Venoco Could Drain $15 Million From Beverly Hills Schools By Laura Coleman The Beverly Hills Unified School District could be on hook for upwards of $15 million if Venoco Inc. winds up going bankrupt before it can remediate the contamination related to operating the Beverly Hills High School oil well, confirmed BHUSD attorney Jeffrey Vinnick with Haight Brown & Bonesteel LLP. Right now, Venoco’s lease with the school district terminates Dec. 31 of this year, with the stipulation that the company must have the site cleaned by Mar. 31, 2017. That 90-day clean-up period is vastly insufficient by Venoco’s own admission, Vinnick said. “Expensive and complicated’ is how they described it,” Vinnick

said of a Jan. 21 meeting he’d had with Venoco. At the time, he said, the oil company estimated it would take several years to remediate the site at an approximate cost of $10$15 million. However, Venoco may not even be in existence as a company to see the remediation process through. Last week Venoco failed to make an interest payment while it figures out how to keep its operations solvent in the wake of falling oil prices and the ongoing closure of Plains All-American pipeline. Venoco Senior Land Negotiator Patrick Moran told The Courier he had “no comment” regarding a possible bankruptcy. (see ‘VENOCO’ page 22)

Hollywood Stunt Performers Rally In Beverly Hills For Oscars Inclusion By Laura Coleman Ever since Mad Max: Fury Road debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last May, audiences have been captivated by the non-stop action film. Indeed, the high-octane blockbuster with a powerful message about dystopian trends is up for 10 Academy Awards at Sunday’s 88th Oscar ceremony. Ironically, the stunt profession-

als who helped make this film so dynamic do not even have their own Oscar category. It’s an “injustice” that Jack Gill, stunt coordinator for the upcoming Fast 8, said he has spent over 25 years trying to get the Academy to make it right. “Ask anybody in the business, they think we already have a category; it’s just not televised,” he (see ‘STUNT RALLY’ page 22)

Hawthorne Auditorium Added To Measure E Work By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills Board of Education moved forward with construction plans for its Measure E funds, adding the Hawthorne Auditorium to a scope of work that already included modernization at Horace Mann, El Rodeo, Beverly Hills High and Beverly Vista. Hawthorne’s auditorium, along with those at Beverly Hills High and El Rodeo, were closed last April when studies revealed the ceiling was vulnerable to a collapse. “We all feel it’s really im-

By Matt Lopez San Leandro Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli has been hired to become new chief of the Beverly Hills Police Department. Spagnoli, a 33-year law enforcement veteran, will take over for BHPD Chief Dominick Rivetti on March 14. “I am looking forward to becoming part of the City of Beverly Hills team and building on the legacy of excellence in City services and safety,” Spagnoli said in a statement. “The community and police department have an outstanding reputation and it is an honor to be selected as the next police chief in Beverly Hills.” Spagnoli, 48, started with the San Carlos Police Department in 1983 as an explorer, before being hired as a fulltime officer in 1990. She was promoted to sergeant in 1996 and commander in 1998. She was chief of the Benicia Police Department for four years before being named San Leandro

Beverly Hills Elders: Barbara, Martin Schechter – 50 Years In Beverly Hills Part 68 in a series on Beverly Hills residents who have grown with the Centennial City By Laura Coleman Barbara and Martin Schechter moved to Beverly Hills half a century ago, taking up residence in a beautiful home that had once been featured in Architectural Digest. Barbara, who had taught second grade for a year at Beverly Vista before becoming pregnant with the first of three children, still remembers the neighborly feeling that permeated the City. “It was a community where you really got to know your neighbors and you could leave your door unlocked,” she reminisced. “I love the idea of knowing the neighbors and I

Virginia Robinson Gardens Has Biggest Coral Tree In California By Laura Coleman In the Virginia Robinson Gardens bucolic Italian Terrace Garden, there stands a 65-foot South African Coral Tree that was planted from a seed in the 1940’s by Mrs. Robinson following a trip to South Africa. As of this week, that tree, which boasts a trunk circumference of 184 inches and an average crown spread of 80 feet, officially became the largest tree of its kind in the state when it was listed as a California Big Tree. “It’s a champion individual,” described Matt Ritter, the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

By Laura Coleman When the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) approached Beverly Hills High School honors history teacher Joanie Garratt about participating in its upcoming gala on Wednesday, she didn’t hesitate. Last year, several of her students had volunteered for the gala and the experience had been truly rewarding. This year, in addition to serving as volunteers at the March 2 gala, the students are also featured in a film that ties into the Mu-

seum’s newest exhibit, “State of Deception: Nazi Propaganda.” Earlier this month, the Museum filmed Garratt teaching a lesson about Nazi Propaganda to the 21 students in her honors history class, all of whom will attend Wednesday’s gala. “By studying propaganda’s effect on society, we see the role of the individual and how each one of us can have an impact,” explained BHHS student Ariana Wilner. By taking students through a five-step process to identify

propaganda–all via comprehensive lesson plans available on the USHMM website–Garratt said students are asked to consider how they will respond if they encounter hate speech or messages today. “Are you a perpetrator, a bystander or a rescuer?” she recently asked her students. According to BHHS sophomore Mikaela Rabizadeh, each citizen has a duty to confront modern propaganda. “We can’t hide behind fear,” she said.

