If Extreme was a challenge to be overcome for you, what would it be? Well, thinking that Extreme is something that you can touch it’s not correct! When I think about extreme, I mean looking more into myself, to improve every year. I have to find my limits, my “inside extremes”! And you know, it is much harder than going for big jumps, steep climbs or “extreme” downhills”. What are the characteristics of Extreme you love the most? I love the Extreme shoes because they’re a mix of all the things that a rider needs: light, stiff sole, simple but functional cover, good grip and simple closing systems. And of course a touch of Italian style with colors! How do you see the world Northwave? It’s a fresh world, made of dynamic people that capture their passions for cycling and put them in cycling products! And the best is that you can see that LOVE in each product from a shoe to a pair of sunglasses going through socks, clothing, all for cycling users. What is your dream for this 2013? Jajajj dream! Well, many dreams are in my mind but the majority of dreams makes it better in dreams than in reality! (this so poetic ahahah!). For this season I’m going to focus in the World cup and European champs. In any case the 3 main goals for me will be the World cups stages in Germany, Italy and Andorra and the World Championships in South Africa, a race that I love!

José, how long have you been wearing Northwave? How was your choice? Woowww! Let me think... 1995-1996-1997 then I had a break and came back to Northwave in 2004 until now! So this means 13 years Why did I chose Northwave? Well, as a junior I saw NW as the best company with the best image: a new, fresh, and pure MTB brand. This is why I signed with NW early in my career. They supported me from the beginning. After that I had always some kind of debt because NW was among the first to support me as a young rider. A very important sponsorship for the company, that stands out once again by selecting one of the most important world teams: for the third year in a row confirming its World Pro Tour license after meeting the results, ethics, administrative and financial requirements necessary to obtain the important license. Il progetto pluriennale del Team Colombia mira a ristabilire il ciclismo colombiano come presenza costante ai vertici di questo sport. Dal punto di vista biomeccanico, la funzione del piede è essenziale in quanto immagazzina la forza generata dai muscoli che viene poi trasmessa al pedale nella fase di spinta. Si tratta di forze molto elevate: si pensi alle improvvise accelerazioni o agli scatti in salita, che si ripetono in un numero elevatissimo di volte nel tempo. Un atleta che percorre 30.000 chilometri l’anno esegue circa cinque milioni, di cicli di pedalata. Ciascun elemento delle scarpe Biomap by Northwave é stato studiato per mantenere il piede nella corretta posizione durante la pedalata, trasmettendo la forza direttamente sui pedali senza dispersione di energie. Non solo è importante la postura in sella, ma anche il materiale tecnico indossato dall’atleta. Un capo che si adatta ergonomicamente a tutte le pieghe del corpo, vestendolo come una seconda pelle ma senza costrizioni, offre una minore resistenza aerodinamica e quindi una migliore performance. Per comprendere il ruolo che questa variabile gioca sulla prestazione finale e la sua influenza sulla capacità di produrre potenza dell’atleta, basti pensare che, pedalando a 50 Km/h, il 95% circa dell’energia viene spesa per vincere la resistenza dell’aria. From the biomechanical point of view, the function of the foot is essential as it stores the force generated by muscles that is then transmitted to the pedal in the boost phase. We’re talking about very high forces: think of the sudden acceleration or uphill bursts that repeat a large number of times: an athlete who travels 30,000 km per year performs approximately five million cycles pedaling. Each element of the BioMap shoes by Northwave has been designed to keep the foot in the correct position while pedaling, transmitting the force directly on the pedals without loss of energy. The soles have reduced thickness and calibrated stiffness increases because, as shown by several scientific findings, the mechanical energy transfer action from the shoe to the pedal is concentrated in a small area. We worked together with our champions by studying their behavior when racing, and shared their experiences listening to them we focused on finding effective solutions to prevent friction, dampen shock and vibrations while eliminating or at least keeping stitching to a minimum. The result: better ventilation, obtained using specific constructions that have enabled to increase the number and the effectiveness of breathable inserts without adding stitching or overlapping materials. Additionally, Ergonomic cuts and special constructions which ensure a greater level of comfort without pressure or friction points, protective inserts in GEL only in the solicited areas, so as to not remove sensitivity to the extremities. Inexperience, the weather conditions on the roads, and distracted or speeding drivers represent an ever-present risk to the safety of cyclists, and cause a large number of accidents every year (10% of fatal accidents occur on urban roads). Most accidents (27%) occur between 4 pm and 8 pm when the effects of increased traffic due to commuters traveling home are combined with other factors, such as accumulated stress and poor visibility caused by fading natural light. Another factor to consider is the lack of cycle lanes and the necessary safety equipment. However none of this should dampen your passion for a healthy bike ride. This is what Northwave had in mind when it developed the “Be Visible! Be Safe!” project.

Cyclist’s safety is a top priority for Northwave. This is why we added several reflex points in most of our shoes collection, in order to increase the visibility under low light conditions. Innovative solutions, incorporated in the upper, like the reflective logo on the heel of Sonic and Scorpius, nearly invisible in sunlight, are extremely bright when subjected to artificial light sources.

Northwave Bike Performance Custom Footbeds have been developed on the basis of biomechanical analyses performed on professional athletes, so as to provide an insole customizable with specific solutions to fit all different feet.

Performance Custom è anche legata all’utilizzo di una speciale schiuma certificata a celle aperte che rispetto ai tradizionali sottopiedi garantisce massima traspirabilità ed un eccellente assorbimento del sudore. SHOCK ABSORBING PAD Uno specifico pad shock absorbing

nella zona del tallone offre un’ulteriore protezione dagli urti a tutto vantaggio del comfort, non solo in sella. A special shock absorbing pad placed in the heel area provides additional impact protection to the benefit of comfort, not only in the saddle.

The perforations of the insole are strategically positioned to coincide with the vents of most Northwave soles, in order to provide a better aeration of the entire foot during pedaling.

The effectiveness of the Performance Custom Bike insole is also related to a special certified open cells foam which unlike traditional insoles ensures maximum breathability and excellent moisture absorption. Extremely comfortable and highly effective in dampening the vibrations, this foam is added with active carbons which confers anti-odor and anti-bacterial properties.

Each sole of the foot has its own conformation (regular, hollow or flat) to which the shoe is often unable to provide a perfect fit at the expense of the performance.
