WIN FOR STURT STREET After receiving calls from concerned residents and businesses regarding the Copenhagen style bikeway on Sturt Street, I consulted widely with residents and businesses to gauge their opinions on how they were affected by the bikeway. Since installation, the bikeway road markings has caused danger and confusion for motor vehicles and cyclists. Congestion and reduced parking affected local businesses, residents and the Sturt Street Community School. On the opening day of Parliament, I presented a petition to the House of Assembly showing that the bikeway resulted in poor road layout, an increase in accidents, caused congestion, confusion, diminished parking and loss of revenue for local businesses. “The bikeway services very few cyclists, and apart from being very dangerous to
CYCLE SAFE COACHING
pedestrians and road users, it has disadvantaged business and residents…therefore, the Adelaide City Council trial should be discontinued as soon as possible.”
At a recent Adelaide City Council Meeting, the Council conceded with the position of the petition and agreed to commence works to remove the Copenhagen style bike lane. Unfortunately this has come at a total project cost of $500,000 to ratepayers. Whilst it is very important for city planners to look at the issue of cycling in the city, it is essential that consultation takes place prior to such an installation occurring. I am passionate about supporting an integrated transport plan for our city that incorporates a detailed bike plan for the city and major arterial networks. I am commencing consultation with a number of stakeholders on this issue and would appreciate your valuable feedback too.

ANZAC DAY SERVICES This year, I had the privilege of attending many Anzac Day Commemorative Services throughout the Adelaide Electorate. I attended the St Peters Cathedral evening prayer service held the week prior to Anzac Day. On Anzac Day I was proud to lay a wreath in memory of the fallen soldiers at the Walkerville RSL Service. I then visited the Prospect RSL and continued on to the SA Mounted Rifles Association Service where I laid a wreath in memory of our veterans. Perhaps one of the most memorable moments for me was to attend the Anzac Eve Youth Vigil and see the young faces who stood guard and paid their respects to the once young men and women who fought so bravely for our great nation. It is truly an honour to attend Anzac Day Commemorations and share the sense of pride and patriotism felt in the crowd.