By Victoria Talbot Facing a shortfall in funding for the much-anticipated Beverly Hills Dog Park, Councilmember Lili Bosse will lead fundraising efforts at the upcoming Woofstock event at Roxbury Park to elevate the bare-bones park to the standard residents and their pooches will happily howl about . As mayor, Bosse made the dog park a core initiative, overcoming many hurdles to make doggie dreams come true. Now, after so much effort, the park is underway, but facing a shortfall in available funding. Sponsors are needed for trees, benches, water fountains, rock elements and possible artistic additions. To create a more welcoming space, the City will turn to the generosity of its residents to

bring seating, appropriate landscaping and shade that will create a peaceful urban refuge for man and beast. Where better to kick-off the fundraising than at Beverly Hills’ most dog-friendly event? On March 6, Roxbury Park will become Doggie Central. Thousands of visitors each year participate in this pet extravaganza, where humans become spectators to the canine world. Adjacent to the information booth, under a City canopy, dog lovers everywhere will be able to show their support to bringing the dog park dream alive. And for those who would like to go to the dog park, but do not yet have a pet, the Pet Care Foundation will be on hand sponsoring pet adoptions with 100 beautiful animals ready to go home with their new families. Many will have

had the Pet Care Foundation Makeover, getting the spit and polish of a professional groomer to shine up a rescued animal for adoption. Pet Care Foundation is bringing animals from rescue organizations across Los Angeles County to participate in this mega-adoption event alongside the Amanda Foundation. These organizations include Saving Watts Dogs Rescue, Wags and Walks, the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter, South Los Angeles Animal Shelter, Pomeranian Rescue and Beoples Buddies. 35 remarkable pet-friendly vendors will be on hand, along with local pet pals Pussy and Pooch will have a photo booth where visitors can meet Gentleman Norman, doggie author of How To Be A Perfect Gentleman. Rec & Parks Commission Gets Beverly Hills Dog Park Update; Donations Needed to Complete Park By Victoria Talbot An update on the longawaited Beverly Hills Dog Park was brought forth at the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting Tuesday. The facility will have an existing tree for shade, three benches, and a small and large dog park. The basic design will not have enhanced shade, landscaping, or other amenities. With newly-seated Commission Chair Francis Bilak presiding, the report was delivered by soon-to-be Director of Community Services Nancy Hunt Coffey, named as the replacement for Steve Zoet, who announced his retirement effective next month. Hunt-Coffey explained that the basic option, without enhancements,

will ensure that the park is in place and operational as soon as possible, probably at the end of the summer or early fall. Those enhancements will have to come through donations, said Hunt-Coffey, because of the enormous cost of clean up on the site, which will take all of the $400,000 budgeted for the project. Soil cleanup must be completed before construction can begin. Before construction can begin, the soil has to be mitigated for contamination, a process that requires the removal and replacement of toxic soil contaminated by historic uses. Unlike Parcels 12 & 13, with as much as 996 mg/kg of arsenic, the dog park location is about 45 mg/kg.

Soils in the region have naturally occurring arsenic up to 25 mg/kg. But the price tag is high $400,000 - 450,000 - leaving no budget for walls, drainage, irrigation, lighting, shade, and other amenities. The Beverly Hills City Council has expressed their interest in removing any contaminants in the City which may present health hazards for residents. For Parcels 12 & 13, the financial responsibility of clean up falls on the Union Pacific Railroad, which has a voluntary clean up agreement with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). The dog park land is not under DTSC control, and clean (see ‘DOG PARK’ page 14)

New BHUSD Facilities Chief Asks School Board To Chill On Chiller Pipes By Laura Coleman The Board of Education unanimously voted to hire an outside consultant to review a $750,000 agreement to construct piping after its new facilities chief Eitan Aharoni expressed concern that the district had entered into a bad contract. “Are we actually benefitting?” he questioned at Tuesday’s board meeting. “Engage a third-party peer reviewer to check the calculations and prove me wrong.” The Board approved an Energy Supply Agreement with

Veolia Energy Los Angeles, Inc. on Dec. 17, 2015 to supply chilled water for cooling purposes at BHHS. On Feb. 9, the board approved an agreement with DLR Architects for the design of 1,300 lineal feet segment of underground piping along Heath Ave. to connect the supply point from Veolia to building A, where the existing school chillers are located. After reviewing the details of the agreement, Aharoni said he believes that the district could save a significant amount of money by providing a reliant upgraded system in-

house. Boardmember Noah Margo, who brought the issue to the board’s attention, cautioned: “It’s a rather permanent solution that we don’t want to have to put in to take out.” The board unanimously voted to delay DLR Architects from commencing the design of the underground piping and gave Aharoni permission to solicit an independent professional peer review of the cost benefit, at a cost not-to-exceed $3,500. “He could probably save us a ton of money,” Superintendent Steve Kessler said.

