Moody’s Gives BHUSD Highest Possible Bond Rating By Laura Coleman Moody’s Investors Service announced Monday that it had upgraded Beverly Hills Unified School District’s general obligation bond rating from Aa1 to Aaa, its highest possible rating. “The upgrade to Aaa reflects the district’s large and growing tax base with substantial income and wealth levels,” according to Moody’s. “The rating additionally factors the district’s stable financial position with healthy reserves and
liquidity and its deepening entrenchment into ‘basic aid’ status.” The upgrade mirrors Standard & Poor’s decision last August to upgrade the district’s bond rating from AA to AA+, its highest possible rating. Approximately $286 million in outstanding general obligation bonds will be affected by the new rating. "The Beverly Hills Unified School District continues to have (see ‘MOODY’S’ page 14)

She also has a razor-sharp memory and a commitment to healthy eating that leads her to befuddle doctors who can’t believe that she doesn’t take one prescription medication. “See, I don’t like chemicals,” said Celia, who has been mostly vegetarian since she was 13. Beverly Hills Toxic Tree Cutting: The Gift That Keeps On Giving By Victoria Talbot Cutting down the trees on arsenic-laced soil without checking with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), not giving 30-day notice, or using the customary and proper precautionary measures in a residential area; doing so with the knowledge and endorsement of the executive City staff, without a permit to close Santa Monica Boulevard, placing residents at risk from toxic dust plumes for 11 days until finally, the DTSC tells both the landowner and
City that dust suppression must be in place – as if all of that were not enough, the mistakes made on Parcels 12 & 13 continue to add up. Lyn Konheim, the owner of the Beverly Hills Land Company (BHLC) that owns Parcels 12 & 13, told The Courier’s Marcia Hobbs that both City Manager Mahdi Aluzri and Deputy City Manager David Lightner assured him that no permits were needed and that Konheim could remove the trees. Beverly Hills Students Eye Academic Futures After High School By Laura Coleman College acceptance letters are rolling in every day, and for the students of Beverly Hills High School class of 2016 who applied for early decision college admissions, that means a wealth of opportunities. Already, 31 schools have sent offer letters to BHHS students, including Brown University, UCLA, Georgetown University, New York University and Princeton University. “The list is looking really good,” said BHUSD Chief Academic Officer Jen Tedford.
Last year, the Board of Education hired AhYoung Chi to serve as the BHHS dean of College Admissions in order to make the Beverly Hills applicant pool more competitive. Tedford added: “Ms. Chi does an amazing job with our counseling program. She, along with all of our guidance counselors, are working hard to ensure the best opportunities for all of our students.” Said Chi: “Given how truly competitive admissions is, I think our students did really well. There’s definitely a lot to celebrate.”

By Matt Lopez Beverly Hills Unified School District finally seems to have some clear cut construction plans moving into the new year. Using funds from the Measure E bond program, last Thursday the board gave direction to move ahead with a construction scenario that completes work at Horace Mann, modernizes buildings at El Rodeo, puts $5 million toward repairs at Beverly Vista and creates design and construction documents at Hawthorne. The total project cost would be just about all the $120 million cash on
hand BHUSD currently has. $200 million was drawn on Measure E and about $80 million of that has been expended to date. “No doubt work needs to get done, I just want the money in place before we start, that’s why [this scenario] works for me,” said boardmember Noah Margo, who gave direction to move ahead with the scenario along with boardmember Isabel Hacker and Vice President Mel Spitz. Margo added that a “very robust” bond election in November could pave the way to providing funds needed to complete all (see ‘MEASURE E’ page 14)

Beverly Hills Post Office Issues Continue By Victoria Talbot This week, the mail carrier left a pile of undelivered mail atop The Courier building’s mail slot. There, on top of the mail slot, was a pile First Class mail addressed to people throughout the City, including what appeared to be two unemployment checks from the Employment Development Department (not in time for Christmas) and a statement from American Express. So the problem is not even fixed at The Courier, despite our efforts. How many people are missing their important mail this Christmas? We continue to receive emails, though we have not reported on the situation in a couple of months. We pass these emails up the chain and hope for resolution. Sometimes we get a followup that a longtime problem was solved and we are delighted. Most of the emails that we receive have common elements. Among them
Beverly Hills Postmaster Koala Fuller figures prominently. Despite her promises to answer every call personally, Fuller does not answer her phone or return phone calls. Through intervention from the USPS public information officer, there have been specific cases where Fuller was allegedly reached and solved the problem. Other problems include mail that is not delivered, mail that never arrives or arrives very late, days when no mail at all is delivered, mail delivered to the wrong address, mail that is redelivered to the same wrong address repeatedly, mail on vacation hold that is lost, the failure to forward mail to a new address (particularly of concern for one resident who was divorced and received his exwife’s mail), and failed package deliveries. Anyone with a postal dilemma can write us at vtalbot@bhcourier.com.

