SLICKLINE? ‘...used to lower and raise downhole tools to an appropriate depth in oil and gas wells.’ Slickline is a long, smooth wire, often shiny, silver/chrome in appearance. It is used to lower and raise downhole tools to an appropriate depth in oil and gas wells. The different tools are used to carry out a wide range of well maintenance operations. The wire is connected by the drum and is spooled off a slickline unit through the wireline sheave (a round wheel grooved and sized to accept a specified line); this sheave wheel will measure the wire as its ‘spooled’ off. Slickline comes in different sizes and grades. The larger the size, and higher the grade, generally means the higher line tension can be pulled before the line snaps. The wireline operator monitors at surface the slickline tension via a weight indicator gauge and the depth via a depth counter ‘zeroed’ from surface. He lowers the downhole tool to the proper depth, completes the job by manipulating the downhole tool mechanically, checks to make sure it worked if possible, and pulls the tool back out by winding the slickline back onto the drum it was spooled from.

Blair McCombie

Blair McCombie is an International Wireline Supervisor with Aker Solutions. He’s been working offshore for more than seven years and enjoys the challenges and lifestyle provided by the industry. He started his offshore career in the North Sea and is now in West Africa, working off Equatorial Guinea. “In the North Sea we generally work two weeks on and two weeks off, but in Africa it’s usually four and four. The day offshore is split into two twelve hour shifts, day shift and night shift. Day shifts generally start at approximately 6.30 a.m. “The work on the shifts is the same, but in Africa it’s better working nights because of the heat during the day, which can be very draining.” The working day starts around 6.00 am with a Toolbox Talk, a standard safety tool used throughout the industry. “The Toolbox Talk is at the start of the shift. Everybody comes together to learn about the tasks ahead, and highlight the risks. The Supervisor in charge runs this. Work needs to be continuous but where possible the offgoing shift supervisor will be involved in the Toolbox Talk. We then make our way to the worksite and handover with the opposite shift.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SLICKLINE SUPERVISOR Safety takes precedence

Safety is always the priority. Even in the heat and humidity of Africa, rig workers wear the same PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as in the North Sea: safety boots, coveralls, safety specs and hard hats. Wireline operations run from a busy deck within the rig, which may be the work station for up to 20 people (possibly from different companies) and houses lots of equipment. “The deck is usually busy with people getting on with their own work. It is usually a noisy environment as cranes and machines are working. Sometimes you have to shout to make yourself heard.”

“A shift is not routine: you don’t know what might happen.” The scheduled work for the shift depends on the stage of the operation. For the wireline crew this may involve rigging up, rigging down or carrying out wireline operations. Blair explains, “Rigging up means preparing all the equipment to do the task the client has specified. Rigging down means removing the equipment from the well, and getting it ready to send onshore. One day we might rig up, do wireline runs, then rig down in the same day. Or we could be on one well for days or weeks carrying out various operations.” Wireline tools are used to carry out various functions in the well bore. A client database is built up, well files are created and reported back onshore to aid future work plans. The work specification can change during the shift, depending on well conditions,

so it is important to be adaptable. If the programme changes, a ‘time out’ is called and the change and associated risks would be discussed between the crew. Blair stresses the importance of following procedures and working safely. “A shift is not routine: you don’t know what might happen. We get briefed for the job before we go out but experience and

practical problem solving are very important. I’m busy all the time, working and planning for the next operation.”

Every rig now has a communications system with the internet and telephone connections. It’s not just talking to your family, it’s being able to use the internet to do everyday things people take for granted.” Working offshore is a hazardous environment requiring total commitment. “You have to keep your mind on the job and have it in your head that you are away from

Oil & Gas UK Announces New Expanded Board Oil & Gas UK, the representative organisation for the UK offshore oil and gas industry has announced a number of new appointments within its expanded Board. Effective from 1 April 2012: •

James Edens, vice president and managing director at CNR International (UK) Ltd, and Gordon Ballard, chairman and country manager of Schlumberger UK Limited, have been appointed the co-chairmen of the organisation, representing, respectively, the operator and contractor communities.

Robin Davies, vice president – HSEQ & business improvement at Subsea 7, has been appointed honorary treasurer.

ITF boosts membership with leading service companies ITF, the oil and gas industry technology facilitator have announced new membership agreements with two major global service companies. Through their membership, Petrofac and Siemens will join other high profile energy players in supporting new technologies through the ITF model to tackle global industry challenges. Petrofac employs more than 15,000 people and is an international oil & gas service provider to the oil & gas production and processing industry. Dr Geoff Nesbitt, head of technology strategy at Petrofac, said: “ITF works on a vast scope of projects and challenges and it is an excellent platform for accessing many of the top minds in the oil and gas industry. The current membership list certainly highlights the pedigree of the organisation. Through ITF we have the opportunity to invest in technologies which are essential to the future of the sector.”

New Downhole Isolation Company Opens in Aberdeen A new well services company has officially opened its headquarters in Aberdeen. Meta, a provider of downhole isolation solutions, has invested around £500,000 in new premises to provide state of the art R&D, testing and office facilities at the Aberdeen Energy Park in Bridge of Don. Formally known as READ Well Services Ltd (READ), the launch of Meta follows a strategic change in the direction of the company following the appointment of Kevin Stewart as CEO in June 2011. The decision was made to divide the company’s operations into two sister companies; READ Cased Hole, which provides downhole well assurance, and Meta, a leader in downhole isolation. Commenting on the launch, Stewart said: “The new strategy will allow both Aberdeen companies to focus on distinctive growth strategies better suited to each product line and technology, which can be tailored to their respective clients in different locations.