Bringing Democracy To Bel-Air – Residents Respond To BAA Stonewall On Various Issues By Matt Lopez It was a fairly simple request, that led to an unnecessarily complicated response. Pursuant to the bylaws of the Bel-Air Association (BAA), certain members of the organization made a request on Feb. 12: hold a special meeting on Feb. 25 to discuss various issues members were concerned about, including the group’s new land-use policy and potential conflict of interest concerns. The letter, which was signed by BAA members Dan Love, Marcia Hobbs, Maureen Levinson, Jamie Meyer and Frederic D. Rosen, requested an agenda that called for the following: 1) Explanation and discus-

sion of the BAA’s new land-use policy; 2) Considering a motion to prohibit a husband and wife from serving simultaneously on the BAA board; 3) Discussing future employment of the Executive Director, who must be available to answer all questions from the audience; 4) Discussion of Bruce Kuyper’s role with the BAA (Kuyper’s current title is Director of the BAA) and 5) Discussion of the BAA’s position on the Bel-Air Bar & Grill, with President Ron Hudson explaining to members why he did not disclose a conflict of interest, considering that he has taken office space at that location. Planning Hearing Set On Enormous West Los Angeles Martin Cadillac Project By Victoria Talbot The Los Angeles City Planning Department is hosting the first public hearing on a proposed mixed-use project at the intersection of Olympic and Bundy that will include 516 residential units, a 50,000 square-foot grocery store, 40,000 square feet of general retail, 9,000 square feet of

restaurant, 200,000 square feet of office area and a subterranean parking lot with 1,548 spaces. The project will substantially increase density in the area. Dubbed the Martin Cadillac project for the one-story building it seeks to replace, the city of L.A. is seeking public

CHLA Doctors Perform Rare Fetal Cardiac Procedure For 1st Time In SoCal Last August, when Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) cardiologists confirmed that the heart of a 27week-old fetus suffered from a critical cardiac condition that prevented blood returning from the fetus’s lungs from circulating back into the body, they told the parents that their child faced certain open-heart surgery after birth. Even worse, babies born with this rare condition—Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) with restrictive atrial septum— have a 50-percent neonatal mortality rate. But thanks to CHLA doctors, the Davilas had another option—having their unborn child (now delivered and named Grayson) undergo a fetal cardiac intervention procedure in utero. The procedure would be coordinated by fetal therapy specialists from the CHLA-USC Institute for Maternal-Fetal Health. If all went well, Grayson would survive and undergo open-heart surgery performed by CHLA’s heart surgery team, led by cardiothoracic surgeon Vaughn Starnes, MD, co-director of the CHLA Heart Institute. On Sept. 9, the physicians gathered at CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center to perform what cardiologists describe as an “in utero atrial septal stent procedure” to open the atrium, allowing blood trapped in the lungs and left upper heart chamber of a HLHS fetus to flow back to the right side of the heart. The successful procedure was a first for the Institute for Maternal-Fetal Health and a first for a Southern California hos-

pital. The fetal interventionalist conducting the procedure was Ramen Chmait, MD, director of Los Angeles Fetal Surgery, a branch of the CHLA-USC Institute for Maternal-Fetal Health. Chmait guided a thin needle into the mother’s womb and into the heart of the fetus. Pediatric interventional cardiologist Frank Ing, MD, co-director of the CHLA Heart Institute, then deployed a stent device in the developing child’s heart. Ultrasound guidance (fetal echocardiogram) provided by CHLA fetal cardiologist Jay Pruetz, MD, showed the way for both physicians. “Completing this highly specialized fetal intervention procedure contributed to Grayson’s ability to survive after his birth,” says Chmait, associate professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at the USC’s Keck School of Medicine. “It successfully strengthened his lungs so the surgeons could do their job after he was born.” Chmait used a thin (18-gauge) metal needle, called a cannula, to penetrate the mom’s stomach, guiding it into her uterus, through the amniotic cavity and into the fetus’s torso. The cannula was carefully finessed into the fetus’s heart (which is about the size of a small walnut), puncturing the atrial septum with the needle tip inside the fetus’s left atrium. With the cannula stationed across the atrial septum, Ing then threaded a hair-thin wire (0.014 inches) down through the tube, the wire acting as a rail