Beverly Hills School District Passes First Interim Budget By Matt Lopez In addition to an upgrade in its bond rating, the Beverly Hills Unified School District also hopes to head into the new year with a newly-approved budget. At a special meeting last Thursday, the school board unanimously approved the district’s 2015-16 first interim budget. BHUSD Chief Administrative Officer La Tanya KirkCarter told the board Thursday she was “96-to-97-percent sure” the budget would be accepted by the Los Angeles County Office of Education
without qualifications. Kirk-Carter said the BHUSD is deficit spending in the current year, but doesn’t have a deficit budget because of the district’s healthy reserves. The budget shows a $551,287 general fund ending balance in 2015-16, but that number moves in the red to $121,295 in 2016-17 and $1.949 million in 2017-18. The Board of Education did discuss sending a letter to LACOE regarding the amount owed in a settlement with former facilities director Karen Christiansen. A September let-
ter from LACOE refers to the judgement as being $14 million, but that amount is now slightly more than $20 million. Spitz said he felt the board should send the letter to LACOE, but The Courier on Wednesday obtained a letter from BHUSD attorney Fred Fenster to Kirk-Carter, which was presumably then sent to LACOE, Fenster notes: “In short, the trial was akin to a default “prove-up” and resulted in a judgment against the district that now exceeds $20 million, including interest and attorney’s fees.” BATTER UP — Beverly Hills Little League (BHLL) registration is now open for its 64th season. Beverly Hills ESL Classmates Form International Friendship Over Language Class By Victoria Talbot Claudia Simos, a student of English as a Second Language (ESL) in the Beverly Hills Community Services Department, never expected to become so close to her fellow students that they would throw her a baby shower – but she did. A resident from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Simos moved to Beverly Hills less than two years ago. “It is hard living in a place where you know no one and you don’t speak the native language. Although I came here with my husband, we sometimes felt isolated,” said Simos. “Initially, I enrolled in an ESL class in another city. Although I was learning English, I didn’t feel connected to anyone. When I enrolled in the Beverly
Hills ESL class, I picked up the language much faster and connected with classmates very quickly. It felt like family to me. I attribute the success of the program to Esther Caporale.” Caporale is the head instructor of the ESL classes, taught through the Community Services Department as one of the City’s Adult Education Classes. With affordable tuition, the City provides the classes to students from over 30 countries, including China, Korea, Israel, Turkey, Columbia, Thailand, Ecuador, Poland, and Brazil. Classes include students who are here on business, visiting scholars from USC and UCLA, consulate members, teachers, engineers, lawyers,

Designed in partnership with leading hospitality design firm EDG, The Belvedere’s sleek new interior is the backdrop for a breathtaking multimillion-dollar art collection featuring contemporary artists including Alex Katz, Sean Scully, Tsuyoshi Maekawa and Fabienne Verdier. “The evolution of The Belvedere is a natural next step to enhancing our commitment to offering our guests exceptional experiences of the finest quality,” said Managing Director Offer Nissenbaum.
A defining feature of the new Belvedere will be the outdoor dining experience with the restaurant’s terrace now having doubled in space to become a lush garden oasis. Under the direction of Executive Chef David Codney, The Belvedere’s creative New American menu will see the introduction of Mediterraneaninspired cuisine with a heavy emphasis on seafood and locally sourced ingredients. Confirmed dishes for the new menu include Whole Roasted Branzino and Taramasalata. “We are grateful to the local community and to all our guests who have supported us throughout the years,” Nissenbaum said.

977. May 26. The New York Times film critic Vincent Canby wrote this sock-it-to’em love letter during the openinig of George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away in Star Wars. Nearly four decades later, with sequel after sequel, George’s firmament continues to detonate with Star Wars

Independent public TV station, KCET, has announced that the network’s busiest doctor, Martin Ellingham, will be making house calls again when the hit UK series Doc Martin returns with season seven (rumored to be the last) at 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14. KCET is the exclusive Southern California outlet for the show. To celebrate the show, KCET is holding a special across-the-pond sweepstakes this month where a lucky winner will experience first-hand the city that launched the Doc’s career—London. For details on the contest, visit kcet.org/London. No donation is required for entry. Doc Martin is a dramedy starring Martin Clunes as Ellingham, whose truculence and tactlessness cause mayhem in a small Cornish community. The series details the trials and tribulations of the brash Ellingham, a celebrated London surgeon who is forced to quit his job after developing a blood phobia. Much to his chagrin, he finds work as a general practitioner in the sleepy village of Portwenn. After a jaw-dropping cliffhanger wrapped up season six, the season seven opener kicks off with Ellingham going after Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) and their baby as they depart for Spain. Compass Brings High Tech Real Estate To Southern California
Beginning in 2014 and into 2015, one of the biggest stories The Courier followed was the ongoing work at 901 Strada Vecchia in Bel-Air, the nearly 30,000-square-foot megamansion designed by Mohamed Hadid. Earlier this month, The Courier reported that Hadid was finally named as a defendant in the L.A. District Attorney’s case against the property. The trial is set to be heard Jan. 20. Below are some pictures taken of the property over the last year.
By Victoria Talbot Compass, the luxury hightech real estate firm based in New York City, has arrived in Beverly Hills. The company opened an interim office last month at 9560 Wilshire Blvd. while they complete a more permanent space. The opening comes with the announcement that they have hired real estate veteran Kathy Mehringer as Regional Director of Risk Management and Education. Mehringer will oversee risk and transaction management, providing fulltime agent support on risk strategies. Former Director of Risk Management for Coldwell Banker, Mehringer has a career that spans nearly four decades, beginning with giants such as Fred Sands Realtors and the Jon Douglas Company. Since 1999, she has operated in the real estate industry as a California Association of Realtors (CAR) and National Association of Realtors (NAR) director, where she served as chair and vice chair of Standard Forms Advisory Committee. In 2012, she served CAR as a member of the executive committee and was elected “Director for Life,“ one of the association’s highest honors. “Compass is an excellent opportunity for me to do what I love – continue to educate

and motivate agents and assist them in closing transactions more efficiently while providing outstanding service to our clients,” she said. In Malibu, Compass is opening their second office with nationally ranked manager Jay Rubenstein, formerly of Coldwell Banker. Rubenstein will oversee day-to-day operations for Compass Malibu and work directly with Regional VP Stan Richman as well as Mehringer, to boost their continued success in Malibu’s luxury real estate market. Like Mehringer, Rubenstein’s career spans nearly four decades of success. Since 1994, he managed Coldwell Banker’s Malibu West office and served as branch education director for new independent agents, as well as a business strategy consultant for many experienced agents. Opening in New York in 2003, in recent years Compass has expanded to locations in Washington DC, Boston, Miami and the Hamptons, now making a name for itself in the highly competitive Los Angeles real estate market, as well. The firm boasts “intelligent home buying,” distinguishing itself by marketing through “integrated mobile and web technologies.”
Robert Durst To Be Extradited To L.A. On Murder Charges

