By Laura Coleman At Tuesday’s Beverly Hills Unified School District’s formal Board of Education meeting, newly reinstated Board President Brian Goldberg voted together with newly reinstated Board VP Howard Goldstein and Boardmember Noah Margo to put the kabash on accessing funds that could be used immediately to build safer Beverly Hills schools. “You’re gambling with your children’s lives,” BHUSD’s interim Facilities Director Tim Buresh admonished the board majority who were also voting in
This year, The Courier celebrates 50 years in the community. Throughout the year, we will honor the legacy of excellence in Beverly Hills’ heritage businesses that have called the City their home since 1965 or earlier. By Matt Lopez For someone who doesn’t actually smoke, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone with more knowledge about tobacco, cigars or the hobby of smoking in general than Marsha Kramer. It shouldn’t be a surprise – it’s practically in her blood (the business that is, not the tobacco). Kramer can vividly remember being a child, hanging around her parents’ tobacco shop, or running up and down Santa Monica Boulevard with friends to visit the other local shops in the area. “It was different back then, it was like a little village, you could just walk into any store everyone knew everyone

By Laura Coleman Arnold Seidel who, at age 5, moved into Beverly Hills with his parents in 1931 for the phenomenal schools, still remembers the small town feel that pervaded the centennial City throughout his youth. “We all knew each other,” he recalled. ”This is a small City and I’m so happy to have grown up here rather than any other place.” Among his younger memories is going to the Beverly Hills Post Office, accompanied by his mother, to deposit money in his postal savings account and introducing himself to the teller who responded: “Yes, I know you; I used to deliver your mail.” Born at the Good Samaritan on April 17, 1926, Arnold grew up

By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills Board of Education President Brian Goldberg was cleared Wednesday by the L.A. District Attorney's Office on charges of alleged battery that resulted in his arrest on March 9 outside his Beverly Hills condominium complex. The DA's office launched an investigation into Goldberg's arrest by the Beverly Hills Police Department after the elected official spent the night in the City's jail based on the allegation by a neighbor that he physically pushed her. Goldberg has alleged that BHPD violated his Miranda Rights and that he was a "target" of BHPD Chief Dave Snowden because of statements he had made that questioned the Chief's professional integrity. Goldberg's attorney Anthony V. Salerno stated: "Brian is grateful that the DA conducted a full and fair review of all evidence and decided to clear him. Brian is also grateful to his family, friends, and supporters. I hope that this decision by the DA will undo the unfair damage done to Brian’s reputation.

I am glad the system worked, but I also feel terrible that Brian and his family had to endure this nightmare." Following his arrest, Goldberg temporarily ceded his ceremonial leadership position as Board of Education president to Board VP Howard Goldstein. Just before he was sworn back into his role as Board President at Tuesday’s formal Board meeting, Goldberg took the opportunity to affirm his innocence and launch an attack on the Beverly Hills Police. Homeland Security Pilot Program May Come To Beverly Hills Schools By Laura Coleman Following a meeting last week with representatives from Homeland Security, the Beverly Hills Unified School District and the Beverly Hills Police Department, BHUSD Superintendent Gary Woods confirmed that Beverly Hills schools could be the beneficiary of a new educational endeavor being spearheaded by the Dept. of Homeland Security at UCLA. "I think everyone's very excited,” Woods said of the proposed endeavor where local law enforcement agencies would work together to assist schools in providing a top-notch security program. “Government agencies, schools, police departments, are all coming to-
gether on this...to all keep our kids safe.” “It appears to be cost-neutral,” he added. On Wednesday, Woods shared the news during the district’s second AdHoc Security meeting. At the meeting, Woods confirmed that BHPD’s current drop-off and pickup system at the schools “has been working” ever since BHPD stepped in to fill a security void at the BHUSD. “We continue to focus in on assessing the safety and security measures that are currently in place in the district and identifying any holes that we have and prioritizing a list of potential fixes to the holes,” he said.

School Board Votes To Close Peters Auditorium At BHHS, Auditoriums At Hawthorne and El Rodeo By Laura Coleman While the Beverly Hills Board of Education majority may have said no to accessing Measure E school-building funds at Tuesday’s formal meeting, it united to approve an agenda item requesting the immediate closure due to seismic vulnerability of Peters Auditorium at Beverly Hills High School, in addition to auditoriums at Hawthorne and El Rodeo effective Jan. 1, 2016. “Some Board members continue to have an inability to see the reality for what it is,” said Board member Lisa Korbatov, who voted in favor of no longer allowing the auditoriums’ seating areas to be used with the knowledge that the ceilings were vulnerable to collapse. Board President Brian Goldberg and Board member Lewis Hall also voted in support of closing the three BHUSD auditoriums. “Our buildings are unsafe, our kids need to be removed, and the board has taken action to do that,” added Korbatov. “Board members have a duty first and foremost to safeguard the well
being of our students and staff.” This decision was based on engineering reports regarding the seismic, fire, and other hazards present in various instructional buildings throughout the school district. The built-up plaster ceilings above the auditoriums’ seating areas weigh more than 40 pounds per square foot and are particularly concerning because of the significant risk of injury. “The auditorium seating areas at Peters, Hawthorne, and El Rodeo are of particular concern because of the potential for a partial or full ceiling collapse in an earthquake,” Superintendent Gary Woods said. These conditions do not apply to the Salter Theater at BHHS or to the auditoriums at Beverly Vista and Horace Mann. Portions of the auditoriums not at risk, such as the stages, may continue to be used for instructional purposes. The district is now in the process of getting an additional opinion from a licensed structural engineer to verify the current recommendation. Mayor Julian Gold Recognizes Mason Sommers, Who Saved His Life, For Donate Life Month By Victoria Talbot
Mayor Julian Gold’s signature initiative this year will be his appeal to residents to “Step Up.” To illustrate, at his installation, Gold was sworn in via video by Darrell Weinberg, the man who gave him a stem cell donation that saved Gold’s life in 2006. Weinberg launched the Mayor’s Stepping Up campaign, bringing attention to Gold’s miraculous journey from near-death to becoming the healthy Mayor of Beverly Hills. Last Tuesday evening Gold had another opportunity to express his gratitude by making a presentation to Dr. Mason Sommers for Donate Life Month. Like Gold, Sommers is a transplant recipient. As a student at Beverly Hills High School he
was the first person to be saved by paramedics in 1971 after two cardiac arrests. Today, Sommers, who went to Hawthorne Elementary as well, is past president and serves on the Board of Directors of the Maple Counseling Center. A psychologist in a private practice, Sommers has worked in Beverly Hills for 35 years. But perhaps his most important personal mission is to encourage everyone to sign up to become an organ and tissue donor. Then, people such as Mayor Gold and Mason Sommers, Ph.D. can become healthy and in turn, give back to their communities. Donate Life saves lives by inspiring people to sign up to become donors. Sign up at the Department of Motor Vehicles or visit www.donatelifecalifornia.org

