AmongtheCluster2inPampanga,BecuranHigh SchoolistheonlyschoolthatImplementedtheNew DepartmentofEducation(DepEd)Memorandum (GenderResponsiveBasicEducationPolicy)afterit hadbeengivenfinalapprovalacrossallregionsand levels.

Studentswereoncetrappedinafour-cornerplace withaneedofconcealingtheiridentities,likea butterflyinsideitscocoonforbiddentobefreed.But astheworldcontinuestoevolveandthemindsof thepeopleunfold,slowlythecocoonbegantobreak thatmadethemwavetheirwingsproudlyuptothe sky.

The“GenderResponsiveBasicEducationPolicy” aimstoensurethatallLGBTQlearnersareprotected fromallformsof“Genderrelated”violence,abused exploitation,discrimination,andbullying.Thisis alsoforstudentstohaveafreedomofwilltoexpress theirgender,orientation,andidentity.

ThePrincipalofBHS,ErnestoS.Maninangeyes, wereopenedashesawagreatpotentialof implementingGenderInclusivityintoBHS.Now thePrincipalofBHShasnoregretonaddingthe memorandumintotheschool,ashewaspleasedwith theresult.

AsBHSopenedafriendlyorganizationforlearners whoarepartoftheLGBTQIA+(Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual,Transgender,Queer/Questioning,Intersex, Asexual,andmore)namedVibrantsouls.Fromthis groupthestudentsarenowabletofreelyexpress themselveswithlessdiscrimination.

Mr.NathanielGuevarra,theheadoftheVibrant Souls(LGBTIA+Org.),claimsthatstudentsofany gender,color,orsizearewelcome,giventhattheyare freetoexpresstheiridentitiesandparticipateinany activity.Thisisonewaytheycanexperience everyone'sacceptanceandwarmthtowardthem.Itis essentialforthemtoacceptthemselvesandtobefree fromexpressingthemselvesastheyseeaproperfit.

TheVibrantsoulsforLGBTofBecuranHighSchool donotfeelafraidofcomingoutofthecloset,asthe currentPresidentoftheVibrantSoulsclub,Trixie Mercadostated.Sheaddeditisbecauseallthe studentsareawarewiththerulesandregulationsof thememorandum.

JeromeLibunan,amemberoftheLGBTQIA+club stated"Itfeelsgoodthattherearepeoplewho supportsandgiveusthefreedomtoexpressourselves withoutanyprejudice"ashetalkedabouthowhefelt welcomedbecausehecanexpresshimselfinschool withoutanyprejudice.

Airaalsosharedthattheywerenolongerhesitantin showingoftheirtrueidentity,"Thefreedomtheyfelt intheclub,hasbeenbroughtinsideandoutsidethe school"sheadded.

LGBTQIAstudentsarenowallowedtowearuniform toidentifythemselvesofwhotheyare.

RecentlytheJuniorHighSchoolprominBHS allowedgaystoweargownsandlesbianstowearsuit andties.Forthehair,iftheyarepartofthe community,theyareallowedtogrowoftheirhair, accordingtoSirNathanieltheyshouldhavefreedom toexpresswhattheyreallyfeelandfortheytobepart ofanykindsofactivities.

Creative,isawordSirNathanieldescribeshisLGBT students,Hesaidthattheyareveryhelpfulinschool activitiessincetheorderhasbeenapprovedbyDepEd. HebelievedthatLGBTstudentshavebenefitsfor addingcolorstotheschool,astheyhaveapotentialto makeabeneficialchange.Heisalsoinfavorofcarrying outthememo.

Conclusion

Likeafishtryingtoclimbatree,itwasimpossiblefor LGBTQIA+studentstohavegenderinclusivity,but throughtimemadeitpossible.Wearestillstepsbehind fromachievinggenderequality,butwithschoolstaking astep,itcouldleadtoapositivechangeinoursociety.

ThevocalresistanceoftheChurch hashadlittleinfluenceonthis matter,butithascontributedtoa cultureofshameandsilence aroundsexandsexuality.This makesitdifficulttodevelopa comprehensivesexeducation curriculumthatcoversimportant topicslikesafesexandconsent. Instead,schoolsemphasize abstinenceandperpetuateoutdated genderrolesthatplaceaheavier responsibilityonwomen.

Providingyoungpeoplewiththe knowledgeandskillstheyneedto makeinformeddecisionsabouttheir sexualhealthiscrucialtoreducing theratesofteenagepregnancyand improvingtheoverallwell-beingof Filipinos.

ItistimeforthePhilippinesto abandonitsconservativeand cowardlyapproachtosexeducation andprioritizethehealthandwellbeingofitsyoungpeople.No amountoflecturesonabstinence orpurityceremonieswillstop youngpeoplefromhavingsex. Ratherthanleavingtheminthe dark,weshouldempowerthemwith knowledgeandencourage responsiblebehaviorearlyon.

RagingSeasand PollutedWaters: NavigatingInformation

Infact,4transgenderstudentsin MetroManilaarenotallowedtojoin thegraduationmarch,justbecauseof theirdresscodeandhaircut.Weall needtobeenlighten,it'snotaboutthe dresscode,it'saboutwhotheyareasa person.Theyalsowantedacceptance notjusttolerated.
