DON’T YELL FIRE IN THIS HOUSE–Host Jay Leno, the Beverly Hills Firefighters and members of the California State Firefighters Association Pipes & Drums begin the entertainment with Firefighter Chad Beery singing the National Anthem at the 23rd annual Beverly Hills Firefighter’s Backdraft Ball. Backdraft Ball Lights Up Beverly Hills, Emcee Jay Leno Riffs With Chief Mundell By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills loves its firefighters, and Tuesday’s Backdraft Ball was the testament with over 700 attendees at this year’s annual event, held at The Beverly Hilton. Fire Chief Ralph Mundell played straight man to emcee comedian Jay Leno throughout the evening. But for all the fun, there was a solemn moment when the BHFA honored fellow firefighter, Fire Engineer Mike Downing, as the BHFA “2015 Firefighter of the Year.” Downing has been with the BHFD since 1994, rising to assume a leadership position, gain the respect and admiration of his fellows and to mentor others to become Fire Engineers. However, last year Downing suffered a paralyzing stroke. His dedication and steadfast determination to overcome his difficulties
has been unwavering and his presence, walking unaided on stage, served as a reminder of the character of these incredible men and women. Downing’s resolve is an inspiration to the BHFD and to the community of Beverly Hills. The Beverly Hills Firefighters’ Association Don Reynolds Scholarships went to three women, Rebecca Reinhardt at Colorado State University to receive a Masters in Occupational Therapy; Samantha Grate, attending Brigham Young University and majoring in nursing; and Marcelle Occomore-Viana who is attending Northern Arizona University to study Dermatology. Among the spectacular auction items, was an 11-night African Safari, which went for $13,000.

A BLISSFUL MARRIAGE–Cecile and Norman Krevoy were married for 65 years before he passed away last month at age 90. Cecile credits laughter as the miracle that sustained their marriage.
By Laura Coleman It’s been a lifetime of laughter for Cecile Krevoy thanks largely in part to her marriage of 65 years to prominent Beverly Hills dentist Norman Krevoy, who died on May 25 at 90. “It was his humor that made our marriage,” she said. “He made me laugh every day up until the end.” Born in 1925 in the Bronx, Cecile moved out to West Adams Boulevard at six years old with her parents and little brother. Cecile met Norman when she was 17 during a service at Temple Beth Jacob–their parents being good friends. At the time, Norman was in the Navy (see ‘CECILE KREVOY’ page 13)

By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills Unified School District’s legal battle against its former facilities manager Karen Christiansen, who at last count was due some $20.4 million from the school district, is far from over, according to BHUSD attorney Fred Fenster with Greenberg Glusker, who is now appealing the judgment on behalf of the district. Thanks to a new legal ruling handed down last week by the Court of Appeal in the case of Stephen K. Davis v. Fresno Unified School District, the legal battle will likely tip back in the district’s favor, averred Fenster. “The opinion is extraordinarily important in its analysis of Government Code section 1090 since the Court of Appeal determined that conflicts of interest engaged in by individual consultants as well as corporations and limited liability companies are subject to its reach,” he said. For the past several years, the two sides have played a litigious game that has gone from one extreme to the other. In 2012, Christiansen was criminally convicted by a jury for self-dealing by engaging in a conflict of interest. That verdict was subsequently reversed on appeal because the court (see ‘BHUSD VS. NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING The Planning Commission of the City of Beverly Hills, at its REGULAR meeting on Thursday, June 25, 2015, will hold a public hearing beginning at 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, to consider a request to convert 474 square feet of existing retail space to medical use in the existing building located at 320 North Canon Drive (Rite Aid). The proposed project requires the following entitlements: Medical Use Overlay Zone: Application of the City’s Medical Use Overlay Zone to the subject property is required to allow any new medical office uses. The subject project is located within the existing 19,044 square foot building occupied by Rite Aid, a retail/pharmacy use. If approved, up to 474 square feet of medical office space could be established within the existing footprint of the building. This would be equal to approximately 2.5% of the building’s floor area. Planned Development Review: Pursuant to Beverly Hills Municipal Code (BHMC) §10-3-1859, a Planned Development Review must be processed concurrently with any application for a Medical Use Overlay Zone. A Planned Development Review approval is possible if the reviewing body finds that the proposed project will meet the requirements of the BHMC and will advance the objectives of the zone in which it is located. This project has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The project qualifies for a Class 1 Categorical Exemption. This exemption is applicable to projects characterized as minor alterations to existing structures, when the project involves negligible or no expansion of an existing use. In addition, application of the overlay zone is eligible for a Class 5 categorical exemption since the overlay zone results in minor changes in land use limitations that would allow additional types of commercial uses. The project has been determined not to have a significant environmental impact and is exempt from the provisions of CEQA. Any interested person may attend the meeting and be heard or present written comments to the Commission. According to Government Code Section 65009, if you challenge the Commission's action in court, you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered to the City, either at or prior to the public hearing. If there are any questions regarding this notice, please contact Michele McGrath, Principal Planner in the Planning Division at 310.285.1135, or by email at mmcgrath@beverlyhills.org. Friends Of The Israel Defense Forces Saving Lives Gala Is Sunday At The Beverly Hilton By Laura Coleman In a world where freedom can slip away at the hands of terror, supporting the Middle East’s only democracy remains paramount. On Sunday, some 500 community leaders and Israel allies are expected to gather at this year’s Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Saving Lives Gala, which will be held at the Beverly Hilton to support The Israel Defense Forces (IDF). “Many of the IDF’s young men and women come from
relatively poor homes and, while the army provides them with necessities, there are no extras. FIDF tries to fill in the gaps to support the soldiers’ well-being,” said FIDF Western Region Founder/Chairman Leo David, this year’s gala honoree. David, who immigrated to the U.S. and founded the FIDF Western Region in 1981, fought with the underground Jewish defense force the Palmach and, later, with the IDF’s predecessor, the Haganah, during Israel’s 1948 War of Inde-
pendence. “In the beginning, we had 10 board members–all Israelis –but now our region is active from San Francisco to San Diego, and we are raising a new generation of leaders,” he said. The evening will begin with a 5:30 p.m. reception and silent auction, followed by the program and dinner at 7 p.m. For information, visit: https://fidf.org/FIDF_LA_Gala_ 2015.

