Dear Readers...

Newspapers in Education week was celebrated March 6-10, 2023. NIE, an initiative of the American Press Institute, inspires educators to incorporate newspapers in the classroom. As part of NIE week, the Black Hills Pioneer teamed up with Spearfish Creekside Elementary, Belle Fourche Middle School, Sturgis Williams Middle School & Whitewood Elementary 5th grade art students in an Ads by Kids special section.

This special project provided students information on the parts of a newspaper, the history of the Black Hills Pioneer, parts of an advertisement and how to design an ad. Students then had a chance to create their own ad for one of the sponsoring businesses.

Over 350 5th grade art students made hand drawn ads for this section. Those printed are just a small portion of the students creativity. Others will be posted online at bhpioneer.com and taken to participating businesses.

The Black Hills Pioneer is impressed with of all of the drawings and appreciates the efforts and enthusiasm of both the students and art teachers who spent countless hours brainstorming, editing, and submitting their work. Please turn the pages and enjoy the creativity and talents of our local students.
