IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE IN CHEERS CALL NOW 3
A
shton once had a vibrant night time economy, most of which killed off by a sequence of events in early 2002 which saw the town’s attractiveness as a night time destination evaporate drastically. Another issue was the attractiveness of Stalybridge as a clubbers’ and drinkers’ paradise, till that too evaporated by the end of the noughties.
when it became Legends. By 2008, it was destroyed by fire. The Feathers: till 2012, in the care of the same landlord since 1971, at Ashton’s peak one of the busiest tight time venues playing old time classics Changed hand in 2012 as LGBT friendly pub, now closed Gig’s Bar: on the corner of Booth Street, possibly short lived as premises is now a charity shop. Former bank building.
Some may claim that the smoking ban and price of drinks was another factor in the town’s fall from grace. Therefore, Ashton on a Friday night is a more ghostly affair than it was over a decade ago. The pubs which have stood the test of time in the centre either carved out a niche (for example, tribute bands and local acts with The Witchwood or heavy rock with The Guzzling Goose), changed their opening hours to better accommodate clientele (The Beau Geste has with gigs at more pensioner friendly times), or remained a quiet watering hole for locals (such as The Caledonia and the Foresters’ Call).
Yuppies/Sparx/Universal: former Conservative Club converted into Yuppies night club, around the late 1980s. Popular with 20 – 30 somethings as Yuppies, later attracted a younger crowd as Sparx. Now vacant. Hudson Bay: opened in late 1980s to cater for upmarket clientele. Closed around mid 1990s, based in former Oddfellows Hall, whose other claim to fame was holding Ashton’s first cinematographic exhibition prior to the opening of the Ideal Picture Palace and Star Cinema nearby.
With falling disposable incomes, public house or night club beer prices have now gone beyond the reach of most lower middle class and working class people in the borough. Pubs becoming off licences have also reflected the shift towards ‘preloading’ before a night out or staying at home to watch The X Factor or a DVD in some neighbourhoods. Suffice to say, Ashton is no exception and of the major towns in the United Kingdom, probably among the worst hit from the Beer Tax Escalator – hence The Wellington becoming a TESCO Express – and The Burlington being closed for more than four years, still empty.
Blues Nightclub: at one time, Ashton’s main LGBT friendly night spot. Often catered for homosexual and lesbian thirty somethings though popular among most Ashtonians in the late 1980s. Refurbished and renovated in the early noughties. Spread Eagle: Whitbread/Chesters house once popular with bikers. Demolished in spite of public protest to make way for Lidl store. King William IV: John Smiths house which offered Bed and Breakfast accommodation, close to Park Parade. Opposite the… Red Lion, one time Bass house briefly known as the Toad and Tulip, they were both demolished to make way for the St. Petersfield development.
Till the continuous wilderness period, Ashton was a great place for young and old drinkers to let their hair down. There was – and still is, though to a lesser extent today – a diverse number of night spots and traditional pubs. In its heyday, most of the town’s nightly activity was focussed on Stamford Street with Old Street a good second.
The Friendship: vacant at present, the Robinson’s house was also home to Schofield’s Brewery till the 1920s. It was a popular locals pub which, if reopened today, would have potential to do food and real ale.
For our journey, we leave our taxi at St. Michael’s Square and wander down Stamford Street. The Cavern: Once one of the busiest starting off bars of its day, as the name suggests the theme of the place was an underground cave type expedience, since the bar had a revamp and name change to The Underground it seamed to lose its character and appeal. The bar is now called Olivers catering more for the daytime cheap drinks market.
The Globe/The Witchwood: lovers of rock music or tribute bands, this place needs little introduction. The Witchwood remains a popular pub for lovers of the above musical genres, and real ale. Foresters’ Call: popular locals’ pub with character, real ale and televised sports coverage.
The Loose Moose: previously The Stamford, a Whitbread/Chesters pub, before becoming a fun pub aimed at young adults in 1993. Now a wedding shop.
Star Inn: former Boddingtons pub once a popular watering hole for Tameside Theatre, ABC Empire and the Birdcage. Ashton Palais/Birdcage/Wheels: just off rather than on Old Street itself, the Ashton Palais was a popular haunt for live bands in the 1960s. Some scenes from the film version of Billy Liar were shot there. By the mid to late 1970s, it became a roller skating rink with roller disco and was demolished in 1985.
The Beach: formerly Ashton’s branch of Lloyd’s Bank prior to Lloyds TSB merger in 1998. Club Denial: above a motorcycle shop, it was formerly a billiard hall and social club, its original purpose since the 1930s when the whole ground floor unit was occupied by Montague Burton’s shop till 1967.
Majestic/Gaumont/ODEON/Metro Cinema: though not a night club nor pub, the Odeon and Metro had a stage for live acts. As the Metro, the early 1980s saw Fat Larry’s Band and Bryan Adams hold a gig there. Today, it lies empty, having ceased as a cinema in 2003, with the Slotworld amusement arcade closing late last year.
Yates’ Wine Lodge/Doctor Browns/Legends: before becoming part of the Yates’ Wine Lodge chain, it was known as The Wheatsheaf. It was a Yates’ till 1998 when it became Doctor Browns, a moniker it bore till around 2006
4
Shepherd’s Call: now subdivided into two shop units. The Britannia: after closing in the 1970s, along with the Shepherd’s Call, it became an amusement arcade. Now vacant. The Pitt and Nelson/The Bedroom: once a sprawling two floor Tetley pub, its corner position was popular with daytime and night time drinkers alike. In 2001, an ill thought out conversion to The Bedroom (as an attempt to pitch the pub to late teens and twenty somethings) failed. It has been subdivided into shop units. Ye Olde Vaults: latterly known as Chambers and at one time, one of Ashton’s oldest pubs. Closed since 2008. The Highland Laddie/Camel: former Boddingtons pub converted, as Camel, into soulless drinking bar. Now closed.
Irish National Institute: opposite the Prince of Orange, a 1960s building noted for live entertainment. