When
Conflict Is Your
Unexpected Friend
by Sam O’Neal Let’s get one thing straight: All groups experience conflict. It may be subtle—it may simmer below the surface and never boil over—but any time you gather imperfect people together and ask them to “do life” together on a regular basis, conflict will happen. People will get frustrated. Personalities will clash. Priorities will be questioned. Relationships will get strained. Surprisingly, these kinds of conflict aren’t always a negative occurrence in a small group. In fact, conflict can often produce growth and deeper relationships. When it’s handled correctly, that is. Obviously this is a big topic, and you don’t want to intentionally create conflict within your group for any reason. But when conflict
occurs, there are a few things you can do to take advantage of the situation. First, don’t attempt to eliminate conflict when it makes an appearance. That’s a common response for group leaders. If people start getting a little chippy or angry, many group leaders attempt to change the subject or somehow mediate the discussion in order to calm things down. But that’s not always the best response. Conflict usually happens because people are experiencing strong emotions. And strong emotions are a great catalyst for growth— they give the Holy Spirit some “purchase” to work with in a person’s heart. So, by squashing a conflict at the very beginning, you eliminate any chance for your group continued on page 20

We were created to be managers.
Manage
Stewardship comes down to this: doing the right things with what we’ve been given. Whether it’s money, time, relationships, or the environment, the key is to make thoughtful decisions rooted in biblical wisdom: How do I honor God with my money? Am I investing my time in the right things? How can I balance my various responsibilities? What does it really mean to love others first? What’s my role in caring for the earth?
Caring for All God Entrusted to Us by Micah Carter and Fred Luter Learn to faithfully manage and leverage resources—money, time, relationships, and the environment—for God’s mission. threadsmedia.com Our ability to be responsible managers is utterly dependent on God’s guidance. We need His wisdom to navigate the many competing opinions swirling around how we use our finances, how we spend our days, how we approach our relationships with others, and how we care for the environment in which we all live. We need practical advice for balancing and budgeting these gifts God has given us.
Manage is a small group study that examines the resources we’re responsible for and helps us:
• Recognize that money is a gift from God to be used wisely • Learn how to balance our time effectively and biblically • Strengthen our relationships with God and others • Safeguard the earth and all its inhabitants.

After all, how we manage the things in our care demonstrates our faithfulness to God’s mission and kingdom.

What’s the
Best Way to
Launch New
Groups? by Mark Howell What’s the best way to launch new small groups? I get asked this question a lot…probably more than any other. And for good reason, after all, who isn’t trying to increase the number of groups (and the number of people in groups) in their church? So what’s the answer? It’s not as easy as that. I could tell you what I think, but I’d rather lead you through a way of thinking about it so that you can make up your own mind. First, a couple assumptions: 1) There is no “problem-free.” This is a 12
very important realization. No matter what situation you’re wrestling with, all of the possible solutions have issues. All of them. There is no problem-free. You just have to choose which of the problem sets you’d rather have. 2) There’s an upside and a downside to everything. In some ways this is a corollary to the first assumption. It means that nothing is without something positive and something negative. You may want to argue that there are some purely negative things. I’ve not run into one but I’m not going to argue it. Just take it for what it is.
Three Common Methods of Launching New Groups Now the answer to the question: “What’s the best way to launch new small groups?” Remember that we’re going to walk through a way of determining that for your own situation. To do that, you need to know that there are three common ways that groups get started. The Old Fashioned Way: A leader is recruited (either from an existing small group or out of the congregation) and usually given some kind of training. Those who sign up to join a small group are assigned to the new leader once training is complete. A slight variation of this one is where people who would like to lead a small group can sign up to be trained. Either way, a leader is either recruited or signs up on their own. This method is probably the most familiar. Whether you’re a cell church, embrace the meta model, or are totally into affinity-based small groups, this is your method at its root. The Connection Event: An event is used to gather potential small group members. Then some process is used to sort prospective members by affinity and then help group members choose a leader from among themselves. This is often referred to as a “small group connection.” Popularized by Saddleback, this method has been used by many churches around the country. North Point’s GroupLink is a version of the idea that utilizes preselected leaders for the new groups. The HOST Strategy: Hosts (as opposed to “leaders”) are recruited to open their home and invite a few of
their friends to be part of the group. The recruiting process can be done by tapping the shoulders of the “usual suspects” or as a kind of invitation in the worship service itself. The way you recruit has an effect on who hosts and ultimately whose friends get invited. Once hosts are recruited and trained they’re frequently listed as open groups ready to receive unconnected people looking for a small group. This method was popularized as a part of the 40 Days of Purpose campaign.
Problem Sets Now that you know the three common ways that groups are started, let’s develop the problem sets for each of the solutions. The Old Fashioned Way • Hard to get apprentice leaders to leave their existing small group • Hard to find qualified leaders who are not currently in a small group • Hard to find enough leaders to provide the number of groups needed • Some who volunteer to lead have alternative motives The Connection Strategy • Uncertainty about the maturity or appropriateness of the person chosen to lead • Lack of control about the quality of the leader candidates • Those chosen to lead may be unwilling to commit to leading • Might necessitate an honest conversation if the group chooses someone with insurmountable issues continued on page 24

