FELLOW EXPLORERS, Explore the Bible: Kids began as an answer to a need that our team heard over and over again from KidMin leaders like yourselves—“Give us a curriculum that immerses kids in the Bible!” As a mom of three kids and a former KidMin leader, I share this passion and urgency. God speaks through His Word and if we expect life transformation, not just behavior modification, we need to give kids a deeper dive into the Scriptures. The truth is, we want kids to love God’s Word so much that they “hide it away in their hearts” so that when pressures of life and choices present themselves, they remember the truth so well that they “may not sin against (Him).” As we prayed for wisdom in crafting a quality curriculum for kids, we began by asking this question: “How do we help empower leaders to teach the Bible to kids in an exciting and engaging way that will make kids want to dig deep?” My career background is education—specifically museum education, where object-based learning is one of the main teaching methods used in educational exhibit design. It’s used to evoke inductive study and discovery learning. Our team decided to implement these methods as an entry point to looking at the biblical text. For example, what can we learn from looking carefully at a boat that underwater archaeologists discovered at the bottom of the Sea of Galilee? A boat that is similar to the one Jesus and His disciples rode through the storm in one dark night? Can it help kids want to ask more questions, know more of the story, or even imagine what it may have been like to see Jesus calm the storm? More than that, how can it lead to a deeper understanding that Jesus is all-powerful all throughout Scripture?

Explore the Bible: Kids will take kids on a book-by-book, truth-by-truth journey through the living Word. Through Scripture study, cross-referencing, historical maps, interactive infographics, and object-based learning, kids will experience the Bible like never before. Get ready to take a deeper dive, immersing young souls in the Scriptures and watching life transformation happen before your very eyes. Get ready to open this love letter to all of us and show kids what their Maker wants them to see and hear from Him. Get ready to Explore the Bible! Joyfully,

J I F G Hebrews 1:1-4 The Book of Hebrews reveals and explains truths about Jesus that are not treated in depth in other Bible books. In Hebrews we learn much about Jesus as the great High Priest, the perfect Sacrifice, and the Mediator of the new covenant. These truths call for believers to endure in their devotion to Jesus Christ even in times of severe trials. These major themes are all present in seed form in Hebrews 1:1-4. Keep in mind that the writer of Hebrews was addressing a beloved group of people. Like most churches today, the group probably included some strong believers and some weak ones. Perhaps there were a few who professed faith in Christ but were not genuine believers. Some believers at the time Hebrews was written may have shown bold devotion in the past but now were wilting in the face of persecution. The biblical writer showed loving pastoral concern for his readers. He was concerned that some of them might decide the cost of discipleship was too high. He may have feared that some were ready to cave in and go back to Judaism and its practices. So, what is the remedy for weak faith? The remedy starts with a better understanding of God’s Word and what it means. The meat of God’s Word is the answer for faltering faith! It fuels our faith and drives us deeper in our devotion to Christ. The writer of Hebrews knew that if his readers understood who Jesus is and what Jesus has done for them, then they would stand strong and not waver. The same is true for us. When our hearts are set on Jesus and His Word, then we can walk in faith without wavering. The antidote for weak faith is spiritual strength. We can think of it as building our spiritual and theological muscles. Studying the Book of Hebrews under the Spirit’s guidance will fortify us for the challenges of our day.

POINTS TO EMPHASIZE IN HEBREWS CORE PASSAGE: Hebrews 1:1-4 • • • •

Hebrews 1:1-4 tells who Jesus is. Jesus is our communicator with God. Jesus made it possible for us to be forgiven. Jesus is all-powerful.

CHRIST IN CONTEXT The Book of Hebrews describes how Jesus fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament as the Son of God and the Son of man. Jesus gave His life as the final sacrifice for sin, establishing a new covenant between God and His people. He is our mediator, creator, high priest, and rescuer. He is perfect and reigns over all.

JESUS CALMED A STORM CONNECTION PASSAGES: Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25 CONNECTION STATEMENT: Jesus showed His power over nature because He is all-powerful.

A large crowd gathered near the Sea of Galilee to hear Jesus as He taught. The crowd filled the countryside. Jesus chose to sit in a boat on the sea to speak to the people. [Relate that voices carry across the water.] Jesus taught the people many things. He used parables, or stories, to teach the people. When evening came, Jesus said to His disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” Jesus and the disciples left the crowd behind and began to sail to the other side. Other boats sailed with them. Jesus moved to the back of the boat and lay down to rest on a cushion. Soon He was asleep. A big storm came up. Waves crashed over the boat, and the disciples were afraid. The disciples woke up Jesus and asked Him if He cared about them. Jesus spoke to the storm and the waves and wind became calm. “Why are you afraid?” Jesus asked the men. “Don’t you trust Me?” The men were afraid and surprised. They wondered who Jesus was that even the wind and waves obeyed Him.

