Beverly Hills’ area entrepreneur and socialite Kathryn Sexton BrownPhillips, 89, died Nov. 2, at the Motion Picture & Television Fund residence in Woodland Hills. Born in Florida, she grew up in Chicago and later Los Angeles, graduating from Van Nuys High School and Immaculate Heart College. She established the Kay Brown Beauty School while married to her first husband, Phillip P. Brown, CEO/founder of California Steel & Tube. Brown-Phillips later married Hollywood make-up artist Webster C.

Phillips, whose work with stars from John Barrymore, Greta Garbo, and Clark Gable to Ed Asner was legendary, and recognized as “show biz man of the year” by the Southern California Motion Picture Council. She was a founding member of the Music Center’s Blue Ribbon and the International Committee of the LA Philharmonic. Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, consider the Macular Degeneration Partnership of the Discovery Eye Foundation, Pet Harbor in Gardena and Motion Picture & Television Fund.

Behind the construction fences, a pond is beginning to emerge! After the pond ground-breaking in October, contractors have been hard at work to complete the restoration project in time for Beverly Hills' Centennial Celebration that kicks off in January. The beautiful park is the first of the 23 parks on Santa Monica Boulevard to begin the restoration process. New UCLA Center To Work With U.S. Military On Challenges Of Healing Wounded Warriors UCLA has launched the first university-based military medicine center on the West Coast, thanks to a generous donation from two sons in honor of their father, the inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist Ronald A. Katz. Thanks to Ronald A. Katz’ vision and generosity in spearheading the founding of UCLA’s Operation Mend—a partnership among Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas and the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System— nearly 100 severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan warriors and their families have been helped. Now, The Ronald A. Katz Center for Collaborative Military Medicine, established by an initial $2 million gift from Todd and Randy Katz and their families, will work with the U.S. military to address the challenges of healing and caring for the nation’s most critically wounded warriors. The center will function as a clearinghouse for all military medical needs, a one-stop shop providing access to medical care, support programs and

It will focus on enhancing treatment protocols for craniofacial reconstruction, burn repair, limb reconstruction, hand and face transplantation, traumatic brain injury and other critical areas prioritized by the military.

The new center, which will reside within the UCLA Health System and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, will be led by its first appointed executive director, Peter Chiarelli, the retired four-star general who served as the 32nd vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army from Aug. 2008 through Jan. 2012. “This center will address the unique clinical challenges posed by battlefield trauma and enhance the standard of care within military medicine through a dedicated and focused partnership among the various branches of the U.S. military, UCLA Health System and the Geffen School,” Chiarelli said. “This new center will leverage and maximize the university’s brain trust of knowledge, experience, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit to address and tackle the challenges of military medicine. On Celebrity Apologies, Not Having Friends At Work Dear Dr. Fran: It seems so many public figures and celebrities are doing wrong things and then apologizing. What makes some apologies acceptable while other public apologies have not been well received? Brad P. A. Dear Brad: From as young as 4years-old, I teach children the difference between saying you’re sorry so you won’t get in trouble, and saying it like you mean it. Accountability is one of the most important ethical values a parent can instill in a child. Most young children get into the habit of quickly saying “sorry” by rote to get their parents off their backs. Most adults will only accept an apology if they feel it was delivered with genuine sincerity. • Mel Gibson, when arrested for a DUI, spouted sexist and antiSemitic remarks. His explanation for his disgusting behavior didn’t necessarily help his cause. • David Letterman on The Late Show showed his serious side when apologizing to his wife and staff for his affairs. He wasn’t his usual jokester; and we liked the sincerity we saw. • It’s been 15 years since Hugh Grant got arrested after hooking up with a Hollywood prostitute. When it came to apologizing, Hugh did it right. He went on The Tonight Show and just ‘fessed up. • Kobe Bryant was accused of sexually assaulting a female hotel employee in Colorado in 2003. Bryant argued the sex was consensual and the charge was ultimately dropped. Kobe made a public

Couldn’t hurt that he bought his wife, Vanessa, a $4 million ring. • Tiger Woods, on the other hand, apologized profusely for his infidelity. When the extent of his cheating with numerous women outside of his marriage was revealed, his fans did not forgive so quickly. Nor, did his wife and mother of his two young children. He has never regained the royal position he once held in the eyes of the public. Q. Dear Dr. Fran: What are the drawbacks of not having friends at work? Sam N. A. Dear Sam: Are you friendless? Some people prefer it this way while others pine for a companion behind the line of fire. One of the main drawbacks of not having friends at work is a feeling of isolation and loneliness. When it comes to people, two is a lot more than one plus one. Not having friends at work can affect performance. The person may feel a lack of confidence and insecurity that can reduce productivity. On the other hand, some may argue that not having friends at work allows you to focus all your energy and attention on the work itself. I treated a patient who didn’t

