Once again we would like to extend a Welcome to the 17th Annual Mappin Simmentals / Silver Smith Farms Bull Sale. Thank you to everyone who has purchased bulls in the past-we value your business and your loyalty. We are having a live sale on the farm, will be broadcasting via DLMS, and also have more sales consultants available to help you with your purchases. We strongly encourage you to visit the farm in the weeks prior to the sale to analyse the offering, along with the dams, sires and sisters of the sale bulls. We are available to discuss your needs for your next herdsire and would be happy to help you make your selection for a good fit to achieve your breeding goals. We are proud to offer distinct pedigrees that can’t be found everywhere and are a true outcross to many herds. We feel strongly that part of our job as a seedstock producer is to offer exceptional reproduction genetics. As such, we utilize a VERY short 42 day breeding season. We continue to believe this means you get a bull with the best reproductive potential possible, a trait that is vitally important to all cattlemen. All bulls will have passed a semen evaluation and will be ready to work as of sale day. Every bull in the sale, with the exception of one, is a registered purebred and will come with an included transfer of paper. Actual BW, WW and YW are shown on the paper and yes – we do own a calf scale and use it. Also a new metric we have added this year is FRAME SCORE measurement-the scores don’t necessarily mean one bull is superior to the other, but it is an objective measure of skeletal size. See the detailed explanation for further information. The bulls were weaned a little earlier this year on August 25th, and are being fed a TMR, consisting of oat silage, cut hay, super oats, canola meal, and rolled barley along with a custom mineral pack. We work closely with Delta Animal Solutions, Jack Fisher, to ensure the bulls are developed on a balanced ration, high in forage and nutritional value. They have again been an extremely healthy group with lots of energy, Stettler Halkirk so expect to see fresh, well developed, free moving bulls ready to work on sale day. March 5th will be here before we know it. Please give us a call to discuss any of our bulls on offer or make plans Big Valley to mark up your catalogue and come to the farm in the Hwy 590 Hwy 589 weeks prior to the sale or during the sale day viewing from 2-4 pm. We look forward to seeing you. Maureen & Eric

Mappin Simmentals Albert & Jean Mappin Phone: 403-579-3763
Mature bull frame score and corresponding hip height
“Frame scores are an objective, numerical in inches from Beef Improvement Federation description of cattle skeletal size which 4.0 = 54.1 5.0 = 55.9 6.0 = 58.0 7.0 = 60.0 8.0 = 62.0 reflect the growth pattern and potential mature size of an animal. Frame score values typically range from 2-9, and are calculated from hip height and age. Theoretically an animal should have the same frame score throughout its life. The generally preferred range for carcass weights of 650 to 850 lbs. suggests the need to produce feeder cattle with a 5 to 7 range in frame scores.” Sourced from North Dakota State University The bulls were measured on January 2, 2022, and a frame score was calculated using their age in days and hip height. A higher number does not mean a bull is better than the next, or inferior. A higher frame score means he has a larger skeletal size-your cow size and breeding goals will determine which bull is best suited to you. This is an additional selection tool that is objective and highly heritable.
2
All bulls are palpated, scrotal measured and semen evaluated. All are on a full herd health program. This includes Bovi-Sheild, Inforce, 8-way, & One-shot. Bulls returning to the farm after the sale will be cared for to the best of our ability, however if vet costs are incurred due to sickness or injury, these costs will be the responsibility of the purchaser. All bulls offered for sale have passed a semen evalutation.

• X-Bart, as he is known around here, was a great addition to our bull battery. He was our pick of the bulls at the Southwest sale from the good X-T program. Cherry red, long bodied, great muscle and style. His pedigree reads maternal and we are looking forward to keeping every daughter we can. • X-Bart is deceased after only one calf crop and after watching this group of sons develop, it’s sure a shame. They were born moderate, great vigor and were real udder hunters at birth. His pedigree was different enough for us to utilize on almost any cow in our herd so we used him on a wide variety of cows. The pen of 12 son’s is sure to be impressive on sale day. INSET - DAM 402B

• Rip is a breeding piece that could be used in pretty much anyone’s breeding puzzle-thick and tough as nails, just like his namesake. Cherry red, black footed, huge muscle dimension, enough guts and rib, but not so much he loses his athleticism. A creature feature in our sale, and likely this year in the breed. Rip has been gaining just shy of 4 lbs. per day and with a modest birthweight of 93 lbs. he is one to watch for. • Mothered by a young unassuming Venom cow who works hard and weaned this dude off at 825 lbs. She is a medium framed cow with plenty of rib, femininity, and the beautiful udders the Venom daughters all have. Very good cow family.