CHLA Dedicates Margie And Robert E. Petersen Rehabilitation Center Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has announced the opening and dedication of the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation Rehabilitation Center honoring the couple’s two late sons, Bobby and Richie Petersen, who died in a 1975 plane crash. Late last month patients and staff moved in to the new 22,000-squarefoot, safari-themed facility. “Our rehabilitation unit serves approximately 200 patients each year. This state-of-the-art facility allows us to serve more patients, but we can now care for our patients with the healing environment they deserve and provide our staff with the therapeutic amenities to match the excellent level of the care they provide,” says Richard D. Cordova, FACHE, CHLA’s president/CEO. “The opening of the center is the realization of the Petersens’ desire to help children overcome devastating illnesses and accidents so they can get back to their families and do the things they love to do,” says GiGi Carleton, president of the foundation, which made a transformative gift of $5 million to support the hospital’s mission of delivering innovative patient care. The Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at CHLA is a major referral center for challenging cases that cannot be treated at other Southern California hospitals. The division provides coordinated care through its work with specialists in medicine, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, hearing and speech therapy, social work, Child Life and other professional specialties. This team treats children with some of the most complex and diverse diagnoses, including stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries, brain tumors, bone tumors, seizures, spinal disorders and rheumatologic disorders. “The sooner a child begins the coordinated, specialized rehabilitative care offered at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the better his or her chances are for recovery and a return to a happy and healthy life. The Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation Rehabilitation Center will give a patient access to the latest in rehabilitative equipment and care, as well as a family-friendly space that allows the child’s mind and soul to thrive,” says Kevan Craig, D.O., chief of the Division of Rehabilitative Medicine. The Petersen Rehabilitation Center is one of the largest acute pediatric rehabilitation centers in the country. It has 22 patient beds and features 16 private rooms, three semiprivate rooms, and two medical isolation rooms for patients with fragile immune systems. Patients admitted to this unit stay anywhere from one to five months while they receive intensive therapy. Families often drive long distances to be with their child during care, so the new facility will honor a family’s needs for privacy while helping them maximize their interaction as a family during patients’ recoveries. Every patient room will include family sleep areas, a bathroom and shower, free wireless internet and the GetWellNetwork®, an interactive patient care system developed for pediatric patients and their families that lets them learn and play while in the hospital. The late Margie Petersen of Beverly Hills was a former CHLA regent and member of the hospital’s board of trustees.

MEET THE MAYOR (Continued from page 4)
“Most of our lifestyle satisfaction comes from things which are within the purview of local government,” said Mayor Gold. “Are our streets safe and clean? Are our parks beautiful and the programs that are available robust? Are our trees well cared for? Each area of this City has issues specific to it, which we need to know in order to improve the residential quality of life. In visiting each area, it is my goal to hear the residents and businesses and to try to fix those things which are not perfect.” Beverly Hills, despite its notoriety, remains a small town to its residents. But what worries residents in one section may have no affect on residents in another section.
To better understand their challenges, Mayor Gold has pledged to visit each sector in turn, listening to grievances and meeting the people who live, work and play there. Mayor Gold is reaching into the community for input to improve the City. Some City staffers will also be on hand to listen and answer questions. Future opportunities are being planned to Meet the Mayor. They will include visits to the Trousdale area, Hillside north of Sunset Blvd., the Central Flats, the South West and South East areas, and the north and south business communities. There will also be a meeting targeting multi-family residents and renters. Everyone is welcome to every meeting. For more information on The Nosh call 310-271-3730.

