Community leader and former Horace Mann PTA President Howard Goldstein, has, like Korbatov, repeatedly emphasized his commitment to stopping Metro’s current subway plan. with enthusiastic students, many of whom had told parents, “It’s my favorite class!” Monday’s inspirational showcase of what was in store for students in the coming year highlighted that STEM learning can be both fun and educational. “This is robotics, as you can see, so craziness, as you can see,” said the high school program’s new teacher, Conny Santa Cruz. “What we do here in ROP, we learn as we do.” Superintendent Gary Woods has been leading the district in its push to embrace STEM programming - an essential skill set for helping provide students with skills that they will need in
Former Beverly Hills dentist James Fabe, told The Courier that he was running first and foremost as a concerned parent hoping to impact his son’s experience in middle school. His platform includes early active intervention, ergonomic education to avoid excess repetitive stress, and emphasizing “simultaneous success” in academics, art, athletics and character, with an emphasis on internet and library science. Beverly Hills businessman John Dohm, who was part of the inaugural class of Team Beverly Hills, is the lone candidate on the ballot without a statement. He ended his campaign just weeks after he filed his papers, saying it was not the time to run. the careers of the future. Principal Carter Paysinger told those in attendance: “For me, the robotics season is one of the highlights of the school year. It’s remarkable what these kids are able to do.” Early next year, the students will participate in a competition where they will have six weeks design and construct a robot from blueprints to final assembly, in addition to crafting a business plan and marketing strategy. Last year, the BHHS Robotics Team won the prestigious Chairman’s Cup award at the L.A. Regional Tournament for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.) “The success of the program is the synergy that every single one in the team has,” Santa Cruz said.

Kitt Shapiro Channels Mom, Eartha Kitt, In New Line of Eco-Friendly Products By Victoria Talbot Eartha Kitt was never one to be forgotten - and so it is true even now, as daughter Kitt Shapiro brings the soul of the diva back to earth in a line of goods that can only be described as divine. Kitt, who grew up with mom here in Beverly Hills, has returned to do a stint of interviews on her new line of products that feature “Kittisisms,” witty sayings her mother used to express her philosophy on life. Eartha Kitt was always ahead of her time, composting and growing everything she ate, recycling when it was not
fashionable, and repurposing long before it was trendy. Now daughter Kitt Shapiro is taking the lessons to heart and inscribing “kittisisms” on her legacy coasters, tee-shirts, blankets and candles. Simply Eartha is an eco-friendly line of products with kittisisms like, “Never miss an opportunity to shut up,” “Don’t panic,” or “My flaws make me who I am.” “I share my mother’s words to remind me,” said Shapiro. Two of the paintings, “Portrait of a Rabbi and Portrait of a Girl Wearing a GoldTrimmed Cloak,” are on loan from private collections. The tiny oil on copper painting depicts the artist at the age of 20 or 21 in the middle of full-throated laugh. Cheeks full, teeth showing, the young artist’s eyes twinkle with the sentiment. Such immediacy of emotion, reminiscent of a snapshot and captured so readily, is a remarkable feat.

NORRIS TURNS 40—The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, named one of the top eight comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S. by the National Cancer Institute, celebrated 40 years of progress in cancer research with a dinner and awards program at the Westin Bonaventure. Some of the faculty’s clinicians’ and researchers’ breakthroughs include discovery of the relationship between hormones and breast and prostate cancer; work in epigenetics that led to development of an important therapy for a blood-cell disorder; and improvement of a technique that replaces a patient’s cancerous bladder with a new, functional bladder created from a piece of small intestine. Taking part in the event, emceed by actor Martin Short, were (from left) benefactors Ming and Eva Hsieh, and Peggy and Andrew Cherng.
