ENTRANCE
Luis Barragán is a Mexican architect well known for his emphasis on color, light, shadow, form and texture. Barragán was educated as an engineer but travelled through Spain and France which later influenced him to practice architecture. His time in Europe, and subsequently in Morroco, stimulated an interest in the native architecture of North Africa and the Mediterranean, which he related to construction in his own country. His architectural practice was based in Guadalajara from 1927 until 1936 when he moved to Mexico City until his death. His work has been called minimalist, but it is nonetheless rich in color and texture. Pure planes of stucco, adobe, timber, or even water, are his compositional elements, all interacting with nature. Barragán called himself a landscape architect, writing in the book, Contemporary Architects, “I believe that architects should design gardens to be used, as much as the houses they build, to develop a sense of beauty and the taste and inclination toward the fine arts and other spiritual values.”

The exterior of the building gives no hint of the playfulness that lies within the house. The entrance acts as a place of waiting and, at the same time, as a space where the senses are prepared. The sight, the smell, the touch and the hearing are placed in an expectant state by the direct action of a precise palette of materials, hardly varying, but generous with them: wood, stone and whitewashed walls. The entrance palette has the flexibility of being analogous with the closed door but complimentary when the door reveals the pink walls from the vestibule.

VESTIBULE
The architect uses natural light as a tool that provides slight variation of the same color when reflected onto surfaces in order to give the spaces a more monochromatic feeling, which one can experience in the vestibule through the pink walls. From other perspectives one can extract complimentary colors as you begin to fuse the warm wooden tones from the furniture & olive drapery, like that of the dinning area. The overall color palette in both these spaces is warm with hints of nature through the visual thresholds that offer cool tones.

Complimenting the natural occurring hues of the outdoor environment Barragรกn uses an analogous color palette to bring life into the terrace through the layered planes.

CONCLUSION
Much of the color palette used in this building is composed of hues that aim to compliment one another and are designed to be subtle pops of fun that are not over bearing or too powerful. Because of the way the architect only uses a small amount of these bold colors in contrast to the abundance of white walls is what makes his gestures so successful.

ABREU Color + Environment _ FILM ANALYSIS_M.4
FILM SUMMARY This scene is so beautiful because we get to see Edward as the hopeless romantic he really is. This moment is one that he refers to as his destiny. The scene stands still as one imagines life would when you have a revelation. Edward walks through the frozen chaotic performance completely captivated by Sandra. Although this scene is composed of warmer hues Sandra stands calm and composed in a spotlight wearing a blue dress that compliments her darker surroundings and reinforces the vision Edward is having of his destiny. The warmer hues of red could symbolize his passion, desire, and power to gain Sandra’s affections while the pale blue could aim to symbolize the fulfilment and peace Sandra would bring him as the love story unravels and we discover that he will only and has only ever loved her since the time he first saw her.

SCENE ANALYSIS This scene is one of the most prominent and memorable scenes in the entire film. Here we see Sandra and Edward laying in a field of daffodils he planted for her to symbolize his love and respect for her. It is a vivid scene because of the prominent color yellow which I believe symbolizes hope & optimism for his future with Sandra. Complimenting the yellow are hues of a subtle blue from Edwards suit that could possibly signify the commitment & loyalty he has for her in comparison to the soft neutral shades from Sandra’s dress. contrast of hue & value
Dadeland Mall’s Coach store includes an open plan with a minimalistic display approach. This approach includes walls that protrude inwards to allow for simple cast iron and suede lined wood shelving for new collections & prominent pieces. Storage spaces for pieces are also implemented into the design of the jewelry and broach display cases to provide clean lines and offer more space to the users to oat through the space. The open plan also offers a generous amount of space for lounge seating and helps to set the atmosphere of a luxury brand into motion.
The color palette of the store remains neutral, allowing for the merchandise to express the brand on its own, while also allowing for the exibility of all the seasons. The lighting throughout the store vividly illuminates and emphasizes all of the products and draws the eyes of the consumers to the merchandise and open displays. The contrast of value is most vividly evident in the choice of light and dark woods.
contrast of texture
Much of the contrast throughout the store comes from the contrast of materials and texture. The store successfully uses a combination of dark wood ooring to contrast the blonde wood display units, while also using gold trim to provide a further pop of metallic that is subtle yet playful. The rich materiality provides contrast and a level of sophistication that not all luxury handbag retailers provide. When you enter the space the lighting assists in providing a hierarchy and aims at providing a relaxed environment that is cozy & inviting.

COLOR THIS
M.11 COLOR + RENDERING YELLOW is the color of sunshine, hope, and happiness, has conflicting associations. The color yellow helps activate the memory, encourage communication, enhance vision, build confidence, and stimulate the nervous system. GRAY is the color of compromise - being neither black nor white, it is the transition between two non-colors. The closer gray gets to black, the more dramatic and mysterious it becomes. The closer it gets to silver or white, the more illuminating and lively it becomes. GREEN is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety.

DESCRIPTION I chose this color palette because I love the clean and fresh lines that are associated with a neutral palette & more specifically the color gray. To me gray is a timeless color that can be spruced up with great accent pieces to bring life into any space. Yellow is a color that I am fond of and find happiness in, therefore it only seemed fit to pick this palette so that I could use this specific color to animate the space.
Color + Balance
ANALOGOUS COLOR SCHEME This color palette can be described as an analogous color scheme because of the yellow-orange, yellow, and yellow-green hues that are next to each other on the color wheel. Yellow is the common color they all share making it the primary hue where the yellow-orange and yellow-green can be identified as the tertiary hues. In working with the strategy of 60-30-10 rule, the medium light shade of gray will become the dominant tint, consuming about 60% of the space while the darker tones of gray will fill up an additional 30%, and the remaining 10% will be dedicated to accent pieces in the hues of yellow and green.

EXPERIENCE + RESULTS This assignment was a fun exercise to put our knowledge to the test. I feel like the color palette I have chosen successfully works in harmony to create a warm and inviting space with both the clean lines and pops of fun I was aiming for. Using the 60-30-10 rule of thumb I believe the space is a realistic example of how to properly balance color in a space.