Choosing the Right Memory Care Program Belmont Village Senior Living offers tips for finding the right fit Choosing a senior living community with the right memory support program is an important family decision. Not all memory programs are equal and finding the right fit makes a big difference in quality of life. Belmont Village recommends asking questions and observing programs to learn more about staff and training, resident group structure, program objectives and adaptability, environment and evaluation. “Watch to see if staff members have an aptitude for compassionate care. In other words, do they see the world through the eyes of the resident when problem-solving?” said Beverly Sanborn, vice president of program development for Belmont Village Senior Living. “Ask about teamwork among staff members. Staff should be curious about what is motivating resident behaviors to help guide them toward a positive solution, rather than reactive or judgmental.” Ideal programs have a specially trained director and a nurse on staff 24/7 to manage cognitive and health needs. Sanborn recommends observing a resident group to see the program and the environment first-hand. “Small groups of residents with similar ability levels work best to build confidence and support successful outcomes,” said Sanborn. “Memory programs need to be highly enjoyable to maintain interest, but they should also be therapeutic, with measurable objectives. Activities should be neither over nor under-stimulating and should offer something new to the brain and a mental stretch – what we call the just right challenge.” Finally, Sanborn says to ask about
program evaluation. “Programs need on-going evaluation to measure and maintain effectiveness. This requires consistent data collection and analysis, using recognized and accepted measurement tools, to determine what’s working and what’s needed. The best
programs are evidence-based, which means they’re evaluated and adapted based on resident outcomes.” In 2005, Belmont Village launched Circle of Friends® for residents with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and early-stage memory loss. Residents in the Circle of Friends program remain in their assisted living apartments and lead purposeful lives through the 7-day-aweek program of research-based group activities led by a dedicated, specially trained staff. For information about Belmont Village’s Circle of Friends® and other dedicated memory care programs, please call one of their Los Angeles communities: Hollywood 323-874-7711, Encino 818-788-8870 or Westwood 310-4757501. www.belmontvillage.com.
Love is Beautiful at Any Age At Westwood Village By Ferri Fathi, Executive Director at Vintage Westwood In my years as Executive Director of senior living communities, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting residents and families from all walks of life – each with unique stories of adventure, and experience, and some times even romance. One such story involves Claire Frank (88) and Bob Lezin (83), two lovebirds who met at our Vintage Westwood community. As a lifelong pianist, Claire is a lover of all things musical. And, since moving to our community in 2012, she’s been a regular patron of our weekly entertainment events. Though a vibrant woman at heart, she confesses that she was lonely after losing her husband of 37 years. But, in August of 2013 things began to change with the arrival of Bob – word of his musical talent quickly spread and, inevitably, the new resident caught Claire’s interest. “I was drawn to him because he was a musician,” she explains. “After we talked about our love for music [Bob is an accomplished Violinist]… I thought to myself, he isn’t bad looking either!” The two were inseparable from that moment on and, finally, one day they decided it was time to move-in together.
Though, they don’t recall the exact moment the decision was made, they admit that their children’s support was what sealed the deal. The lovebirds now enjoy each other’s company in the comfort of their shared home, where they spend their time listening to music while holding hands and sipping on a glass of wine… or doing other things, which they will readily admit – though I insist that they not go into the details. And, when they’re not home, they go on adventures – like last year’s cruise through Scandinavian countries, and this year’s upcoming cruise to Italy. I fondly think of their heartwarming story as I see them walking around the community holding hands. It reminds me that no matter the age or circumstance, it is love, friendship and companionship – like the kind that Bob and Claire share – that keeps us fulfilled and gives our lives greater meaning and purpose. It brings me joy to think of how this story has been repeated many times over at our Vintage Westwood community. And, with the release of the new film Age of Love, it’s been wonderful to see how this story is reflective of the needs and desires of most seniors.

Through The Gates At Virginia Robinson Stray Cat Alliance Will Help With Your Gardens: Spring Vegetable Garden Tips Spring Cleaning Discards GROWING YOUNG GARDENERS–Each month, the historic vegetable garden on the Robinson estate is visited by Southland elementary school children who tour the gardens with trained docents who instruct them on the basics of growing and eating their own vegetables.
By Virginia Robinson Gardens Superintendent Tim Lindsay and Founder Joan Selwyn One cloudless day in 1911, three years before Beverly Hills became a City, a young couple discovered a knoll with extraordinary views. From this hilltop, Virginia and Harry Robinson could see all the way to Catalina and to the snowcapped mountain of San Jacinto. Grocery stores, as we know them today, did not begin to develop until 1930s and 1940s. So like many Americans, the Robinsons grew most of the fresh produce needed to sustain their family and a staff of 21. The land was rich and fertile and it produced fresh vegetables all year long in the region’s mild Mediterranean climate. Cultivating a vegetable garden was considered a patriotic act during World War II and the government encouraged citizens to plant “Victory Gardens.” One of the last residences in Beverly Hills to maintain a “Victory Garden” belonged to the legendary actor Jimmy Stewart. Today, first lady Michele Obama's
“Eat Brighter Campaign” has renewed the conversation about the type of food eaten, emphasizing the use of more fresh home grown fruits and vegetables in our national diet. She sees the first family's vegetable garden as a way to call the nation’s attention to a national issue--the connection between the quality of our food and the health of our children. Tips on Planting Your Spring Vegetable Garden: In a sunny area, prepare the soil by digging and turning it over with a spade. If compost is available, spread it evenly over the soil before turning the soil with the spade. Use a bow rake to make level and smooth. 1. Plant cauliflower, snow peas and broccoli from color packs (six pack of seedlings that are ready to plant), an alternative to starting plants from seeds. 2. Plant seeds of your favorite lettuce and kale 3. Plant in rows, radishes, turnips, beets, and carrots 4. Plant crops in three -week intervals, so you can extend production into early summer 5. Water vegetables when plants show signs of wilt. In summer about every third day, in winter rarely, if rains are regular. Built in 1911, the Robinson House and Gardens is listed nationally and locally as a historic landmark. Nestled on 6.5 landscaped acres in the heart of Beverly Hills, it is open by appointment for public visitation. To schedule a guided tour of the house and gardens or a school tour, call Vicky at 310-550-2087.

being an good technology broker-dealer of stocks and bonds is simple: check the intrinsic rate of security. If it’s a good value company–buy and if it’s too high, don’t buy. In a 1950s’ party, he met his wifeto-be Joan, a school teacher who later became City treasurer for Beverly Hills. He said the party was distinguished both by the fact that he met his wife of 58 years (and counting) despite it was an absolute dud as far as parties go. “I’ll tell you how to give a lousy party–you take a room and put a card table in the middle,” he described, recalling how he and Joan were on either sides of the room before he approached her and eventually asked to take her home. In 1970 his wife joined the company, just before Arnold’s father passed away. Later, in 1986, his daughter-in-law also joined Morton Seidel & Co. In July 1998, Arnold moved the firm to its current Beverly Hills location on Wilshire. Their two sons, David and Craig, both went to Beverly Vista and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. And one of their three grandchildren went to Horace Mann, in addition to BHHS. Over the years, Arnold, who graduated from Team Beverly Hills in 1999, said he has gotten more involved in charity. He recalled the nearby Kerr’s Sporting Goods carried everything eye-opening to a young boy, including guns. After graduating from El Rodeo and Beverly Hills High School, Arnold attended USC where he received a degree in zoology and chemistry. At the time he thought he wanted to be a doctor. Beverly Hills Police Arrest Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills Star Kim Richards By Victoria Talbot In an early morning incident at The Beverly Hills Hotel, BHPD responded to a report of a possible fight from hotel security involving The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kim Richards. Security reported that Richards, who has battled substance abuse issues on the show, was involved in a disturbance at a hotel restaurant, where she was allegedly intoxicated.
Hotel security “made multiple requests for Ms. Richards to leave the property,” according to BHPD Public Information Officer Lt. Lincoln Hoshino. Richards then requested to use the restroom and “refused to leave the property.” After hotel security made a private persons arrest, BHPD arrived and took Richards into custody. “Richards was displaying symptoms of alcohol intoxication, including slurred speech
and belligerent, insolent behavior, cursing at the officers and passively resisting arrest,” he said. After being transported for booking, “Richards kicked one of the officers in the leg.” He was not hurt. Richards was released at 10:30 a.m. and issued a citation for public intoxication, trespassing, resisting an officer and battery on a police officer. She is due to appear in LAX Superior Court June 10.