Los Angeles County prosecutors and attorneys for New York real estate scion Robert Durst jointly filed an agreement today that could result in his extradition to Los Angeles by mid-August to face a charge of murdering a friend whose body was discovered on Christmas Eve 2000 in her Benedict Canyon home. The agreement -- signed by Durst, four of his attorneys and Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorneys John Lewin and Habib Balian about two months ago -- calls on the prosecution to use its "best efforts and all available legal means" to secure Durst's presence in a Los Angeles County courtroom for arraignment by Aug. 18 once he is sentenced in a federal court case in Louisiana. The agreement is only binding if a plea agreement is reached in the federal case against Durst, in which he was indicted for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Durst, 72, was charged March 16 with capital murder in the shooting death of his close friend, Susan Berman,
who was killed occurred on or about Dec. 23, 2000. The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegations of murder of a witness and murder while lying in wait, along with gun use allegations. Prosecutors have yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty. Authorities suspect Durst killed Berman because prosecutors in New York's Westchester County were about to interview her about the 1982 disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen "Kathie" McCormack Durst, who was in the process of divorcing him. According to court papers, Los Angeles police detectives claim two handwriting experts have linked Durst to an anonymous letter alerting authorities to a "cadaver" at Berman's home. Durst -- who was profiled in the HBO documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths Of Robert Durst, was arrested March 14 in a New Orleans hotel room. –– City News Service

TOXIC CUTTING (Continued from page 1)
Konheim was present at the DTSC meeting to discuss plans for remediation in June. The DTSC presented a detailed discussion on mitigation procedures for the toxic soil. Konheim said that he could not commit to leaving the property undeveloped or to creating a park on those parcels. The parcels are currently zoned for transportation, limiting the land use options. To change that, Konheim would have to follow a public process subject to City Council approval. In an email, Project Manager and Senior DTSC Scientist Ted Yargeau wrote that he recently read the arborist’s report (available on the City’s website). “BHLC, nor the City of Beverly Hills ever presented this report to DTSC... Although the long-term recommendation for the arborist paid for by BHLC is to remove all of the Eucalyptus trees, I did not see anything in there that states all 196 trees are diseased and need to be removed immediately. The incident [of the tree falling on a vehicle that] happened earlier this year… was the only incident that DTSC is aware of where there was an issue with an overhanging limb in all these years.” Deputy City Attorney Carol Watson Lynch of Richards Watson & Gershon, said that she has been unable to find any emails from DTSC which confirm that trimming the trees was okay as long as the roots were undisturbed, a concept that was put forth by City staff in the aftermath of the cutting. However, she found evidence of emails to that effect that only existed between City staffers. Lynch and Aluzri were at a quarterly meeting of Southeast Beverly Hills homeowners last Thursday, hosted by the city manager where they discussed the issue. Yargeau told a meeting of homeowners Wednesday
morning that Bruce Howard, attorney for BHLC, sent an email Nov. 23 stating that BHLC had approvals from former DTSC project manager Bob Krug. “Krug had exited that position June 30,” said Sayareh Amir, Yargeau’s supervisor at DTSC, also present at Wednesday’s meeting. “Krug gave permission for site maintenance and brush removal.” The arborist report was not delivered until October, confirmed City Manager Mahdi Aluzri, long after Krug reviewed the plan. The Courier has obtained a copy of the emails, which bear a detailed landscaping plan that does not mention cutting down trees; the document is strictly a maintenance plan to maintain a healthy, natural landscape. Brush trimming is discouraged, and there is no mention at all of trimming or cutting down trees. “Not sure how this would be considered an approval from us,” wrote Yargeau of the document. West Coast Arborists, Inc. (WCA), the firm that removed the trees on Parcels 12 & 13, maintains the City’s trees, as well. The firm has offices throughout California and Arizona. For City property, the company is permitted to close streets as needed for maintenance on the City’s trees. However, the work done on Parcels 12 & 13 was for a private developer, not the City of Beverly Hills. The same rules do not apply for a private contract; Lynch said that their permit applies only to their work on City property. Aluzri confirmed. In addition, it appears that the City of Beverly Hills owns the two-foot portion of the property located at the north side of the parcels and the south side of Santa Monica Boulevard, where most of the trees removed were located. “What I was telling people was that the trees were privately owned,” said Aluzri. “That
was incorrect.” It is unlikely that WCA had any knowledge that the work included both public and private property. In order to remove any trees, a City ordinance requires a Tree Removal Permit even when “the tree poses an immediate threat to public safety.” For trees that are on City property, there must also first be a public hearing. Since the trees were mostly on City property, that places both parties at fault. “We didn’t think the two feet were ours,” said Aluzri. (Beverly Hills Municipal Code Article 29 10-3-2901B). “We should have contacted DTSC,” he said. Trees that fall under this ordinance include Heritage Trees, defined as trees of 48 inches or more in circumference; Native Trees that are 24 inches or more in circumference; or Urban Groves of 50 or more trees with branches within six feet of each other. It is unclear if the Urban Grove definition applies solely to trees on residential private property, or other private property. Aluzri believes it applies only to R-1 zoned property. (Beverly Hills Municipal Code Article 29 10-3-2901A). Nevertheless, cutting down City trees without a public process is a gross violation for both Konheim and the City. Add to that it was on toxic property under the supervision of the DTSC and that the WCA closed down Santa Monica Blvd. without a valid permit. Assistant Director of Community Development Ryan Gohlich confirmed that as part of the investigation for the report to be delivered at the Jan. 5 City Council meeting, the location of each tree cut down is being measured to confirm if it was on City or private property. Photos taken of the site immediately following the cutting show trees that appear to be larger than 48 inches sitting very close to the edge of Santa Monica Boulevard, likely within the two-foot City-owned property.
MERRY CHLA-MAS—Last Sunday, volunteers from Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church delivered gifts from the “Holidays from the Heart” wishlists of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles patients and their families. Gifts included bikes, scooters, toys, books, strollers, diapers, formula, backpacks with school supplies, a microwave, a TV, a tablet and much, much more—all donated by church members and preschool families. From left, are “Holidays from the Heart” committee members Markus Canter, Cristie St. James, Meredith Lee Colby and Russ Colby (Not pictured: Melissa Trofino, Anne Atherton, Roy Atherton, Michela Carlton, Martin Wilson, Amy Eagles and Kristin Lehere.) Recipients are enduring both financial and health crises such as sickle-cell disease, cancer and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.
The ordinance states that each tree that is cut down without a permit is a separate violation and “may be prosecuted as a misdemeanor unless prosecuted as a civil administrative matter… Each and every tree removed or damaged in violation of this article shall constitute a separate offense.” In addition, the person “may be required to plant a healthy replacement tree of the same or similar species and size as the tree removed or damaged.” But before a single tree could ever be planted, the toxic soil must first be mitigated, confirmed Yargeau. The City also has a 20-foot easement on the south side of the parcels on Civic Center Way, where trees remain. The picture that is emerging is one in which City staff bends the rules to facilitate developers’ plans, in spite of the objections raised by the community during the days of the incident and in its immediate aftermath. Records of phone calls made to the police to report the tree cutting Nov. 21-22 have been located this week. Initial-
ly, the City could not find such phone records. But callers heard a canned speech from police personnel and different staffers, saying that the trees were being cut on private property, the owner could cut down his own trees, that there was a permit to close the street, and that the toxic arsenic was only a problem if they removed the tree stumps. The Courier asks if a relationship exists between developers and City staff, and former mayors - now lobbyists - that separates the City from the residents they are here to serve. Appeals to the City for answers to questions from The Courier are answered, “The City is still investigating the events surrounding the removal of trees on Parcels 12 and 13, including permits and ownership of the trees, and will give a report answering many of these questions at the Jan. 5 City Council meeting.” Today, the property is like a sad reminder of what once was, naked but for the bleeding stumps of 196 trees.

