Silver Smith Farms Welcome to the 13th annual Mappin Simmentals Bull Sale offering. Thank you for your interest in this year’s offering - as well as your trust in our cattle in the past. 2017 was a good year for the Canadian cattle business with excellent calf prices, and 2018 looks like it will be strong as well, with good feeder cattle prices in the new year. Simmental replacement females are a hot commodity and are worth a premium these days, with many of our customers selling replacement females for as much as their steer calves. What an awesome opportunity to add value to your calf crop and your bottom line, especially when we saw other breeds of female calves so heavily discounted. We feel it part of our job as seedstock producers to offer exceptional reproduction genetics. As such, we utilize a VERY short 42 day breeding season – ensuring that our “bull makers” calve early, clean up and breed back on the tightest of schedules. No second chances in a ‘year round’ calving program here. We believe this means you get a bull with the best reproductive potential possible, and we think that is vitally important to all cattlemen. Many areas of Alberta experienced a very dry late summer/fall in 2017, and our place was no different. By early August our pastures were browning off quickly and it was clear any decent late grazing summer pasture was out of the question. The decision was made to wean about a month earlier than usual – taking place on September 2nd. The calves came in a little lighter than normal, but extremely healthy, and once their mommas were forgotten they never looked back and are an extremely uniform group. We feed a Total Mixed Ration, consisting of a high forage, protein rich ration, as well as a premium mineral pack. Our 2018 offering is coming to town with enough condition you can see their growth potential, but not so fat they will “melt” or forget their job when it comes time to do what you expect of them. You will see we have on offer for the first time this year groups of bulls from our newest herd sires “Venom” and “Steakhouse”. Venom was purchased from the top of the Deeg Simmentals program in 2016. He has been a no miss breeder with performance and uniformity as his specialty. Steakhouse was purchased from the top of Paul Abrams offering at the Ranchlands Sale. Being a son of Reload and from a super sweet blaze face cow, Steakhouse has given us some very fancy bulls and heifers with the distinctive money stripe, as well as a shot of calving ease. So much ease that we bred him to the majority of our heifers in 2017. At time of writing, so far so good with calves coming in averaging 80 pounds with lots of vigor. You may notice we decided not to include EPD’s in this year’s edition. A few years ago, the Canadian Simmental Association decided to amalgamate our Canadian EPD’s with the American Simmental Association EPD data. This move, in our opinion, has significantly shifted the data of the much smaller Canadian registry, resulting in a skewed data for Canadian Simmentals. We feel that the actual information, birth weight, weaning weight, weight per day of age (to weaning), that is provided for each bull in the offering is as true of a guide as we can expect from a yearling bull, and much more accurate in ‘the real world’. Please feel free to search the CSA pedigree registry for each animal’s EPD’s if you feel that helps you make a better decision. Or better yet, come to the farm and view the momma’s of the bulls, and the herd sires, so you can see for yourself important traits such as structure, udder quality and disposition. • Purchased in the spring of 2016 from Paul Abrams, Steakhouse was our pick of Paul’s bulls, based on the cow family backing him, his sound structure, calving ease potential, and cherry red color. A bull who is a curve bender-smaller birthweights with big time performance. • Mothered by a beautiful blaze faced matron, females may be where he shines, although both heifers and bulls are excellent. • Steakhouse sires smaller, short gestation calves, who get up and grow. We had such a great experience calving him, we turned him into our heifer pen in 2017 and are looking forward to seeing what he does there for us. Steakhouse is a very aggressive breeder.

Quantum Genetixâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Horned/Polled Test involves testing for two different genetic events that have been shown to differentiate between horned and polled animals. The polled trait is dominant over horned. Results are reported to the producer as P/P, h/P, and h/h. Interpretations of results are as followed: P/P: the animal is homozygous polled (double polled), meaning it can only pass on a polled trait to its offspring and all offspring will demonstrate the polled trait as well. h/P: the animal is heterozygous polled (horned carrier), meaning that the animal will appear polled but has a 50% chance of passing on a horned allele to its offspring. If two h/P animals are bred together, then there is a 25% chance that their offspring will demonstrate the horned trait. 30

Terms & Conditions Terms: The terms of this sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. Payment due in Canadian Dollars. Bid: Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No private sales will be allowed except as otherwise provided for in the terms and conditions. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Disputes: In some cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid.The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. Purchaser’s risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. Announcements: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Bidders are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements. Certificate of registry: The proper registration or recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after the settlement has been made. Breeders Guarantee: Should any bull fifteen months of age or older fail to prove a natural breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders and free of any venereal disease, the buyer shall report in writing to the seller and provide a report of a complete examination by a qualified veterinarian. This notification shall be provided to the seller no later than four (4) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fifteen (15) months of age, whichever is later. The buyer shall return the bull to the seller at the buyer’s expense. The seller shall have the opportunity to have the bull examined by the veterinarian of his

choice. In the instance of a fertility re-test by the seller the bull must weigh the same or more than his posted adjusted 365-day weight. If the bull falls short of his weight then he must be reconditioned to meet the weight and then re-tested. The seller will then have 45 days to prove this bull a breeder. If this bull proves to be a satisfactory breeder, the bull shall be returned to the buyer. In the event the seller fails to prove the bull a satisfactory breeder the buyer has the option to either accept a replacement F.O.B. the seller’s ranch or a credit equal in value to the actual purchase price. No incidental expenses such as feed, vet charges, interest, etc. will be charged by either party. In no event shall the seller be responsible for reimbursing more than the purchase price. All warranty and responsibility is limited to replacement of the bull in question and is acknowledged by the buyer as a condition of sale. No guarantee is given that the semen collected from the bull will be suitable for freezing and/or artificial insemination. Once the bull is in buyer’s possession, the Seller provides no guarantee to cover health issues which may include but are not limited to: illness, disease, malnutrition, injury or death. Exception to guarantee: In cases where the animal is subject to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void.
