Bull Sale • February 9, 2018 • 1:00 p.m.

elcome to our 19th annual bull sale. This year’s sale could be viewed as the year of change. Yes it’s hard to part ways with some of the old bulls that got us to where we are, but change is necessary. In our never ending quest to find new seedstock, and bring you the best, this calf crop is unmatched. 6 completely new sire groups will be showcased, as well as our old tried and tested genetics. I have been looking forward to seeing this group of calves develop from the day they hit the ground. This group of sale bulls is equal in numbers to last year’s sale, however this will be the largest group of completely new genetics we have ever offered, and they are exciting to say the least. Be sure to study the bulls closely, as I feel they may be as complete of group from top to bottom we have ever presented. Performance, Calving ease, Horned, Polled, Fleckvieh, Red or Black, we’ve got all the bases covered, with something for everyone’s needs. The bulls themselves are developed the same as in the past, on a TMR cereal silage based ration. They are in a large spacious pen allowing them to get proper exercise. We took advantage of the warmer weather so our yearling weights were taken a month earlier, therefore some of the younger bulls won’t have adjusted yearling weights. I assure you the quality is every bit as good as in the past or better. Huge emphasis is placed on physical soundness, performance, and disposition. I am super confident in the fact these bulls can go out and breed and last a life time. We are very proud of the fact we have several well aged bulls out still working in commercial herds, some well into their teens. A herd bull purchase is a significant investment, and so it should be as they play such a huge role in your bottom line. We don’t just hope they last, we expect them to last, and contribute to your bottom line for many, many years. A statement we are very committed to is “Our goal is not just to sell you one bull today. Our goal is to sell you several bulls over many years.” We are in this business for the long haul, and if you have issues, we have issues. At Anchor D Ranch our objective is to provide you with not only top end genetics, but top end customer service. We strive to add value to every purchase you make from us. As in the past few years we have hosted the “Anchor D Ranch Simmental Sired Calf Sales”. They have been well received by both the buyers and sellers. This is a program we truly believe in, and much like our own breeding program continue to fine tune to maximize the potential of them. This year we have added a third sale, and tightened up the window, hosting all 3 sales within a 4 day window, so that anyone wishing to purchase these genetics can get those calves all in, in a timely matter and also be able to get trucking lined up at a premium time of year. This years sale dates are VJV Rimbey, October 2, VJV Ponoka, October 3 & VJV Dawson Creek, October 5. We are once again very pleased to have a strong working relationship with Boehringer Animal Health, and our local Veterinarian, Gull Lake Veterinary Services. We are one of a few herds to be recognized by Boehringer with Elite Herd Health Status, and are on the Express 10 Health Program. We are committed to producing superior genetics, with superior health protocol. At the time I write this year’s welcome letter 2017 is quickly coming to a close, and it has been a great year in the cattle industry to say the least. The fall run has seen some great prices in the commercial sector, where producers have reaped rewards for the heavy weight calves again. It was once again very evident that the heavy quality calves demanded a premium, and top end replacement females were highly sought after, both as breds and open heifer calves. On the purebred side I don’t know if there has been a buzz like this fall since the early years of the exotic cattle making their way to Canada. Wow is likely the best way to describe what took place. The demand for superior Simmental genetics is perhaps at an all-time high. It will be an interesting bull sale season to say the least. I think much like this past fall the momentum will carry through, and some of the very good purchases will be done early this sale season. We invite you to join us Friday, February 9 at the ranch for our sale. You are certainly welcome to come view the bulls any time prior to the sale, as well as joining us sale day for a fantastic lunch prior to the sale. If you are unable to attend in person please don’t hesitate to give us a call anytime to discuss your needs. Hope to see you all February 9!

The wait is over, the “French Attack’s” are here! I don’t think another animal has ever created this much excitement for us. The day we purchased “French Attack” I knew we had something truly special. My phone lit up like a Christmas tree within minutes of purchasing him, with much anticipated excitement as to what we were going to do with him. Well here is the first group of his sons to sell, and they are special. Like every other new herd bull he was given a variety pack of cows to see what he can do. There is no doubt he is a power bull. He sired big strong calves that hit the ground running. As you will see they have explosive growth, tremendous length, muscle shape, extremely sound, big footed and tremendous hair coats, combined with super dispositions. His heifer calves are every bit as impressive as his bull calves. We look forward to his genetic impact in our program for many many years to come.

“Exquisite” has to rank among the top of the pen for me. This big thick hairy powerhouse comes from a no miss cow that always gives a front end contender. She produced one of my favorite bulls in the pen a couple years ago selling to Grant Bailey, as well as females that have went to Nolara Farms & Brian Mardy. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind “Exquisite” will add muscle, growth, and hair adding a big broad top and backed by an incredible cow family that will leave you solid replacement females as well. A very deserving lot #1 in this year’s sale.