BHUSD schools. Last year, the State of California Seismic Mitigation Program (SSMP) identified 14 buildings at Beverly Hills that are seismically unsafe. With seismic experts constantly reminding Southern California residents that a “Big One” is looming, that could spell trouble for BHUSD buildings, some of which are 100 years old. Among the district’s oldest buildings are those at Beverly Hills High. However, the board did not give direction to move forward in renovating those buildings at its meeting last Thursday, which means that BHHS students will remain in the century-old buildings instead of moving into portable classrooms. “I don’t think head-in-sand disease is an appropriate response for this board,” said boardmember Lisa Korbatov, who has advocated for renovating all school buildings as soon as possible and moving students into interim housing. “I don’t see how anyone can advocate not doing the most we can.” Board President Howard Goldstein told The Courier he has placed the issue of BHHS construction back on the Jan. 12 agenda to, at the very least, find a solution regarding the KL Peters Auditorium closure. Goldstein, along with Korbatov, has advocated for the re-

had it there because I go there everyday for lunch because it’s wonderful for seniors.” Originally born in Philadelphia nearly a century ago, Celia moved with her parents and older sister to California when she was 4 years old. She recalled of the dream that lead her immigrant parents to move West: “You know what they said, ‘California, there’s gold on the streets, so come to California.’” The family moved into the Jewish section of Boyle Heights, whereupon Celia attended Malabar Elementary School and went on to graduate from Roosevelt High School. At 18, she met her husband-to-be, Milton, at a dance at Mogen David Temple. “A friend of mine said, ‘This temple is having a dance, would you like to go?’ So I got 10 cents for the Red Car up and 10 cents for the Red Car back and we went,” Celia recounted. Milton, who was also 18 (just five months older than Celia) immediately became enchanted with the diminutive young woman, who today weighs less than 90 pounds, and offered to take her home in his 1930 Ford roadster with a rumble seat.

