Editor’s Letter

T

his letter is dedicated to a beautiful new discovery of mine: the Peace Pagoda centered in Battersea Park, London, built in 1985 by Japanese Buddhist monks as a shrine of world peace. Once in a while you might just happen upon a place that’s so very interesting that you just can’t draw yourself away from the beauty and intrigue of such a marvel. So is what happened to me not long ago, and this fascinating location made it my pick for the Editorial shoot in the October issue of BIBI GOES CHIC MAGAZINE. With time comes a love and appreciation for things that may have at once felt uncertain, and now they appear far greater. It is important to understand the notion of peace, of kindness, and most importantly of giving back. This short message is my way of giving back to the monks who have built the Peace Pagoda in support of peace and justice, as well as to Reverend Gyoro Nagase, who lives nearby and gives his time to taking care of the Pagoda. The regulars around the park will know that every early morning at sunrise, Rev. Nagase beats his drum and chants. Real peace from within is rare to find, and it feels almost magical. ________________

In this issue you will also find your monthly dose of trend overviews, with white as a color to wear through the fall being the one most focused on. White, as black, is a seasonless and timeless color, yet it is slightly harder to pull off come Fall and Winter. Reading on you will discover how to re-integrate whites into your fall wardrobe, and why they should be your staple piece. This month’s brand feature is on Klaus Kobec: a luxury-inspired and pocket-friendly watch and jewelry brand established in Germany. Making their way rapidly into fashion, this feature serves the purpose of introducing you to this beautiful brand ahead of time. The rest I will leave to you to discover… Enjoy the October issue of BIBI GOES CHIC MAGAZINE!

“Wearing a big coat, a vest, or a buttoned-up shirt may sound like dressing up for a job interview. Fall is the perfect time to go dig out those old pieces in the back of your wardrobe and revamp them. They may sound like typical boring pieces. But if you give it a bit of edge, the look will transform into a new type of sophistication. The type where classic and professional meets edgy and innovative.

THROUGH

THE LENS by Michael Edwards

DREAMBUILDER PRODUCTIONS The commercially minded marketing photographer has a decidedly different role than almost any other portrait photographer. The goal is not to please the subject, but rather to work in partnership with a crew (model, makeup artist, hair stylist, wardrobe assistant, etc) to please the client.

1

As a human being and as an artist, you would love for your model to be crazy about their pictures – but at the end of the day, that doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that you have a clear understanding of what the client is looking for. Because there will be a lot of different skill and experience levels reading this article, I will keep the points fairly general so you can apply them as is appropriate. Depending on the project, there might be separate people for the specific roles mentioned or a combination of all the roles might fall between the photographer and the model.

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Plan, plan, plan, and then plan some more!

Time is money! Your time and that of the makeup artist, hairstylist, the model, the wardrobe stylist, the venue etc. will all be best served and will appreciate the time you take to think through details. The more you can anticipate and head off potential issues that can cause delays, the more productive the crew will be and the more satisfying the experience. Whether

your crew is volunteer or hired, they will decide early on as to whether or not it is an experience they would like to do again. Plan your shots with the end in mind.

As much as possible, get a thorough understanding of the clients or creative directors vision for the images. Are they standalone? Do they need copy space? Are they a spread or a left-hand or right-hand insert? What is the tone of the shoot? Is it lighthearted, serious, sexy, romantic, etc.?

Plan the schedule.

If you are also the director of the shoot think through details about the shoot. How long will it be? Get the shot and move on.

Don’t get lost in the creative process. Plan the work and then work the plan! Have a shot list of images you know you want or need and make sure you check off your list so you don’t have regrets later over images you didn’t capture because you lost track or didn’t plan time sufficiently.

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE MODEL: Beautifully Invisible

These are not senior pictures or a family portrait; your job is to work as part of a team with the photographer, make-up artist, hair stylist, etc. to create an image for the client. Just like the other team members, you bring to the table your specific talents, knowledge and experience and that should all be used to enhance the product being sold. You are an actor!

38

Come prepared knowing your script – you may not be using words but you are still communicating an idea. Body language, facial expression and eyes can speak volumes either positively or negatively. A blank canvas

Ready to be painted on by the staff of the creative director. Just like any other profession, the more prepared and professional you are, and the easier you are to work with, the more work you will get. Be versatile and flexible

As much as possible, know the other roles of the team. Know how to do your own make up and what a wardrobe stylist does. Be familiar with all aspects of what happens on a photoshoot, and be attentive and engaged.

19 FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE CREW: Check your motives.

Are you there with your own agenda or are you there to support the vision of your team and make it come to life? Go the extra mile.

Sure, you have your own work to do, but a team player will not only look out for their own interests, they will also look after the

interests of the rest of the team. By helping individuals succeed in their tasks, the whole team will be more efficient and effective.

It’s a beautiful thing when a plan comes together in artistic expression and all of the individual parts work together like a fine tuned clock. So join the team, add your talents and let’s make some beautiful artistic fashion together!

Lead with excellence.

CREDITS

Develop a reputation as someone who always exhibits excellence. An excellent product is not only a reflection of skill but also a reflection of character. Many very talented people put out products that are sub-par which only reveals their lack of commitment to the cause.
