Game Plan for Life r
by Joe Gibbs
Joe Gibbs has won the Super Bowl without taking a single hit. He’s won NASCAR championships and never drove over 80 mph. How did he do it? By finding the people who could make it happen for him. And he’s doing the same for you. He’s assembled experts in areas of life every man needs to learn more about (finance, God, and the Bible) and areas we should avoid (sin and addiction). This is a virtual dream team to help you create the ideal game plan for your life. Joe’s team of experts includes Ken Boa, Josh McDowell, Chuck Colson, John Lennox, Ron Blue, and Ravi Zacharias. Each of the six sessions includes video segments featuring Joe and the expert on that week’s topic, which include: • God. You are being scouted. • The Bible. The ultimate playbook. • Salvation. Making the team. • Creation. The enemy’s game plan. • Finances. The signing bonus. • Sin & Addiction. Playing hurt.

Game Plan for Life is a fantastic discipleship tool for any men’s ministry. But it’s also designed to be an outreach tool for the men in your community and circle of influence that may not know Jesus as Lord and Savior. This is not a typical Bible study. Joe’s life experience has broad appeal to all men (not just Christians). The study is easily understandable and applicable to every man’s life, regardless of age or background. Plus, it offers video of a behind-the-scenes look at Joe Gibbs Racing. Joe has even created a personal video invitation to do the study that you can e-mail to the men who need it. The Amazing Careers of Joe Gibbs Only a fortunate few can rise to the top in an elite, highly competitive profession. Joe Gibbs has done it twice—in two dramatically different sports: football and stock-car racing. He was the coach of the Washington Redskins during their decade of dominance in the 1980’s (and again from 2004-2008). Under his leadership, the Redskins won four NFC Championship titles and three Super Bowls. He’s also the owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, another dominant presence in NASCAR with three championships to his credit. But Joe is keenly aware that his legacy is not about what he does but Who he knows. And his passion is to lead other men to the Source of his life’s victories—Jesus Christ.

When Life Is Hard r by James MacDonald
James MacDonald’s teachings for this study came out of his personal struggles during a season of trials. His difficulties included a budget disaster in a multimillion dollar building project, a family crisis, friends’ tragedy, and a personal health issue. In fact, he preached the heart of this message while going through aggressive treatment for his cancer. He shares biblical truths and principles that helped him deal with the trials of life, which can also provide hope to all who are dealing with difficulties. This study will lead individuals and churches as a whole to understand the nature of trials in believers’ lives and how God uses hard times to teach and refine us. Everyone loves the fun and community of small group Bible studies. But many church leaders have begun to question the long-term value of these groups. Are the participants growing spiritually? Is every study biblically sound? Is there any rhyme or reason to choosing a particular study? We created Small Group Life to address these concerns. So if you’re ready for a small-group experience that is actually going to take you somewhere, it’s time to hop on board.

Why church leaders like Small Group Life Purposeful The what-are-we-gonna-do-this-quarter approach is creating a spiritual imbalance in many Christians. Small Group Life offers an intentional plan for spiritual formation.
Consistent Small Group Life follows the LifeWay Adult Ministry Strategy—Connect, Grow, Serve, Go. Every episode helps participants connect with God and each other, grow in their biblical knowledge, serve others in their community, and share the gospel.
Customizable Small Group Life is also available in downloadable PDFs or RTFs, so you can modify content for the specific needs of your church culture, vision, or unique language.
Affordable Each study will be available for $5.95. Each quarter’s newest study will have introductory pricing of $3.50 per copy.
Why group leaders like Small Group Life Host-driven No need to be a Bible scholar. Anyone can lead the group. Fun ice-breakers get the discussion going. Notes imbedded in each study help propel the conversation. Scripture notes after each scene provide additional insight. A leader guide in the back offers extra help. And you can download free videos for each session.
Flexible Complete the study in six or twelve weeks. Get it through the church or have it mailed directly to each participant’s home via subscription. Do the latest study or look online for past episodes that are relevant to your group’s current needs.
Streamlined Small groups told us that many studies contain too much information which is hard to get through in a reasonable meeting time. Small Group Life contains solid biblical content, but each session can be enjoyed in less than an hour.
Kid-friendly Free kids lessons can be downloaded from the Small Group Life Web site for each session. A follow-up is included in the adult piece to help parents reinforce the lesson with their kids.
Relevant Study notes are developed by Steve Gladen, small groups pastor for Saddleback Church.