habilitation of the school’s “B” buildings. Measure E has a capacity of $79 million in funds which could be accelerated to cover buildings B1-4 at the high school. Discussion turned heated between Korbatov and Hacker, who said she questioned the scope of work that would be required to renovate all BHUSD schools now, pointing to a School Accountability Report Card (SARC) that has annually given a “good” grade to the district’s buildings every year. BHUSD Facilities Director Tim Buresh, however, was blunt in countering the report, noting that the inspections were “done by janitors.” Buresh said the SARC wouldn’t be a good tool for identifying seismically unsafe structures, as it is strictly “visual... it tends to be very superficial. It normally triggers an indepth investigation only if something is visually failing.” An example of visual deficiencies looked for in the SARC Facility Inspection Tool are: severe cracks, missing or damaged posts/beams/supports, dry rot or mold in structural components, holes in walls, floors or ceilings, damage to exterior paint, plaster or finish, walls that are leaning or building and ceilings or floors that are sloping or sagging, among many more. Education Code Section 17002(d)(1)(g) specifically states that the facilities portion
of the SARC report is based on “visual” inspections. The words “appear” and “visual” are specifically used in the statute. In addition, BHUSD’s proposed seismic enhancements specifically fall outside of subsection (d)(1) since they would be "capital enhancements beyond the standards to which the facility was designed and constructed." At that meeting, the school board also approved an Environmental Impact Report for work at all BHUSD schools by a 4-1 vote. Hacker voted against the EIR, and in her line of questioning seemingly didn’t understand that voting for the EIR that covered all the BHUSD schools did not mean she was supporting construction at all five schools. “I cannot support the high school or Hawthorne because there is no money,” Hacker said, before asking whether or not the EIR approvals could be broken up individually by school project, but was told by staff that wasn’t a feasible idea. The school board also gave direction to staff to determine the necessity of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for potential three-to-four story subterranean parking under the proposed C building at BHHS. El Rodeo students will move into portable classrooms when they return to school on Jan. 4.
Celia recalled: “Milton drove, I sat next to him, his friend, Barney, that he’d come with, sat next to me, and my girlfriend that I came with sat in the rumble seat.” Milton spent the next two years courting her, coming to see her every day. On one date, he took Celia to the Chili Bowl along with his friend Barney, who was particularly peeved that she wouldn’t eat the meatheavy dish. “Barney said, ‘He spent 35 cents for lunch on you and you won’t eat it?’ He was annoyed with me. But see, my husband was in love with me, so anything I did was okay,” she recalled. They got married when they were both 20 and Milton began working with Celia’s sister’s husband, a plumber. “We kept moving farther and farther west until we got to Beverly Hills,” she described of their journey to her beloved City. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Beverly, Milton was drafted into the Korean War. He spent the next several years in Asia, while Celia lived with her parents and set about getting them a house of their very own. During that time, Celia was spending a lot of time with her sister, who lived in Beverlywood, nextdoor to her husband’s plumbing shop. The
area was just starting to be developed and Celia managed to acquire a lot from a real estate broker for just $25 down, she said. She then started to build a house. “I’m not a builder, but I’m a homeowner builder,” she described. “When I started building houses, women weren’t considered too important. It wasn’t easy.” Using her brother-in-law’s architectural plans for the home he built in concert with a variety of craftsmen who were working to build other Beverlywood homes and prevailing on them to make use of their leftovers to craft her home, she managed to build a beautiful house, complete with a gorgeous chartreuse tiled kitchen. Celia then opted to repeat the process, acquiring a lot down the hill, with the intention of building and selling a new home. Once she completed the spec-home, a potential buyer approached her, ultimately purchasing her first home; and she moved into the spec. With her husband now back from the war, she replicated her home-building process for a third time, this time crafting the home of her dreams. Milton, who ultimately went on to own two plumbing shops that employed 200 people, did all the plumbing work. “I put so much money into

They also experience American culture and traditions. One American tradition that many of the students had never experienced was having a baby shower. The gifts she received assure Simos that she will have everything she will need for her newborn, said Caporale. “Claudia and many of the members of the ESL classes are not familiar with the American that house, I thought I’d live there forever,” she said. That all changed when Beverly returned from her freshman year at UC Berkeley and informed her parents that, “the smartest kids come from Beverly Hills.” Given that her two sons, Dennis and Ronnie were respectively 9 years and 16 years younger than Beverly, Celia knew that she had to move the family into Beverly Hills. Using the money they got from the sale of their Beverlywood home, the Levitts purchased a lot on Hillcrest Road in Beverly Hills. Recalled Celia: “There weren’t too many lots available on Hillcrest Road. Danny Thomas lived at the top, and Bing Crosby’s brother and Morey Amsterdam both were across the street. Groucho Marx was up the street, and Dinah Shore was down below.” And once again, Celia orchestrated the building of their new home. “It was a magnificent house,” she recalled of the seven-bathroom residence with a waterfall out back that the family moved into in 1960. Dennis went directly into the high school and Ronnie started attending the first grade at Hawthorne. The boys became particularly active in sports, Dennis ran track and Ronnie played baseball, with

I am deeply sensitive to the isolation that sometimes comes with migrating to another country. While our classes are rigorously academic, we also take time to get to know each other and explore our cultural diversity, which provides more of a connection to each other and to this country,” said Caporale. Milton coaching Ronnie’s team. Ronnie ended up becoming close friends with Fraser Heston, and spending time playing with his friend on Charlton Heston’s tennis court. Once all their children had left the nest, Milton and Celia ended up moving into the newly built L’Ermitage. Milton’s friend, Severyn Ashkenazy, had built the hotel and in lieu of paying Milton for putting in the plumbing at the hotel, Celia said he ended up putting them up for five years in what ultimately became the presidential suite. After that, they moved briefly to a condominium at Le Parc in Century City before someone offered them cash to move out and they returned to Beverly Hills, this time acquiring a condominium. All told, the Levitts counted 76 years of marriage until Milton passed away two years ago. Celia shared how her grandson, actor/writer Joseph Gordon-Levitt, once used a line in a movie he wrote that Milton often said to her: “I love you more now than I did when I met you, because I know you better.” Indeed, there is a lot of love in Celia’s life. “Beverly Hills is the best place for my age,” she said. “I love Beverly Hills and I love going to Roxbury.”