Children’s Hospital Center Wins American Academy Of Sleep Medicine Accreditation SPACE THEMED GALA TO HELP THE BLIND—The Blind Childrens Center Los Angeles celebrated its 75th anniversary with a gala under the Space Shuttle Endeavor at the California Science Center. The event honored Tom Sullivan and the Southern California’s Delta Gamma chapters for their years of service. Founded in 1938, the center is a family-centered agency that serves children who are blind or visually impaired, infants through second grade and their families. At the event, are supporters (from left): Liz Shatner and her husband Andrew Clement, Ina Zec, Judge Arnold Kessler and Midge Horton (former center director).
The Sleep Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angles (CHLA) was recently accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “This certification recognizes it as a center of highest quality care for pediatric patients with sleep disorders,” says Sally Ward, M.D., medical director of the center. “Children need a sleep center so they can be evaluated for difficulty falling or staying asleep, notes Ward. “Being an accredited center recognizes more than just the Sleep Lab—”it recognizes that we have the best technology, staff and practices to care for all types of pediatric sleep disorder.” Untreated sleep disorders can raise the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke, especially in young patients who may continue to experience sleep disruptions throughout their lives. These disturbances, along with the rise in pediatric sleep apnea associated with the childhood obesity epidemic, made the role of a sleep lab invaluable to the overall health of children and families. At CHLA’s Sleep Center, the largest AASM-accredited pediatric sleep lab in
Southern California, around 1,500 patients each year are evaluated for sleeprelated disorders. The center is staffed by tripleboard certified experts Ward, Iris Perez, M.D.; Salman Khan, M.D.; and Eugene Sohn, M.D., who are experienced in Dr. Sally Ward diagnosing a variety of conditions, from obstructive sleep apnea to narcolepsy. These disruptions prevent a fully restorative night’s sleep and can lead to behavioral problems, mood disorders and daytime inattention. The sleep professionals also specialize in monitoring sleep patterns in high-risk children with Down’s syndrome, midface or jaw abnormalities and cerebral palsy, frequently treating patients that other centers turn away. In addition to the four physicians, a group of licensed technicians, respiratory-care practioners and registered nurses are part of the Sleep Center team and perform sleep studies seven nights a week. They also perform multiple sleep latency tests, which measure the elapsed time between lying down and falling asleep during daytime naps—a determination of narcolepsy symptoms.

Know The Signs Of An Abusive Relationship Q. Dear Dr. Fran: I am a 32-yearold professional woman. I dated a 39-year-old man I will call “Jack” for a year and we have been living together the past six months. The first year of our courtship Jack was extremely kind and generous to me. After we started living together, I saw some things that worry me. He gets angry at the smallest things like if I spice his fish too much or move position when he is taking my picture. He doesn’t yell. He throws something with the force of rage. He has shattered dishes, champagne glasses and even smashed an expensive camera. When I try to talk about it with him, he retreats into himself and won’t talk to me sometimes for days and even a couple of weeks. He never apologizes nor owns up to his outbursts. He makes me think I have done something wrong. I want to try couples’ therapy, but he won’t go. What shall I do? Nicole J. A. Dear Nicole: I have bad news for you. I don’t think your relationship with Jack has a chance of survival. Besides his anger management problem, he won’t accept any accountability for his actions. Worse yet, he won’t talk to you. Jack has no communication nor conflict-resolution skills. A good relationship requires two willing partners and you sound like you’re in this alone. Nicole, you are involved with a man who has some abusive behaviors. Abuse beings with the person controlling you. Control is Jack losing it when he takes your
Dr. Fran Walfish Answers Your Questions photograph. Instead of couples therapy, Nicole, I think you need individual therapy to discover why you are attracted to and stay with a man who mistreats you. You need to explore what in your early family history evokes the same familiar feelings that Jack can evoke in you. Hopefully, the therapist will help you separate from Jack and move on. Dr. Fran’s Nine Non-Obvious Signs of an Abusive Relationship 1. Excessive Charm and Ingratiating Behavior: This is the abuser’s way of seducing you to trust him before he acts out his abuse toward you. 2. The Silent Treatment: The silent treatment functions to keep the receiver in suspense of what will happen, and unsure of “what they did wrong,” and “how bad it is.” It is a way of controlling as a precursor to abuse. 3. Expecting Mind Reading: This means the person acts unhappy until others guess what they want. This controlling behavior locks the other person out and raises their anxiety feeling like a failure for not guessing correctly. 4. Poison Delegation: This is where the controlling abuser asks the victim to do something for them, saying they can’t do it for themselves. But whatever the vic-