The One-Man
Every Man You Reach or Don’t Reach Is a by Kenny Luck
One transformed man transforms many things. “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous,” (Romans 5:17-19, NIV). The flow of history emanates directly out of the character and conduct of two men: Adam and Jesus Christ. Their story is our story, and it still is the reality being played out today. Either men around the world are in Adam or men are in Jesus Christ. Consequently, men are either being disobedient to God or obedient to God; men are producing suffering for others or producing life for others; death is reigning or life and health are being created. Pick up a paper and track the suffering you see happening worldwide. It’s a leadership issue: the character of Adam or the character of Christ is prevailing in cultures around the globe producing conduct and choices which touch people in the blast zones of leadership.
Track the suffering in your own community and congregation. A quick study of the headlines and broken lives tells a tragic story of broken male leadership and impact. Fatherlessness, domestic violence, rape, divorce, political corruption, sex trafficking, prostitution, exploitation 14
of the vulnerable, tribalism, greed, materialism, and a plethora of “power” trips are just a few of the issues that stem from unchecked and ungodly male character. Male culture and leadership styles influence every social, political, domestic, economic, and religious infrastructure in existence worldwide. Sadly, millions of God’s men contribute to the waves of suffering versus serving to alleviate the suffering in their blast zones of influence. They are blending with their cultures, the “boy” is winning, the voice of the Holy Spirit is muted, and His fire is put out in their lives. The Holy Spirit is grieved as Christ’s followers lose critical battles and injustice flows unmitigated over millions daily around the world. People are suffering, and God is watching His boys do the damage.
Passing inspection? Scripture warns that God is “looking” for more from His sons. “The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the Garden of His delight. He looked for justice but saw bloodshed, He looked for righteousness but heard cries of distress,” (Isaiah 5:7, NIV). Then and now: • God is tracking the character and conduct of His men. • God is looking to see His character (justice, compassion and righteousness) reproduced in His men.
Effect
Box of Dynamite
• God knows that character is expressed in conduct that will either bring health or harm to those connected to His men. • God is tracking the influence of men for the sake of His own name and for the sake of those their character and conduct hurt. • God will judge His sons severely for how they treat people. (Just read the rest of Isaiah 5.) • God is a disappointed Father who does not wish to, but must now, chastise and discipline His own sons.
Are you tapping the blast zones of men? Every man ever created has a blast zone of influence. Men have been given by God, for better or for worse, the ability to produce life and death through their character and conduct, beginning with Adam and culminating in Jesus. The Holy Spirit took a group of men at Pentecost, saved them, filled them, changed them inside, and turned them loose to bring His health and life to a waiting world. It was a movement in time through yielded men. It was fresh movement not of the “letter” or of stale religion but of the “Spirit” which refreshed those who entered the blast zone, igniting life. God’s men knew this movement came from the inside out: “He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the
Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life,” (2 Corinthians 3:6 NIV). Like the men who were a part of the first massive explosion of the Spirit in the Book of Acts, men are not asked to do in your world what the Holy Spirit has not given you the character and power to accomplish. The problem today is that they feel under challenged, under supported, and undervalued by church leaders they are commissioned to support. The result? • weak infrastructures of leadership • lost skill sets to drive the mission and vision locally • “cultural” Christianity and “blending” with the world • less giving • more pain among the people (continued on page 19) 15