By Laura Coleman Just weeks after the Refugio oil spill highlighted how important mankind’s relationship with the environment is, more than 1,000 guests at Heal the Bay’s gala, held at the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica, celebrated the fact that there is such an organization that is truly committed to the environment. was found during the investigation. Subsequently, an updated mailing list and survey list were mailed in 2014 to gauge the public’s interest and concerns and to develop an outreach plan. To that end, the DTSC will be holding a town hall to discuss the RAW plan. Three different clean up alternatives have been drafted. Three alternatives include: Alternative 1 – No Further Action Alternative 2 – Capping in Place and Institutional Controls This option would entail land-use restrictions to address potential health risks, leaving the arsenic in place and
capping “hot spots”with minimal disturbance and exposure to the arsenicimpacted soil. It would also rely on the landowners to maintain the integrity of the capping and seals and the restrictions. Alternative 3 – Excavation and Offsite Disposal and Onsite Containment This would entail the excavation of soil in some places to a depth of 5-feet. The soil would then be removed. Excavation, stockpiling, grading and transporting the soil will generate contaminated dust. Land use agreements would be executed between the landowners and DTSC to restrict usage in areas of arsenic-impacted soil and to ensure that future use of the property is consistent with the purpose and maintenance of those areas. Sensitive uses would be restricted. The DTSC will oversee all clean up activities. The DTSC report indicates that the Beverly Hills Land Company is in the “conceptual planning stage for development,” of the site. “At this time, the planning for Lot 12 is combined office, commercial, and residential multistory structure with parking.” The planning includes 26,600 square feet of office space, 16,000 square feet of commercial space and 15,800 square feet of residential space with 33,300 square feet of semisubterranean parking. Planning for Lot 13 is being considered for townhouses and parking. The public is encouraged to comment on the draft RAW and the DTSC will either modify or approve the draft as it is. The meeting is not for the purpose of City Planning; it is solely to consider the public’s input on which RAW plan alternative is most appropriate. No redevelopment is currently being proposed. The public is invited to review and comment on the draft RAW Wednesday, June 17, at Beverly Hills Public Library Auditorium at 455 N. Rexford Dr. The event is from 6-8:30 p.m. The comment period is June 17July 17; written comments should be directed to Tedd Yargeau, DTSC project manager, 8 1 8 - 7 1 7 - 6 5 4 5 ; tedd.yargeau@dtsc.ca.gov, or fax to 818-7171-6527. The DTSC will consider all public comments before a decision is made. The draft RAW is available at www.envirostor.dtsc.ca.gov

