What dental hygiene does for overall health

Brushing and flossing your teeth may save you extra sessions in the dentist’s chair each year, but the benefits of dental hygiene do not end with pearly whites. In fact, there’s a direct correla tion between oral hygiene and overall health.

Oral health offers clues about overall health, advises the Mayo Clinic. When a dentist or hygienist checks a per son’s mouth, he or she is getting a window into that person’s overall wellness — including if something is amiss.

Dental hygiene matters because,

without proper brushing and floss ing, bacteria in the mouth can grow unchecked. Over time, that bacteria can infiltrate and break down the soft tissues in the gums and teeth, eventu ally leading to decay and gum disease. Green wood Dental Care in Illinois states that the bacteria from the mouth could travel into the bloodstream and elsewhere, causing a host of issues.

There’s a high correlation between an unhealthy mouth and systemic diseases. The United Kingdom-based dental group Fulham Road Dental

indicates that gum disease is linked to heart problems, kidney diseases and certain types of cancer. Dentists who notice problems in their pa tients’ mouths may be able to predict potential illnesses elsewhere in the body, advising those patients to seek consultations with other healthcare providers.

Here’s a deeper look at some of the correlations between oral health and overall health, courtesy of the Mayo Clinic.

• Endocarditis: When bacteria or other germs from the mouth or an other part of the body spread through the bloodstream, they can attach to certain areas of the heart. This causes an infection in the inner lining of the heart chambers or valves.

• Pregnancy and birth complications: Periodontitis has been linked to

low birth weight and premature birth.

• Cardiovascular disease: While it’s not fully understood why, clogged arteries, stroke and heart disease may be linked to inflammation and infec tion caused by oral bacteria.

• Pneumonia: Bacteria in the mouth may be pulled into the lungs, where it can lead to respiratory ill ness, such as pneumonia.

It’s a two-way street with health and the mouth. Certain diseases can lead to issues in the mouth. HIV/ AIDS may cause mucosal lesions in the mouth; those with osteoporosis may have weakened periodontal bone and tooth loss; and research has shown that diabetes puts gum health at risk.

Individuals should make oral health a priority, as it has a significant effect on their overall health and well-being.

Understanding and living with sciatica

The largest nerve in the human body is the sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower back and travels through the back of each leg. Injury or pressure on this nerve can lead to a type of pain known as sciatica.

Sciatica can have an adverse effect on everyday life, causing pain that can radiate from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down the legs. People experiencing pain in these areas should consult a physician immediately, as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) notes that be tween 80 and 90 percent of people diagnosed with sciatica get better over time without surgery. Many typically feel better within several weeks of beginning treatment.

The first step toward diagnosing sciatica begins at home. People who learn to recognize potential symp toms of sciatica may be more likely to seek immediate treatment than

those who might mistake their pain for something else.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

The AAOS notes that sciatica may feel like a bad leg cramp that lasts for weeks before it goes away.

According to Spine-health.com, a property of the health publisher Veritas Health, sciatica pain is often described as burning, tingling or searing as opposed to a dull ache. In addition, pain resulting from sciatica may be worse when sitting, even though sharp pain associated with sciatica can make it difficult to stand up or walk. Numbness characterized by a “pins and needles” feeling, weakness or a burning or tingling sensation down the leg are some additional symptoms of sciatica.

What causes sciatica?

condition, which is relatively com mon among people older than 60, a narrowing of the spinal canal can contribute to sciatica.

• Piriformis syndrome: A muscle found deep within the buttocks, the piriformis connects the lower spine to the upper thighbone, running di rectly over the sciatic nerve. Spasms in the piriformis can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, triggering sciatica.

Treating sciatica

Sciatica often can be treated suc cessfully without surgery. Doctors may recommend applying heat and/ or ice packs for acute sciatic pain. In addition, over-the-counter and prescription pain medications can effectively reduce or relieve sciatic pain.
