One of the hottest topics in business today is leveraging social media to reach out to potential customers. For businesses, social media is a fantastic resource for organizations of all shapes and sizes to promote their brands online and generate new business. The platforms themselves are free to use, and they also have paid advertising options specifically for brands that want to reach even more new audiences. But why doesn’t it seem to be working for my business? If this sounds like a question you keep asking yourself or your marketing team, here are some reasons why your social media strategy might not be working for your business.


Are you telling your brand story? Your brand has a story. Corporate brands are constructs built by people and as such they are living breathing entities created and driven by the energy of people. Just as with humans, brands are born, they develop; they make mistakes, grow, learn, rebuild, achieve success and drive through adversity. The most successful brands have a clear and compelling proposition and story. Communicating this effectively and clearly via social media platforms will help develop an online personality that connects peoples and creates emotional bonds.


Do you have something interesting to say? Everyday, your consumers are being bombarded with content and their attention is very limited. By producing quality social media content it becomes easier to find fans that will organically promote or advocate on your behalf through engagement. Since engagement, whether it be a share, a re-tweet, a like, is the lifeblood of social media, thus it’s crucial that your content is the beating heart pumping it. Thus, you need to have a unique angle‌something that’s different, special, and tailored to your particular audience.


Are you being consistent? In addition to sharing interesting content, social media works best when you’re able to post consistently. Having conflicting messages will confuse your customers and harm your brand. Hence, it is important to keep the content you share on social media channels consistent.


Are your social channels just self-promotional? Social media accounts of brands that only promote or share their own products can become a bit boring for followers. It is important to post carefully curated content. You can share funny, interesting and informational content that you are sure your followers will respond to. This gives you an opportunity to have an ongoing conversation you’re your audience/ followers. Remember, content isn’t king. Quality content that speaks to the viewer’s lifestyle and interest is.