Intertek expands Manchester Industry Services laboratories Expanded corrosion testing capabilities will support energy market demand – Intertek, the global quality services provider, has invested £1.5 million extending its laboratories in Manchester as part of an expansion of its energy services capability in the UK. In the past four months, the company’s specialist corrosion team Intertek CAPCIS has secured new contracts worth over £2 million. The Trafford Park laboratory has been expanded by 50% in order to accommodate growth in its testing business, particularly in relation to corrosion fatigue studies.

EXPLORING NEW MARKETS FOR OPTICAL

PARTICLE MEASUREMENT PAMAS celebrates 20th anniversary

utesheim. On 1st June, 2012, the German company PAMAS GmbH, focused on particle measuring and analysing

systems, celebrates its 20th anniversary. PAMAS develops, manufactures and distributes liquid particle counters and currently has employees stationed at nine company locations worldwide. Owner, Gerhard Schreck, believes two key factors are the reason behind the success of his company: the ongoing development and upgrades to existing systems and software and the continuous exploration into new markets and trading areas. Managing Director Gerhard Schreck had recognised early that only through extension of the corporate know-how, would the company be able to reach and maintain a market leading position in the sector of analysing technology. “For this reason, soon after establishment, we started to focus on development”, Gerhard Schreck explains. “Having our own department for Research and Development, which is situated at the PAMAS head office in Germany, we are able to take a bearing on market demands and to develop new products for new fields and applications. Over the course of the past two decades, we have evolved and modified new developments to meet customer demands rather than limit ourselves to technical capability. So we succeeded in exploring new markets where particle measuring technology had not been applied before.”

Various application fields of particle measurement One example is hydraulic systems within the offshore industry. In this sector, until the end of the 1990s, the cleanliness of hydraulic fluids was usually tested through microscopic membrane analysis.

This analysing procedure requires a lot of time and work: at first, a defined liquid amount is filtered through a membrane and afterwards analysed manually or automatically under the microscope. Apart from the extended time and labour factors, membrane analysis also has another key disadvantage compared to optical particle measurement: the counting procedure is very subjective, this is because it is solely based on the operator’s evaluation. For this reason, customers running offshore oil rigs were interested in alternative measuring techniques compensating the numerous uncertainties of microscopic membrane analysis. A customer acted as an opener and began to use the PAMAS S4031 WG particle counter alongside routine membrane analysis in order to test the suitability of the particle counter in the field. The test stage was very positive. It was shown that optical particle measurement is able to fully replace the membrane analysis. The size and the quantity of the particles are reported in a trice. The measuring results fully comply with common standards including NAS 1638, SAE AS 4059 and ISO 4406. As with many other users in the offshore industry, the customer meanwhile has taken proactive measures towards the cleanliness and contamination control of fluid sampling with the aid of an optical particle counter as standard procedure.

Success factors for business development PAMAS employees have been crucial in the success of the company. Many of the employees have been loyally working for the company since the initial years and are part of the corporate image. When founding the company in June 1992, Managing Director Gerhard Schreck started with three employees. Today, he employs 51 people at nine company locations worldwide. At the head office in Rutesheim, 30 employees are working in the departments of R&D, production, application, service, administration, sales and marketing. 21 further people work in eight additional divisions in Belgium, France, Finland, UK, Spain, Brazil, USA and India. In years to come, MD Gerhard Schreck intends to maintain this course and continue with expansion. Relocation to a new company building is in the planning stage.

CONCRETE LEG STRUCTURES A ROPEY PLACE TO ENTER I

ndustrial Rope Access is a common method of working safely in areas deemed at-height, confined, difficult to

reach or hazardous. Oil&GasCONNECT speaks to AquaTerra, a company specialising in this field as a leading global provider of rope access services that has worked across an array of projects that require skilled technicians to confidently undertake works in areas where other workers are not capable or competent to go. The majority of the jobs AquaTerra undertakes are on offshore assets for the oil and gas industry and some of their more specialist projects have been within the concrete leg columns of platforms within the North Sea. Many concrete platforms were constructed and installed some 30 years ago and are now several years past their economic production life. Their initial design was without the provision to access the cells inside the base or the working environment of the leg structures leading to them.

With some assets now in decommissioning phase it’s becoming increasingly relevant to consider successful implementation of integrity management. Operators are also presented with the growing challenge of exploring means of accessing and carrying out work within highly restricted spaces such as concrete legs. AquaTerra’s experience and proven track record on these projects has allowed them to offer the industry a solution to, what will soon be, an increasing work scope across a variety of other ageing offshore infrastructures. At the beginning, when various operators of these assets were considering how to access the concrete legs, divers were thought to be a possible means of entering the sea water filled structures. Given the associated risks of entrapment, it was later deemed to be of greater benefit to drain the Leg and enter via Rope Access personnel wearing breathing apparatus.

And danger or the sense of it isn’t something that should ever feel present.’ For AquaTerra’s management, it is essential that the rope access teams are assembled to provide the company with the confidence and competence that is continuously sought after within the oil and gas industry. Whilst Rope Access is the means of accessing the place of work, it’s the combining of skills and trades of the

Along with the air quality, these legs contain process and utilities pipework and are normally filled with seawater, so the working environment for personnel and permits to work are subject to increasing stringent health and safety controls.