You may remember the excitement caused by “T-Rex’s” brother “Raptor” a couple years ago, being our high selling bull at $60,000. “T-Rex” is a big solid power bull who has one of the most impressive dams that graces our pastures. As a little word of advice you can’t go wrong with any of these bulls off of a “Barbossa” cow, good doesn’t even begin to describe them. I look for big things from “T-Rex” he has everything he needs in all the right places. He won’t get noticed as much as some of his brothers sale day, but trust me he is every bit as good, be sure to find him he won’t disappoint you.

There was a wee bit of excitement in the air the day “Shazam” was born. Just everything about him is right. There is no question he is the darkest bull in the pen, including black highlights. “Shazam” is a bull that combines it all into one fabulous package, very smooth fronted, broad topped, all four black pigmented feet, loads of hair, and polled to boot. He is not a fluke either. This is a super star cow family who has produced herd bulls like “Fake ID, King’s Ransom & Camouflage”, as well as several good commercial bulls as well. “Shazam” is a bull that will make an impact on the breed. Anchor D Ranch wishes to retain 100 straws of semen for in herd use only. You won’t find many like him this spring, and his marketing potential may be unmatched.

“Eisenhower” has been another standout from birth. He was shown this summer at the AYCS where he was very well received. In the “French Attack” sire group, “Eisenhower” is the most like his sire out of all the bulls in my opinion, including the same laid back attitude. If you liked “French Attack” as a calf, then I promise you will like “Eisenhower”. He has super length, a huge top and a massive deep quarter. He is blood red, and also has four pigmented feet. He also comes from an impeccable cow family. Same old story when buying a herd bull make sure the dam is worthy. “Becca” isn’t the prettiest cow in the pen with her frozen ears and tail, but trust me she is a work horse that out produces herself every time, and is backed by some tremendous cow families both top and bottom side of the pedigree. We certainly believe in his potential and Anchor D Ranch wishes to retain 100 straws of semen for in herd use only. I can honestly say if we didn’t already own “French Attack” either “Shazam or Eisenhower” would be staying here.

“Emperor” is a plainer colored bull who has a lot of good things going for him, but may be this year’s sale sleeper. His dam “Saturn” was a cow we sold as a high seller one year to CDR Simmentals. We were given the chance to purchase all their cows and seized the opportunity. She does have a tendency to produce birth weight, that’s just who she is, regardless of sire choice. This is a bull with a smashing pedigree, and I promise will be well worth the look. Not to make excuses but his yearling weight will be a bit distorted as with all the ice in early December he was very sore prior to weigh day, so he was certainly tucked up. Be sure to have a good look at him sale day he will be a bull that will sire a great group of heavy weight steer calves in the fall.

A really different pedigree from a great young cow we brought up from Texas as a heifer calf. This is also a female that is no stranger to producing front end contenders. Wow it hardly seems right to be referring to “Epic” as one of the old boys, and the old saying time flys when you’re having fun would apply here, as “Epic” has been a fun addition to our program. He has been a super producer for us, and was relied heavily on when we lost “Maximus” as our go to guy. I think when you see the consistency of his sire group, and look back on past sales and see his contribution you truly realize how valuable of building piece he has been in our program. He has produced many high sellers over the years, but much like “Barbossa” we are now seeing the other dimension of his genetic value in the daughters that are now in full swing of production. He is a bull that will add power, and length. He was used in the heifer pen but due to his sheer size was only there for a few years, but is very easy calving as well. His daughters have excellent udders, and the disposition he throws is excellent. One of our favorite bulls of all time.

“Estrada” comes from a no miss cow. She puts a contender in the pen every year regardless if it’s a bull or a heifer. This is going to be one of the bulls that I brag on about keeping as many females as you can from him as they will be wicked good, and with the male calves, well just take those big cheques to the bank. I’m a firm believer in if it’s not broke don’t fix it, and we have done this same cross before with success. Point and case the last two years he has had 2 half brothers in the sale, both have sold to Scotsford Colony. That is as good of endorsement as he can be given.

This will be a player. “Explicit” is one of the bulls that you don’t notice so much in the pen, until you bring the group in and start working with them. In a big pen he gets glanced past, but shouldn’t. When you stop and analyze him, he has as much to offer as any bull out there. He is a big time performance bull, and backed by one of our stellar cow families. I like this bull more every day, and admire his length of spine, and smoothness, but also the muscle shape he possesses. He is extremely well balanced and will be a very impressive mature bull to say the least.