tim does is met with harsh criticism instead. 5. Constantly Correction: Disputing or correcting someone on points irrelevant to the main point being discussed. The correcting keeps the abuser on top and his subject in a one-down position. 6. Lying: You can never be sure if they are forthcoming with the whole truth. 7. Projective Identification: Essentially this means you get blamed for no fault. This is a psychological term which means the abuser relates to you “as if” you did something wrong. When you get upset and deny it, they confirm your behavior as justification for the accusation. It is an extremely manipulative behavior on the part of the abuser by stimulating fear, anxiety, guilt or shame in the vulnerable victim. 8. Sexual manipulation: Your abusive partner emotionally manipulates you into sexual activities you don’t like. They may even emotionally arm-twist you by saving things like “other girls/guys do it. Why can’t you.” 9. Denial: Even when you point out their emotionally abusive ways, your partner doesn’t accept their behavior as a flaw. Instead, they convince themselves and try to convince you that they’re doing all this only to help you become a better person.

Hills Youth Center, confirmed Hoshino. Tewel was arrested at JEM. BHPD served an arrest warrant on Tevel (Tewel) at the request of the New York Police Department. He was taken into custody and charged with “Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree,” “Criminal Sexual Act in the Third Degree,” and “Sexual Abuse in the First Degree.” Hoshino, who did not return calls to The Courier, told the Jewish Journal that the arrest warrant included three counts of criminal sexual acts in the first degree, five counts of criminal sexual acts in the third degree and three counts of sexual abuse in the first degree.Tevel was arrested without incident and he is being held at the Los Angeles County inmate reception center in downtown Los Angeles awaiting extradition to New York. The rabbi has been the subject of several articles in the Jewish Journal in Los Angeles since August, and is featured on the Jewish Community Watch’s (JWC) Wall of Shame website. The web page is devoted to exposing sexual predators in the Jewish community. “He was arrested for child molestation allegations,” said Ilanit Gluckowsky of the Jewish Community Watch. Tevel worked at JEM for the last two years. Tevel’s wife Bracha is the daughter of the JEM Center’s founder and director. They were married in
role in preserving the Millard Sheets legacy for our community,” said Fine Art Commission Chair Fiona Chalom. “Sheets was an influential artist, designer and educator who made an important contribution to the postwar Southern California landscape with midcentury designs that integrated art and architecture,” said Beverly Hills resident Leslie Lassiter, managing director of J. P. Morgan. Throughout the 1950s Sheets designed mosaics for Home Savings and Loan at dozens of branches, many which were acquired by Chase. Two other Sheets’ mosaics can be found at 9245 Wilshire Blvd. and 9145 Wilshire Blvd. 2002. There are no known allegations of child sexual abuse at JEM at this time. Tevel is not charged with anything in California, said Hoshino. “God will help that it will show that it’s all false and will clear up and people will see while we will still continue our good job for the community,” Rabbi Hertzel Illulian, Tevel’s father-in-law, told Eyewitness News. The Rabbi Illulian did not return calls and JEM did not open today. As of Wednesday afternoon, officials in the New York City Police Department could not confirm the warrant. “We don’t have anything at this time.” “It takes time to get through our system,” NYPD spokesman John Grimpel said. In August, the Jewish Journal reported that four men said they had been victims of Tevel. They were minors at the time. The victims claimed a pattern of smacking them on the buttocks and rubbing them suggestively. One victim, who came forth in a community meeting held at a private home in the Pico-Robertson area, told a story of being spanked, massaged and rubbed in Brooklyn when he was 14, in 2004, by Tevel. The alleged victim wished to remain anonymous. JEM’s attorney, Dana Cole, told the Journal that, “As far as we know there’s been nothing improper whatsoever in terms of people he came in contact with at the JEM Center.”