• Legit is all that and a bag of chips-small birthweight, explosive growth and great muscle definition; all packaged in a compact frame. Legit could be used in a calving ease situation, such as on 2nd calvers, or could be used to knock leg off, without knocking off performance numbers. Legit gained close to 4 lbs. from weaning to December. He is dark red with a great foot under him and a fluid mover. • Mothered by a dark red blaze faced cow who is smaller in stature but a great young matron; plenty of milk but square and tidy uddered, she is smooth made and angular. Lennor Farms, Red Deer County picked up her good Chief son in last year’s sale. Fantastic cow family, going back to a great King Ranch cow.

• I like Grenade more and more as time goes on-Long bodied, wide topped, deep sided, he is hard to find a hole in. He has big hair and is likely one of the lighter colored bulls in the pen. He would throw tan calves if used on light colored or white cows and would add a pile of value in the resulting buckskin heifers being half Simmental. Grenade weaned off at a big 810 lbs., so I am pretty sure his steers will be stout and heavy and at the top of the market.

He was the heaviest sale bull we weaned this fall, coming off at a whopping 875 lbs. and has continued his performance venture. If you need to add frame without losing muscle shape and maternal value, step in here. Whiskey is most comfortable in a herd setting and isn’t a fan of being singled out. • Mothered by a big blaze faced cow who has sent 5 bulls through the sale and raised a few ET calves as well. • Vacation Maker is the power bull of the pen this year, with big weaning and yearling weights, along with a good size frame score, he will do the job of siring the kind the beef industry is demanding-cattle that will convert forage into pounds of beef in a larger carcass. He is hairy, he is stout and long with tons of muscle shape. • Mothered by a large framed Panama daughter-the Venom/ Panama cross has always been a bell ringer and we can see why. She is a massive middled cow with doability and milk. This is her first bull to sell as she has always had heifers.

• One Eye is a unique individual-a blaze faced Venom. Venom typically removes all traces of a blaze of white, but here he is, and one of only a few in existence. A shorter statured bull than his brothers, One Eye is a good haired, wide topped beef bull with extremely strong maternal merit. He would work fantastic on taller cows that need thickened up, or used to make those extraordinary replacement females. • Mothered by a super tanky, big middled Dirty Hairy cow who is very correct in her structure. She is the type of cow who always draws the eye of visitors. She has produced a female in production in our herd, a female working for JEM Simmentals, Barrhead, and a son working at Lyster Bros, Mayorthorpe.

• Homegrown was our lead off bull in 2020 and sold to Springlake Simmentals at Daysland. He was cherry red, heavy haired and black footed, packaged in a moderate, meat packing frame. He was always docile and good natured, and passed that on to his calves. One of the top end females in the replacement pen is a Homegrown daughter. Homegrown’s skull structure was one of a female maker for sure. • The Venom-Panama cross has always been a bell-ringer, and Homegrown’s mother always clicked. Due to a personality conflict with management at calving time, 65B is no longer here, but she was an exceptionally deep bodied, hairy cow with a great udder and milked well.

Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Disputes: In some cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. Purchaser’s risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. Announcements: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Bidders are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements. Certificate of registry: The proper registration or recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after the settlement has been made. Breeders Guarantee: Should any bull fifteen months of age or older fail to prove a natural breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders and free of any venereal disease, the buyer shall report in writing to the seller and provide a report of a complete examination by a qualified veterinarian. This notification shall be provided to the seller no later than four (4) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fifteen (15) months of age, whichever is later. The buyer shall return the bull to the seller at the buyer’s expense. The seller shall have the opportunity to have the bull examined by the veterinarian of his choice. In the instance of a fertility re-test by the seller the bull must weigh the
same or more than his posted adjusted 365-day weight. If the bull falls short of his weight then he must be reconditioned to meet the weight and then re-tested. The seller will then have 45 days to prove this bull a breeder. If this bull proves to be a satisfactory breeder, the bull shall be returned to the buyer. In the event the seller fails to prove the bull a satisfactory breeder the buyer has the option to either accept a replacement F.O.B. the seller’s ranch or a credit equal in value to the actual purchase price. No incidental expenses such as feed, vet charges, interest, etc. will be charged by either party. In no event shall the seller be responsible for reimbursing more than the purchase price. All warranty and responsibility is limited to replacement of the bull in question and is acknowledged by the buyer as a condition of sale. No guarantee is given that the semen collected from the bull will be suitable for freezing and/or artificial insemination. Once the bull is in buyer’s possession, the Seller provides no guarantee to cover health issues which may include but are not limited to: illness, disease, malnutrition, injury or death. Exception to guarantee: In cases where the animal is subject to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. Bull Semen retention: Mappin Simmentals reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold for in herd use. This semen will be collected at the buyer’s convenience and at the seller’s expense. Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sales Management, Auctioneer, or Sellers assume any responsibility in this manner and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of the accident or loss of property. Rights and obligations: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.