The “Noon” boys are from full sisters, of which we have 4 full sisters in our herd, all of which are fabulous. I absolutely love the shape, muscle pattern, capacity and volume of this bull. There is little doubt in my mind that “Shanghai Noon” ranks at the top end of the pen, and will be found at the front of the sale order as well. The “Epic” sire group is solid from top to bottom, and “Escalade” is just another example. His dam is another cow that is no stranger to producing front end contenders, including a $17,000 female who was our high seller a couple years ago to Beechinor brothers. She turned around and raised a breeder bull as a first calver who was one of their lead off lots at last years bull sale. Coincidence? I think not. Yet another top end cow family, hard at work to produce the goods. The “Herlinde” cow family has been one of our main building blocks for many years. Although this cow family is a bit smaller for us “Elwood” comes from the great “Anna” cow family that has had a major contribution to the breed. “Anna” was a mature cow when we purchased her, in hopes of adding some females to our program. The numbers are small but the quality huge. “Elwood” is a full brother to the dams of lot #66 & #67, a couple of extremely good calving ease bulls. I’m certain as you see looking through our catalogue we don’t place huge emphasis on birth weight, but do have huge emphasis on calving ease. Birth weight is merely a number, but when calving 400 cow calving ease is a must. “Elwood” is a great example of that. Look at his length and tell me he won’t weigh more, as well as the fact all our calves walk across the scale on their way out of the barn. That extra length also contributes to extra pounds in the fall which = $$$.

Regardless of show career or not, he is a powerhouse, that will produce among the best. Excellent length of spine, a big deep rear ¼ and a big flat topline are some of his many fine qualities. This has been a solid producing cow family for Garren, producing the likes of “Churro, Moloka’I & Mr. Gibbs”. His Grand dam & great Grand dam have both found their way to the donor pen. As I mentioned before when herd bull shopping be sure the dam is equal to the challenge. “Epcot’s” dam is a young cow with a bright future, and no doubt will produce many more in her lifetime.

This is the last bull in the “Epic” sire group, who comes from a cow we purchased from Porter Ranches. As they were scaling back their Fleckvieh division, this is a female we felt was at or near the top end of their program. Although “Puzzle” is getting some age on her, she can still produce them. “Epic Puzzle” matches his name as he is a true combination of the best traits from both parents combing to make this genetic masterpiece. He will be an extremely solid commercial herd bull that has longevity bred well into him.

It was a pretty sad day this spring when we said goodbye to “Moomba”. He is a young bull we had huge hopes for, and unfortunately we have no semen bank stored on him, so essentially this is it. Thankfully for us in his first year he ran super heavy to heifer calves, and we retained every daughter. He only had one bull calf in the sale last year, who sold for $18,000. Pretty nice opening act. We do have more of a split group of bulls and heifers this year, but I am certain if we sell any females they will be very limited, the ones getting ready to calve look amazing. He was as easy of fleshing bull as we have ever owned, with a huge big round foot and an obscenely deep rear ¼. A true beef bull that will add volume and muscle shape, and it looks as though his females will be top shelf as well. We are hoping to have a few calves off him this calving season, but the odds don’t appear to be very high, so this could very well be the last of the “Moomba’s”.

The first of the “Moomba” sons, and he’s a dandy. “Excel” comes from an excellent producing cow we bought from Ferme Sibelle. She is a no miss cow, and “Excel” certainly lives up to our expectations as to what this cow can do. He is dark red, heavily pigmented, with a great hair coat, a flawless structure, and a great pedigree. He will be an extremely versatile bull that will be able to be used on a wide option of cows, and should really put a similar stamp on them all. He ranks high on my list in this sire group.

Don’t overlook this guy, as I said I know on paper he is not the most impressive, but I Promise for dollars invested there is little doubt in my mind he will be great. Without question a pen favorite of ours and many visitors. “Mootumba” is an all meat no potatoes type of bull. If you want to make them thick, hairy, and have lots of capacity and muscle, then he’s your guy. “Mootumba” not only has a unique pedigree, but very much an outcross pedigree for us. He is from a tremendous productive cow, with an all-star cow family behind her. I feel as though “Mootumba” will work well on a large selection of cows, but I would really like to see what he could do on a set of Char based cows, I think those calves would be knockouts.

“Ero” is a very different pedigree. One of the things that drew us to “Moomba” was his genetic makeup, not necessarily new genetics, but a combination that just hasn’t really been seen out there. “Ero” is kind of the same story. Old proven genetics on the dam’s side that aren’t typically found together, makes him quite different. Not the biggest bull in the pen, but certainly a very capacious dark red bull that will produce an extremely great pen of replacement females and a very respectful group of steer calves as well.

“Moolah” is another younger calf, that as you can see will not have an adjusted 365 day weight just due to his young age at yearling weight time. He is a dark red thick haired calf from one of our old favorite cows. The last few years she has tailed off a bit in production due to age I’m sure, but this cow has produced alongside the best. Some of these younger bulls will appear to be priced very right sale day, and in a sale later in the spring would know doubt cost a lot more. Use that to your advantage as this will be a tremendous mature bull.