for Ing to gently maneuver a tiny, 8-millimeter-long stent across the septum. Ing mounted the stent onto a balloon catheter for delivery and used a predetermined amount of pressure to inflate the delivery balloon and expand the stent to open a pathway in the atrial septum. The team of doctors determined the stent was in good position by ultrasound imaging, and then deployed it by inflating the balloon catheter. Once the stent was confirmed to be functioning, the balloon catheter was deflated and everything was removed from the baby and the mother, including the wire and needle. The stent remained in the heart to allow blood flow out of the

left upper chamber, across the atrial septum, and back into circulation in the right side of the heart. The procedure itself took about 15 minutes once the fetus was in place and ended after 30 minutes. The stent held up until the late third trimester, when it appeared to close down, providing little to no flow between the fetus’s upper heart chambers, Pruetz says. But in the interim, the lungs had been given time to strengthen and develop during a critical time window of gestation. Ten weeks after the stent procedure, mom Samantha Davila gave birth via a planned cesarean section at Hollywood Presbyterian. Grayson was born on Nov. 19 at 8:29 a.m.

a mother who was a “true matriarch”, Barbara first met her husband of 59 years while a student at USC. Martin, a New York-native who graduated from the University Of Pittsburgh Dental School at 21 due to a rapid advancement program in his Brooklyn high school, had come to California after serving as a Lieutenant in the Korean War. Barbara still recalls the moment she set eyes on Martin, who celebrated his 89th birthday this week. The two were paired with different would-be suitors on a dinner date that had Barbara thinking: “Some girls have all the luck.” But it wasn’t long before

up responsibility falls to the City regardless of what the City Council does with the property. At the meeting, Councilmember Lili Bosse and Courier Publisher Marcia Hobbs enthusiastically embraced the efforts. The two are skilled veterans at fundraising and have raised funds for a range of public works to their credit. The fundraising campaign will kick off at Woofstock, the City's biggest doggie event of the year, coming March 6 to Roxbury Park. Hunt-Coffey said that so far, “geo-technical work” has been done on the property, including soil tests, and that an old water well, not on any City documents, had been discovered and capped. Other work included soil samples and studies on drainage, examining the existing walls for soundness and testing light levels.

Martin, the son of a tailor and a Polish mother who had immigrated to America alone at 12 after taking a boat across the Atlantic Ocean, called Barbara and asked her out. Five weeks after their first date, the two were engaged. “I really knew he was nice and that he was my kind of guy,” Barbara shared. While Martin established a successful dental practice in Southgate, the growing Schechter family eventually made their way to Beverly Hills after living in Hollywood and Beverlywood. Martin took up tennis and skiing at 40, eventually becoming very active in the Beverly Hills Tennis Club on Maple Drive. Barbara, who was heavily

involved with PTA while their children, all Beverly Hills High School graduates, were living at home, also volunteered at Beverly Vista. She also joined the Music Center’s Blue Ribbon group, was involved with the founding of both LACMA and MOCA, and is currently a member of the Board of Governors for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. They have been intimately involved with Sinai Temple for 50 years “Ours is the American Dream because what you want from America is to work hard and really succeed,” Barbara said. And for both of them, their five grandchildren are truly their greatest treasures.

The City will have to build drainage, water reclamation and irrigation for future landscaping, based on future donations. A fund in the IT department covers the City’s closed circuit television cameras, an enhancement that will not come from the slender budget for the park. At least three-quarters of the existing cinder-block walls need to be replaced, said HuntCoffey, at an estimated cost of $100,000. The Northeast corner, where there is the least ambient light, needs more lighting, with a single light pole estimated to cost $10-15,000. Pussy and Pooch and Pet Food Express have come forward with doggie bag dispensers; but the park needs water troughs, seating and shade. To make this dog park the kind of park that residents will love, the City is going to need the help of dog lovers everywhere. So far, donations have

been small, said Hunt-Coffey, and fundraising has been underwhelming. But, with a facility in place, "we are willing to take a campaign seriously and drum up some interest." If there is a park to point to, and the needs are evident, it will be easier to provide potential donors with evidence of where their money is going.” At first, said Hunt-Coffey, donor recognition will be in the form of temporary banners. But as the donations come in, a more permanent type of recognition such as plaques, benches or tiles, can be incorporated. Councilmember Lili Bosse, who made the dog park a priority as mayor in 2014, said, "Ask for money by showing a plan, a vision. You have to have a park. Show them 'This is where the space is.’ I will stand up with a microphone and tell everyone," said Bosse. "Let's get a booth!” A booth is expected to be set up next to the information table at the event.

