Pets of the Week Molly
Molly is a nice dog. She was found as a stray and (we hope!) she is happy to be with us where she is being taken care of. She is content and well adjusted. She is just a nice, old lab. Not good with cats though!
Blue
Blue is a sweet, loving, 115 pound Dogo Argintino. He is good with kids (but does get excited and jumps), curious but not aggressive towards cats, and loves to socialize with our other dogs. Although he is deaf, he knows sit and lay down hand signals. He would need to go to a home where his hearing loss doesn’t put him in danger as he cannot hear people calling for him, cars driving, etc.
Orange Crush
Orange Crush loves to play and get pet and play some more. He likes his toys and anything else he can get his paws on. He is very sweet. He constantly reaches through his kennel and attempts to play with his neighbors and people that are near him. He is a very sweet younger cat with beautiful orange fur.
Fudge
This little black beauty is Fudge, she is approximately 6 weeks old, and she is very friendly. She was found with her mother and is in the process of being weaned.
Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets. To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it. Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS. Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!

Readers typically are easy to shop for come the holiday season, when shoppers stuck on what to get a friend or family member can always fall back on a book or two if they know their loved one likes to get lost in a good book. But books aren’t the only gifts shoppers can give the readers on their lists this holiday season. The following are a few gift ideas no book lover can balk at. • E-reader: Before buying an e-reader, shoppers may want to first learn where the intended recipient of this thoughtful gift stands on the book versus e-reader debate. Some book lovers feel a sentimental attachment to traditional books, while others love the versatility of e-readers, many of which serve as tablets that allow users to peruse the Internet, play games and, of course, read books. If your friend or family member does not have an aversion to e-readers, then this might make the ideal gift. The price of e-readers varies depending on their capabilities, but you can expect to spend anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars depending on which model you ultimately choose. • Storage: For those readers who prefer traditional books, a new bookshelf can help them store their favorite titles. Books take up a lot of space, and avid readers tend to buy many new books each year, so homeowners and apartment dwellers alike will no doubt appreciate the extra space to store their collections. But even e-reader enthusiasts may find their storage filling
up faster than they might have liked. To remedy that problem, holiday shoppers can buy a Wi-Drive with ample extra storage space so readers who keep both books and movies on their e-readers and tablets have plenty of extra space to store all of those new books they plan to read in the coming year. • Decorative bookends: Those who have a passion for books and home décor might appreciate a unique set of handcrafted bookends to store the books they keep on their desks or those they keep out as decorative accents that guests can enjoy when visiting. Such gifts will please your friends or family members who have a flare for interior decorating while also appealing to their love of literature. • Book club membership: A membership to a Book of the Month Club may be right up the alleys of those readers who read too fast to join a local reading group or simply don’t have the time to devote to a community book club. Such memberships often sell classic titles and the latest bestsellers at a fraction of the cost of the publisher-established prices, and members typically can order as many books as they would like. This can be a great way for readers to find new titles and keep the books coming in without breaking the bank. Avid readers are passionate about their books, and holiday shoppers can feed those passions by giving their favorite readers gifts that indulge their love of literature this holiday season.

The Youngsters
C
hildren can actually be one of the easiest groups to please because they will often tell you exactly what they hope to receive on Christmas morning.
Whether it’s the next big video game or the new talking animal fad, you have likely been given an extensive list of potential presents this holiday season. But how do you filter through it to make sure every gift returns a smile for your investment?
TODDLERS For 2- to 3-year-olds, it is often quantity over quality when it comes to Christmas gifts. These are the years you don’t necessarily have to break the bank for your holiday spending. A puzzle set with blocks or new toy instruments can be relatively inexpensive gifts that keep your toddler busy and entertained. Consider your child’s walking stage when choosing a gift. If they are able to sit upright with no problem, then a collection of toy zoo animals may be the perfect gift. Toddlers who have discovered the art of walking will enjoy a drag-along toy animal or vehicle. If you’re buying for another family, be sure to check with the parents first to avoid unwanted or duplicate toys.
YOUNG CHILDREN Finding the perfect gift for children between
the toddler and teenage years requires knowledge of what they’re interested in. This can be the most difficult age group to please. Generally, an outdoor activity of some type – water guns or yard games – can be a hit for those in this age group. For the tweens in your life, a paid ticket to the science center or children’s museum in your closest city may fit the bill. For the more outdoorsy recipients, you can find exploration or nature kits that will put their natural curiosity to good use.
TEENAGERS Hopefully the teenager in your life has discovered a hobby or sport about which they are passionate. Whether it be piano, football or model-making, there is a gift out there to match their creative skills. If they’ve just started picking up a new endeavor, maybe professional lessons or a digital how-to book may be the perfect gift to sharpen their skill set. The teenage years are also about curiosity, so finding a coffee-table photo book on their favorite recording artist or history subject will help them learn more while also enjoying bright, vibrant p hotos.