have friends at work because he had poor social skills. He misread social cues and often his attempts to be humorous were misunderstood as hostility. Co-workers didn’t want to be his friend. He was in a high-level supervisory position that required offering supervision guidance to his staff. His inability to make and sustain friendships at work ultimately worked against him. He was not offered advancement and when the economy forced his company to downsize he was one of the first to go. Benefits to having friends at work include: having a partner who understands the characters and big picture with whom to debrief stressful days; having a friend/colleague to support you at times of work conflict; and having a lunch partner. I think the best criteria for choosing a “work friend” is honesty, sincerity, integrity, character and loyalty. It is not necessarily bad for managers to be friends with people they manage or vice versa. As long as the boundaries are clearly stated and adhered to, things can go well. Boundaries may include, “we will not discuss work outside of the office” or “we commit to open, straight-talk honesty when it comes to the job.” People need to be free to discuss anything openly. Father Haydu is the international director of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museum. His first book, published by Liguori Publications, blends the art with the meditation practices of St. Ignatius of Loyola. “There are 30 works of art arranged according to the work of St. Ignatius,” he said. Crescent Drive merchants were shocked Monday morning. “I had three customers this morning,” said Rita Kevorkian of Beverly Custom Cleaners. “I wanted to cry.” Space is leased to the dealership at a cost of $78 per car. Parking officials miscalculated the inventory, which surged as the end of the year approaches. With a base salary at $114,008.04, the property manager is responsible for all 40 of the commercial properties the City leases. Most of those are attached to public parking structures in the Business Triangle. Lavender is responsible for marketing, negotiating and leasing available space, administering lease agreements, customer service, property inspections and managing construction. Tenants began calling Vice Mayor Lili Bosse Tuesday morning to complain that the public parking structure had “Lot Full” sign in front and that business had slowed to a standstill. Regular customers were being turned away. After receiving calls from Bosse, Chad Lynn, the director of parking operations, began to have cars moved to other parking lots to free up parking spaces for the tenants. Valets were positioned to facilitate parking. “We should have talked with the tenants, we didn’t, and this was a mistake on our part that will be corrected as we move forward,” said Lynn. The oversight had a major impact on the small businesses. “When I lose business for a day,” said Beverly Hills Market owner Shahram Saeedian, “it affects me for a month. The North Crescent street closures for the opening of the Wallis and last year’s skating ring had already severely affected business in the small shopping area. No one at the City had informed the tenants of the maintenance decisions, leaving them completely in the dark about why the lot was full.

Book Thief Is Testament To Ordinary People’s Goodness, Power Of Words

Alumni of Beverly Hills’ Good Shepherd Catholic School, Quentin Casalenuovo and Ramon Sison will be featured in the Loyola High School production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, opening today at the school, 1901 Venice Blvd. A production of the school’s Hannon Theatre Company, the show, helmed by Artistic Director Walter Wolfe, will tap into the avantgarde roots of the 1938 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, staying true to Wilder’s original spareset design and universal message as well as adding an audience-inclusive thrust stage.

The 25-member crew built a bare thruststyle stage with seating on three sides. The audience, flanked by the ensemble and principal characters throughout the performance, is literally immersed in the production throughout the entire play. Performances in the school’s Hannon Theatre will be today, Thursday, Nov. 21 and Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.; tomorrow and Sunday at 2 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. Tickets at $15 each are available at www.loyolahs.edu.

In the new movie Book Thief, a shy, reticent young girl Leisel, stands at the grave of her young brother who has just died. The cemetery is cold and damp and there is no sign of a grassy knoll. She picks up a book left behind by the gravediggers and hides it under her coat. Her mother, distraught and defeated, sends her to an orphanage where she is adopted by a German couple, Hans and Rosa, (played brilliantly by Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson). She is shown to her room by a non-nonsense Rosa and visited by the understanding and compassionate Hans. He notices the book and Leisel asks him to read it to her. It is a gravedigger’s handbook. She loves hearing the words and asks him to read it to her again. Although Leisel can’t read, she knows the words in books will transport her imagination to a better place. Kristellnacht, the infamous night of broken glass in 1938 begins and she attends a book burning with family and friends. She stays behind as everyone leaves and picks up a smoldering book and hides it under her coat. She asks Hans to read it to her at night. When things escalate, a Jewish refugee (Ben Schnetzer) comes to their doorstep and asks Hans to

Michael Petroni passionately adapted Markus Zusack’s highly successful novel of the same name. Assemblyman Tim Donnelly from San Bernardino County, arrives for a fundraiser fresh off his statewide bus tour. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill candidate. Donnelly has been traveling the state in a campaign bus talking with real, everyday people who are suffering in California – both the job creators and the jobless alike. And Donnelly is getting traction. Recent public polls show Californians remain concerned about jobs and the economy. These are problems which Democrats – who control every statewide office and both chambers of the legislature – have done very little to solve. While any Republican is considered the underdog in this race, events on both the state and national stage may give Donnelly an opening. He believes he will have no shortage of topics next year: the failure of Obamacare, disclosure about NSA spying on your phone and email records, and the IRS targeting average Americans. Donnelly has no illusions. Snatching the governor’s seat from a Democrat will be tough. He drew lots of flak as a founder of the largest Minuteman chapter in California, protesting illegal immigration and the federal government's refusal to block it. The centerpiece of the Western entrance to Beverly Hills, it made a huge splash in its inaugural years, stopping traffic with its changing lights. Featuring an 8-minute light show, the beautiful statue has