Nutrition Notes—Seasonal Discoveries At The Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market By Ilana Mulhstein, R.D.N. There is nothing better than waking up on a cool and crisp Sunday morning with the family, donning your knit sweaters (the L.A. version of a winter coat), and heading to the Beverly Hills Farmers Market. I love to be there close to the 9 a.m. opening to beat the crowds and get the best picks at the produce. And in these December, January and February months, there are amazing seasonal discoveries. • Mini Fuyu (Fuyugaki) Persimmons Season: October-February Health Benefits: These non-astringent persimmons are an excellent source of vitamin A, a good source of vitamin C, and high in fiber. They contain a variety of phytochemical antioxidants such as proanthocyanidin, epictechin, gallic, and pcoumaric acids. One study found persimmons to be higher in soluble and insoluble fiber, total phenols, and many more minerals than apples. And one study showed that rats fed persimmon extract significantly lowered their total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Mini Fuyu persimmons, Turmeric Ginger Lemon Cayenne Shot and broccolini at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market.
What to do with it: Bite into them whole, like you would an apple, avoiding the core and leaves. You can also slice them thin and add to salads, serve with a cheese platter, or chop up into your oatmeal or even your salsa. • Turmeric Ginger Lemon Cayenne Shot Farmer Stand: Pulp Story Nutritional Benefits: This antioxidant-rich booster shot is
perfect for enhancing your immune system entering flu season. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C. They also contain vitamin A, folate, calcium, potassium, and limonene, a compound shown to have anticancer properties. Ginger is a rich source of powerful antioxidants such as gingerols, zingerones, and shogaols. Ginger has been proven in studies to significantly reduce nausea, motion sickness, and reduced inflammation and knee pain for those with osteoarthritis. Curcumin is a phytochemical found in turmeric that has strong antioxidant properties and has been well researched for its cancer-fighting and antiinflammatory properties. And finally, cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which acts as a powerful decongestant by releasing mucus from respiratory passages. What to do with it: Drink it straight or mix it into a smoothie with fruit to help mask the powerful taste. • Broccolini also referred to as Japanese Broccoli (see ‘NUTRITION,’ page16)

StandWithUs Marks 14 Years, Honors Resident David Wiener More than 1,200 people gathered to celebrate StandWithUs’ (SWU) “Festival of Lights” annual gala celebrating the organization’s 14 years at the Century Plaza Hotel. SWU was founded in 2001 by Roz and Jerry Rothstein and community leader Esther Renzer as an international organization that educates peoples of all ages and faiths about Israel. The organization now has multiple chapters throughout the U.S. and Israel, Canada and the U.K. The gala was underwritten by Ellie and Bruce Lederman and residents Debbie and Naty Saidoff, so all proceeds will go to 2016 programming. SWU honored two philanthropists who have dedicated their lives to supporting Israel: Leo David and resident David Wiener. Weiner is a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to America after World War II ended, and David moved to Israel from Germany where he joined the Israeli army before moving to New York. Both warned of the danger
Israel is facing as a result of the propaganda war promoted by the boycott movement, primarily on campuses. They commended SWU for educating people of all ages around the world, particularly high school and college students. Two U.S. congressmen were honored with the StandWithUs Guardian of Israel Award—Ed Royce (R39th district) and Juan Vargas (D-51st district)—for voting against the Iran Nuclear Deal and continuing to approve aid to Israel. SWU President Esther Renzer also acknowledged State Assemblyman Travis Allen who recently introduced a bill in the state assembly which would prohibit the state from doing business with any entity that would boycott Israel. Keynote speaker Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Organizations, wove Hanukkah themes into the present day challenges both Israel and America face.

Joan Mangum Boys & Girls Clubs of America honored five-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Evander Holyfield, with the “Champion of Youth Award” at its annual Great Futures Gala in The Beverly Hilton. Some 450 guests entered into the ballroom to the musical dance routine of Molodi and Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica’s Mar Vista Gardens Steppers, kicking up their heels before the evening’s host, JB Smoove, took the stage, recounting his own experiences with the organization. Jim Clark, president/CEO of BGCA, stressed the social and economic importance of the organization, noting that today, “There are 15 million kids and teens living in poverty and nearly 11 million leave school every day with no place to go. The result,” he continued, “20-percent of America’s youth fail to graduate high school and for minority and low-income youth, it’s nearly 50-percent. That’s where this organization comes in, when nearly 4 million kids enter Club doors at 4,200 locations around the country and the world, their lives are changed forever.” According to Clark, 54-percent of alumni credit Boys & Girls Clubs with saving their lives. Fostering the ability to dream big, other notable Boys & Girls Club alumni, including Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, actor Martin Sensmeier and former NBA player and current FOX Sports Big Ten anchor Jim Jackson spoke about how the clubs had encouraged them to dream and how those dreams were eventually fulfilled. Denzel Washington, BGCA national spokesperson, presented the award to Evander Holyfield. Growing up in Atlanta, Holyfield took boxing lessons as a child at a local Boys & Girls Club, participating in Golden Gloves competitions in the early 1980s and went on to receive a Bronze Medal as part of the U.S. Olympic team. Following the Olympics, Holyfield turned professional and won his first Heavyweight Championship in 1990, defeating James “Buster” Douglas. Following his defeat to Riddick Bowe in 1992, he recaptured the title when he defeated Rowe in a rematch. He credits Boys & Girls Clubs for turning him into a man and is currently helping recruit members to the new Boys & Girls Clubs Alumni & Friends Clubs, an effort that aims to engage the more than 18 million estimated alumni. Andrew R. Tennenbaum of Flashpoint Entertainment and and Tim Wennes of Union Bank chaired.