My initial plan was to keep “Revere” back as a spare, but we decided to add him in. He is a smooth polled “Moomba” calf, that is one of the youngest in the group, and although he isn’t the biggest bull in the pen he certainly has a lot to offer. This is a very smooth well balanced individual that is very clean fronted with exceptional length of spine. Although his birth weight may not indicate it, I would certainly class him as a calving ease specialist. I dare say if you turn bulls out a bit later this will be a bull you will appreciate that much more later in spring. As a two year old he will be absolutely impressive.

“Apex” was another pasture favorite all summer long. His dam is just a young cow, but no stranger to producing at the front of the pack. As a first calver she raised an $11,000 herd bull for Rocking R, followed up by raising 2 top end females retained by ourselves, and now “Apex”. I’m fairly confident that she will be making her way to our donor pen in the very near future. We really considered retaining this bull for our own herd with the loss of “Moomba” but opted to just retain 100 units of semen for in herd use only. This is a serious herd bull in the making whose photo does not do justice to him.

We only left her dry this past year to flush as we were afraid of how fat she would get if we left her any longer. The picture in the catalogue was taken this past summer at age 10 by Garren. Some of you may remember the full brother to “Encore” in the sale last year “Dominance”, who went to Pine Hill Colony, or the big yellow bull “Yellowstone” the year before that went to Ferrybank Colony. Although the color pattern is different this year, we still have a big solid beef bull in the sale. His dam has been a great producer for us, and she has the ability to make them polled from horned sires time and time again. This is a monster of a bull that I can hardly wait to see a set of his steer calves hit a sale ring. I can hardly wait to see what she has in store for us next year with “French Attack” I am excited.

“Edoardo” is another of those bulls that you just have to appreciate for what he is going to do. This will be a bull that will produce sale topping steer calves at any sale ring throughout the country. I would guess a set of his steers in the feedlot will do nothing but grow into money. A bull with a great frame, and growth, but let’s not forget about the maternal aspects as well. Backed by a great cow family he is a bull that should be able to do it all, and be priced in everyone’s budgets. You can’t go wrong with “Edoardo.”

I am a super fan of “Dalyn”. We sold a full brother to him last year to Bill Orlick, and I liked that calf so much at birth his dam went right back in the same pen. I’m a believer in if it’s not broke don’t fix it, and I suspect she will find her way back in the same pen yet again, as this is a great young herd bull in the making. Not the first bull in the pen you notice, but when you take the time to walk through and really study them, “Dalyn” is a bull that you keep finding over and over again. Not too much you could change on him, he’s just pretty darn correct, and pretty darn good. Good solid bull here.

“Ezra” is one of the bulls I was honestly hoping to be a heifer calf. He is from one of our favorite cows, who is starting to show her age, and this cow family has been as solid of producing family as we own. “Ezra” is built like a tank. If you need to add thickness, and capacity this dude will do it and then some. We sold a full brother to him last year, to Flewelling Livestock, and have a full sister in our herd as well. I think the capabilities of this bull are huge. He isn’t going to add frame size, but will certainly add pounds and ease of fleshing.

A bull with a very different bottom side to his pedigree, tracing back to “Hafkenberg”. We sold a sister to “Edson” this past fall in our production sale to Javier Jauregui, in Mexico. This is a bull very similar to his sire. Very thick, broad topped, with lots of muscle expression, and tons of hair. His dam has a little extra frame, so I suspect this bull will be a perfect blend to put you right where you need to be. Just an extremely solid cowboy type bull.

This will be a bull you will want to keep a couple extra daughters from as they will be good, and the disposition will be second to none. You may remember seeing “Morocco” in last year’s sale catalogue, where he was lot #72. Just prior to semen testing he got stepped on which took him out of the sale. Interestingly he boast the record of being the heaviest bull we have ever weaned, and he has a very unique pedigree which drew many calls last year. Fortunately for us we kept him around, and healed him up. When “Moomba” went down on us early in breeding season, “Morocco” was turned into the go to guy. He ended up breeding over 20 head for us last year, and we will have calves on the ground sale day. We seriously considered keeping him, however decided that we will have one calf crop, and we do have lots related to him on the dam side so we decided to let him go. If you want to add outcrossed genetics, and big time performance, look no further.

Her dam is the cow I consider to be “Dorothy Jane’s” best daughter, then of course, next on the family tree is “Dorothy” herself, then “Star Gazer”. This is the final calf crop for “Windsurfer” as we unfortunately lost him last winter. He was as impressive of bull as we have ever walked. He possessed great thickness, broad based, and extremely correct. He was without question one of the most physically sound bulls we have ever walked and throws that same skeletal structure and foot structure to his sons and daughters. Look to the “Windsurfer” sons to add sheer power, extra muscle, ease of fleshing and longevity into a calf crop. He was an intimidating looking bull, but was as gentle natured as they came, and always eagerly awaited his daily back scratch. He will be deeply missed here, but has a very strong group of daughters that will carry on his lineage here.