Lasts Make Make Major Donation To Fowler’s African Collection In honor of the launch of the Fowler Museum at UCLA’s 50th anniversary celebration, collectors Jay T. and Deborah R. Last of Beverly Hills, have donated 92 wood and ivory figures, masks, tools and spoons made by the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The combined value of the objects is more than $14 million. This recent donation completes the Lasts’ promised gift to the museum of a total of 318 Lega works of art. The Lasts, longtime supporters of the Fowler, have made many significant gifts of African art, helped fund the construction of the Fowler’s building on the UCLA campus and recently endowed the museum's position of curator of African arts. They also have established a $1 million matching commitment to increase essential operating support for the museum. “Jay and Deborah Last have generously donated more than 660 works of art to the Fowler Museum since 1973—including several distinctive and rare niche collections, such as the Zulu staffs and snuff containers currently on view —and can be counted among the museum’s
most loyal p a t r o n s ,” said Marla C. Berns, the Shirley and Ralph Shapiro director of the Fowler Museum. “I was fascinated by the concept of the A Lega mask Lega society, one without hereditary or elected rulers, unified by a semisecret group, the Bwami Society, whose members rose in prestige and increasing influence as they practiced a highly moral standard of social behavior.” Last said. “The emphasis was on harmony in social relationships, circumspection, filial piety, group spirit, obedience, self-discipline and tenacity of purpose. This linking of art with moral culture, the use of art objects to serve as a teaching and inspirational device during Lega ceremonies, added a great deal of meaning to my collection.”

Parents Can Learn About Preschool Options At Sunday’s Fair or those doing preschool shopping, the free once-ayear L.A. Preschool Fair is the chance to meet and greet more than 40 preschool directors in one place on one day, from 1:30-4:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3 at Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Irmas Campus at 11661 W. Olympic Blvd., (Olympic and Barrington.) The fifth preschool event of its kind, the event is expected to draw hundreds of parents (and children who are welcome) from throughout the city, to learn about preschool philosophies, programming, open houses and admissions. “This will be a great opportunity for parents to explore the variety of early childhood educational options available to them in L.A.,” says Desiree Lapin, president of The P a r e n t s Education League of Los A n g e l e s (PEL), host of the event.
F
“There are so many things to take into consideration when looking at preschools. These include if your child is potty trained, if they are ready for a full-time or part-time program, and if the school environment is one that will be a fit for your family.” Lapin said the PEL has had a terrific response from preschool directors who welcome an opportunity to help educate parents about their program and venues. The schools represented are from all over L.A. and differ in approaches to child development, length of program and readiness requirements.
In addition to meeting school directors and representatives, there will be an opportunity to sign up for school open houses when parents will have a chance to visit the schools for a guided tour. The fair will help parents determine if their child would thrive in a Montessori, Waldorf or Reggio Emilia school or if a more traditional approach would be a better match. The Parents Education League of Los Angeles is a non-profit dedicated to providing L.A. parents access to the most objective, current and comprehensive information regarding school and educa-
tion in the city. For more information call 310-441-0684. To RSVP for free parking access and to

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 1). You’ll answer a strange calling this month and land in a lucky spot. You’ll do well in a December competition. Funding for a creative or religious project will come through in January. You’ll exchange promises with someone special or sign a big contract in February. Your home gets a makeover the last part of 2014. Pisces and Capricorn people adore you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Avoid a contest of wills. Back down or stay neutral. Neutrality won’t induce the same surge of excitement as victory, but it’s better than risking a loss of friendship, work or love. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). When confidential matters are revealed, it’ll be embarrassing or liberating for the one whose secret is out or a mix of both. You’ll be sensitive and empathetic in this case. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Slow down. Take something off the schedule instead of rushing around frantically trying to fit it all in. Rushed people do dangerous things like eating or driving too fast. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). If you decide it’s time to find a new routine to help you deal with everyday challenges (because the old one is causing you more harm than good), the planets will support your search for a new way. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Success might be temporarily threatened, and this is just the challenge that is needed to strengthen your resolve for longterm victory. Hard-won battles are always more fun anyway. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You think you know a person well, and then get surprised again. Fresh interest ignites in you. This is part of the joy of socializing. Adjust expectations accordingly. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). As the sign that rules appetite, you wonder whether to subdue your cravings, and if so, how? The key is in finding the right alternatives. Do this and willpower is unnecessary. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You have a talent for making up funny scenarios in your mind. This is something you keep to yourself or translate into a bit of fiction or journal entry. Sharing in other ways isn’t advised. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Work you do with family will benefit all, and it will be a good feeling to flourish collectively. Handle repairs while they are still manageable. If you wait, complications will arise. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). This is an excellent day for writing, designing or developing mechanical or technical skills. What you learn will stick with you and apply directly to the job you’ll do next week. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). There’s nowhere to go without running into someone you know, so look your best. You may find yourself in the same room as an ex-love or boss. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Enthusiasm will lead to a sale. If not selling goods and services, you’ll sell someone on an idea or the prospect of getting to know and like you.