****** About $1.4 million was raised to support the Fulfillment Fund’s mission at the 21st annual Stars benefit gala in The Beverly Hilton as Hollywood producer Mark Gordon was honored for his devotion to education and contributions to the community with the “Tom Sherak Stars Award.” “Mark has inspired all of us by highlighting the importance of teamwork to build better educational outcomes for students in L.A.,” said Fulfillment Fund CEO Kenny Rogers. The 700 guests enjoyed a performance by Brenna Whitaker and a student choir from Hamilton High School, a Fulfillment Fund partner school. Film director, Roland Emmerich got the fundraising started as he made a “raise the paddle” donation of $25,000 to help Fulfillment Fund students participate in college tours, counseling and one-on-one mentoring. Actor Jason Isaccs was emcee. Spotted were musical artist Brenna Whitaker, Jes Meza, Lorraine Toussaint, James Pickens, Jr., Kristen Vangsness, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chris Meledandri, Rich Ross and Jeff Shell, Jon Avnet, producer Erica Messer and Spago’s Barbara Lazaroff. Miracles seem to abound during the holiday season, and I don’t mean finding a parking space on Rodeo Drive or on equally trendy El Paseo in Palm Desert. The miracles about which we speak are those that result from people helping people and making even the smallest improvement in the quality of the lives of others. There is one Desert non-profit that believes: “Miracles Do Happen.” In fact, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding recognizes this fact in its mission statement. Since 1986, under the direction of Lori Sarner, Pegasus provided and developed full body range of exercise programs maximizing the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding. She grew the program slowly, working on procedures and ideas in the Desert and in England, where she is one of a small handful of people permitted to ride and work with Queen Elizabeth’s horses. Starting with two horses and four riders, Pegasus now has a stable of more than two dozen horses and 175 active riders, all supported by 120 volunteers. Pegasus’ riders come from all three Desert school districts as well as from organizations such as Angel View and the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, with other riders referred by private physicians and physical therapists. Pegasus recently held its annual Riders Awards Luncheon where each rider receives a medal as a token of his or her participation in Pegasus. Words cannot do justice to the beaming smiles and the outpouring of excitement of the children as each child was recognized. In addition, two special awards are given. This year the “Pegasus Family of the Year” award recognized the Brousseau Family consisting of riders Shailah, Hoppe, Alexander Stephen and Cameron, and their parents Lynn and Jack Brouosseau. Travis Martin, whose parents are Dr. Tamela and John Martin, received the prestigious “Pegasus Rider of the Year” award. If you would like to be a wish-giver donating your time, money or both, more information about how you can enter this magical world is available at 760-772-3057. ****** Addressing the question: “What afternoon school programs are available for the enrichment of Valley children?” That’s the mission of Tools For Tomorrow, a local non-profit that provides the answers with on-site, after school literacy enrichment programs integrating writing, drama, art and music; all at no cost to the children. The idea is not new, but the dedication and determination of the Tools for Tomorrow volunteers provide stimulation, productivity, success and competence, assuring each child feels successful as they create original works in art, creative writing, drama and music, all the while enjoying themselves in the learning and creative process, developing the necessary competencies that will carry them through life. If you would like to meet the caring people at Tools For Tomorrow, the best way to do that is at one of its events, the next being on Monday, March 21, when former top-ranked U.S. tennis champion, founder of the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens and philanthropist Charlie Pasarel, will be honored at the Vision for the Future Award luncheon. If you want to get involved sooner, then more information regarding Tools For Tomorrow is available 760-601-3954.

Coping With Adult Children When They Find Themselves In Financial Hot Water Q. Dear Dr. Fran: Should parents bail out their adult kids’ debt? Mitchell G. A. Dear Mitchell: When an adult son or daughter racks up high charges to the point of creating financial debt, it is usually a sign that his or her parents failed to set clear boundaries with follow-through during the formative years of early childhood and adolescence.
These kids either become overly entitled adults or simply never develop enough of an internal alarm that screams “stop” when they purchase beyond their means. So, “should parents bail out their kids?” is the question at hand. My answer is if this is the first time your adult child has gotten into financial debt, you have one singular final opportu-