I realize his strong suit for us has been his calving ease, but his daughters are truly something else. The grandsire of “Davidson”, “Damascus” is a bull we sold as a yearling to Rick & Evelyn Sanderson. We were fortunate to have been able to lease him back one year when we obtained a breeding injury to one of our own herd bulls, and liked the calves so much we were able to use him a second year as well. In that second year we were that much more selective in sorting a pen of cows to try and obtain as many daughters from as we could. He is very much like “Antonius” in the fact that his sons were good, but his daughters were outstanding. “Davidson” is a bull very similar in the fact that he will produce a great set of steer calves, but trust me, keep as many of his daughters as you can as they will be stellar.

She produced a $14,000 female in their sale this fall as a first calver. He also had a full brother in last year’s sale that was one of my personal favorites, who sold to Peaceview Colony. “Delaney” is no accident as not only can this cow produce the front enders, but this entire cow family can. If you market your calves in the fall right off the cow, then this guy should have a big star by his lot number. If you feed your own calves out add a second star and if retaining replacement females is a high priority then add a third. I like him a lot.

The physical soundness and athleticism in both of them was outstanding, as well as their ease of fleshing, and overall muscling. “Aegon” went on to be the high selling bull at the Synergy sale, and has been a valuable addition to our program. I would expect his sons to be moderate framed, easy keeping bulls, with great physical soundness, longevity, and be able to add muscle and mass into a calf crop.

She is one of those cows who maybe doesn’t stand out in the spring, but you always take note of her at weaning time, as she always has a calf at the front of the pack. “Evander” seems to have the same laid back attitude as his mother, as well as her phenomenal length of spine. He is a deep bodied dark red rugged bull who will do a great job as someone’s next herd bull.

I happened to mention on lot #51 how much he reminded me of his sire, well the same story with “Excalibur”, as “Aegon” has really stamped his sire group. This is going to be an outstanding young stud that comes to us via the same cow family as “Raptor”. His dam was one of the final cows retained by Hiemstras, when we bought the remainder of their cow herd. She has been a super valuable addition to our herd, as she is one of those cows you can pretty well be bred to any bull and know you’re in for a good one. This has been a favorite of mine from this sire group all the way along. I really think “Excalibur” has something a little extra to offer.

Anyone looking for a complete outcross to our program, here is “Eagle”. We purchased his dam from Eagle Ridge Simmentals, she is a very nice productive young cow with a perfect paint job. You won’t find a fullblood with much more pigmentation than her. “Eagle” is a bull that I grow to appreciate more every day, and he is really starting to come on. His yearling weight will be a bit distorted as he was nursing a leg boo boo prior to weigh in, but it is what it is. With close to 120 baby bulls in the pen some tend to play a bit rough on the playground, and “Eagle” happened to be on the wrong end of that. He’s heeled up now and ready to go, and I really encourage you to have a good look at him this is a very nice young bull.

I remember making the statement about “Maximus” a few years ago that there isn’t necessarily one stand out in his group, as a whole just how consistent they are. I think the same rules will apply to “Aegon’s” group as they are pretty much cookie cutters. “Egon” fits the same package, moderate framed, deep bodied, extremely sound, well-muscled, just plain honest and good. He comes from a very nice young cow, whose dam was an older cow when we purchased her. Although we didn’t have her long, we had her long enough to get a few daughters into our herd. Please note one of our very best red bulls “Empire” lot #84 is from one of her daughters. For dollars invested “Egon” will be a super addition to anyone’s bull battery.

“Extra” is the only “Aegon” son from a first calving heifer. We tend to try our new bulls on a good cross section of cows, and I felt with the overall smoothness of “Aegon” he may work on heifers so we tried him on a handful. He is just a bit too much for heifers, but does calve very well. I know I sound like a broken record, but “Extra” is also very much like his sire, as this sire group is pretty well stamped one after the other. “Extra” is a super nice bull that will offer just a little extra punch.

His dam is a very nice young cow sired by “Maximus” and off of our good old “Hera” cow, who we kept in production until age 18. Her dam of course was “Herlinde” who was one of our main donor cows for many years. “Exon” is a well muscled bull, with extra pigmentation, and dark red. I cannot express how delighted we are to have “Entourage” back in our program. Last year was his debut for us in the bull sale where he was very well received, and his females in this falls production sale blew us away as a group. This is a bull that can produce both superior males and females. This year’s sire group looks a bit different than last years, as he ran extremely heavy to heifers. He actually had last years biggest sire group, going to one of the smallest this year. That’s fine by us, as we are really looking forward to adding more of his daughters into our herd as they are wicked good. “Entourage” will add tremendous length of spine, as well as huge muscle shape. He has incredible feet, and an extremely docile nature. He is an absolute gentleman to be around. On a side note he is Mom & Dad’s favorite herd bull of ours, easy enough to see why.