The information contained in the Prime Source memo, the Prime Source reports, and the verbal warnings made to the board by Prime Source, likely trigger the Board’s duty to act to avoid exposing it to personal liability.” Seven years have now passed since Beverly Hills voters authorized a total sale of $334 million of Measure E bonds to fund the repair, reconstruction or replacement of seismically-impaired school buildings. Since then, the Board has learned that it will require approximately $450 million for all five schools to complete necessary seismic and rehabilitation needs throughout the school district. The sale of the remaining Measure E bonds is controver-

Goldberg, Goldstein and Margo are all banking on voters approving a replacement bond in June 2016 in excess of $350 million. In contrast, Board members Lisa Korbatov and Lewis Hall, who on Tuesday voted in support of allowing the district access to the remaining Measure E funds immediately, prefer to tap Measure E and then ask voters to approve approximately $140 million in a new bond in June 2016. So far, the district has sold $117 million of the bonds with another $34 million that can be sold without a tax rate increase.
its first year in a slightly different location; four doors down to be exact. The larger location opened the first year Kramer was in business, and Marsha said her father finally decided to make the move after a little push from one of his best customers – Father Dempsey. Dempsey had been assigned as a priest Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills and said he was used to buying his tobacco from Dunhill (a major tobacco company), but that he would prefer to buy locally from Kramer if he could make a comparable blend. Allen Kramer did just that, creating what is currently known to tobacco enthusiasts across the nation as “Father Dempsey’s Blend.” “Father Dempsey gave my dad the courage to pack up and move into the location we are at now,” Marsha said. “Dad had been toying with the idea but he just needed that push.” Father Dempsey’s Blend is a smooth and full-bodied Latakia-based blend - one of
only two that Allen Kramer ever named after an actual person. The other is the Danny Kaye blend. Marsha’s parents ran the shop together until Allen died in 1973. Tina continued running things until her death in 1999, and Marsha and husband Jim took over from there to carry on the family tradition. Marsha runs the shop while moonlighting at her “day job” as an actress. One of her biggest roles was in the broadway adaption of Peter Pan. She has either appeared in, or done voice over work for films and TV shows such as The 2013 adaption of The Great Gatsby, The Lego Movie, Modern Family, Days Of Our Lives, Malcolm In The Middle and Frasier, among many others. At the end of the day, her heart still belongs to Kramers Tobacco and Pipe Shop. “I just love it,” Kramer said. “It means so much to me because it meant so much to my parents and I’m glad we can keep the tradition going.”

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Smiles About Making Smiles By Victoria Talbot
Dr. Ben Talei is no ordinary Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. He is probably one of the happiest men in the world, not simply because he has a lucrative practice and lives and works in one of the world’s most desirable cities. This week, he is heading to Vietnam to make prosthetic ears for children born without them with Healing the Children. Later this year, he will treat children born with a cleft pallet with HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles). And sometime this week, he will help a person to achieve a long-desired dream to erase a birthmark or a scar that has defined their life. He will save a child from a lifetime of shame. He will erase years of suffering from someone’s face and coax a hidden smile to life. In between, he will expertly erase years, wiping away the careworn signs of time. He will perform a facelift by lifting the facial muscle itself and replacing it where it was before time and gravity dragged it down. The results will look more natural, defy reversal, and have more impact than skin that is stretched and pulled tight, because Talei lifts the muscle itself. Last fall, Dr. Ben Talei and his brother Nathan Talei, drove their Mini Cooper, covered in decals touting domestic vio-
lence awareness, across the country to raise funds and awareness for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery’s Face to Face Domestic Violence Program. Women trapped in the cycle don’t know there are many organizations there to help. In Vietnam, he says,“the kids have lived with the condition for 8 years. We can’t do the procedure earlier. They are so happy when they see their new ears!” Talei’s Beverly Hills Center for Plastic and Laser Surgery focuses on facial rejuvenation and minimally invasive procedures. They perform facelift, rhinoplasty, eyelid rejuvenation, and facial reconstruction. He also works with vascular and congenital anomalies, one of the few surgeons in the country to have pursued two fellowships at Columbia and Cornell Universities and Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. A native of Los Angeles, Talei is on staff at Ronald Reagan UCLA, Santa Monica UCLA, Cedars-Sinai and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. A lecturer and teacher, his heart is truly in working with others. Beverly Hills Center is located at 120 Spalding Dr., #236, 310-288-0641.