Dr. Talei Excels In The Most Natural-Looking Facelifts, Giving Back To Others lastic surgeon Dr. Ben Talei balances a thriving cosmetic practice at The Beverly Hills Center for Plastic & Laser Surgery with a committed schedule of pro bono and charity work for causes he believes in. In his year and a half in Beverly Hills, Talei’s become the go-to surgeon for facelifts that are “extremely natural, but not so subtle that you don’t notice a difference.” Patients have friends and relatives compliment them; but they can’t tell what the client’s had done. He’s one of fewer than a handful of surgeons using the AuraLyft procedure. “It’s completely different and the best type to do on anybody,” says Talei, and the same technique he uses for reconstruction with cancer patients. “Without the need for fat grafting or fillers it gives the maximum that any surgery can give you in terms of rejuvenation of the face and neck while also providing the absolute most natural outcome from the top of the brow to the bottom of the neck,” says Talei. The proof is in the many beforeand-after photos on his website (http://www.beverlyhillscenter.com) which he designed. The results are so refined, “that nobody, no matter how close they are to the patient, knows they’ve had surgery,” says Talei. He had a mother and daughter-in-law daughter who had no idea they’d both seen him. “The thing that makes me different

P

is how I see things,” says Talei. “I see things other doctors don’t see. I look at a face and understand skin type, shadow, features, harmony and balance.” He completed his residency training in head and neck surgery at Columbia University and Cornell University Medical Centers. Following his residency training, Dr. Talei became one of the few surgeons in the country to complete two separate fellowships in facial plastic & reconstructive surgery, first at the New York Center for Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery, while simultaneously serving as voluntary staff and teacher for residents at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. He then furthered his training at the Vascular Birthmark Institute of New York “My training gives me the ability to do more than other doctors can and keep things more natural; and that’s difficult to do for the face,” says Talei. “Everyone knows how bad plastic surgery can look. Nobody knows with my patients.” He’s also known for rhinoplasty, and his skills with Botox and fillers. “A lot of models and actresses come because I do the most natural filler and Botox in a way that’s extremely consistent and has very little downtime,” says Talei. “This office is a referral center for poorly performed Botox and filler they’ve had somewhere else,” Talei said. (He’s also a sought-after teacher of advanced Botox and filler techniques

Dr. Ben Talei

to nurses and other doctors.) His philanthropic work includes serving on the Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery (CRS) Program for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). A car- and boat-racing enthusiast, Talei has organized track days and events at the marina (he keeps his cigarette boat at Marina del Rey) where attendees commit donations to the NCADV. An avid cook, he’s also hosted lunches and dinners where guests donate online. “I like to give; and I think why not do ‘all this charity stuff,’” is how Talei sums up his giving philosophy. And it’s part of

his life that’s grown. His initial involvement with the NCADV grew from treating domestic-violence victims and then a need to do more. His most ambitious and attentiongetting awareness-raiser was the Drive Against Domestic Violence, across 23 states from New York to California in a “charity Mini-Cooper.” “We had fund raisers in all the big cities as we traveled,” Talei reports He’s a member of the Beverly Hills Health and Wellness Committee and on the board of Children Uniting Nations— which supports orphaned children with mentoring and resources. The involvement supports Talei’s passion for mentoring, one that began in high school and while a student at UCLA and member of COPE (Community Outreach for Prevention and Education). Through HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) and Healing the Children, Talei has taken part in international surgical missions to Vietnam, Guatemala, Honduras and Ecuador to perform ear, lip and facial reconstruction operations on children and adults. On the 10-day trips, Talei may see 120 patients and operate on 60 to 90 patients treating crushed lip and palate, burn scars and disfiguring birth marks. As one of two California specialists in vascular birthmarks, he runs the Beverly Hills Center for Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks, and does pro bono work in that area as well.

Upper Crust Pizzeria Brings Freshness, Community Involvement To BH pper Crust Pizzeria has come to Beverly Hills. With seven locations on the East Coast, the chain opened its first West Coast store on Beverly Hills’ Beverly Drive last week. With its well-attended launch last Friday—”It was packed at 11 a.m. and we still had people here at 1 a.m.,” says founder/owner Jordan Tobins—the chain brings its popular Neapolitan-style thin-crust pizza and philosophy of community involvement. Setting out to prove that pizza can be a healthy and fresh option “and not at all greasy,” says Tobins, Upper Crust creates pizza with “crisp bottom and soft top. We want you to taste the toppings and not all crust.” (Gluten-free and wheat crusts are available.) Customers get fresh dough and fresh sauce, sourced from local tomatoes, produced daily. “It’s time consuming; but it results in a better pizza,” says Tobins. With the open kitchen design and window, customers can see the maker use a fresh ball of dough for each pizza, watch the dough rolled out, the sauce ladled on and the toppings added before the pie is cooked in the gas-fired stove with stone deck. (One stove is reserved for only vegetable and cheese pizzas.) The dine-in, take-out store uses real Parmigiano-Reggiano and mozzarella and imported asiago. “It’s top quality and not fatty,” says Tobins. “We get the best that we can. It’s not a huge secret,” says Tobins. “Fresh just tastes better.”