Jen Hatmaker has authored eight books, including Interrupted and A Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study. She and her husband planted Austin New Church in an economically and ethnically diverse, socially unique, urban area of the city in 2008. Do you feel trapped in the machine of excess? Jen Hatmaker was. Her friends were. And some might say that our culture is. Jen once considered herself unmotivated by the lure of prosperity, but upon being called “rich” by a child who was living in poverty, evidence to the contrary mounted, and a social experiment turned spiritual journey was born. This study will lead you through this same experiment, at whatever level you choose, in seven key areas: food, clothes, spending, media, possessions, waste, and stress. What’s the payoff for living such a deeply reduced life? It’s the discovery of a greatly increased God—a call toward Christ-like simplicity and generosity that transcends a social experiment to become a radically better existence. Bible Study Insider Info • Many suggestions in the Bible study came from feedback Jen received from people who read the book and were living out 7. • In Jen’s original 7 experiment, a group of her friends, nicknamed “The Council,” joined her in the experiment. • The video sessions were taped at Jen’s home in Austin, Texas. 16
Wonderstruck Awaken to the Nearness of God Do you ever feel like you’re going through the motions of faith? Sometimes we do and say the right things, but our hearts are far from God. We lose our sense of awe. But God says, “Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder” (Isaiah 29:14). The answer isn’t more faith, greater obedience, or extra spiritual disciplines. God responds by giving us Himself. Join Margaret Feinberg for this seven-session Bible study that will help you recognize the presence of God in the midst of your routine and discover joy in knowing you’re wildly loved. continued from page 6 members to make use of their strong feelings and reactions. Second, help people examine the roots of their strong feelings. Once you see that two or more people are reacting strongly to a topic, idea, or conversation, one of the best things you can do is simply point out what’s going on. “Rob, it seems like you’re passionate about this conversation. Why is that?” “Tina, I get the impression you’ve thought about this subject quite a bit. Is that right?” By giving your group members a chance to explore and articulate why they feel strongly about something, you can often diffuse a potentially painful situation. (People are less likely to argue pointlessly about something like alcohol, for example, when they know that someone in the group had an alcoholic father.) You also help group members get to know each other on a deeper level.
to argue pointlessly about a subject, don’t try to extinguish their conversation. Rather, ask them to continue it at another time so that the group can move back to the topic at hand. Again, this allows people to discuss deeper issues in private, which can increase relational bonds. Once again, I am not encouraging you to seek out conflict within your group. I also think there are times that conflict can be damaging—especially when people start to get mean or insulting. But for the most part, conflict isn’t something you should fear. Rather, it’s an event you can harness to improve the overall health of your group.
Third, don’t be afraid to step in when necessary. As a group leader, one of your main responsibilities is moderating a discussion. And sometimes that means stepping in to “table” a conversation until a later time. If group members are starting

Sleeping Giant is an intentional men’s strategy for moving men from merely “affiliated” to “activated” for the mission of your church. It includes four steps: Get In, Get Healthy, Get Strong, and Get Going. The first step in the spiritual pathway—Get In—is the catalytic funnel that (1) motivates men, (2) shares a vision, and (3) gets men into groups. The final stage is Get Going, in which healthy, strong, trained men are deployed to serve the church and carry out their mission in the world to aggressively share the gospel. The two middle steps are highlighted on the next page, with a few recommended resources for each stage. lifeway.com/kennyluck

Get Healthy The Get Healthy stage involves defining and meeting a man’s felt needs and helping him get a “win” that is meaningful to him. In a group context and with group safety and support, men need to go after core health in their own character and relationships first. This involves an open discussion of temptation and compromise (moral health), their views of women and marriage (marital health), their leadership in the home (family health), and how masculine friendship and accountability work (relational health).
Get Strong Once a church has defined and met the felt needs of a man, the transformational capital earned by the church in that man’s life needs to be spent on leadership development and the call for that man to Get Strong. Throughout the Get Strong courses, men will feel themselves going to the next level of commitment personally, spiritually, and practically in ministry. Strong spiritual formation leads to strong spiritual expression of the Great Commandment and Great Commission.

there really isn’t a problem-free solution. Which set would you rather have? There is power in story. Stories teach us and tell us truth. They inspire and challenge us. Stories can make us angry; they can make us cry. Stories shape us. They give us a way to tell others who we are. This is why we love movies. Simply put, a great movie can tell a story like nothing else. So why wouldn’t we, the church, celebrate and leverage the impact of movies to tell the greatest story ever told? LifeWay Films harness the power of great stories to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. With licenses starting at just $49, a movie is the perfect, cost-effective tool for your next community outreach or churchwide event.
Get Started with a Site License Why do you need a Site License? It is actually illegal to show a movie to a group of people without permission. A Site License from LifeWay Films gives your church permission to show a movie to your church. Site Licenses from LifeWay Films are good for up to a year and usuallly include a DVD copy of the movie, too.