Multiple experts have since told the BHUSD Board of Education that in the event of an earthquake above 3.5 on the Richter scale, depending on its epicenter, those 14 buildings are at risk of major structural damage including collapse. In that case, serious injury and even death can be expected. In anticipation of last night’s vote, BHUSD General Counsel Vince Ewing emailed all boardmembers a letter warning them of their personal liability for failure to act in response to a recommendation made by Buresh’s consulting firm Prime Source. The report states: “Board members may be exposed to personal liability if they receive information related to the unsafe condition of school buildings and do not take reason-

else,” Kramer said. It was only natural that Kramer, an only child, would eventually take over the family business. Today, she owns and operates Kramers Pipe and Tobacco Shop with her husband Jim Keller, which has been in Beverly Hills since 1949. The family business actaully started in Chicago, Illinois, where Marsha’s parents Allen and Tina Kramer owned a tobacco shop on the borth side of Chicago until World War II. After the war, the couple vacationed in Beverly Hills and “immediately fell in love with the weather,” Kramer said. It was decided then that the couple would relocate and open their business in Beverly Hills. Kramer himself built all the knotty pine cabinets and fixtures in the shop, including a walk-in humidor. Kramers Pipe and Tobacco Shop has been in the same location for 65 years, but Kramer said the truth is the business actually spent part of

Beverly Hills High School Sports Roundup
By Matt Lopez Beverly Hills High’s boys basketball team was showered with postseason praise over the last few weeks after one of the most successful seasons in program history. On the heels of a CIF Southern Section Division 3A championship, it was no surprise to see Arizona-bound center Chance Comanche named CIF-SS Division 3A Player of the Year. It was naturally also not a surprise to see BHHS coach Jarvis Turner named CIF-SS Division 3A Coach of the Year when the awards were announced in late March. Joining Comanche and
Baseball Beverly Hills High’s baseball team dropped its Ocean League opener to El Segundo on Tuesday. The Normans hung tight with the Eagles in the Ocean League game at BHHS until a five-run sixth inning propelled El Segundo ahead for good. Rigo Fernandez got the start for the Normans and allowed seven runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking six. The Normans’ bats were unable to get going against El Segundo starter Willem Mostert, who threw six innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits. Beverly Hills (10-7, 0-1) was playing El Segundo in a rematch Thursday at Stevenson Field. Softball Beverly Hills High’s softball team got its Ocean League slate off on the wrong foot on Thursday with a 10-0 loss to El Segundo. It was not the best outing for the BHHS offense, as the Normans racked up just one hit on the afternoon. Lena Shapiro was the lone BHHS player to get a hit. Maytal Sarafian drew a walk. Shyra Costas got the start against a difficult El Segundo offense and allowed five earned runs and three strike-
Turner on the All-CIF Division 3A team was junior Denzel Holt. CIF-SS Div. 3A Player of the Year was one of just several honors Comanche racked up after his stellar senior season. In addition, Comanche was named The Ocean League MVP. His counterpart and future PAC-12 rival, Lawndale’s USC-bound center Chimezie Metu, won the Most Outstanding Player award for the league. Jarvis Turner was named Coach of the Year in the Ocean League. In addition to those honors, three Normans were named to the All-Ocean
League team. Seniors Trevor Bergher and Jalen Sands made the first team and senior Ryan Manoocheri made the second team. Additionally, Turner has been tapped to coach the Southern Section boys team in Saturday’s annual Collision AllStar Game at 7 p.m. at L.A. Southwest College. The annual all-star extravaganza pits the best players from the CIF Southern Section against the best from the CIF L.A. City Section. On the girls side, Beverly Hills High’s Jessica Melamed earned a spot on the All-Ocean League girls first team.
BEVERLY HILLS IRON MAN — Anton Saleh, BHHS 2013, recently competed in Ironman 70.3 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, finishing 728 out of a field of 1573 professional and amateur athletes. His time was 6 hours and 10 minutes.
BIG SPIKE — Beverly Hills High’s boys volleyball team earned a thrilling 3-2 win over Santa Monica on April 17. The Normans won 26-24, 16-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-11. Pictured above: Brian Masjedian leaps to spike the ball. Photo by David Berke
Saleh was one of the 10 Duke University students officially representing the school over their spring break on March 15th. He began his involvement in triathlon as a college freshman mostly for the team athletic experience but also as a way to manage stress and the symptoms of his lymphoma. (He was diagnosed in 2009 with Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma and vigorous, outdoor exercise has been an essential component of managing medication side effects since then.)
LACROSSE CLINICS — Pictured left: Beverly Hills High School girls varsity lacrosse players compete in a match against Marlborough. BHHS lacrosse will be sponsoring and hosting three free clinics. On April 18 and 25 from 10 a.m. to noon, Catch Lacrosse will run a clinic for middle school boys and girls. On April 26 from 4-6 p.m., L.A. Wave, a competitive girls club program, will run a clinic for girls from grades 4-12. For more information, e-mail susankolko@hotmail.com.
outs on six hits. Track & Field Amanda Block was the only BHHS athlete invited to compete at last weekend’s prestigious Arcadia Invitational, and she certainly proved why she got the invite with her performance. Block took fifth place in the girls varsity pole vault with a leap of 11-3, just missing the mark of her school record of 11-4. The top five finisher medalled. Block will again compete on Saturday at the Mt. SAC relays. Boys lacrosse The Beverly Hills High boys lacrosse team lost a narrow 14-10 match to Downey on April 13. Devon Hernandez led the way for the Normans, who fell to 3-8, 1-3 on the season, with seven goals. He had nine shots on goal in the loss. Zach Antin added two goals and Kyle Khalili had one goal for the Normans. Alex Legget had 12 saves in goal for BHHS. That loss came on the heels of a 14-3 loss to Dana Hills on April 1. Eli Soroudi, Franklin Horowitz and Sammy Edwards each scored a goal for BHHS in the loss at BHHS. Legget had six saves.
Next Week In BHHS Sports Baseball Beverly Hills High’s baseball team plays at Hawthorne on April 23. Softball BHHS hosts Lawndale on April 21 and plays at Santa Monica on April 23.
Boys volleyball BHHS has a busy weekend, playing at Antelope Valley on April 18 at 11 a.m., hosting El Segundo on April 21, playing at Ojai Valley on April 22 and at El Segundo on April 23.