U

With the ribbon-cutting barely over, Upper Crust Pizzeria has already had a pizza party for the Beverly Hills Fire Department. In back, in white shirts, are owner Jordan Tobins and manager Dennis Silva

The list of toppings has “something for everyone, Tobins says, an extensive list of meats, cheeses, seafood, veggies and more. “We’re all about the customer; you won’t hear us saying ‘no,’ if there’s something people want that we don’t have, we’ll do our best to get it.” Tobins and Manager Dennis Silva advise customers never to reheat leftovers in a microwave, but in an oven or grill, so the crust doesn’t go soggy. The menu features more than pizza, “but we focus on what we do

well,” says Tobins. “We don’t want to have something if we can’t make it perfectly.” So there are salads with fresh romaine (popular slice and salad combos), calzones made from the same fresh pizza dough and baked lasagna (beef or vegetable). The catering menu features sandwich and salad platters (even glutenfree pasta salad) and individual pizzas perfect for kids’ parties. Quickly becoming part of the com-

munity, Upper Crust Pizzeria’s prize donation for the upcoming Backdraft Ball will be a pizza party at the winner’s home or in the new, modern shop. Upper Crust will also be feeding the BHHS basketball team after tonight’s game. Parent Alan Daniels is already a regular and has sons on the team. “They really like our pizza and team members have been visiting the store,” says Tobins. Beverly Hills Little League and area elementary schools are also getting Upper Crust support.

step to get recognition for stunt people. And as of press time, a petition advocating that the Academy recognize the men and women who risk their lives to entertain audiences with an award had garnered 54,756 signatures. Gill, who got his start doubling John Schneider as Bo Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard, underscored just how much work stunt coordinators undertake to ensure performers execute “very calculated risks” to “keep people safe and keep audiences in their seats.” He characterized the job, which includes casting, choreographing stunt sequences, storyboarding and designing costumes, as “scientific and artistic.” Petition creator Amber Gallaway said she was motivated to bring awareness to this glaring slight after reading a 2013 Vanity Fair article titled, “Jason Statham Says Stuntmen Deserve Oscars If ‘Poncy’ Actors Faking It Get Them.”

As the wife of a veteran stunt actor and mother of a 6year-old girl who dreams of being a stunt woman, Gallaway said she believes it’s critical to get recognition for stunt people with an Academy Award. “If my daughter chooses to go into this field, I’d like her to have this as a goal that she can set her eyes on,” she said. Wolfe, who is an Emmywinning Stunt Coordinator and two-time World Taurus Stunt Award Winner, said the longstanding industry bias against stunt doubles is rooted in the “hush-hush” era of the 1940’s and 1950’s when stars had others perform the action sequences and didn’t want the public to know. “Today's filmgoers and filmmakers are well aware that the actor indeed does not do all of their own stunts,” he said. “Isn't it long overdue for the Academy to acknowledge the same?”

years ago. Beyond its size, the tree is also marked by its fecundity; it is the parent for about 500 Coral trees that permeate the median of San Vicente Boulevard into Santa Monica. Virgina Robinson Gardens Superintendent Tim Lindsay described the coral tree in bloom as “SCUBA diving in a tropical sea.”

The tree blooms for roughly two months every year starting in February, which means it is now in true splendor in the gorgeous Beverly Hills garden. Ritter said it is the second tree in Beverly Hills to receive the designation. In 2012, a private garden on Baroda Drive was awarded the Big Tree designation for having the largest Mexican Ash tree in the state.

explained. “Johnny Depp thought he could make one phone call and it would change everything. Martin Scorcese and Robert De Niro thought the same thing. It baffles me why [the Academy’s] not agreeing to this wholeheartedly.” In fact, The Courier was informed by the Academy’s communications department that the story isn’t one “they want to pursue.” “We’ve heard that the Academy, a lot of older members....the old regime...they’ve said, ‘Not on my watch.’ Basically, we’re not going to have stunts,” explained Jeff Wolfe, president of the Stuntmen’s Association Of Motion Pictures. On Wednesday Wolfe and Gill joined over 200 people at a rally outside the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters in Beverly Hills to demand a “stunt coordinator category” as the first