Whilst Rope Access is an extremely safe method of work, the potential hostile environment of concrete Legs poses significant challenges. As a consequence, all aspects of each project are subject to

personnel that are the essential background of each rope access technician. Some are trained welders, pipefitters, electricians, riggers or inspection specialists. During the project, teams may be changed around according to the needs of the work scope as it develops. Having this element of flexibility to the makeup of a team is an essential attribute to many offshore projects where time is critical. As Kevin explains, it takes a certain type of person to be a part of this kind of team, ‘Patience I think is the primary quality needed to work offshore. You also need the skills to manage your day and organise, but your working day can change

Adjusting to each temperament and attitude of your team or the personnel around you can present personality clashes - but what work place doesn’t have these same issues?’ As part of an overall strategy to improve safety, minimise team size, and control

risk associated with the activity, taking into account client and stakeholder expectations, the capability and limitations of the team and statutory responsibility.

So you just have to take the good with the bad.” Extensive risk assessments, health and safety planning and management as well as comprehensive training are all part of the effort to improve safety and minimise potential problems. As Morris describes, ‘It doesn’t matter where you are, even walking down the street is dangerous, working offshore is hazardous and the hazards are all around you, so you identify the hazards and put in the methods to control them.’ Along with this, AquaTerra has over 30,000 sq feet of onshore training facilities to recreate job-specific trials using specialist

equipment, tools and techniques to ensure that, when projects are finally carried out at the offshore environment, they are right first time. Among other things, the pre-trial mock-ups allow AquaTerra to identify the hazards to health and safety, and to determine the actions necessary to avoid or control risk. Behind all the safety regulations and rigorous training, are hard working people that dedicate themselves to a life offshore, so what motivates them? When asked what he enjoys most and least about his job, Kevin MacDonald gave a frank and honest response, ‘Well, I know what the correct all round offshore hero answer here would be: I enjoy the challenge. But the honest answer is I enjoy the money. That’s the real reason why any of us choose to work offshore which goes hand in hand with the question; is there anything I don’t enjoy? Working away from my family is difficult. And I’ve always felt it to be the hardest part about working offshore, but working away allows me to afford my family a standard of living that I couldn’t get any other way. So you just have to take the good with the bad.’ The overall perception from these teams is that, although they work hard and are constantly working in environments that no one else can, they wouldn’t have it any other way. As Morris Grant proudly admits, ‘I’ve been working in roped access for half of my working life and have never enjoyed any job as much, especially with a good team of lads beside you. What kind of training did you have to attain in order to do your job safely? Training-wise there are quite a few courses that have to be done before you can work offshore. Chief among these are your offshore survival and MIST training. You also have to be medically fit so we’re required to pass an offshore medical. Job-specific training is also required, particularly when doing rope access, all rope techs are trained to a minimum standard IRATA level 1. This is the basic starting level for ropes access, which is, in itself, only a secondary skill supplementary to a trade; welding plating rigging etc... Additionally for our current work on the Dunlin Alpha Intervention project, which involves assessing the platform legs, our whole team has had to refresh our Drager and confined space entry training and training on BA equipment as well as occasionally attend any further training should the work phase require it. In a nut shell the training in this line of work is ongoing and invaluable.

What has been the most dangerous/ complex environment you have worked in? I’ve been quite fortunate to have found myself working on the ropes in some challenging environments over the years. I’ve worked in extreme heat - on an FPSO in the South China Sea off Malaysia and working top side in a mine in the Northern Territories of Australia.

What would a normal day in your job involve? A normal day for me offshore would mean getting up at 06.00am, dressed, breakfast and in my coveralls for 06.30am. (One of the plus sides of working offshore is you can just roll out of bed and be at your work.) I’d then go and see the permit controller and get the

Years ago when I was working a ‘normal job’, i.e. on the deck as an Instrument Pipefitter, I liked the idea of accessing pipework using these techniques. The more I got into this line of work I realised how safe it really is, definitely safer than most industries because of the depth and intensity of training that we have to go through.

What is your job title? I am currently Field Engineer/Rope Access co-ordinator on a North Sea Offshore Platform - Dunlin Alpha. The Platform is a concrete gravity structure built on four legs with a storage capacity for 838,200 barrels of oil and designed to carry a topside weight of 15,886 tonnes. On Dunlin our work-scope is within one of these concrete column leg structures and known as the A-Leg

The training never really stops though; you learn something new every day. Like I’ve said to quite a few people in this game, ‘every day’s a school day no matter how smart you think you are’.

What has been the most dangerous/complex environment you have worked in? Inside any of the concrete platform legs of an offshore platform. As I said before, they are not dangerous they are hazardous. The difference between working in the legs and, say for instance, working on a derrick it is wide open and your routes of escape are many, but working in the legs you have one way in and one way out.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMS OFFSHORE COMMUNICATIONS Twenty-first century advances in telecommunications mean that offshore communications - telephone, internet and data transfer - can be almost as good as they are onshore. Nowadays, oil and gas companies rely on real-time data transfer from offshore to onshore, enabling onshore management to be involved in all aspects of operations. As the technology has become more sophisticated, bandwidth requirements have soared in order to provide facilities such as video-conferencing between onshore and offshore offices. The existence of sophisticated real-time data transfer facilities is also key to remote operation of unmanned platforms and facilities.