and she was a student at Fairfax High School. Though her parents moved the family out to Tujunga as a solution to her brother’s asthma when she was a freshman, her mom eventually relented and allowed Cecile to graduate Fairfax. “Tujunga was famous back then–everyone who had asthma lived there,” she recalled. After high school, Cecile went on to study at UCLA, eventually graduating from L.A. City College. Once Norman got accepted to attend the USC School of Dentistry, the two were married. While her husband was at school, Cecile worked as a secretary at her dad’s upholstery supply company and later as a ladies’ clothing model at the California Mart downtown. As newlyweds, the young couple first moved near La Cienega and Pico, eventually buying a home in Cheviot Hills. Then, 48 years ago, with their growing sons, Jack, Brad, and Phil making it clear the house was too small, the family moved to Beverly Hills, where Cecile still lives. “At the time, we didn’t know how we could afford the payments–all of $200 a month,” she said of the Beverly Hills home they originally bought for $82,000. “Beverly Hills was terrific and always has been,” she said. Cecile was particularly enamored with the Beverly Hills school system with her two youngest boys graduating from Hawthorne and all three from Beverly Hills High. Over the years, the Krevoys were active supporters of the Junior Sportsmen chapter of the City of Hope in addition to helping young adults recover from addictions through their involvement with Beit T'Shuvah. Cecile also volunteered for a decade at the CedarsSinai gift shop.
“We just had a very good life together,” she said, noting that they travelled extensively. Her husband, an avid photographer, amassed tens of thousands of photos, in addition to an extensive camera collection that spans decades. For more than 50 years Norman was a member of the Del Rey Yacht Club where he sometimes used his boat, named “Boat”, to sail with their sons to places like Catalina or Mexico. “Norman was a real Renaissance man–a sailor, photographer, and rode a motorcycle,” she said. She recalled one time travelling on the back seat of his motorcycle across the country, much to the consternation of her mother. “And I’m not the type to do that,” she confessed. “I just went along with him.” For her part, Cecile is still waiting to take the stage at the Academy Awards for an accolade reflecting her bit performances (mostly non-speaking roles) in several movies produced by her son Brad Krevoy. “He doesn’t like to tell me when he’s making a movie because I always nag him for a part,” she said. One time, when her son was producing Dumb & Dumber, she flew to Aspen where she was to film a dialogue scene with Jim Carrey. However, upon her arrival, the director informed her that Carrey had taken ill and was in the hospital–Cecile waited a few hours and then took a flight back to L.A. “I’m very impatient,” she said. These days, Cecile spends lots of time with her five granddaughters and she plays canasta several times a week. She is also a member of the Beverly Hills Women’s Club. “Beverly Hills is such a wonderful place to live,” she said. “It has everything and I hope I never have to move.”

HOW DO Y O U F E E L ? Conjoined Twins In Haiti Separated By Surgeons

From Children’s Hospital, USC’s Keck Medicine An 18-member team of physicians and nurses from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and Keck Medicine of USC led an international collaboration to separate a pair of sixmonth-old conjoined Haitian twins, the first such operation ever performed on Haitian soil, late last month. Marian and Michelle DaveNouche Bernard, born as one on Nov. 24, 2014, were separated after a seven-hour surgery at University Hospital of Mirebalais (HUM), in Mirebalias, Haiti. “The girls are doing fantas-
tic,” said surgical team leader Henri Ford, MD, MHA, the Haitian-born CHLA surgeon in chief and vice dean for medical education, professor and vice chair for clinical affairs, department of surgery, Keck School. Marian and Michelle— ”omphalopagus” twins since they are connected at the abdomen—are actually triplets (sister Tamar is healthy and normal). The two sisters had faced each other since birth, but recuperated in separate beds. “We anticipate Marian and Michelle will recover fully and
go on to lead healthy and happy lives,” Ford says. “It was an extraordinary moment,” said mother Manoucheca Ketan describing her reaction when she saw her separated daughters. “When I first met Dr. Ford, he told me he was confident he could separate my children, but I didn’t know how it would turn out. Now I am feeling a lot of joy and want to recognize and thank the hospital for everything.” Read more at www.bhcourier.com.
ECPHP staff eagerly anticipate the completion of the rooftop play area renovation.
Early Childhood Partial Hospitalization Program to Get New Playground Thanks to a $60,000 donation from the Los Angeles Women’s Circle of Giving, the UCLA Early Childhood Partial Hospitalization Program (ECPHP) at the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA will enjoy a playground renovation specifically designed to facilitate social engagement, address sensory issues and enhance other developmental areas. ECPHP provides a structured early childhood environment for children 2 to 6. Young children who are diagnosed with autism, developmental disabilities or behavioral problems can participate in a 10-week, intensive early intervention program designed to comprehensively assess and improve behavior, social skills and development. The program also gives parents resources and tools to help their children thrive at home, at school and in social settings. “Our therapy rooms are child-centered and engaging.
They look more like preschool classrooms than a hospital setting,” says Stephanny Freeman, PhD, clinical psychologist and co-director of ECPHP. But the one thing the program lacks is an engaging outdoor play area. “We currently have one fencedin structure on the top-floor, open-air area, but it’s deteriorating and doesn’t provide appropriate therapeutic and play options for the range of children we serve,” says Dr. Freeman. “The new play area will incorporate therapeutic components with elements that promote gross- and fine-motor skills and social interactions. It’s also designed to engage the senses through touching, climbing, balancing, pushing and pulling,” says Dr. Freeman. An inviting outdoor area that allows kids to safely explore while burning off energy is important since families spend so much time at ECPHP. Children attend sessions from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Read more at www.bhcourier.com