PREPARE OPTION FOR PRE-READERS markers or small stickers • Print 2 copies of “Bible Components” (enhanced CD) and cut apart. • Place matching dots of colors or symbols or small stickers to the front side of matching papers. • Lay one set of papers faceup and the other facedown for kids to match.

• Invite the kids to take turns turning over two papers at a time. Kids will keep matches and turn over unmatched papers. • Encourage kids to read aloud the papers they turn over. • Guide kids to match paper colors together when all matches are made. • Comment: “These words and numbers are about a special book. What is that book? (Bible) Yes, the Bible. The Bible is one big story about God, divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Let’s learn some facts about the Old Testament first.” • Lead kids to read aloud the Old Testament facts. • Invite other kids to read aloud the New Testament facts. • Remark: “We will be exploring the Bible each week to learn what its message is to us. We should learn the basic information about the Bible first. The things we just read are the basics. Read over the Old Testament papers one more time. I’ll collect the papers and then ask a few questions to see what you remember.” • Allow kids to review papers and then collect them. • Quiz the kids about the information • Repeat the same activity using the New Testament information. • Conclude: “The Bible is the most important book. The Bible teaches us how to live, act, and how to have a relationship with God through Jesus.” OPTION FOR PRE-READERS • Invite the kids to take turns turning over one paper at a time and matching that paper to the one that is faceup. Kids will keep matches. • Read aloud each match. • Guide kids to match paper colors together when all matches are made. • Display and read aloud each Old Testament paper, briefly defining each term. • Invite kids to repeat each title after you. • Repeat the activity with the New Testament papers. • Lay out one set of papers faceup on the floor. • Invite kids to take turns choosing papers. • Whisper the word from the paper to the child and encourage him to say aloud his word or phrase. • Collect all papers. • Transition to Group Time.

OBSERVE (LOOKING AT AND NOTING DETAILS IN THE BIBLE) • Welcome kids and pray. • Invite the kids to read aloud the Hebrews poster information. (Pre-reader option: Read aloud the information.) • Say: “We’ll learn from the Book of Hebrews for the next several weeks. Let’s start with Hebrews 1:1.” • Invite a volunteer to read aloud Hebrews 1:1 or read aloud yourself. • Comment: “In Old Testament times, God spoke through prophets, people who told others what God wanted them to know. The prophets spoke at different times (festivals, major events, personal situations). God spoke in different ways (through clouds, to prophets, through events such as a famine). Listen to how God speaks to us now.” • Read aloud the first part of verse 2. • Continue: “After Jesus was born and grew, He was able to tell and teach people about God. God speaks to us now through Jesus’ words in the Bible. In some of our Bibles, Jesus’ words are noted in red letters.” • Distribute Explorer Guides, paper (cards for pre-readers), and markers. • Choose one option to do: ▸ Invite kids to list the descriptions of Jesus listed in verses 2-4. ▸ For pre-readers, invite kids to choose cards for you to read aloud. • Direct the kids to open their Explorer Guides to today’s session. • Guide the kids to use “8 Things Hebrews 1:1-4 Tells About Jesus” to check their answers. (Pre-reader option: Read aloud the list.) • State: “Is Jesus important? Yes! Jesus is very important. Jesus is allpowerful. Through Jesus, we can have a relationship with God. All people lost that relationship with God when Adam and Eve chose to disobey (sin) in the garden. In Old Testament times, the people gave sacrifices of animals and foods to have a relationship with God. A sacrifice is ‘a physical item (animal, grain, etc.) a person brings to God to express devotion, thanksgiving, and the need for forgiveness.’ God sent Jesus to earth to die as a way for us to have forgiveness and a relationship with God. No longer do we need to bring sacrifices to church. Jesus is our sacrifice. We are to love and respect Jesus while we follow what the Bible tells us to do and say. Remember, Jesus is all-powerful—He can do all things.” • Read aloud Hebrews 1:2a, inviting kids to repeat after you.

The world still has storms—from rain showers to flooding, capsizing waves on the seas and oceans, tornadoes, and hurricanes. We can help people after bad storms by going to help clean up, sending supplies, or sending money to purchase needed items such as food and water. Several groups such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and disaster relief teams go to assist people. Helpers can tell people about Jesus as they assist to meet the people’s needs. Ask the kids how they can help others when devastating storms happen.

Tell parents and kids about the free, downloadable Explore the Bible: Kids app for smart phones and iPad®. The app features an in-class feature along with activities for home. The app can help parents know what their child will learn each week. Kids can enjoy the fun activities and games as they review what they learned.