Such evasion appears to conflict with a Jan. 21 meeting between Winnick and Venoco where he said the oil company “represented that it had the financial means to abandon, decommission and remediate the drill site.” According to Winnick, there is no insurance that would pay for the abandonment of the drill site if Venoco goes bankrupt and a bankruptcy judge releases the company from its obligation to pay. “At that time they gave us no reason to believe that they would not be able to do so," Winnick said. Still today, on a daily basis, the City’s one operational oil well sucks roughly 300 barrels of crude oil from beneath the ground at BHHS. For the past several years, Venoco has expressed optimism that the school district would renew its lease, despite consistent assertions from the superintendent and board members to the contrary. “The board has made it very clear, this is not a negotiation, we want them out,” Superintendent Steve Kessler said. Last Thursday, Venoco representatives met with Vinnick and City officials, including City Attorney Larry Weiner, to apprise the interested Beverly Hills parties that the oil company had begun work to put together a timeline and process to remediate the oil well site. “The school district is carefully weighing its options and is currently working with the City to ensure that Venoco will meet its obligations to abandon the site in a timely fashion,” Board President Howard Goldstein said.

PUBLIC NOTICES ORDINANCE NO. 16-O-2699 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS AMENDING BEVERLY HILLS MUNICIPAL CODE SECTIONS 10-3-2804(B) AND 10-32850 REGARDING THE HEIGHT LIMITS FOR ADDITIONS TO LEGALLY NONCONFORMING BUILDINGS IN MULTIPLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL ZONES THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS HEREBY ORDAINS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. On December 10, 2015, the Planning Commission held a duly noticed public hearing after which it adopted Resolution No. 1762, recommending that the City Council amend portions of Title 10 (Planning and Zoning) of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to allow the Planning Commission to issue an R4 Permit that would allow an extension of a legally nonconforming height on a multiplefamily residential development (collectively, the “Amendments”). On February 2, 2016, the City Council held a duly noticed public hearing, received public testimony, and thereafter introduced this Ordinance. Section 2. This Ordinance and the Amendments were assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The City Council finds that adoption of the Amendments will not have a significant environmental impact and is exempt from CEQA pursuant to Section 15305 of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations. The City Council finds that a Class 5 exemption is applicable to the amendment because the amendment results in minor changes in land use limitations pertaining to building height limitations in areas with an average slope of less than 20%, which do not result in any changes to land use or density. In addition, the Planning Commission adopted a Class 1 Categorical Exemption for the multifamily residential project associated with the amendment. Thus, the amendment is exempt from CEQA pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Sections 15305. Section 3. The Amendments are consistent with the objectives, principles, and standards of the General Plan. Specifically, the Amendments are consistent with or advance the following General Plan Policies: LU 2.1 City Places: Neighborhoods, Districts, and Corridors. Maintain and enhance the character, distribution, built form, scale, and aesthetic qualities of the City’s distinctive residential neighborhoods, business districts, corridors, and open spaces; Policy LU 2.4 Architectural and Site Design. Require that new construction and renovation of existing buildings and properties exhibit a high level of excellence in site planning, architectural design, building materials, use of sustainable design and construction practices, landscaping, and amenities that contribute to the City’s distinctive image and complement existing development; Policy LU 5.1 Neighborhood Conservation. Maintain the uses, densities, character, amenities, and quality of the City’s residential neighborhoods, recognizing their contribution to the City’s identity, economic value, and quality of life; Policy LU 5.2 Infill and Replacement Housing. Accommodate new and renovated housing within existing neighborhoods that is consistent with contextual parcel sizes, densities, built form and scale. Section 4. The City Council hereby amends Section 10-3-2804 of Article 28 of Chapter 3 of Title 10 of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to read as follows with all other provisions in 10-3-2804 remaining in effect without amendment: “No building or structure located on a site that is less than or equal to sixty feet (60') in width shall exceed three (3) stories or thirty three feet (33') in height. In addition, no building or structure shall exceed the relevant height limitation imposed by districts A through C as identified on the height district maps adopted by the city council and on file in the office of the city clerk and in the department of planning and community development. A. Height Limits of Districts: The following height limitation districts are hereby established in the multiple-family residential zones of the city:

A public benefit is offered to the City that offsets any long-term impacts to the affordability of the City’s housing inventory that result from the additions. For the purposes of this exception, the ‘business triangle’ shall be defined as the area bounded by the centerline of Wilshire Boulevard, the centerline of Santa Monica Boulevard, south roadway, and the centerline of North Crescent Drive.” Section 5. The City Council hereby amends Section 10-3-2850 of Article 28.5 of Chapter 3 of Title 10 of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to add a new Subsection J. as follows with all other provisions in 10-3-2850 remaining in effect without amendment: “J. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A few weeks ago in a letter to the editor, I warned everyone about a group of terrorist trees lurking about parcels 12-13. They would hide behind each other, striking suddenly at passing unsuspecting vehicles. Thankfully, the brave and courageous property owner, against all odds, removed these terrorist trees, saving innocent vehicles from further attack. The good news is that this was confirmed at last week’s City Council meeting originally scheduled to discuss the role an appointed committee would play in investigating the terrorist tree situation. A group of expert tree surgeons and their nurses interrupted the meeting to help us understand the murderous nature of these trees and how the selfless property owner saved our vehicles from serious injury.. They were introduced by a pair of talking magpies,(Heckle and Jeckle) dressed in black attorney costumes, who paraded pictures of the terrorist trees while praising the builder for his humanitarian efforts. (Who better than birds know the political beliefs of trees). Once again our fair City is made safe through the thankless and heroic efforts of builders and developers. Robert Block ****** As the parent of a sophomore in the cross country/track program at BHHS, I would like to address the inaccurate and misleading statement in the article about the school’s athletic program, that the “once prestigious track program has been in sharp decline since former coach Jeff Fisher (left)” in 2013. Far from being in decline, it remains an outstanding program that is building on its strengths, as stats will attest, and which is run by a team of dedicated and hugely experienced coaches. These include Coach Dwayne Washington, a former division #1 track athlete at UCLA, and Coach Timothy Messina, a former track athlete in the prestigious program at the University of Colorado. They have put in hours and effort way beyond the call of duty and have clearly developed a strong bond with

the athletes, overseen by veteran Coach Howard Edelman, under whose 30 year watch–20 as head coach–at Beverly, the program has continued in strength. One only had to witness the outpourings of heartfelt appreciation for these coaches from the students at the Christmas track/cross country dinner in December to see that they are making a profound, positive impact on these kids, who in turn benefit from being part of a supportive social circle of like minded athletes. (Not to mention that anyone who can inspire our kids to get up at at 7 a.m. on Saturdays and holidays to run for hours, which Coach Messina does, deserves our kudos). The results speak for themselves. At October’s Mount San Antonio College Invitational (Mt Sac), the largest cross country event with around 25,000 participants, the boys varsity team came second with Beverly’s top runner finishing 3rd at 15:54 mins, only the sixth runner in the school’s history to finish in under 16 mins. At the Woodbridge Classic in Orange County in September, with more than 300 schools and with races of up to 300 runners, a Beverly varsity runner took 11th place at 15:45 mins, a school record for the course. Not to mention that the current coaches can, like Fisher, boast of sending two athletes to Division #1 programs next year, this time to Brown and Georgetown universities. Few other high school programs can say as much. And the list goes on. And with the track season upon us, we can only expect more successes. While the numbers are important, equally important is the spirit of the teams, which is high, bolstered by their great coaches, whom the kids clearly adore, and the team camaraderie they foster, which we as parents witness at first hand. The high school’s track/cross country teams and their tireless coaches deserve the community’s continued support and credit. It is well earned. Cartoon for The Courier by Janet Salter

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Feb. 26). You've an eye for beauty, and you'll be surrounded by it this year. Before March is over you'll be unofficially in charge of a project that's even less official, which is officially the best position to be in! A loved one makes you proud in May. In July there will be money from an investment you made long ago. Sagittarius and Virgo adore you. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You can't act effectively unless you understand the situation. For now, take the pressure to act off of yourself completely. What's important is that you learn and become so wise the correct action will flow naturally from you. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Body builders know that the way to get stronger is to lift more weight and do it for more repetitions. That's what you're up to these days: The more you try to do, the more you're able to do. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). In just this one day you could achieve many tasks, but you wisely home in on the single most important, heart-fortifying activity on the list and find profound satisfaction in sticking to that. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Those who laugh too much seem too eager to please, while those who laugh too little are repellent buzz-kills. You'll strike the perfect balance, seeing the humor but not always calling it out. CANCER (June 22-July 22). To be interesting you have to be interested. You're both. In fact, you may want to pull back a tad: As you've probably noticed, you've hooked some amorous attention that may not be entirely appropriate to your current situation. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Don't let yourself become too overwhelmed by the long list of things you'd like to do, accomplish, experience and own. It's quality thoughts that make a quality life, and you can choose those at any moment. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You'll get to the bottom of the problem by sensing when there's more. Mostly this happens when you question people and they seem to be holding back. In most cases, a gentle nudge will be all it takes. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You don't need a four-leaf clover. Your luck is already packed inside your current life. For the most part, you know exactly what your good fortune is and how to use it, but you're overlooking something, too. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Sometimes you need a cynic, a critic or a realist. But not today. It doesn't matter what you're doing; positive thinking and optimism will bring solutions and success. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The only reason you're not achieving a desired outcome is that you still don't believe that it can be, should be and will be yours. Convince your head and your whole being will follow. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Friends will want to visit. Family will want your time. Work will want your attention, too. You feel like blowing everything off just to be with one certain person -and it's not a bad idea! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You notice the various ways people choose to share themselves with you, and you point out what's special and different about each contribution. That's why they feel so spiritually “seen” around you.