For 7th Straight Year, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Ranked Among The Nation’s Best Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has been ranked among the top 10 children’s hospitals in the country and also named to the elite Honor Roll in the U.S. News & World Report rankings released online Tuesday. It is one of only 12 children’s hospitals in the country and the only one in California to make the Honor Roll in 2015-16, an achievement it has earned for seven consecutive years since the list was established in 2009—an accomplishment attained by no other pediatric hospital in California. “In 26 years of evaluating the country’s children’s hospitals, U.S. News & World Report has included CHLA among the nation’s elite every time,” says Richard D. Cordova, FACHE, CHLA president/CEO. “What an incredible run of excellence. It reflects our ability to sustain our mission to create hope and build healthier futures as well as our promise of superior care to the children we treat.” In all, the hospital placed among the top 10 in seven specialties measured by the survey. For 2015-16, CHLA’s cardiology and heart surgery team was named #3 in the nation, surging four spots from last year. Diabetes and endocrinology went from seventh to sixth, while urology jumped 10
places to 10th in the nation. Cancer and neonatology were ranked eighth in their respective areas, while orthopaedics was ranked ninth. Gastroenterology and GI surgery finished 10th, matching the specialty’s position from last year.
In the 2015-16 U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals survey, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (with the Anderson Pavilion pictured ) was ranked #1 in California and was selected as one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the country.
CHLA’s overall scores placed it among the top seven nationally, and the hospital equaled or improved its national ranking in four of the 10 categories compared to its performance on the 2014-15 survey.

ruled that she was an independent contractor. In the civil action filed by Christiansen against the district, L.A. Superior Court Judge Stephen Czuleger adopted the interpretation of Sec. 1090 employed by the Court of Appeal, which enabled the jury to award her $13.7 million in damages. However, the ruling in Davis disagreed with that interpretation. It held that the conflict of interests provision of Gov. Code section 1090 does apply to consultants, independent contractors and corporations who engage in such prohibited behavior. This ruling could therefore prove pivotal in the district’s continuing ef-

Christiansen’s attorney Philip Kaufler told declined to comment on the case.

to enhance the lives of current and future residents by providing a sacred space where people can reflect, meditate, or simply enjoy the natural environment, in addition to the butterflies that will gravitate there. Dr. Louis Josephson, president/CEO of Vista Del Mar, said the foundation decided on a butterfly garden due to butterflies being often used as a “metaphor for transformation,” which is a key focus of
Vista Del Mar’s new Horticulture Therapy program. All of the plants used in the garden were donated by Oakley Gardens landscape designer Margaret Oakley-Otto, who acquired the plants through the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants. The garden is filled with drought-resistant plants that are both native to Southern California and attractive to butterflies, especially Monarch butterflies, now an endangered species.