welcomed visitors to the City for many years. But the tile needs restoration, the lights are dimming and the spray must be rehabilitated. Atop the Merrill Gage sculpture of the Tongva Indian atop the fountain no longer spout water from his hands. The stone base, created by architect Ralph Flewelling, is cracked and stained. Without an angel donor to start construction, the project is stalled. OBAMACARE AND THE PHONE COMPANIES Ever try to fix a phone problem with AT&T or Verizon? Sure you have. Wasn’t that fun? Productive? Successful? Just try to move your office and switch your phones and cable TV connections. At The Courier, it took direct intervention by senior execs of AT&T to restore simple phone service. What if they make a mistake and disconnect your lines? How do you like being told that the phone number you’ve had for more than 30 years “is not in the system. We show you have no account” as you look at an outrageous bill with an account number and a phone number on it. Reality check –either pay or you have no phone service. Sure, eventually you will probably get it straightened out, but what happens if that is now your health care? How much time do you have during a heart attack or stroke? How much will the cancer grow while they look for your account number? Do we believe that the federal government will function better than AT&T or Verizon? AT&T has been at it for well over 120 years. First they were a monopoly, then they weren’t. Now they're reestablished as a virtual monopoly. At one time, we had a real PacBell with real people here in California, who seemed to be able to fix things and get things right pretty fast. What happens when the federal Obamacare system loses your account? What if your government-supplied or government-approved “plan” just doesn't cover whatever ails you? Or doesn’t OK the doctor who has treated you or the hospital you want to enter? What if your physician is not registered in the system? Or they get his or her I.D. number wrong? Or the code for the procedure wrong? What if your cardiologist is listed as an orthopedic surgeon and thus “authorization” to perform an angioplasty will be denied? Worse yet, what if you are among the 5 million Americans who were just told “No insurance.” That number is growing by millions, and millions more have been socked with massive rate hikes. That is a cure for a job losses and a bad economy? Higher healthcare premiums? This is all real. Everyone knows it. The excuse that “Well, you just don’t care about the 30 million people who did not have health insurance.” Honestly? Why is it fair for people with private, paid-for health insurance to lose theirs for any reason? It is not. But even if we sacrifice millions of paying customers allegedly to give the healthcare to the uninsured, what “assurance” is there that these “previously uninsured” will actually get anything? This is a big mess. It’s going to get worse. It should never have been adopted. Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee tried to block it, but failed. At least they tried. So, take your pick—the phone companies or the federal government. At least with competition, you can always choose another cell phone carrier. What do you do when the only carrier is the federal government? And they lose your account.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman MY INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORP. As I was traveling across town recently because three of my doctors could only see me on that particular day, I suddenly realized that one was born in Italy, one in Mexico, and one in the Ukraine. As I was processing that thought I called to mind that among my other doctors (being a collector), I have been treated by physicians (male and female) from Guadalajara, Czechoslovakia, and India, and am still alive. My grocer is from Iran, my shoe repair person from Italy, my barber from Sicily; many of the teachers in Pressman Academy are from Israel. My mother, father and fatherin-law were born in Russia and my mother-in-law in Rumania. Our American population is made up of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants from all the continents and our colors are the colors of the rainbow. Even the Native American Indians came to this continent from elsewhere. We are a heterogeneous nation, and I believe therein lies our greatness. It should behoove us, therefore, to be the most tolerant of peoples, but I fear we are not yet. Children at home hear deprecating, even hostile remarks by their parents and carry them into the classrooms and playgrounds where the cycle of prejudice, bullying, even violence continues on for another generation. Unless parents and grandparents show examples of respect and appreciation for all stripes of color, faith and ethnicity their dislike of the unlike will continue to perpetuate itself. Traveling to my medical appointments I was moved to thank the Almighty and the great Lady with the Lamp who symbolically welcomed us all here so that my physicians–all, of whatever birth– could keep me alive for so many years to breathe the blessed air of freedom, and write these columns uncensored.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Congratulations to the Beverly Hills Unified School District and the City for their victory in court over the matter concerning Metro's plans for a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. Metro can no longer hide behind false facts and reports that were and are based upon incomplete testing which was below industry standards. We in Beverly Hills never hid from the truth and, in fact, sought it because we value what is right and take seriously the safety of our children and citizens as well as our high quality of education and life. It is clear that Metro does not have those same concerns. The money spent on this fight is proving to be well worth it and those who disagree had better take a closer look at Metro for what it is. Metro has a history of pulling the wool over the eyes of Los Angeles, but here, it never had a chance. We were onto Metro from the beginning and thanks in a large part to The Courier, everything was laid bare for all to see. The court of law is about justice and proof.