Hello, I’m “Mr. Ed”. I think in the “Entourage” sire group if someone sneaks under the radar it will be “Mr. Ed”. This is a pretty solid young bull that tends to get missed in this large group. I realize it sounds funny saying a February calf is a youngster, but he is one of the younger bulls in the pen, and he’s really quite good. I can’t call him dark red, but he does have lots of black pigmentation, so I would approve him for use on a set of black commercial cows for sure. “Echo” is one of the babies in the group. A late February calf, from a good old producing cow we purchased from Bar 5. She is no stranger to raising a herd bull, as she has one son in the Semex sire catalogue. “Echo” is a very long bodied bull with a very defined rear ¼, much like his sires. He too will add longevity, as his dam is set to calve for us again this spring at age 14, and is still extremely sound. I mentioned before a handful of these younger bulls may tend to be overlooked slightly, as they are still really developing, and would be much more suited for a later sale. Well this is kinda funny. “Mr. Gibbs” typically has a huge sire group of big power bulls, that’s just what we come to expect from him, and I’m certain we will see again in next years sale. Last year he had a breeding injury which took him out of commission early on in the season so “Dibbs” is his lone entry. The other factor that is interesting is “Dibbs” is a calving ease bull I would not hesitate to use on heifers. There is power in this pedigree, look at “Encore” lot #33 who is the full brother to his dam, point and case. The merits of “Dibbs” are the strong cow family, his phenomenal color pattern, smooth polled, and smooth fronted for calving ease, and these calving ease bulls aren’t the easiest to find. I got a really good feeling about “Dibbs” and what he is going to do in the long haul.

She is what you imagine when you think of Fleckvieh. This young cow has a history of producing great ones, including “Mazorotti” who now works for R-Five Simmentals, and “Rosel” who is the dam of lot #47. What can we say about the old master that hasn’t already been said. “Barbossa” is a bull that has contributed so much to our program. He was initially added into our bull battery as simply a calving ease sire, which he has done effortlessly. However the calves are extra good. Sure they aren’t all super stars, but he has sired his fair share. Now fast forward to the daughters that are in production, and wholly crap they are mind blowing. When you study through the catalogue or past catalogue it is very interesting to see how many of the front end contenders come from his daughters. I’m not a numbers guy as most of you know, I believe the best numbers are the ones with dollar signs at the commercial sale barn, but for the EPD enthusiasts, you won’t find a Fullblood bull with a better set of stats out there. Keep in mind that he has been used exclusively on heifers from his second calf crop. He has now aged on us and his days are limited. I am hoping to squeeze another year out of him and likely if we can it will be on a select group of mature cows so these “Barbossa” sons will become a bit of a rare commodity. We thought he deserved to be this years cover bull as he has done so much for our program.

“Eclipse” is from a good first calving heifer that I have incredibly high hopes for. She is a smooth polled “Viper x Dulcie” daughter from our ET program. The “Dulcie” daughters we have in production are impeccable and I expect this cow to be no different. “Eclipse” will be a great heifer bull with his modest birth weight, and a true calving ease pedigree. I think similar to “Barbossa” in that you may not truly appreciate his true value until his daughters get into production.

Here is another chance to buy a polled very pigmented calving ease candidate. His grand sire is “Mr. Gibbs” who is a performance bull no doubt, but as you will notice in his son “Dibbs” lot #63 he will offer some calving ease as well. Another thing we found very interesting with “Mr. Gibbs” is that when he is used on polled cows more often than not we get polled calves, even though he is horned himself. “End Zone” offers all the options. Polled, calving ease, performance, maternal and color.

This is the first calf from “Patty” even though she does have some extra age. We purchased her from Tryon Simmentals in PEI as a bred heifer, and unfortunately she lost her calf on the ride home. We wanted to ensure calving ease in her even though she had lots of size so “Raptor” was the sire of choice. This guy came smooth polled with a super moderate birth weight and considering the shot of “Arnolds Image” on the bottom side of the pedigree as well I think he would be a safe candidate for use on heifers as well.

I would be a bit more selective with “Enzo” if you are using him on heifers. I do feel as though he will still offer calving ease, but he is a bit stouter made, more like his dam, than the other “Barbossa” sons. He also has a pedigree with a bit more performance stacked in it, so I think he is a bit more appropriate for second calvers or for someone who just wants to factor in calving ease on their cow herd. I also think there is more performance here than what really meets the eye as he is from just a heifer, who I feel will be an absolute work horse for us in time. She has the look of being a big solid brood cow. Regardless how you view him he is a very honest bull.