Ensuring reliability The communications network is a key part of the offshore infrastructure and it is vital that it operates around the clock, day in day out. If there is no connectivity, operations grind to a halt. Alastair explains Nessco’s approach: “The challenge is ensuring that the service we offer is reliable and robust. We have to make sure that the service operates in harsh conditions, meets the customers’ expectations and can be managed from our onshore support centre.” Services are monitored and supported 24:7 from the onshore support centre. An outof-band management service is installed on board the location. This means that if there is a problem with primary communications, the onshore network engineers have a way of accessing the system remotely so that they can take control of the offshore equipment and rectify any faults as quickly as possible.

In the early years of the North Sea offshore industry, workers heading offshore would be out of touch with their families for the duration. Now they have regular access to telephone and internet and can stay connected in a way that used to be impossible. This has transformed working conditions as crew members offshore are no longer totally isolated from their lives ashore.

How will telecommunications develop in the future? Telecommunications technology is moving fast. Twenty years ago broadband access did not exist. Ten years ago the ready and cheap availability of services such as Skype (which enables computer to computer video calls) would have seemed like science fiction. Demand for satellite communications is an ever-expanding market, with traditional C and KU band resources becoming more constrained due to increased demand. The need to utilise existing satellite capacity means more efficiency is a key factor. Innovative bandwidth compression products such as Carrier-in-Carrier which can, in specific scenarios, reduce space segment requirements and provide significant cost savings to clients will rapidly become a de facto standard for the industry. The offshore oil and gas sector relies heavily on communications in various forms and the telecoms specialist companies will be in the vanguard for new applications. Oil and gas is a dynamic and practical hands-on industry which demands high levels of skill and expertise. Oil majors and service companies particularly value academic qualifications when they are combined with practical experience.

Heriot-Watt’s IPE: specialising in postgraduate training for oil and gas The Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE) is part of Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University. It was established 35 years ago by the Chemical Engineering department to help meet the need for a skilled workforce to staff the new and fast-developing North Sea offshore fields. Since its inception IPE has focused on research and on teaching at Masters and PhD level in petroleum engineering and petroleum geosciences. It is a very successful establishment attracting applicants from all over the world. Its three MSc courses (petroleum engineering; petroleum geo-science and reservoir evaluation and management), are ten times oversubscribed and IPE alumni can be found in nearly all oil companies around the globe – many at senior levels. In 2010 IPE awarded its 2,500th MSc.

There is a huge push to find better and more costeffective ways of doing things, but in the field this cannot be at the expense of safety or output. Simon Stewart is keen to encourage people with industry experience “to jump across the low fence existing between industry and IPE”. He himself spent nearly 20 years in the industry as a geophysicist in North Sea exploration before moving into well planning and operations working in Aberdeen, London, Baku, before joining the academic staff at IPE. “Industry exposure teaches you to focus on getting answers, getting to the point. We want people who know how to deal with real problems and can tackle appropriate academic research to address it. If you can get someone with 10 year’s experience they know the problems operations face and how project management works in an industry environment.” Academic pay is never going to match the industry, but he made a lifestyle choice to settle in Edinburgh with his young family rather than continuing the globe-trotting that characterises the oil and gas industry.

One strategy that IPE is using to bring industry and academia closer together is short-term secondments where people come in for days or weeks and deliver teaching or help with some research. Simon is interested in finding a way of having people who have taken early retirement to have part-time roles or visiting academic roles so that they could get involved in the bit of research that they’ve always wanted to do. He says, “We really need to get seasoned veterans of the industry into the academic setting and sustain them. This is a challenge and an opportunity. The right people are out there.” All Petroleum Engineering teaching and research institutions have the same issues, but for industry and academia alike, developing closer links and collaboration between universities and the industry will be a win win situation. The ancient Greeks believed that a subterranean underworld – containing both Hades’ land of the dead and the Elysian Fields – lay deep beneath the sea. Jules Verne’s 19th century ‘Journey to The Centre of the Earth’ describes a descent through a volcano crater to reach a deep underground ocean lit by electrically charged gas. It was not until the 20th century that scientists started developing tools which enable precise and remote mapping of what actually lies deep underground.

EXPLORATION Understanding what lies deep below the surface of the earth is an ongoing challenge. For the oil and gas industry characterising the structure and composition of the subsurface of the earth is key to being able to extract vital resources. In the early days of the industry the technique for finding underground hydrocarbons was to search for surface evidence, notably seepages of oil or gas, to provide clues that there were deposits underneath, and then drill down to check if they existed. This was a very hit and miss process!

Further tests are used to gain more detailed information which can be used to compile virtual three-dimensional models of the potential underground formations.

Wells would then be sunk based on oilmen’s instinct, intuition and hunches. That has now changed and decisions are based on virtual models of the rock formations.

Computer processing power aids understanding Simon Stromberg, the UK Subsurface Manager for energy consultants Senergy explains the importance of computer modelling to the industry. “There is a huge amount of uncertainty associated with hydrocarbons in the ground. The most important thing in the oil and gas industry is to understand the risk to any financial investment in extracting oil and gas. We do this by constructing multiple models to represent the way the subsurface could be. Given that we don’t have all the information, a wide range of models enables better estimates of risk and tell us the best place to drill for oil.” The three-dimensional graphical simulations also enable the company investors to visualise what a project is likely to involve, and give a better idea of risk.