Anyone who has spent even a small amount of time in the Coachella Valley knows that it’s not just mountains which surround us. We are also surrounded by an abundance of art, thanks in large part to the Palm Springs Art Museum, the largest cultural institution in the Desert. Therefore, it was only natural that “Gala 2015,” the museum’s season-defining fundraiser where colorful designer gowns by artists such as Dior, Valentino and vintage Bob Mackie swirled among the more static works on display. The event honored the work and accomplishments of Dr. Steven A. Nash, who recently retired as the museum’s first JoAnn McGrath executive director.
GALA 2015–At the Palm Springs Art Museum fundraiser, were (from left): honoree Dr. Steven Nash and his wife, Carol; The Courier’s Frances Allen and Michael Childers.
Flawlessly produced by Co-Chairs Roberta Holland and Chuck Hilliar, it featured an active cocktail hour and elegant postperformance dinner in the museum’s atrium. In between, the party was moved to the museum’s Annenberg Theater for an on-stage film tribute to Dr. Nash followed with live, in-concert performances by Broadway stars Jarrod Spector (Frankie Valli in more than 1,500 performances of Jersey Boys), and Jessie Mueller, star of Beautiful, The Carol King Musical. Never static, the Palm Springs Art Museum has recently announced a role as an activation site for the launch of Los Angeles-based artist Zoe Crosher’s chapter of “The Manifest Destiny Billboard Project” on Interstate 10. The project is a series of artist-produced billboards and ‘activations’ that will unfold along Interstate 10 from Florida to California, with Crosher’s work to be featured at the museum as well as on the westbound side of the I-10 freeway in Desert Center, east of Indio. To sustain itself, however, the museum needs the support of its community and many generous donors and underwriters. (Helene Galen just announced she is underwriting free admission to the public at The Galen, the museum’s Palm Desert facility that features rotating exhibitions and special collection). It is a people’s museum which is why its 10th annual membership drive and “Meet the Museum” party will be held on April 24, during the Desert’s yearly bacchanalia known as the White Party Weekend, with guests encouraged to come in “Alice in Wonderland” attire. Museum membership perks include one year of free admission of all museum locations, including the newly-opened Architecture and Design Center; member-only invitations to exhibition openings; special events; discounts at the museum store and the café; select theater performances; its quarterly magazine; and use of its library … and more. MARCIA WILSON HOBBS EXCLUSIVE TO THE COURIER: Upon accepting the nomination for his return to Board of Education president on Tuesday night, Brian Goldberg read a stunning letter asserting that he was targeted by BHPD Chief Dave Snowden and unjustly arrested. Below and on Page 31 is his letter in full, which The Courier has not independently verified. When I first ran for the school board, I was a bit liaison meeting where the issue of school security, naïve and idealistic. I believed if I did my homework, school resource officers and EBI were discussed. I made a compelling argument for or against a certain remember making it very clear that my first choice was position my colleagues and the community would be for the City of Beverly Hills to restore the SRO proopen to what I had to say and seriously consider my gram. My suggestion was categorically rejected by Chief Snowden as not possible and not even on the positons and ideas. Once being elected, I soon realized that was not table for discussion. After Snowden’s rejection of the the case. I also learned early on that although Beverly idea of restoring the SRO program, the conversation Hills is one of the most recognizable “cities” in the turned to EBI, Inc. and the City potentially covering world, it is still a very small town and local politics is, part of the cost in providing these outside private EBI, like any other very small town, very personal and very Inc. services. Chief Snowden recommended that BHUSD expand the current contract with EBI, Inc. ugly. Soon I upset very powerful people and interests. from one to two armed officers at Beverly Hills High Through these experiences I learned that people School. President Noah Margo brought this proposal for they are and will fight to maintain their own particular interest. I also learned that if you follow the money expanded services and fees back to the full board and you will understand the motivation for people and it were voted on at our Aug. 2014 board meeting. So bear with me as I connect the dots on EBI, Inc. vate email message on Facebook from Chief Snowden Chief Snowden, Capt. Mark Rosen, Lt. Lincoln “Hi Brian. From what I am hearing you and I need to Hoshino, Judie Fenton (president and founder of FTA), talk.” I responded at 11:30 a.m. “About?” Steven Fenton (former board member and co-author of Chief Snowden responded at 2:58 p.m. “About a book with Carter Paysinger) and Josh Gross (publishyour comments about me making a backroom deal er of the Beverly Hills Weekly). I have been a vocal advocate and thorn in the City with Jake Manaster on EBI.” At this point I was taking this exchange as a threat Council’s and BHPD’s side with regard to restoring the School Resource Officer Program at our five school and was concerned. I responded at 2:58 p.m.: “Not my issue. Gary said sites. Chief Snowden and Capt. Rosen have been the most vocal opponents of reinstating this program. The he brought up to you based on what he was told and City Council has relied on the chief’s opposition to you told him nothing to it. I have never said or implied reinstating the SRO program as the rational for not anything about you and Jake but happy to meet if you reinstating this very successful program that was in need or want to.” After this unusual message exchange with Chief existence many years at our school sites. On the advice and recommendation of the Chief Snowden, I Snowden I decided to look deeper into the allegations voted to hire EBI, Inc.–a firm fronted by John of Chief Snowden having a financial interest in EBI. McLaughlin, a former Snowden employee when he Inc. As president of the Board of Education, I sent a was police chief in Costa Mesa, and Lt. This letter was eventually pubtime period of the contract with BHUSD even after EBI, lished by The Courier. Following the publication, the Beverly Hills Inc. had disclosed to the district that it was in financial trouble and could not perform on the expanded serv- Weekly in its Feb. 5 edition had an interview with ice contract Snowden had recommended. Chief Chief Snowden titled “Setting the Record Straight.” In Snowden’s EBI pay was not disclosed to the BHUSD it, Snowden admits he was a paid consultant to EBI, Inc and, in fact, he lied to Dr. Gary Woods when asked and that City Manager Jeff Kolin knew and approved it about being paid and lied in Facebook messages to me (news to anyone on the Board of Education or the public) but stated that Snowden stopped receiving comand in interviews with the Beverly Hills Weekly. On July 24, 2014 I participated in a City/school pensation from EBI, Inc. as of June 30, 2014 well
BEVERLY HILLS before he advocated for an increase in services and revenue for EBI, Inc. A few weeks after that Weekly article ran, I received a copy of a check made out to Dave Snowden for over $2,500 dated Oct. 14, 2014 from a person with the same name as the VP of EBI, Inc. Lies #2 and #3 by Chief Snowden. First lie that Snowden was not receiving compensation from EBI, Inc.; the second that he followed City Code; and third that he stopped receiving compensation from EBI as of June 30, 2014. I forwarded a copy of the check to Mayor Bosse and to Vice Mayor Gold, cc’ing BHUSD VP Howard Goldstein, Dr. Gary Woods and Vince Ewing, general counsel for BHUSD. On Feb. 26, 2015, I received an email confirmation from Vince Ewing that Mr. Ewing had forwarded this check on to the District Attorney’s office. I believe at this point in time Chief Snowden is aware that the DA was looking into his involvement with EBI. Inc., his violation of City Code and possible inaccurate filings on his Form 700 disclosures. In addition it has been reported that Chief Snowden spent several nights a week at the home of Paula Meehan Kent, who bought The Beverly Hills Courier shortly before her death and which is now owned by her estate. It is reported that Snowden would spend several nights a week at her home, free of charge. Some 12 days after sending a copy of the check made out to Dave Snowden, I was arrested for an alleged misdemeanor simple battery based on a citizen complaint. I have since learned that BHPD practice is not to arrest but to issue a citation and release with a court date to appear, similar to a moving violation, and a citation was eventually issued to me. It was not until a more senior officer, I believe a sergeant, arrived on the scene that the decision was made by him to place me under arrest based on a request for a citizen’s arrest. Even though there was video evidence available to the officers for review and I had made multiple request for the officers to review the video, they decided to place me under arrest. I was processed, photographed and fingerprinted at the BHPD and held nearly 12 hours on a citation release misdemeanor citizen’s arrest. Now here is how we connect the dots. I was released just after 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday March 10. The only press that was directly contacted was Josh Gross the publisher of the Beverly Hills Weekly, who on Feb. 5 had run the interview with Chief Snowden, titled “Setting the Record Straight” where he lied about his compensation from EBI, Inc. It is alleged that Steven Fenton is a financial investor in the Weekly. This I cannot confirm but do know from first hand knowledge that Fenton and Gross are very close friends. Steven Fenton is the son of Judie Fenton, the founder/president of FTA, and Chief Snowden’s wife Ellyn is a paid employee listed on the FTA Web site. Coincidence? Capt. Mark Rosen oversees the detectives at BHPD; Det. Schwartz has been assigned to my case. BHPD did not request all the video available from the multiple surveillance cameras which recorded the alleged incident, I had to seek permission from the homeowners association and pay the security firm a fee to come to the building and make an official copy of the various feeds and cameras pertaining to the alleged incident. My defense attorney had to then make this available to BHPD. Had I not, I do not believe BHPD would have asked for it. Remember this video was available for review the night of the alleged incident. In support of my continued efforts for full disclosure as soon as BHPD concludes its investigation, I will make all the video available for the public to review through my Goldberg Perspective. If you read Lt. Lincoln Hoshino’s press release, he violates BHPD policy and practice by making affirmative statements regarding my guilt and that my statements to police were inconsistent. I did not give a statement to police that evening–was never read my Miranda rights–and no statement was taken that evening. I requested that the police review the video. I also requested that this woman be arrested for assault, battery and false imprisonment. It was suggested to me by the officer originally on the scene that if I press charges and she presses charges that we both would end up having to be arrested and usually in a situation of “he said–she said” if both parties request arrest, both parties generally chose to drop the issue and the police move on.
BEVERLY HILLS Officers have reported to me that at the morning meetings on Tuesday, March 10, the command staff was high fiving and making comments that “we got that son of a bitch and the Board of Education.” It has been reported to me Chief Snowden has been telling people that: “Goldberg is guilty and really beat that woman up.” Individuals are willing to testify under oath to these statements being made by Snowden. I ask the City Council: “How am I supposed to trust a process when your chief of police is prejudging an ongoing investigation? And what happened to innocent until proven guilty?” According to the BHPD web page, the values of Beverly Hills Police Department include: •Respect: We value the rights of all people and promote mutual trust in our community •Proactive: We work collaboratively to fulfill our paramount duty–the protection of life and property, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension and prosecution of criminals and the relentless pursuit of justice. •Organizational Excellence: We value our employees and strive for personal and professional excellence through training and teamwork in an open and innovative environment. •Leadership: We empower and motivate our employees to lead through continuous improvement, creative problem solving and proactive thinking. •Integrity: We value honor and truthfulness and hold ourselves to the highest standards of moral and ethical conduct. •Spirit of Partnership: In connection with our community and other City Departments, we are dedicated to demonstrating a spirit of partnership through compassion, enhancing the quality of life for everyone. How would anyone get a fair review of the facts under these circumstances? How is the behavior of Chief Snowden in particular but also his command staff Capt. Rosen and Lt. Hoshino in line with the values of Beverly Hills Police Department? How can the City Council do nothing? It was bad enough when I was being personally attacked and defamed but Chief Snowden and his cronies have now deprived me of my freedom. And why? Not because they believe I committed simple battery, they have the video, the woman and her family making these false accusations is known to the department. The police have responded on numerous occasions to reports of domestic disturbances, they had access to the videos that night. The property manager lives in the building, is friends with the family in question, and was in the lobby with the family the entire time the police were taking their statement. Prior to the senior officer, arriving on the scene the officer said the police will get access to the video and review it. Then, 45 minutes later without reviewing the
April 17, 2015 | Page 31 video, a decision was made to arrest me. Coincidence? As I hope to resume my duties and responsibilities as president of the Board of Education, I want to say unequivocally to my political enemies–I say enemies because that is what they are–that you can continue to attack me personally and try to discredit me with lies misinformation, half-truths and look through every aspect of my life trying to find dirt, you can even try to take my freedom away but as long as I have any breath in my lungs I will continue to stand up, speak out against corruption and abuse of power. Let me be crystal clear there is nothing the Fentons, Grosses, Snowdens, Rosens, Hoshinos or their ilk can do about it because I am not afraid of you or what you can do to me. I have faith in the people who will have the ultimate say through the electoral process. That is how democracy is supposed to work. I also want to apologize to our community for the unrelenting personal attacks on me and my family that you will have to endure as a result of my statements here tonight. It will be vicious and it will be brutal because that is how these people operate. I have proven over my tenure on the Board that I have the intestinal fortitude to withstand the personal attacks and stay focused on the work of running this district. In closing I want to say that I believe the vast majority of officers in Beverly Hills Police Department are good and well intentioned. To my colleagues I want you to know that if they can do this to me and my family, that they can also do it to you and your family. I offered to my colleagues to review the video before this vote tonight. To the community I want to say unequivocally that I am innocent. I also ask the community to think long and hard about what is important to you. You can elect people who will return to past practice where corruption and mismanagement were swept under the rug and the board pretends it is not taking place or you can reelect those of us on the Board who have worked hard to put process and procedures in place to check these corrupt practices. I tell my children that if you have to hide or lie about something you are doing then ultimately you know it is wrong, Chief Snowden lied and tried to hide what he was doing with EBI, Inc. because he knew it was wrong. Because I exposed Chief Snowden, he is trying to bury me personally, professionally and politically. My grandmother always said: “the fish stinks from the head.” City Council the ball is now in your court. If you want to change the culture and return to the values BHPD stands for, it begins with you chopping the head of the stinky fish off. In order to clean house you must fire Chief Snowden for cause and remove or demote members of his command staff that are corrupt and abuse their power. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Apparently, the majority on the Board of Education does not understand basic principles of business that even Ben Frankin understood–“time is money.” The grievous mistake made the other night to abandon $190 million at hand and hope to come back 14 months later and ask for much more money is gambling with our entire construction effort, our students future, our relationship with the City (JPA) and the community at large. The cost/benefit is obvious to any thinking person–get more bang for our money now and assure that our students have school buildings by spending money now, or risk it all on a possible outcome of an election more than a year away. A future election may be undermined by higher interest rates, a volatile bond market, declining real estate values and cost escalations and inflation on labor and material. The board majority ignored the advice of their own BHUSD Finance Committee to sell bonds now for a myriad of sound business principles . To commit to this purely political vote is not only imprudent but astoundingly shortsighted and reckless. There is no plan B should this election fail ... Do we permanently leave students in trailers on the altar of politics? Is that being good fiduciaries ? To reiterate that this makes no business sense. It is extremely wasteful and risky financially is lost on the board majority apparently. I received an email just yesterday which subject was “LAUSD and lessons to be learned.” How ironic that one boardmember compared his vote to not sell bonds now to LAUSD's iPad initiative ensuing mess. iPads can always be returned but opportunity to build now will be far more difficult to trade up with the voters. I am happy to discuss this whole issue again and this comparison to LAUSD in particular, as this latest rationale is an example of tortured logic. In light of all the recent comments by Noah Margo and Howard Goldstein on Facebook and in other publications, the Board of Education should have an open and honest discussion about everything. Of course, The Courier’s articles and e-blasts can be discussed as well. I stand by every single one of my comments spoken and written . It is always of great interest to me when a boardmember flip-flops so dramatically in such a short period of time about a huge decision. Stealth flip-flopping and then doubling down is not a benchmark for transparency among your fellow boardmembers or leadership in general . We were elected to make principled decisions in the best interests of our students– not pander for votes. Looking forward to our discussion at a future board meeting. By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Apr. 17). You push yourself this year, and it's by exploring your fears that you'll learn your courage. A rather arbitrary action in May leads to remarkable luck. It won't always be easy to keep your commitments in relationships, but the sheer joy and beauty you experience this summer will make you glad you did. Taurus and Leo people adore you. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). No one is up and on all the time. Mojo comes and goes. Promise yourself that you'll stick with and believe in yourself through thick and thin. You would do it TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). If you could take the pain away from another, you would, but growing is something no one can do for someone else. Perhaps that's what makes it so difficult to watch. It's almost harder to watch than it is to go through! GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Refuse to succumb to worry. Sing instead of stress; joke instead of getting impatient. Instead of doing something rash, do nothing at all Problems will absolutely solve themselves. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Some of your best creations, relationships and opportunities have happened by way of accidental magic, and it's going to happen again in the next three days. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). One of your talents is dealing with other people's hot tempers, anxiousness and irritation. You have a way of acknowledging the reality of other people's feelings and thereby deescalating the situation and bringing peace. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Writing things down has magic powers that can somehow go many ways. This can make them more real or easier to let go of or harder to forget. Use the magic of writing today. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). If people did the right, considerate, fair and loving thing, then no one would need a governing system. The trouble is that even people in the same family can't agree on what the right, considerate, fair and loving thing is. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). If you wind up spending slightly more than budgeted, don't feel guilt, regret, shame or in any way let the overage stress you out. The ends find their own magical way of meeting. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Cheerfulness is an often underrated value, though if anyone can turn that around, you can. Your joyful, caring ways will energize all you touch. You never know when you can change someone's life with a smile. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Fashion sometimes seems silly to you. Why should a perfectly lovely look go in one year and out the other? Well, you don't have to worry about keeping up -- your classic tastes never go out of style. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You're going to solve the problem going on between two people you love or at least shrink it. Try not to form an opinion before or while you hear both sides. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). What was in favor one day goes out the next. Does that mean it was never true to begin with? You can't help what's trendy. You can only decide whether or not it's for you.