(continued from page 15) The Holy Spirit wants a culture of filled men fueling spiritual movement in His church, fulfilling its mission and vision alongside of you. And there is help. You cannot read the Old and New Testament and not see this blueprint of spiritual expansion. As for us, a simple decision needs to be made: are we going to build an intentional ministry to men that produces leaders to support the mission and vision God has called us to? Moses couldn’t handle it on his own. Joshua couldn’t. David was no dummy. Neither were Jesus and Paul. All of these leaders for God intentionally built strong infrastructures of men to fulfill the ministries for God they were called to complete.
What about you? The acid test of intentional men’s ministry is your personal workload. Jethro could see Moses collapsing and it didn’t have to be. Same goes for us. So let me stand in the place of Jethro and encourage you to build strong funnels that attract and serve the men connecting with your congregation. Let me also spur you to consider developing a life and leader development pathway to produce leaders who will help you carry the load. See our “Tip Box” (opposite page) to get started. Or make plans to get trained. Whatever you do, don’t neglect this powerful community of men around you God has provided for your benefit.
Your durability depends on it.

The Priestly Call of Parents Guiding Our Children’s Spiritual Formation . . . at Home
Parents, we’ve gotten pretty good at forming the athleticism of our children—sign them up for sports (maybe more than one), drive them to practice, attend every game, and celebrate the championship. It’s the arena that many parents, especially dads, feel most at home. But spiritual formation? That’s where we tend to drop the ball—passing it off to “professionals” at church. Yet which is more important for the lives of our children, forming their bodies or forming their souls? Perhaps we’ve abdicated our role as “spiritual coaches” for our children. Perhaps it’s time to get in the game.
Are parents called to lead their families in spiritual matters? In Deuteronomy 6:5-9 we read “Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love Him with all that’s in you, love Him with all you’ve got...Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.” (The Message) 22
by Glenn McClure
So what about this command from God to teach our children about Him? The command isn’t directed to the Sunday School teacher. It’s a message for parents! One reason we may not have entered our children’s spiritual lives is that we may not be taking our own spiritual lives seriously. You remember the old adage—you cannot give away what you don’t have. So the first step in helping form our children’s spirituality is to simply become authentic worshippers of Jesus ourselves. Seeing their parents pray, and hearing them talk about faith matters, paves the way for children to have spiritual discussions and interactions with their parents. Living out your faith in front of your family can be especially challenging for fathers. According to George Barna, only four out of ten men attend church on a given Sunday. Dan Erickson and Dan Schaffer write, “The typical adult male in our society is more likely to spend his Sundays watching sports on TV that attending a church service.” But there is a trickle-down effect for families when men neglect their own spiritual lives. One source states that when a mother comes to faith in Christ, the rest of her family follows 17 percent of the time. But when a father comes to faith, the rest of the family follows 93 percent of the time. Fathers can be a powerful influence in leading
their children to God. The role of both parents is vital, and men need to step up to the plate.
Where do we start? The Puritans, like earlier Jewish families, understood the great soul-forming power of the family. They perceived the home as “the church in miniature” and therefore a place to pray, worship, and focus on God. If “worship at home” is a new concept to you, you’re not alone. According to a poll conducted at my own church in 2008, only 27 percent of families had a regular time of worship together in the home. I’m not suggesting that parents conduct formal mini-church services at home. But there are an infinite number of ways to bring spirituality into your home, in both structured and freeflowing activities. Following are nine suggestions for family worship (and spiritual formation) that might sound like more fun than you expected. 1) Sharing meals together. Let each person share high points and low points of the day. Remember to bring yourself to the conversation, sharing appropriately the challenges and joys of your life. Speaking about how you trust God during a difficulty at work, or praising God for life’s blessings will model spiritual language for your young ones. You’ll be delighted to see how they enter the conversation as well!
2) Sing the Doxology at mealtime: “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below, Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.” 3) Pray Aaron’s Blessing over children at bedtime. Taken from Numbers 6:2426 “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. Amen.” (NIV) 4) Read Bible stories together as a family. This can be a daily or weekly activity, based on the age of your children. 5) Recite the Lord’s Prayer at bedtime and/or pray over the children. We also ask them “how can we pray for each other?” They learn that there are no silly prayer requests, that it all belongs. 6) Pray about world affairs. News events affect children more as they age, so let conflicts, disasters, and other news stories become an opportunity for prayer. (continued on page 27)