Animation industry contributes to the oil and gas industry Parallel computer processing using specialised software provides the best way to represent the reality and the physics of underground rock formations. The development of the technique lies in film animation. “If you look at the development of geological modelling, most of the graphics power has come out of the film industry. Companies like Silicon Graphics built high-end graphical modelling machines for film industry animations like Toy Story,” Simon says. Technological development has seen computer power increase while costs have decreased. It is now possible to run geological simulations on a standard laptop. “The idea is to run a simulation and find out if it matches the data you have. If not, you adjust parameters and run it again,” Simon says. “Simulations for a big field can still take a day to run, whereas it used to be a week. We want to get this down to minutes.”

He notes, “In the modern environment we cannot do the job without computing power and software.”

Two elements go into the computer models: physical and conceptual. Physical information can be obtained from seismic data collected by directing sound waves into the earth. Air guns (towed on long-lines behind a boat) are used to create artificial explosions, sending sound wave energy down into the ground, which may pass through or be reflected back depending on the structure and composition of the layers beneath the earth’s surface. Seismic surveys enable geologists to see broad structures. Skilled interpretation and a lot of computer processing power are required to make sense of this data. Based on this, physical information can be collected from boreholes drilled into the earth. These can be used to provide either cores of extracted rock, or by logging – running sensors into boreholes. The information from the physical tests is then used to generate a series of conceptual

Specialised software and powerful computers allow experts to build models of subsurface structures and represent the subsurface in a consistent way. “This allows us to fairly quickly generate numbers around the hydrocarbons in place and the recovery factor.” The software packages encapsulate physical, geological and geophysical data as well as the experience of the experts. These are combined into a model that can be conceptualised and used to explore the range of structures that might exist. Simon says, “The models are a repository for information and a toolbox for experimentation. They contain lots of different types of information that help us understand more about the subsurface.” Another key use for computer processing power in the industry is reservoir engineering field simulations. The programs can be used to simulate flow from wells, enabling reservoir engineers to forecast and predict production, key figures when forecasting potential production costs and revenues. The techniques have come a long way since the 1930’s when the first reservoir simulators were physical models using oil, sand and water. Today the sophisticated software handles fields of great complexity at great speed.

Discussion and adjustment are unavoidable but consensus must be reached before the survey takes place. Surveys may also require licences and consents and these can take several weeks to obtain, so it is important to allow time in your project plan for both the scoping consultation and the licence application.

Laboratory methodology A methodology for biological sample analysis has been outlined by the NMBAQC Scheme but it has allowance for variation, particularly with mesh sizes, which remain a source of inconsistency in benthic data. Some regulators may require use of, for example, NMBAQC and OSPAR methods, although they may

be incompatible. For example, some older guidelines retain recommendations to ignore certain organisms, or juveniles; these have since been updated to require records of all taxa by the NMBAQC. Trawl samples are even more variable in the approaches taken, with some organisations assuming that only fish need be recorded; many larger invertebrates will be found in trawls that had been missed by grab sampling. Once again, it is essential for all parties to agree the details before finalising the plans. It is also important to keep a reference collection of every species found so that any future discrepancies can be investigated. Similar discipline is required for sediment particle size analysis (PSA). Recommended methods change periodically but can be discussed and agreed with all parties. Chemical analysis requirements are not always clear.

The manner of collection and storage of samples before analysis and the suite of required analyses and detection limits must be agreed in detail before the survey. Misunderstandings can result in expensive repeat surveys if the data are not adequate.

Care of data On receipt of the data, the marine ecology consultant will prepare a report for the Environmental Statement or required assessment. Most major projects will have several consultancies and agencies involved and there may be multiple reports to be incorporated. It is best to encourage communication and sharing of data to make the best use of it for the final report. Important files may include data tables, GIS layers, as well as the design of your development.

Other reports from adjacent developments may also need to be considered. All documents should include a clear consistent statement outlining methodologies in detail. It may be tempting to see submission of your report as the end of the process and surveys are often considered one-off solutions to an immediate problem. In reality many projects continue for some years and also have multiple possible future uses not originally envisaged. The data that fed into a report and details of the original requirements may be required at a later date. This could be for later aspects of the consent, such as a requirement for long-term monitoring, comparison with later surveys or resolution of discrepancies and questions, or the desirability of sharing data for wider benefit. Raw environmental data are unlikely to be of value to competitors or used as a basis for unreasonable obstruction of development.

However, the data can be of great benefit to the understanding of the seabed and its species. Long-term storage of the data and material should be arranged at an early stage. Storage of files in PDF format only is not appropriate when the raw data are needed at later stages. Raw data should ideally be securely stored in a database format, such as Thomson Unicomarineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Unicorn with data easily exported to Excel files. By following these simple guidelines and using a reputable marine ecology consultancy, marine ecology data can be reliably collected, processed, stored and used to help oil and gas developers obtain their project consents.

he unit provided commercial fishermen with an audible and visual warning of oil and gas related surface and subsea structures in UK waters and was an important step in securing the safety of fishermen by reducing the risk of a vessel or equipment coming into contact with oil and gas infrastructure. The unit also helped to protect oil and gas infrastructure and reduced the risk of environmental damage caused by such contact. In 2007 the industries took a further step together and formed U.K.Fisheries Offshore Oil and Gas Legacy Trust Fund Limited (“FLTC”) a company with charitable status. This was a world first – the first time that the two industries had joined together to set up a company in which representatives from both industries would work together to provide fishermen with critical information about oil and gas infrastructure. The principal sources of funding are operators who are given permission by the regulator to leave in place parts of an offshore facility after decommissioning. These operators make a payment towards an Endowment Fund established by FLTC which is intended to provide in perpetuity funding for provision to fishermen of detailed data about oil and gas related structures and infrastructure in UK waters. By 2009 the FishSAFE brand was well known to fishermen and FLTC Services Limited (“FLTCS”) a wholly owned subsidiary of FLTC decided to use the brand in connection with two new projects. The first project was a much enhanced version of the FishSAFE unit.