We dipped back in the tank for this one. “Regis” was our mainstay heifer bull for many years. He was much like “Barbossa” in the fact that he was virtually bomb proof in a heifer pen. This guys dam is a beautiful long bodied female we purchased as a heifer calf from Jayshaw Simmentals. I would expect “Regis” to be extremely easy calving as he is built perfectly for use in a heifer pen. Not a whole lot of guess work here.

We purchased “Precision” from our good friends at Virginia Ranch, where he was the high seller in their sale that year. Our hopes were he would be able to work in a heifer pen, with a bit more performance, we felt if he didn’t work there he would be a solid addition on the main cow herd. This bull has absolutely blown us away, and we couldn’t be happier with him. He calved extremely well on the heifers he was given, and when used on cows he didn’t let up, and produced power. He tends to run short on gestation, which makes him very valuable in the heifer pen. He is a rare find in a bull that can absolutely cover all bases, and has developed into an outstanding young herd bull. He was given a small group of cows last year and worked mainly in the heifer pen as our hopes are he will be able to be “Barbossa’s” replacement. Look to his sons to add capacity and rib shape, calving ease, performance, pigmentation, strong maternal values, and his calves are very docile.

Where to begin with “Disco”. Well this is maybe as solid of pedigree as we have in a heifer bull. “Precision, Radison, Metro, Barbossa, Antonius” are the names right on the papers. Any one of those bulls is a heifer bull candidate, little lone stack them all together. Now the best part, just look at him. WOW, how can you fault him? He’s thick, broad topped, deep bodied, has performance, has calving ease, has color, has pedigree, what would you change? This is a breeder bull no doubt in my mind, and even though he doesn’t have a big picture, he is a big picture bull for sure. As I’ve stated before heifer bulls are usually some of the toughest to source, well don’t look too long or someone else will be taking “Disco” to the dance.

Well the first three “Precision” sons were all from first calvers, “Espionage” is from a second calver, and he still moderates birth weight, but now we have a little more gas in the tank. Still the same style stamp as the other, just a bit more jam here. “Espionage” should work similar to his sire in being able to work either end of the pen. His grand sire “Epic” was used on heifers as well, but as you know offers lots of performance as well. His dam had another phenomenal bull in the sale last year selling to Mark Undershultz. As I mentioned in the write up on “Precision” himself, his sire group is super quiet. This may be Mr. Personality of the pen. Super laid back, not too much interrupts his day. One thing I know from the many years at the commercial sale barn, these docile cattle tend to have a whole lot less shrink, and typically start up on feed that much better. Honestly we could feature almost all the “Precision” bulls, but “Emmett” has been the power standout of the group all along. He has the same features as his brothers, there is just a little more to him, and so there should be from a mature cow. His dam “Candy” is no stranger to raising the good ones, including a herd bull that went to Eagle Ridge Simmentals. He goes back to our great old “Romulus” donor cow in “Emma”, and a shot of “Meister” just tells me his daughters will be exceptional. The other cool feature of “Emmett” is his super disposition. Thank You

It is a great honor to be writing this as the recipient of the Trevor Vance Memorial Scholarship. Receiving this Scholarship is truly humbling I would like to thank the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for this. I know for sure that I will be a part of Anchor D Ranch and the purebred Simmental world forever. My love, passion and drive will be a strong asset in being a voice in educating people on where their food comes from. I believe that Simmental cattle with their early maturing, carcass qualities, maternal qualities and ability to cross well with any other breed makes them a true leader in the cattle industry. It’s our job to promote them, and be their voice. Mackenzie Skeels

“Louie” has done an outstanding job for us over the years. He was a bull that we could confidently use in our heifer pen, as well as on our cows and know we still would have a very marketable calf in the end. With our smaller purebred numbers we needed that versatility in a bull as we just didn’t have the numbers to justify a third purebred herd bull. Last year was “Louie’s” final breeding season for us, as he broke his leg after breeding, and with no semen in the tank next year will be his final sire group. His daughters are wonderful females that have his ease of fleshing and depth of body, and have beautiful udders. They are females that appear as though they will last a very long time for us. His sons will add calving ease, ease of fleshing, capacity, and muscle.

Because of our smaller purebred numbers we felt we needed to step up our game a bit more, and we felt that the use of some top end AI bulls would be one of our best options. We were delighted to buy one of the limited semen packages on the $165,000 “Westcott” bull. The calves we have we are extremely pleased with, and we did use him on a variety of cows. The calves may vary a bit, but the great traits are consistent on them all. “Eastcott” is a dark red stylish bull, with great length and natural thickness. He has a big broad top, a huge rear quarter, tremendous capacity, and a deep chest floor. When this bull gets out on the move he can really cover the ground as he moves like a cat. I think his options are endless, and as an added bonus he is Homozygous Polled as well.