Dr. Nina Ansary will read from her new book, Jewels Of Allah: The Untold Story Of Women In Iran and answer audience questions at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 24 at Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd. The book highlights many courageous female leaders and advocates throughout Iran’s history; and discusses the unanticipated consequences of the Islamic Revolution. Inspired by her doctoral research at Columbia University, the book, she says “shatters stereotypical assumptions and the often misunderstood story of women in Iran and describes a growing feminist movement that Ansary says has emerged within Iran’s patriarchal society.” Born in Tehran and now based locally, Ansary is a historian, scholar and human rights advocate. She left Iran at the onset of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Proceeds from book sales will benefit charities and organizations that empower disadvantaged young women in Iran. with disruptive adult patrons. However, police are unable to cite individuals for aggressive panhandling unless a witness is willing to file a report. The Human Relations Commission (HRC), working closely with the City’s Human Services staff, evaluated circumstances in Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Pasadena. They discovered that these cities had “enlisted the services of private companies that provide wrap-around safety, hospitality and cleaning services to address quality of life issues.” Block by Block ambassadors will provide several levels of service to the community to improve safety, work with police to report incidents and file police reports, triage with homeless individuals to pro-
vide C.L.A.S.P. services as an outreach team, reach out to merchants and to the Chamber of Commerce, patrol the City’s parking structures as a barrier to encampment and aid them in finding appropriate services, and communicate issues such as graffiti removal for City maintenance. The initial proposal included a plan for 21 hours of service at an initial cost of $500,000 for a pilot program. The program will outfit ambassadors with City-approved uniforms, bikes, communications, data collection and a training program unique for Beverly Hills demographics and issues. The City has a high concentration of visitors with a significant and visible homeless population, according to Block by Block’s assessment. In addition, “visitors to the district are often generous to those who

are panhandling in the area.” Visitors and residents need to feel safe, and homeless individuals may require assistance to get the services they need. Block by Block can help the City to develop educational aids for a campaign to encourage people to give money to social service agencies instead of to panhandlers. Block by Block is a nationwide program utilized in cities such as San Francisco, Phoenix, Waikiki, New Orleans, Miami, Washington D.C. and New York City. Public comments on the topic showed a high level of support for such a program. One resident complained that he did not feel his wife was safe walking to Starbucks because of the panhandlers out front each morning. Aggressive panhandlers operate freely without a wit-
ness to file a formal complaint so police cannot issue citations. “A lot of times people don’t want to get involved. With the ambassador program, if they (the ambassadors) see it, they can act and it can go to court. Then this is not somewhere that it is easy to panhandle, like it is now,” said Sgt. George Demarois. The Beverly Hills Police Department has been unable to fill patrol positions in the department, and has been mandated to improve hiring practices. A Block by Block representative also revealed that the City’s parking structures are not secured. Surveillance is patchy or non-existent, with few cameras installed even in 24-hour structures. Vandalism is also a problem said Chad Lynn, assistant director of Public Works.
BEVERLY HILLS “Some of our parking structures are open for business 24-hours a day,” he said. “We have trouble securing them. The sooner we can identify people who have been sleeping there the sooner we can help them. To get out of weather they will break doors or tape doors open, or get in whatever way they can.” Councilmember Lili Bosse questioned why the proposal was only 21-hours per day. “What would it look like if you were going to build a program from the ‘best case’ scenario?” asked Mayor Julian Gold. “It doesn’t make sense if we build around the budget and there are gaps in deployment. I would like to see what we are not getting.” The City Council approved moving forward and asked for a proposal that included a 24hour scenario.

Among the stand outs was a delectable dish of organic Scottish salmon, cooked in the vapor of vegetables, and accompanied by a caramelized fig, lettuce cream, tempura potatoes and salmon tartar - a sublime dish he invented while at The Peninsula Tokyo’s Peter Restaurant. Another talent Martineau said he honed in Japan, in addition to crafting exquisite flavors, was the art of plating. A floating island of French meringue lightly resting on vanilla custard, for example, is as beautiful as it is delicious. More recently, at the two years he spent growing the culinary prominence of Santa Barbara’s El Encanto Hotel, Martineau developed a deeper

He’s also considering growing herbs and greens hydroponically onsite. Born in the Champagne region of France, the youngest of seven children, Martineau said he was always interested in food. “My mom was a great cook,” he said, noting that she incorporated fresh items from their farm in the three daily feasts she prepared. “I was always very interested and watched her as she prepared dishes.” At 16, Martineau began formal training as a chef, eventually beginning his career in his hometown of Champagne at two legendary restaurants,
Le Chateaubriand and Le Valentino. He later moved to Burgundy as Chef de Partie at the region’s world-renowned two Michelin Star Abbaye de Saint Michel and three Michelin Star La Côte Saint-Jacques. At 22, Martineau moved to New York and served as Chef de Cuisine at Daniel Boulud’s iconic New York eatery, Daniel. He acted as Boulud’s second-in-command at Daniel for 6 years until he told his boss, “I want to do what you do.” When Martineau became the Savoy Hotel’s executive chef at 30, he was the youngest person in the London hotel’s history to hold such a role. “Creating a menu I think is the most exciting thing for me,” he said.

What an incredible musical evening it was as SHARE Boomtown 2015 celebrated 100 years of Ol’ Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) and what a blast it was on the Broad Stage at Santa Monica College’s Performing Arts Center. Outgoing president Dolores Nemiro, introduced comedian Yacov Noy, who brought down the house with his interpretation of a woman getting dressed and putting on make-up through a combination of mime movement, stand-up and illu-
sion. He was terrific, as was Sandy Hackett, son of Buddy Hackett, who kept the laughter going with his rapid fire jokes. A selection of film clips from some of Sinatra’s movies such as On The Town and Guys & Dolls brought back many wonderful moments. Geno Henderson then performed some musical numbers...New York, New York, Luck Be A Lady Tonight, Take Back Your Mink, Havana/Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat along with those fabulous dancing SHARE Ladies including Terry Baldwin, Lois Bloom, Debra Couch, Ellen Feder, Nancy Gregory, Anita Mann Kohl, Dolores Nemiro, Esther Rosenfield, Linda Schlesinger, Christine Wallace, Annie Gaybis Byner, Gia Bay, Caroline Borncamp, Lynn Brody-Slome, Dana Grilikhes Nassi, Roberta Haft, Joy Jolise, Sami Faulkner, Gayle Rosenthal, September Sarno, and Sandra Siegel. We were then entertained by Frank Sinatra, Jr. and his big band, who had us mesmerized by that voice, that voice, that wonderful voice... If you closed your eyes, you’d think it was Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. SHARE (Share Happily And Reap Endlessly) is a 62 year old non-profit composed of women dedicated to raising funds for developmentally disabled, abused and neglected children as well as medical research for all forms of developmental disabilities.

property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000004279436. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. MARCIA WILSON HOBBS LETTER TO THE EDITOR If people have concerns about out-of-towners crowding a Beverly Hills dog park, the answer is simple: a Beverly Hills dog tag with an RFID chip that unlocks the gate to get in. It could be renewed annually like our library cards, with proof of residence. Tom Pease