Last Vegas–A Fun Romp; Running From Crazy–A ****** Hemingway Documentary Running From Crazy, Barbara Kopple’s Last Vegas stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline. While it’s a pleasurable sight watching the venerable four, it is Mary Steenburgen who steals the movie with her slightly off-key warbling and heart as soft as the interior of a Vegas cactus. The four, childhood Brooklyn friends who have long since moved in different parts of the country, get together for a bachelor party in Las Vegas. Douglas, the most successful and healthy, is going to marry a woman 30-years his junior. The script by Dan Fogelman is sometimes funny and other times, ludicrous, as director Jon Turteltaub’s camera follows the four during their escapades trying to recapture their youth. The script is predictable and harmless and stays away from the crude humor found in the Vegas setting of The Hangover. Turteltaub’s direction is sure handed as usual, the AARP quartet interplays with comedic expertise and Steenburgen’s coquettish actions and whimsical delivery of her lines, wins us over hearts. There are no crotch jokes, vomiting, gratuitous nudity or blood squirting–just plain, unadulterated fun. It is made for those who go to the movies to sit back and enjoy. 2 Bagels out of 4.
latest documentary, centers on the unfortunate circumstances of Mariel Hemingway’s legendary grandfather, Ernest, his suicide and the disturbing family history of mental illness. Mariel, a former actress, is now an advocate for the cure of the disease that took the life of her exquisite looking sister, Margaux and other members of her family. Mariel’s life today, as contrasted to her upbringing within a seemingly disparate family, is serene and, by all indications, healthy and positive. Born after her grandfather ended his life, there isn’t enough of his literary output and illness to make Kopple’s film reach the dramatic heights of her other works (Harlan County USA, American Dream). Kopple deftly intersperses footage of Margaux’ modeling, acting and swinging lifestyle, Mariel’s father’s consuming love for hunting and fishing, her older sister Muffet’s constant struggle with mental illness with the current and contrary life she now has with a boyfriend and daughter. Without the importance of Ernest, there isn’t enough to capture our attention. However, the significance and enlightenment of mental illness should be taken seriously and hopefully, this film will alert many of us to it’s crucial message. It opens today in various theatres and will be shown on producer Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network in 2014. 2 Bagels out of 4

Frances Allen Desert Roundup
By some estimates, there are nearly 2,000 fundraising events presented each year in the Coachella Valley, most of them held during the 8-month season beginning in October and lasting through the following May. This year’s traditional opening bash was the annual Dinner in the Canyons to aid the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum and incorporating the tribe’s spirit of hospitality and oneness with nature and the local surrounding residents. True, the Native Americans who populated our Desert never had white-table-cloth meals, but the food shared years ago was served al fresco as was last month’s catered affair, though it was not cooked over an open campfire, but prepared within a large catering tent. This year the headline musical performers were the group known as MATOU, a collaboration Amara Pate of six Native American and Maori performers, preMiss Agua Caliente senting a blend of flute music and Maori chants. Located at 219 S. Palm Canyon Dr. in Palm Springs, the museum offers engaging exhibitions, educational programs and distinctive cultural events. It is also the first Native American museum to be part of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution Affiliates Program, providing opportunities to share resources in programming, collections, scholarships and technical expertise as well as entitling the museum to bring world-acclaimed exhibitions to the Coachella Valley. The museum is open free to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. ****** Special kudos to Desert AIDS Project, a non-profit whose activities have been featured many times in this column over the past years. Not only does 2013 mark the beginning of the 30th year of HIV/AIDS support services provided by the organization – care, prevention and advocacy services – Desert AIDS Project has recently been chosen as one of the peer-reviewed organizations in the category “Top 20 HIV/AIDS Charities” in the nation. The Web site About.com – a top 40 U.S. Web site, bestowed the recognition. Desert AIDS Project was selected as one of only a small handful of HIV/AIDS charities that met a set of standards including spending at least 75 percent of its cash budget on bona fide programs, raising $100 for every $15 spent fundraising, and operating with complete financial transparency. You can find out more about this nationally recognized organization and its services by calling 760-323-2118.

UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE P R O C E E D I N G AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, cashier's check drawn on a state or national bank, check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, or savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state will be held by the duly appointed trustee as shown below, of all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described below. P U B L I C N OT I C E S disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagee’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holder's rights against the real property only. THIS NOTICE IS SENT FOR THE PURPOSE OF COLLECTING A DEBT. THIS FIRM IS ATTEMPTING TO COLLECT A DEBT ON BEHALF OF THE HOLDER AND OWNER OF THE NOTE. ANY I N F O R M AT I O N OBTAINED BY OR PROVIDED TO THIS FIRM OR THE CREDITOR WILL BE USED FOR THAT PURPOSE. As required by law, you are hereby notified that a negative credit report reflecting on your credit record may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligations. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should
be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 13-12191. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. From the Publisher CLIF SMITH OBAMA, SIBELIUS, REID – COMPULSION V. CHOICE Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal lead editorial by Daniel Henninger laid it out plain and simple: the seismic difference between traditional Democrats and today’s “progressives” can be summarized in one word, “compulsion.” Gone is the liberal Democratic Party tradition of strong support for the needy, access to our economic system and protection of the individual while supportively working within a free enterprise system. That philosophy, originated (believe or not by Republican Herbert Hoover) but implemented by Franklin D. Roosevelt, has been embraced by both political parties for nearly half a century. Democrats may carp that Republicans want to starve kids, pollute the environment and deny health care to old people, but that is not and has never been true. The principle of a viable “safety net” is embedded in our national psyche not to be removed. No. The debate between the two major parties has mostly been over the scope of the “safety net” and how to pay for it. Not the case today. As Henninger demonstrates, today’s “Democrats” have renamed themselves “progressives” and are marching through our nation implementing compulsion. Whether it is light bulbs, toilets, washing machines, financial services, energy or now health care, gone is the notion that the people will be left alone to decide for themselves how to live, what to buy, where to live, how to bank, what medical services they can or must purchase. (A woman carrying a baby to term or not seems to be the only real “choice” left.) Apparently, about half the working-age population thinks this is just fine. The U.S. Census reported this week that more in the United States are receiving means-tested federal government benefits than are in the work force full-time. These are the soldiers of the revolution. This is the “progressive” revolution that now dominates and controls our federal government, the government of California, New York, Illinois and elsewhere. That political label, “progressive,” originated around the turn of the 20th Century and meant individual control of government via the initiative, recall and referendum. Its leaders were Theodore Roosevelt of New York and Hiram Johnson of California. The “progressive” movement was a reaction to big business control of government. The current version turns the notion on its head. Today, it is government that is in control and we, the people, are losing whatever control we thought we had. We have no control over national finances, debt, obligations or borders. When two U.S. senators, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah, tried to stop or slow down our plunge into national bankruptcy via Obamacare, they got blasted by the mainstream media, all of the Democrats and a good portion of Republicans. What about our supposed right of “free speech”? Just try it. If you oppose Obama’s policies, or even question them, the Internal Revenue Service comes after you. How does the Obama Administration know you oppose their policies? They read your emails, listen to your phone calls, track your internet use and check out who your friends and correspondents are. If they don’t like what you say or write, in