(continued from page 23) 7) Create and use a Blessing Cup. After reflecting on a passage of scripture and praying, young and old alike drink from the blessing cup. This expresses praise, celebration, and unity on special occasions. 8) Honor the life of a family member by reminding them that they are special, especially on birthdays. In our family, the celebrated family member eats from a “You Are Special” plate, and we remind the child that he/she is valuable to God and our family. 9) Sponsor a child via World Vision or some other agency. We allow our kids to sponsor a child with the same birthday as their own. This is a great way to develop compassion in your children and allow them to pray for others.

Courageous Fathering by Alex Kendrick
After completing the film, Fireproof, in 2008, we heard from thousands of couples who were inspired to rededicate their marriage to the Lord and to put a focus back on the spiritual health of their relationship. It was what we had prayed for throughout the previous year, and to watch God ignite a fresh passion in so many marriages was extremely encouraging. Once we had taken a breather for a few months to focus on our own families and church ministries, we entered into another season of prayer. We began asking God what direction He wanted us to go for the next movie, and it wasn’t long before He showed us. He began unmistakably pointing us to the area of fatherhood. The more we researched the health of fathers in our culture, the more we became alarmed at the direction we are heading. We then explored everything scripture says for fathers to do in their crucial role, and the result became the theme and plot for our next movie, Courageous. Research shows that when a father is not at home, or is not engaged with his children in their formative years, they are more than 70 percent likely to commit crime, drop out of school, use drugs, or end up in prison. And the patterns set for them by their absent fathers are almost certain to be repeated for their children. 28
The spiritual aspects were just as alarming. By default, we tend to develop a picture of what God is like based on our view of our earthly father. When a young boy or girl has no father to shepherd and teach them during their early years, they struggle with their own identity and purpose in life. They struggle to understand that God loves them, and that they can trust Him to guide and mold their lives. The bottom line is this: the role of father is absolutely crucial in the life of every child, and when it is abandoned, the damage can last for generations. As filmmakers in ministry, we asked God for a story that would illustrate the need for men to step up and reclaim this crucial role, and to do so with passion and purpose. It is not enough to just be present in the life of your kids, but to strategically pour into their lives by teaching, training, and modeling the role of a man who seeks the Lord and walks according to His truths. Anything less is an invitation for half-hearted commitment and shallow faith to be the norm in your home. In other words, there is no place for casual fathering! God answered our prayers, and a script for the film was completed in
February of 2010. We cast the roles and planned the shoot for the spring. As of this writing, the movie is entering the production stages, and we have full trust and faith that God will begin stirring up the hearts of men to step up and take the reigns again. We believe this because we’ve been convicted and stirred up ourselves, and the need for personal evaluation and accountability has gone up in our own lives. God has proven time and time again that He can do the impossible. When we focus on His principles and His truth, lives change. Today, we need fathers to understand the importance of their position, and to grab the wheel and steer their family with conviction and purpose. We need them to be in the Word of God more than in their favorite magazines. We need them to pray for and with their wives and children more than they spend surfing the web. We need them to hunt down opportunities to train their children more than hunting for big game in the woods. We need men that will truly say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” We need men to step up and be strong and courageous in their fathering. The next generation depends on it!
Alex Kendrick is an associate pastor at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. He has producing, directing, and writing credits in the first three films from Sherwood: Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof. Look for Sherwood’s next movie, Courageous, and accompanying LifeWay resources in 2011.