THE FEAR OF BEING HAPPY I have always loved peanuts, eating them at ball games, feeding them to circus elephants, relishing their presence in a Snickers bar and consuming them on a plane where airlines frequently serve this choice morsel for lunch. Peanuts make me happy. However, like that other Peanuts character, “Charlie Brown,” I fear being happy because whenever I become too happy something bad always happens. I’m always waiting for the other shoe to drop and in the happy/sad cycle of life, it always does. My psychotherapist once sat me down on his couch and gave me a happiness test. My score confirmed that I have a greater fear of happiness (referred to by “Dr. Fear” as Cherophobia) than most people and virtually all pets. I am frightened to let myself become too happy, find it difficult to trust positive sensibilities because they never seem to last and maintain that feeling good is nothing more than a momentary euphoria—much like arriving upbeat for a blind date with a beautiful woman, delivering my best opening lines, playing with her dog, and than discovering that I am at the wrong address. Happiness scholars have long concluded that being happy is not a single empirical phenomenon but rather a collection of feel good experiences such as getting relief from constipation, outsmarting my grandchildren, sleeping through the night and thus avoiding multiple nocturnal trips to the bathroom or discovering that the Lionel train set that made me so happy as a kid and has been gathering dust in the attic for decades, is now worth gazillions. The letdown arises and the happiness disappears when the constipation returns with a vengeance. I find out that the grandkids let me outsmart them out of respect for my age, sleeping through the night ended abruptly when I replaced a late night cognac with a glass of warm milk and found out to my dismay that my parents gave away my train set when they sold the house and retired to Florida leaving only the empty Lionel orange and blue boxes worth only a pittance according to online bidders. I have discovered that song lyrics promoting happiness often fail to live up to their message. Think about “Happy days are here again, The skies above are clear again” and “Grey skies are gonna clear up, Put on a happy face.” Well according to the U.S. Weather Service that simply is not the case. More often than not the clearing of grey skies has no staying power and is only a momentary reprieve from the bad weather front that is moving in. Then there are the ominous lyrics for the song Get Happy, “Forget your troubles and just get happy, You better chase all your cares away, Shout Hallelujah come on get happy, Get ready for the Judgment Day.” Get ready for the Judgment Day? We’re talking about an emotional swing from being happy one moment
to Armageddon, doomsday and the day or reckoning! Is there any wonder that I fear being happy knowing what’s in store for me. Which brings me to the age old question, where is the happiest place on earth? Is it, as many believe, Disneyland where you can spend time with Snow White and her brood and share a slice of gooseberry pie with the most joyous dwarf, “Happy” or can you find happiness elsewhere. My favorite happy places include hanging out at the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory on Saturday’s when they dispense unlimited samples of Gobstoppers and Wonka Bars, the solitude of sitting in my car as it makes it’s way through the car wash, visiting Happy Valley, Ore. which, as it turns out, is not too far from Pleasant Valley, Ore. or alternatively vacationing in Happy, Texas, “the town without a frown” (population 671). Another happy location of mine is any pub that features a “happy hour” where, at least for the moment, all is well and well shaken with the world. Perhaps my happiest moments are the times I spend with friends over dinner. After recently paying a check, however, I agonized over the notion that extreme happiness is almost always followed by something unpleasant which on this occasion turned out to be an empty space where my car was parked and if that isn’t sufficient cause for alarm, my lottery ticket with the winning numbers, was safely tucked away in the glove compartment. There are many cultures around the world that believe that extreme highs must be followed by extreme lows. In the middle East, people say “laughing loudly wakes up sadness.” My take on this is that you better have a good explanation when your significant other suddenly bolts out of bed at 3 a.m. and says, “okay big boy, what’s so funny?” In China cheerful folks are warned that “extreme happiness begets tragedy.” This message is usually found in fortune cookies served at the end of a meal, usually on Sundays. In English-speaking countries you might hear “what goes up, must come down”– a favorite line long used by sex therapists. Sigmund Freud is quoted as saying: “no scientist has come up with a formula for fusing certain ingredients to produce the drink of happiness.” I respectfully disagree. Pepto-Bismol is precisely that beverage. My definition of happiness simply stated is: “At the end of the day a truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery while on a detour.”

By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (June 12). Your family is funny. You know this already, but the point will be proved over and over this year. Go for the maximum interaction over the next 10 weeks. A financial bonus comes in September. What you learn in November could make you rich! December brings adventure and a move. Aries and Cancer people adore you. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Today’s challenge will help you know and appreciate your own strength, intelligence and toughness. This one will hit you on many levels, and you’ll enjoy the fight. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The problem with trying to stop doing something is that you do it more because you are still focusing on the “something.” Decide on what you’ll do instead, and focus yourself there. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The world responds kindly to your lack of pretense. You believe in yourself, and others believe in you, too. Maybe you are even being groomed for advancement. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Your plans will work out. Is that not the best thing you can hear? Plain and simple, the intention you put down will come to fruition. If you haven’t made a plan, hopefully this will be your inspiration. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You don’t have to pay anyone else to make you beautiful. It will come from your thoughts, your actions and your genetics, all of which have little to do with your free will today. Beauty is just who you are. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Do you hear what people are saying about you? That’s a strange feeling. The upshot is, you’ll be struck by how you are becoming the remarkable person you always wanted to be. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). When someone rubs you the wrong way, it’s not personal. Maybe they have a different education or point of view. Maybe their view is colored by the generations that came before. Afford your dissenters some leeway. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Whatever you wanted from this day, wrap it up, put it in the refrigerator and save it for another occasion. Today will be about caring for your loved ones. They need it, and you can give it. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Choose your mentor carefully. Achievers aren’t always great teachers. Look for a person you can get along with and respect, a person who can get you from A to B. Don’t worry about Z yet. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Empathy is an underrated virtue, as many can’t see its use. For an actor or a parent or any manager of people, empathy is invaluable. You can’t move people without understanding where they are. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Everything has a cost, though the currency is not always dollars and cents. You’ll be aware of today’s trade–but someone will make you aware of it, which is a gift, though not so pleasant in the unwrapping. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). There are many things wrong with the world, and you could spend your time talking about that all day long if you wanted to. But what’s the point? You have so many blessings, and that’s what you’ll highlight today.
