his project explores the relationship between the way people move between a space and the way they use it. Through the use of major and minor connections multiple circuits are formed that provide different user groups with unique experiences in some places and shared experiences in other places. The general use of the facility is as an off site classroom of creative and performing arts for the 10+ public schools in the neighborhood. Now more than ever as Philadelphia dissolves its public school system the need for a place to learn the arts is greater than ever. The school would offer students a chance to study the arts that have been cut from their public schools that lack the funding. This private facility would then offer a range of services from simply classroom space to local artist taught classes. Although the main program is centered around the arts for students in elementary and middle schools it will offer studio space for local and foreign artist studying and practicing in the Philadelphia area.

The explorations into the overall building form and site master plan started with an intense analysis of the surrounding areas. This included demographics, ecological concerns, historical events, crime rates, and local street art. This data from both the past and present went into the creation of the building also influencing the programs that would
be housed in it. As the program was further defined the building itself started to respond to the needs of the future occupants. Through the creation of individual circuits for each user group type, occupants would be able to move through the building on different pathways that would allow them to interact with different spaces in the
building or move through more public areas. The final design layout used the incorporation of smaller satellite buildings with a large central building which uses an atrium style to allow for large open spaces on the first floor and more intimate spaces as you move up through the floor levels.
08/Heller/Academic/Eroded Space
Much of the building program is devoted to the arts and teaching the arts. Though many people in the community and the city at large will be encourage to use the facility. Much of the events will still be art based, including gallery displays, presentations, and performing arts. The space is designed to allow for many different groups to use it. Above. Main atrium space during a galley opening. Left. View of multi-level library space. Below. Artist working on an installation.
Although most of the space is public and community space, the building allows for certain areas to be open 24/7 mostly to the resident artists, with private studios. The more public spaces will be primarily for the school and community events.

The area between the main and satellite buildings creates an inviting plaza that becomes an extension of the interior. This space is open to anyone that passes through and can serve as an gallery space for larger art installations.

hrough careful exploration of preexisting site conditions, the area and form of the project was derived from the needs of the community along with specific ecological site factors, i.e. shading conditions and air quality. The main structural system was adapted from the natural systems found in trees which allow for an integrated network for filtration and structure. According to the structural needs, combined with solar incidence, program needs and spacial characteristics the form creates a systematic relationship between interior and exterior conditions as seen in the dynamic framing.
14/Heller/Architecture/Baum/Bau
The overall form of the building came for a study of the site and the sun access that would be available on an annual basis. This gave us the basis for the location of urban gardens that could be used by the neighborhood and in some specific areas would be used to filter air coming from the BQE below the building. The height of the different parts of the building was also taken from this study, in essence the areas that were in the shadow the most were raised to meet the sun.

Primary Structure
The primary purpose of the new building and innovative structure is to bring toxic air from the highway below through an integrated filtering process and release clean air above to the street and pedestrian levels. The tree like structure allows for integration of filters while allowing for natural rising of the hot exhaust fumes form the highway below, this cuts down on the over cost of running the filtration system.
The above diagrams show how the microbial filtration system would be integrated into the gardening structure along the walkways in the building.
Solar exposure _adapted topography_max
The facade of the building provides a two fold benefit. It is integrated into the structure of the building supporting itself and the building at large. It was design in respect to the various daylighting needs of the program behind it, whether that be office, auditorium, classrooms, or commercial. The daylighting factor was calculated using Ecotect software and then applied to the facade system to determine how much or little the opening would become.

Nested Urbanism

ocated in the up-and-coming Youngsan district of Seoul, South Korea, this project opens the site to the larger infrastructural needs of the city, while creating occupiable structure that morphs architecture and landscape. It allows for buildings to become a landscape while infrastructure inhabits all levels of this thickened site depending on its speed. Transition between speed levels of transportation on the site becomes a design tool that connects the site and works on the urban scale of a larger city.

The initial design process started with a research into the way we drive cars. How fast we drive on what roads, determines how large the road must be. Conversely the size of the roads determines how much space is left over for buildings or landscape.
From our initial research we then started to look at the site as a whole that could be split into several main nodes that were determined via points of interest. Each point of interest was then given a weight or gravity an thus would effect its surrounds or other nodes in a different manor.
In the series of diagrams on the previous page we documented the different types of intersections found in highways and city roads around the world. They range from the simple cross intersection found in most city streets to the extremely complex and sometime artistic highways with their series of on and off ramps.
Once establishing our nodes we took our knowledge of road ways and began to craft a site that would be able to interact with these nodes and take a car from a high speeds road all the way to a parking lot and pedestrian walk way.
The ground plane of the site is left mostly untouched allowing for park space, farming, and most importantly nearly unobstructed views to and from the river. As each road approaches a tower it decreases in speed or goes below grade allowing for a safer pedestrian environment free of cars or high speed traffic.
26/Heller/Architecture/Nested Urbanism
The best way to experience the site is to drive through the many roads that weave through the buildings. Views of the towers and the park conditions offer a never before seen vista and experience to the drivers of Seoul downtown. Some of the most interesting views come from the many designed intersections where you could be on a low speed road crossing a highspeed road or pedestrian walk way.
28/Heller/Architecture/Nested Urbanism
Although the project may seem to have only a few buildings covering the entire site, most of the actual inhabitable space is found below grade. The buildings that blend and rise out of the landscape are all connected by a much larger series of underground structures which include, office, retail, roads, parking, and residential spaces. This leaves the ground plane free for park space, framing and clear views from the city to the river and vise versa.