The central purpose of the new unit retained its use as a warning device to enhance the safety of fishermen and to help protect the environment but the new unit had significantly improved functionality. The costs of developing and producing the new unit were reduced significantly by grants received from the Scottish Ministers and the European Fisheries Fund. By now almost 300 units have been supplied to the UK fishing industry where the product has been very well received.

MANAGING WASTE FROM OFFSHORE DECOMMISSIONING The legacy of any production industry which is reliant on large installations with a life-span and/or thresholds of economic viability, is the eventual requirement for decommissioning. Oil and gas operations in the North Sea started in the 1960s and took off in earnest in the 1970s resulting, currently, with over 600 offshore oil and gas installations in the North Sea, approximately 470 of which are in UK waters.

Public policies, and the legislation underpinning them, have usually been quick to respond to such incidents. Heightened corporate social responsibility and boycott fears are also factors which have shaped the industry’s current attitude towards decommissioning activities. As a logistical exercise, devising a plan to remove thousands of tonnes of material from a harsh environment in the North

Sea and transport it safely onshore is a challenging exercise. However, this must also be completed in accordance with a myriad of environmental and waste legislation and in compliance with the installation’s Decommissioning Plan, which will set out stringent re-use and recycling targets. Ultimately, at the heart of each decommissioning project is a highly complex waste management exercise. It is therefore impossible to embark on such a project without a full appreciation of how the waste stream is regulated. This article outlines some of the key waste-related issues which will need to be considered by operators and contractors undertaking decommissioning activities.

Decommissioning programmes The Petroleum Act 1998 sets out requirements for decommissioning offshore installations and pipelines, including the requirement to prepare and submit a Decommissioning Programme. The Decommissioning Programme will include a section covering ‘Removal and Disposal Options,’ which will require a detailed assessment, evaluation, identification, quantification and strategy for the recovery/ disposal of waste. The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) requires that each Decommissioning Programme takes into consideration the precautionary principle, best available techniques and best environmental practice, the waste

CASE STUDY – NORTH WEST HUTTON The scale of the waste management task on decommissioning is perhaps best illustrated by way of an example. The successful decommissioning by BP of the North West Hutton installation provides some eye-catching figures: The North West Hutton platform, located some 130km north east of the Shetland Islands, commenced production in 1983 and ceased production in January 2003. Following cessation of production, well abandonment and topsides clean up were carried out and over 50 studies were commissioned to consider the full range of safety, environmental, social, technical and economic issues relevant to the project and to assess the installation’s potential for alternative use, removal and recycling/disposal. Offshore deconstruction was considered the most feasible and

viable option, with topside removal being completed in 2008 and jacket removal in 2009. The recovered material was taken to the Able UK facility on Teesside. Of the estimated 38,000 tonne structure, 7,029 tonnes were re-used (accommodation, module support frame, helideck etc.); 20,925 tonnes were recycled and 473 tonnes disposed to landfill. The footings remained in situ, pursuant to an OSPAR Convention derogation. In total, 98.3% of the deconstructed installation was either reused or recycled. The North West Hutton example demonstrates the considerable waste management planning and supply chain engagement required before taking on a project of this scale. From a regulatory perspective there are many issues to consider, both onshore and offshore, as part of this planning process.

Identifying and quantifying all the materials present in the relevant installation to be decommissioned will be a complex and time-consuming exercise. With large quantities of material under water, and with little information sometimes available as to the weight of subsea infrastructure, operators will often have to rely on their best estimates based on existing records and sampling techniques. An assessment of the amount of metals, glass, plastic, hydrocarbon sludge, oils, production chemicals, drilling chemicals, asbestos, PCBs, radioactive materials and algae to be removed will help a comprehensive and effective waste strategy to be designed. This will ultimately determine where best to sort and separate the relevant parts of the installation to maximise recovery, and minimise health and safety and environmental risks and costs. Perhaps the most impressive statistic in respect of the North West Hutton Decommissioning Programme is that the difference between the estimated total weight of the waste and its actual weight, as measured onshore, was only 2.8%. The biggest variances between predicted and actual figures resulted from an overestimation of the quantity of algae growth, and an underestimation of the quantity of cement-filled pipework – both of which would have been extremely difficult to predict with the installation in situ.

Special attention will also be required to ensure that any onward transportation of waste or recycled material is carried out in compliance with applicable legislation, such as the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009, a highly prescriptive regulation governing the carriage of dangerous goods by road. For those about to embark on a decommissioning exercise, the message is clear: take time to quantify and understand your waste and the regulations which apply to it; have a clear strategy in place to manage that waste; and communicate that strategy through clear documentation so that the role and responsibility of each relevant party is clearly defined.

