fun-fi lled Halloween celebration, including three events for guests of all ages. The event features a scavenger hunt from 2-5 p.m. and a “block party” from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. The Haunted Little Tokyo Scavenger Hunt is an outdoor familyfriendly event, including maps to discover outdoor locations to receive fun treats. The Haunted Little Tokyo Block Party is an event for guests 21 and older at a secret location; there will be DJs, drinks, food and a costume contest. OCT. 31 L.A. CANCER CHALLENGE 5K WALK/ RUN FUNDRAISER The 24th annual L.A. Cancer Challenge 5K Walk/Run Halloween Fundraiser will be hosted and produced by Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, as it has been for more than two decades. It will take place on UCLA’s campus, where key research is performed. In-person and virtual walkers and runners can dress in festive Halloween costumes to convey unity for fi nding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Proceeds will benefi t the Hirshberg Foundation’s eff ort to advance pancreatic cancer research and provide information, support and resources to patients and families. A Fit Family Expo will highlight many of Los Angeles’ top vendors, Halloween festivities, course entertainment and more. NOV. 4 THE SORAYA: “STEWART COPELAND: POLICE DERANGED FOR ORCHESTRA” 8 P.M. Join The Soraya for an orchestral celebration of legendary composer, rock star and founder of “The Police” Stewart Copeland. “The Rhythmatist,” Copeland, returns to The Soraya to present a fresh take on the hit music of “The Police,” such as “Roxanne,” “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” and “Message in a Bottle.” “Stewart Copeland: Police Deranged for Orchestra” features Rusty Anderson on the guitar, Armand Sabal-Lecco on bass and three singers, Ashley Tamar, Carmel Helene and Amy Keys, as well as Copeland himself on the drums. Cheche Alara, Grammy and Latin Grammy Award winner, conducts the 28 member Los Angeles-based recollective orchestra. NOV. 4 – 7 UCLA’S CENTER FOR THE ART OF PERFORMANCE: “THE TUNE IN FESTIVAL” UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) presents “The Tune In Festival” at CAP UCLA Online. The four-day event convenes over 30 arts and ensembles that come together in cross-cultural solidarity to pay respect to music and poetry as sources of resilience, protest and inspiration. Kristy Edmunds, Creative Advisor, tapped award-winning performance poet J. Ivy and pianist Lisa Kaplan as associate curators. Their line-up creates hope and joy for a post-pandemic future.