marches the IRS. Don’t believe that? Read the mainstream media. It’s happening. Try NBC and L.A. Times. What does the Obama Administration do with this information? Are you getting audited by the IRS? Turned down for a loan? Children denied admission to colleges? Your business lose a contract? “Outed” to one of their political pressure groups because you made a campaign contribution to something you believe in? Harassed, hounded, denounced, picketed? It’s all happening. You think this is a coincidence? What will happen to you under Obamacare when you go to a hospital? Will they check a list of “us” and “them” to decide whether to treat you? Will they “lose your records”? Will you be told: “Your policy doesn’t cover this procedure” or “You are not eligible to be seen by this doctor or that”? The facts about compulsion are glaringly obvious: Obamacare, energy decisions, shutting down clean coal, blocking cheap energy, government financial takeovers, the National Security Agency snooping, abuse by the Internal Revenue Service are not matters of opinion. Yesterday, we learned that the NSA has wire-tapped Google and Yahoo (plus the Pope and everyone else). So much for gmail and yahoomail. This condition has never existed in the United States–more people on government welfare than are working, more debt than we can possibly sustain, a national attitude of “dictate, dictate, dictate” from on high. “You will do as we say or you will be fined, taxed, denied healthcare, ostracized and maybe imprisoned.” That is what today’s “progressive” movement is all about. Compulsion. Elimination of choice. Elimination of freedom. It is not the movement of Theodore Roosevelt, Hiram Johnson, John Kennedy, Pat Brown, Stanley Mosk or even Bill Clinton. But it is the politics of Barack Obama and his mentors Bill Ayres, Saul Alinsky and Frank Marshall Davis. Go read about them for yourselves, see where their policies came from, compare that with where we are going today and make up your own minds. If you are persuaded by facts, not personal attacks and trite name-calling, you will see the truth. Some of you will like it because that is your philosophy. We suspect, however, that most will not. That is the message of “progressivism” today and it is enveloping all of us.
Rabbi Jacob Pressman NINETY FOUR AND STILL CHUGGING ALONG My 94th birthday has come and gone. I could not help feeling surprise and wonder at reaching this august age. It impressed me with the fact that life feels no different. If anything, life feels more precious because it is so surprising to me that I reached this level. My faculties are all a little older, of course. My hearing is less acute, my eyesight is less sharp. Indeed, I find that my left eye is less clear than my right. Winking with my eyes, I find the world looks a little different through each other. Sometimes at night, I lie upon my pillow, stare at the pictures hanging on the opposite wall and marvel at that distance that the brain melts both eyes into one vision. I’m surprised and grateful that the senses, which connect me with the world outside me, are performing as well as they are. I have been doing so these 94 long years. It is my senses that prove to me that I am still alive and still connected with the world around me. 94 years seems an incredibly long time for these sensitive instruments still to be doing their job. I thank my Heavenly Father for keeping me connected by those senses to the great world around me. I pray each day that He continue to do so for just a few more years...100 being a nice round figure. At which time, I hope still to be writing this column.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR I would like to ask the Beverly Hills City Council to demand that Time Warner Cable cease accepting the transmissions of Al Jazeera, a news media based in Doha (Qatar). There are enough anti-Semitic stands as well as anti-America groups in this country, so it would be absurd to have them further express their ideas through our media. We don't need news from a station obviously biased. The most recent grievous action was at an international swimming meet in Doha where Israeli swimmers were involved. Flags were placed on each of the participant's diving benches except, you guessed it, the Israeli flag for the Israeli competitors. Need more proof ? If the request doesn’t work, then the City should cancel its contract with Time Warner Cable and open the doors to other carriers (e.g. Comcast). Pablo Nankin, MD