ASET’S NEW INTERNATIONAL OIL & GAS TRAINING ACADEMY Skills Gap and Training for the North Sea and International Oil and Gas Industry

arly last year OPITO, the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation, and the Engineering Construction Industry Board (ECITB) published the results of a survey carried out for them by the Robert Gordon University. The study was designed to discover the views of major oil and gas companies on the opportunities and challenges facing the industry in the North Sea and the UK Continental Shelf. One of the key findings of this oil and gas industry-wide research is that the demand for appropriately qualified and experienced staff continues to outstrip supply. Over 50% of the respondents (all representing oil majors and contractors) identified attracting appropriately skilled staff as their number one challenge.

The survey highlights the advantages to an organisation meeting the training needs of its own staff (from novice to highly experienced workers) but the trick is not only training, but also retaining this critical asset. Training and development not only benefits a company’s business objectives but also increases an employee’s self-esteem and can enhance company loyalty. The final conclusion in the OPITO survey results is that education and training providers need to maintain the relevance of their training programmes and design them to improve not only the technical skills but also the behavioral skills of potential and existing employees. Aberdeen College and ASET have demonstrated their commitment to education and training for the oil & gas Industry through the development of the new ASET International Oil & Gas Training Academy. The UK sector of the oil and gas industry faces greater competition as the UK based contractors become involved more and more in the worldwide industry as well as facing competition at home from the renewable energy industry both onshore and offshore. Much has often been made of the age profile of offshore workers in the UK sector with a fair proportion - some estimates are up to 30% - becoming eligible for retirement over the next decade. There are a fair number of new entrants from the industry’s Modern Apprenticeship scheme but the greatest shortage seems to be of those in the middle years where the essential energy, drive and experience would be expected to be found. 38

As well as the physical plant being controlled from the Delta V system, there is a full process simulation suite for LNG, FPSO and Oil & Gas (Compressions & Separation) primarily aimed at operator (process, plant and DCS) familiarisation and competency verification. The creation of the new ASET Oil and Gas

Production Training Platform, which will be arguably the most technically advanced and realistic production training facility in the world, would not have been possible without significant vision and support from donating companies. What brought you into the industry/your position? I came into the industry 22 years ago and before that I was in the merchant navy. Having an interest in engineering combined with industrial experience meant it was an attractive industry to join. I started my career in oil and gas with the Mobil Oil Company because they held an attractive set of career opportunities.

What is your greatest career achievement to date? Well I’m a father of three children so they are my greatest achievement. From a career perspective my team and I have had a fantastic couple of years because we have managed to simultaneously grow our UK business at the same time as merging Wood Group with PSN which, given the scale of these two businesses, it has been a major transition to go through. Taking the lead in our UK business has been hugely interesting and indeed challenging – we have brought together two quite different cultures, many diverse clients, alternative ways of working and two large teams in the last 18 months. We have a healthy market share in the UK and continue to achieve business success and create local job opportunities so this current period in my career is really enjoyable and significant to me personally. I am an optimist and enjoy all aspects of my career!

The biggest achievement and most enjoyable part of the job came for me last year when we created opportunities to recruit 100 graduates, trainees and apprentices into our business. To be able to attract new or young people into a really vibrant sector is hugely rewarding.

In terms of the trainees we have been able to plough a rich furrow where we have looked at people with HND’s and HNC’s and taken them into what we would call a white collar environment, so taken them out of a blue collar industrial workshop or offshore environment and taken them into doing technician related work, such as drafting and construction engineering among other things. That has been a really significant conversion programme and provided opportunities for people to break into different parts of our business.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be and why? The skills shortage is one of our biggest challenges at the moment. It’s good to see growth but with this comes the fact that we are all competing for the same resources – those of which are in relative short supply. That said it means we need to be as innovative as we can be to try and attract and retain people.

What is the best advice you have been given? The best advice I got was from my father, which was ‘When you do a job, do it right the first time.’

There is a perception that because we don’t manufacture as much as we used to, our industry is in decline and these subjects therefore don’t present the same prospects, so we should be better informing young people that there are a tremendous amount of opportunities in this industry. I see long and fruitful careers for my children if they went into the energy sector and probably for their children as well, in the UK.

What inspires you? My children certainly do, a good family life is a big part of success and inspiration. I’m fortunate to be in a senior position in a UK listed company that has an impressive global footprint. From a professional prospective, it’s a really great story. What’s not to like about nurturing talent, exporting UK skills, working with good quality clients and taking our business across the globe? I think that in itself is pretty inspirational.

What law/legislation would you like to see introduced? Streamlining the fiscal regime for the UK oil and gas industry would have its benefits. Decommissioning liabilities are a real barrier to new entrants trying to break into the industry so I think if government could do more to support decommissioning liabilities, perhaps by offsetting them against capital investment, it would really stimulate late-field-life investment. There are also some stranded reserves that are fiscally unattractive just now and I think if we could do something about the extending the field allowance from a taxation perspective, it would encourage investment, which would lead to more jobs and economic stability.