ransformations for a new hotel and residential building in TriBeCa, NY. This project takes a new approach to the interaction between the typical hotel and apartment set-up. Through a system of balconies and divergent and convergent spaces the two programs move in and out of each other. This can be seen clearly in the facade as it torques, splits and combines. The effect allows the building to read as one continuous structure, hiding the individual units and giving the building a unique design.

new transit hub for a new form of transit. This project concentrated on the development of a new street car station that integrated existing metro, and bus lines, while allowing for large amounts of green and public spaces. The Hub was designed to the LEED Gold rating standard with innovative HVAC systems, solar and wind power generators integrated into the structure. Much of the program space is outside allowing for a new park to connected the areas north and south of Pennsylvania avenue, currently an extremely busy main artery leading in and out of the city but making it one of the more dangerous pedestrian crossings. As part of the a new pedestrian friendly mode of transit and creating a better connection from one side of the neighborhood to another our master planning strategy would divert car traffic around the pedestrian park and new transit hub. This would allow for safer walking from on side to the other, with the reduction of speeding motor vehicles. This plan would also allow for more unobstructed views of the US Capitol building.
36/Heller/Architecture/DC Transit Hub
38/Heller/Architecture/DC Transit Hub
The ever growing arches that are found throughout the project serve all manner of purpose from the main structure of the Hub to pedestrian bridge from one side of the site to the other. These series of arches were initially taken from the geometry found in the Metro station below the site. Our plan would expose the entrance to this station and create a gradual sloping ramp down to the station level. As the ramp comes up to ground level the arches grow until they are large enough to encompass the new transit hub as well as street car platforms. The structure of the arches are built much like the St. Luis Arch with a changing cross section made of ductal concrete making it very light and yet extremely strong. The structure also incorporates solar PV panels along the exterior of the arches as well as small wind generators in the smaller arches. All of this is to bring us up to LEED Gold standards and bring down the financial burden on the city.

ondon is the home to the 2012 Olympic Games. In conjunction with the summer games is the London Cultural Olympics, an equally important festival that showcases the heritage, achievements and character of all things Great Britain. Our Project is a temporary pavilion for Hyde Park intended to be raised and maintained throughout the summer of 2012. Composed of flexible towers encircling specific and interesting areas of the park, this project lies somewhere between art and architecture. The tower structure itself and the material draped between are designed to move in response to environmental conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, swaying in the wind, reflecting light, and catching rain water. The component-based wall surface creates three conditions (shown right), each corresponding to
programmatically distinct park features. The first component is made of aluminum whereby its large surface area creates a highly reflective wall. The third component is a light vinyl, responding to environmental conditions by billowing in the wind, filtering light and catching rain. The second piece is an intermediate composite of the two extremes.

hat defines a wall? This wall system came from an exploration of tensile networks and deformation of a standardized triangulated grid. The wall system allows for a regular system on one side and a deformed system on the other, controlling views of privacy. The system can be modified for specific conditions whether that be a facade or an installation.

s there a better way to listen to music? When we are in a public space it is customary to use headphones, but this can become irritating after a while. Computer speakers can annoy those around you, then what are we left with? This project explored the relationship to a person and their sound environment. Through design, fabrication and a little trial and error I created an isolation speaker system that allowed only the person directly below the speaker to hear. This also had to be something that could be a conversation piece in the office environment, giving it a design that would be modern yet somewhat unnoticeable to the passer by. The speaker system also functions as the replacement for the common Speakers desk task light.

ow do you knit and braid a building? How can sport influence construction and inspire the next generation of buildings? What if we could personalize and enhance architecture with bio-architecture and performance of our won bodies? This project was for the new shoe launch of Nike called FlyKnit, a shoe that is created by a single knit piece. Our studio was one of 6 around the world to be given the opportunity to construct an installation for the launch. Our installation took cues from the shoe itself becoming the worlds largest knit structure. The design came form sourcing running data that Nike provided. Conoid piece were then knit with different fabrics representing different data from the runners. Much of the design was then influenced by the actual fabrication techniques used. Final assembly on site saw much formfinding in the process as the end product was entirely held in tension.

new mid-rise mix use building in the heart of the Historic Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia. This building needed to be both contextual and modern. The design was inspired by the architecture along Fairmount Avenue, with brick and cast stone facade complimenting the surrounding architecture. 15 residential units have large windows to flood the loft-like interiors with natural light as well as views to the down town from the upper levels. The ground floor gourmet market and cafe will be a welcomed addition to the rapidly growing and redeveloping neighborhood. The work I produced for this project included interior renderings for both schematic design purposes as well as final marketing material for the individual units. As well as working closely with the lead architects to help produce permit and construction sets of drawings.

his addition and renovation to a 1960’s split level in the DC suburb of Falls Church for the Otis Family took what was a large house with many stairs and levels and made it into an easily accessible ranch style addition for the Otis’ to retire in. A new garage and master bedroom area was added in addition to a near entire renovation to the rest of the house to update living spaces and kitchen. The exterior was landscaped so the new portion of the house would fit seamlessly into the large hit top.