MARCIA WILSON HOBBS As we enjoy this holiday season, it’s always wonderful to inject a little levity during these trying times. For that, we turn the page over to our Roger Lefkon for his latest phobia.
Another Phobia From Roger Lefkon THE FEAR OF RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT Once upon a time, with the encouragement of family and friends, I made the decision to run for president of my high school class. I surrounded myself with the most brilliant political strategists of the day, the same brain trust that had saturated Southside High School with flyers, campaign buttons and posters all proclaiming that a vote for Roger was an endorsement for shorter skirts for cheerleaders, less homework, greater sexual freedom during gym class, a ban on teachers over 25 years of age and a more relaxed approach to cheating on final exams. My campaign slogan was “a dishonorable victory trumps an honorable defeat.” My rival was Gilbert Lipchitz, star quarterback of the football team, a straight “A” student, owner of a red Corvette (paid for in cash), a smooth operator with the girls and the son of the owner of the local bank that held the mortgages of most of my classmates’ homes. To round out the picture his mother, Daisy, was a Playboy centerfold and bunny while his dog, Gottcha, consistently won best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club. I was up against formidable opposition which explains why I lost the election by a vote of 397-11. Refusing to accept defeat gracefully, I demanded a recount and the vote was subsequently changed to 4053! Later in life I ran for president of my college fraternity and won by default when it was discovered that my opponent was having an affair with the wife of our brotherhood’s adviser. The winning trend continued as I became top dog of the American Weiner Association and head honcho of the Seniors for Justin Bieber Fan Club. My greatest fear however was running for the office of president of the United States. With the country clamoring for an outspoken candidate with no government experience, someone who was financially independent with no ties to Super PAC’s, lobbyists, foreign juntas and the Wall Street crowd, I felt uniquely qualified. In order to raise money I disposed of my extensive baseball trading card collection for big bucks and sold my mother’s prized recipe for meatloaf (as closely guarded as the formula for Coca Cola) to the Royal Family for a king’s ransom. With my political coffers stuffed with hard cash, no soft money for me, I set out to run for the highest office in the land. In order to generate some buzz for my candidacy I decided to make several key cabinet announcements prior to securing the nomination. Drawing on the power of TV and playing to middle America, I chose as my vice-president one Julia Louis-Dreyfus from the highly rated Veep series. For secretary of the Treasury, I made a bold decision to tap Bernie Madoff as soon as I gave him an executive pardon. If anyone could eliminate our astronomical foreign debt it would be Bernie and a stint in the slammer would certainly bolster his standing with the mercurial international community.
For secretary of Housing I decided to take a nepotism hit and install my brother Harris who, as a world class “Monopoly” player, always had a unique talent for transforming little green houses into lavish red hotels. His genius would promote just the kind of housing boom needed to boost our economy. My choice for secretary of Homeland Security was Wang Tian, a descendent of Meng Tian who, during the Qin Dynasty, was responsible for construction of the Great Wall of China. His first assignment would be to build a wall around the Continental United States designed to keep the “rif-raft” out. Alaska and Hawaii would have to fend for themselves. As the media started clamoring for specifics about my vision for America and recognizing that most Americans require some form of vision correction, it occurred to me that I didn’t really have a well thought out campaign strategy. Furthermore, the whole vetting process was something to be feared. Who knows what a background check might reveal about my checkered past? Clearly I was vulnerable. I had to weigh the pros and cons. On the plus side being president would provide me with a mortgage-free home with 32 bathrooms, enough to make first lady Phyllis Klein a happy camper. I would also get to pardon a turkey every Thanksgiving, have friends and former wives sleep over in the Lincoln bedroom, receive complimentary laundry and dry cleaning service (no more schlepping to Pico Cleaners), have access to an armored plated limo with its own portable blood bank and oxygen supply (scratch tooling around town in my humble Prius) and of course roaming the globe in safety and style aboard Air Force One (say goodbye to lengthy airport delays, security strip searches, bad food, crying babies, pleading for an exit row seat and standing in line to use the bathroom). However, the best perk of all would be a state funeral with all the pomp and circumstances befitting a chief executive who hails from Brooklyn. The downside was that my life would be an open book and most importantly my secret service protection would not cover my dog Piper (a deal breaker). At the end of the day I decided to pass on the American Presidency and accept the equally prestigious position of president of the AAA with it’s plethora of benefits. (Free 24-hour road service, maps galore, a subscription to Westways magazine, vanity license plates bearing the inscription “Roadrunner One” and unlimited discounts at Disneyland.) I think Bill Clinton had it right when he said: “Being president is like running a cemetery: you’ve got a lot of people under you and nobody’s listening.” Longtime Beverly Hills resident Roger Lefkon is a veteran TV writer/producer, a former senior executive with Merv Griffin Entertainment, and author of The World Is A Really Scary Place.
Cartoon for The Courier by Janet Salter
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Every day as I drive by the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica, I enjoy the sight of the beautiful new Waldorf Astoria rising beautifully, quickly and it–seems–almost effortlessly. It will be another jewel in the tiara of our City bringing travelers, tourists and jobs to Beverly Hills. I can’t help but contrast the construction of the hotel to the restoration of the Beverly Gardens Fountain directly across the street from the hotel. Is it just me or does it seem odd to others that in the time it has taken to build so much of the hotel, the work of completing the fountain restoration grinds on interminably? In an ironic twist, a now weathered sign proclaims, “The Restoration Continues.” It stands not far from another weathered sign announcing the completion of the fountain restoration scheduled for August of 2015. Earl Goldstein ****** When people ask me “Did you grow up here?” I always say “Yes I lived in the northern-most section of Beverly Hills. It’s known as Encino.” This of course emphasizes the point that so many people want to be from this amazing boutique town and will stretch their geographic heritage to mesh with our borders here in Beverly Hills As a kid in the 1960s, I used to visit my grandfather Orrie Lifson at his apartment on Olympic Boulevard. and get a special treat afterward, climbing atop the rocket ship at Roxbury Park and visiting Wil Wright’s for a scoop of peppermint stick ice cream. I always wanted to live here. For the last 12 years, my wife and now our daughters have lived next door to the very apartment building my grandfather lived in. We call our cozy apartment “the treehouse” and, although we could use some extra space, we couldn't be happier in our little home. Why? Because we have El Rodeo School, sidewalks everywhere, tree lined streets and the best $10 healthy meal options around at places like Mickey Fine Grille and Brighton Coffee Shop. A childhood dream has become a reality. We Lifsons hope you enjoy living here as much as we do. Happy New Year to all our neighbors! Hal, Brigitte, Sofia, and Olympia Lifson