The quality of the graduates we have been fortunate enough to attract is really impressive and this is thanks to the standard of engineering students that come through from UK universities. In terms of apprenticeships, we are very proactive within the industry; we are actually accountable for providing the training for a high percentage of the oil and gas apprentices in the UK.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? I think if somebody wanted to study a science, technology, engineering or mathematics I would definitely encourage Oil&GasCONNECT

nmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are an emerging technology that has seen widespread use in theatres of war in recent years, particularly in Iraq and now in Afghanistan. Military success, deploying such technology for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) purposes, has sparked the imagination of the commercial business sector, creating much food for thought as to where and how UAS can be successfully deployed for dull, dirty and potentially dangerous tasks to reduce risk, cost and improve productivity. As with any emerging technology, the challenge is very much centred on successful implementation. Arguably the greatest stumbling block for commercial use of UAS today is in securing appropriate approvals for clearly defined operational tasks from national government organisations that control both airspace and airwaves, especially when the regulations are a moving target and often lag behind technological developments and advancements. Scientific instrumentation miniaturisation and lower power consumption, coupled with new high-performance airframes, has propelled low-altitude Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) UAS into the spotlight as highly effective tools to address many dataacquisition, monitoring and security tasks demanded of the oil and gas exploration and production industry. Offshore oil and gas installations are extremely valuable assets, often located in remote areas that are difficult to protect. Attacks or damage to these installations can lead to enormous ecological harm, revenue loss and chaos

on international oil markets. Improving oil and gas security has increasingly become a matter of global importance. Helicopters and light aircraft have high operational and maintenance costs, whereas VTOL UAS are typically much smaller, cheaper, less costly to mobilise, set up, relocate, refuel and maintain. The fuel costs for UAS easily being a fraction of the cost of fuel for manned aircraft. However, for UAS to be useful in the oil and gas exploration and production operations, UAS must be able to fly at low altitude over long distances, carrying an appropriate working payload with real-time data feedback capabilities. Manned flight-hours are not only extremely costly but also inherently dangerous due to the necessity of conducting such flights at low altitudes and low airspeeds over some of the world’s most hostile terrain. UAS can fly in hostile environments without such concerns, with UAS pilots stationed safely on the ground, tens if not hundreds of miles away from UAS flight operations. Pilot-less aircraft also offer another advantage since flights are not limited to the maximum time a pilot is allowed to fly (nor do they need to sleep) and missions can even be conducted at night, when instruments can be more accurate. The ability to ‘fly on instruments’ under precise computer control to perform operational tasks increases data acquisition accuracy. UAS also have a relatively low environmental footprint, which has become a high priority for the offshore industry, particularly in the light of recent disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon platform blow-out. This smaller environmental footprint being created as a result of fewer materials used in manufacture, lower fuel

These long-distance operations require Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) certification which requires not only far more stringent safety requirements than for systems deployed Within Visual Line Of Sight (WVLOS) but additional avionic systems. Regulations for flying BVLOS demand additional capabilities for collision avoidance which adds to the overall weight, reduces endurance and can also require a change in operational task management. Examples of typical oil and gas BVLOS tasks for which UAS require appropriate aviation authority approval(s) are described below. Oil tankers are left largely unprotected on the high seas whilst transporting thousands of tonnes of crude to refineries or to market. As piracy becomes more prevalent, oil tanker protection is of growing concern. Even a small vessel has the potential to cause some surprising problems; a rammed tanker can cause a substantial leakage (90,000 barrels have been known to have been spilt). Infrared (IR) cameras on VTOL UAS operating at a distance can identify the presence of even small vessels before they can get close enough to become a potential threat. This is not just true of oil tankers but equally applies to sabotage and piracy of both exploration and production oil rigs. A UAS armed with an IR camera will provide an early detection of oil leaks and slicks, saving oil companies millions of dollars in fines, which are automatically imposed when leaks occur.

Undetected leaks have frequently caused disastrous fires, explosions and loss of life, as well as heavy economic losses. Oil refineries release pollutants into the atmosphere even though pollutant concentrations are carefully measured inside of smoke stacks. Dispersal once the pollutants have left the stack is the key issue. A VTOL UAS set up with an appropriate payload can establish in real-time an accurate picture of pollution patterns around a refinery. When it comes to surveying, very stable slow-speed, long-duration VTOL UAS are ideal, either working alone or in swarms (several UAS working together). Their substantial reduction is size compared with manned aircraft can be a significant advantage since the airframe introduces less of a disturbance to the working payload measurements. Swarming of UAS can also deliver high-quality survey results. The precision flying abilities of UAS with their satellite navigation systems providing the basis for accurate computercontrolled flying enables several UAS to fly safely in close proximity. Furthermore,

several UAS can also cover the same area, enabling the identification and reduction of instrument errors, measurement noise and instrument drift. The use of multiple UAS, flying at slower speeds, but with increased measurement accuracy can still complete a survey faster and safer than a single manned aircraft. The most critical element in securing BVLOS certification is in fully defining the operational tasks from an end-user perspective. With the task clearly defined, alternative payloads can then be evaluated with respect to required task delivery. The UAS airframe can then be selected to match the required manoeuvrability, range and endurance specifications. The final step is achieving appropriate aviation authority operational task/flight approval(s). It may not be that well known, but the UK leads the world in UAS test facilities and has a comprehensive and fully operational UAS environment at Parc Aberporth in West Wales for proving the safety case and securing UK CAA approval(s), which are respected the world over. The future will see industry and even operation-specific specialist UAS platforms being developed. One exciting VTOL UAS platform currently under development is a VTOL Flying Wing that has the potential to significantly extend range, endurance and payload, when compared against other comparable UAS architectures in terms of size and weight.