I don’t know if we have ever produced a black bull quite this good in my mind. “Eldorado” is the little brother to “Glacier” who was our high selling purebred bull a couple years ago to Soderglen Ranches. His dam obviously can do it, and his grand dam “Painted Smile” is our cornerstone black cow. I really appreciate the overall balance and eye appeal of “Eldorado”, his muscle shape, his structure, and his tremendous hair coat. There is no doubt in my mind he deserves to be a breeder bull, you decide, he’s the right kind. Homo Polled test pending – will have by sale day.

“Easton” come to you via our ET program. He is a direct son of “Painted Smile” and being off of “Viper” makes him a ¾ brother to “Glacier”. This is a very unique individual that offers the Fleckvieh traits in a Black Purebred package, complete with a money stripe. I feel much like with “Glacier” you will like his bulls but absolutely adore his females. Throw him on straight British cows, or cross bred cows it won’t matter “Easton” will excel in either area. I realize as an ET calf he isn’t raised by his own mom, but keep in mind his dam is a 15 year old cow who is as sound as sound can be. Lots of longevity here as well. Homo polled test pending.

“Glacier” was our high selling Purebred bull a few years ago for $21,000 to Soderglen Ranches. It is a pleasure to work with these great people, as we have use of “Glacier” for winter calving and then use him for Summer. Therefore “Glacier” will naturally cover a large number of cows per year. With his first calf crop we used him on a wide selection including heifers. He calved very well, but just a bit too much torque for use on heifers. I like his bull calves but his heifer calves are fabulous. As you will see his calves he does a pretty good job of putting a money stripe on them, they have great hair, and he tends to throw more blacks than red. Use his sons to add maternal, length, hair, and growth.

“Elazar” is a power bull. He comes from a really nice “Poker Face” cow Garren bought from Barry LaBatte as a heifer calf. “Elazar” is the only red bull we have this year from 2 black parents. This big stout red baldie bull does have extra performance, and will sire extra pounds to a set of steer calves. He is a bull that I would use on a heavy British based group of cows that you want to add a bit more performance and stretch into those calves. I look forward to seeing his steer calves in the future.

I’ve always been a big fan of “Ellington”. He has been a standout in this sire group from day one. I am very happy with the pedigree combination of him as well, blending two of our top purebred cow families all into one. I think his versatility will be unmatched siring both tremendous steers and replacement heifers. He will sire performance and growth, but be able to do so in a moderate framed package. His two grandmothers are both still here at age 15 & 16, yes longevity is factored in as well. A great black baldie bull. Homo polled test pending.

Another black baldie bull in “Black Lane”. He is from Mackenzie’s original purebred cow. She has been a solid producer for Mackenzie producing many commercial bulls over the years. She is another cow who is no stranger to giving us birth weight with absolutely no issues, it’s just how she rolls. She is a cow you can breed to an absolute bomb proof calving ease sire or a performance bull, just expect your birth weights to always be in this range regardless who the sire is. “Black Lane” will sire a set of steers with tremendous length, and growth. He should give you some extra chrome as well which typically equates into more dollars. He will be a nice buy sale day.

“Black Ice” is a very well-muscled bull with tremendous balance. His “King Louie” dam is near perfect. As a first calver she did an outstanding job raising this young stud. I have had my eye on him all summer, and really appreciate the development of him. This is a very nice bull that can work in a big cross section of cows. I think his options are limitless, and will be a bull that produces some outstanding offspring in his time.

“Equalizer” is the final “Glacier” son in the sale. He comes from a very thick moderate framed cow who I am quite high on. She produced one of our top purebred bulls in last years sale going to Dennis Herman. This is one of the younger bulls, and at the time of doing footnotes, has really started to gain some momentum. I would venture a guess that his catalogue picture may not be so descriptive come sale day. This could be a bit of a sleeper. They call them sale sleepers so that you are awake and paying attention. Don’t be a sleeper sale time.

As we are still continuing to grow our purebred division, we have really tried to develop some core females. That was my thought when we produced “Eli”. I was feeling lucky when I used “Lotto” and took a shot at producing a female from his dam. No such luck, but having said that what a bull we were able to produce. A long bodied powerful bull that will sire both great males and females. I encourage you to keep lots of his daughters. He too will have Homo Polled test results back by sale day.

“Elway” is one of the top performance bulls in the whole pen. I mentioned last fall in the heifer sale catalogue about a big black bull that will get noticed sale day, this is him. You want to add pounds and performance without giving up any calving ease at all, then look right here. His dam is an outstanding producer that I am hoping to get another heifer calf from to start developing a core around her. Solid black, solid made, solid choice. Homo polled test pending.