Don’t Forget Non-Profits
S
ome local organizations are focused not on selling products, but on improving the lives of disadvantaged community members. Nonprofit groups, soup kitchens and children advocacy organizations are all s eeking help this holiday season. And what they’re asking for is simply a hand. They need more manpower to achieve their goals and spread the word on their efforts.
LENDING YOUR SKILL SET
Can you spare a few hours every weekend in December? You may be asked to run errands or visit with people. Maybe deliver food or products to clients across town. Professionals in the creative services field can offer their skills free of charge as a holiday contribution. Developing a website, creating brochures or writing a mission statement for free can help your local group promote its missions. An accounting firm could offer to waive their preparation fees for the organization’s upcoming tax needs. A local radio station could provide a free advertising spot to a nonprofit. Locals helping locals will strengthen the community this holiday season.
FOOD DONATIONS
Why not spend your Christmas
spreading some holiday cheer – and delicious food? You can spend Christmas Eve cooking your favorite dish or baking some special cookies, then bring them to your local shelter on Christmas morning. Your gesture will surely be appreciated by the hungry, as well as by the shelter staff. And it is a simple act of kindness that can be turned into a tradition, passed on to children or replicated by your friends and family members.
CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS
You may find yourself short on time this holiday season, but maybe you have a few dollars to donate to a local organization. Your contribution could go a long way toward furthering the cause of a group near and dear to your heart. You can conveniently make online donations or in-person cash contributions. Either way, donating funds is a simple way to show your support while making a difference in the lives of those who need it.

The Aspiring Photographer
D
oes your grandpa spend every family get-together with a camera around his neck? Is your sister constantly sending out e-mails full of great photos of her children? This Christmas, give that amateur photographer in your life a gift they will put to great use as they snap away those lasting family memories. From extra gear to helpful accessories, the field of photography is an exciting one with many options for enhancing skills and furthering love of the art.
EXTRA STORAGE What’s worse than snapping some shots of a memorable moment when the “out of storage space” message appears on your camera? Photographers of all skill sets are always in need of extra space for photos, which you can give them with a high-storage memory card. For an extra touch, load up the memory card with special photographs that your recipient can transfer to another device. This meaningful gift can serve as a great add-on to a new camera or as a perfect stocking stuffer.
GIFT CARDS If you’re thinking of giving your photographer friend a gift card this Christmas, get
creative, Put some money toward a photo book that they could fill with their best shots. An assortment of online portfolio-builders are on the market, and most are easy to use and result in a polished, professional finished product. You can also give a gift card to the mobile application store of their choice. Both the Apple and Google app markets feature a wide array of photography-related apps for purchase. From convenient editing tools to how-to guides, your recipient will surely find something of high value through the use of your card.
EDITING SOFTWARE If your photo-snapping pal has turned from novice to serious, maybe it’s time they start editing and enhancing their own work. Many programs allow for just that, offering tips, tricks and tutorials for turning the standard photograph into a work of art. You can start with basic packages within the Adobe Creative Cloud – such as Photoshop or Illustrator – and let them build their skill levels. These programs have many add-on features available for advanced users that can absolutely transform the photography experience.

andmade holiday gifts or decorations around the house are a g uaranteed hit. Too often, we are consumed in gifting the latest video game, device or expensive electronic. Sometimes ‘de-digitizing’ our Christmas gifts can be a great way to reclaim the true spirit of the holidays.
Giving from the heart – and the hands – brings great joy to both the giver and receiver of special holiday gifts. And creating a tradition out of making handmade gifts and decorations will surely put children and adults in the holiday mindset. Some projects can be a bit time-consuming, especially considering busy school and work schedules. So start your handmade efforts in late November or early December to make sure they’re ready to be enjoyed in time.
TURN TOYS INTO ORNAMENTS
Special Holiday Gifts *shop today for uncles
Mon. - Sat. 10am - 5pm • 611 N. Main St.
Looking for a unique way to recycle smaller, unused toys? Transforming them into ornaments will help declutter your home while also creating a meaningful tree decoration. Simply use a needle and thread to stitch through and hang a soft toy. Insert small eyehooks into the top of your wooden toys for easy hanging.
Keep these special ornaments in a safe place every year and plan to give them to your children when they are old enough to move out and buy their own Christmas trees. You will create a lifetime of memories that can carry on for another generation to come.
HOMEMADE CHRISTMAS CARDS
This Christmas season, choose to spend a bit more time than money on the cards you send out. Find a ream of high-quality paper (which you can purchase for the price of one card) and pick up some inexpensive felt, yarn, buttons and glue. Then get creative. Fold a sheet of the paper in half and affix some buttons to the front in the shape of a snowman. Add a handwritten note to the inside of the card and glue some felt, cutout decorations, as well. Before you know it, you’ll have store-quality card at a fraction of the cost.

Husker the Mule: A Birthday Present Meet author Codi Vallery-Mills
About the Book Husker the Mule: A Birthday Present, is a western themed children’s book for kids ages 4 to 8 years-old. The book follows young Carter as he picks out his 8th birthday present – a horse! – from his Grandpa. He meets a red mule named Husker while at the ranch too, and even though the animal looks different from the horses, Carter wonders if Husker should be his birthday present. In this fun and wonderfully illustrated story, children will learn the importance of not judging someone by their differences and giving everyone a chance. The book is based on an actual real-life mule that belongs to the author’s family and is illustrated in watercolor by western artist Teri McTighe of Faith, S.D. It consists of 16 pages and is sold in paper back for $11.95. This book is also available on Amazon.com
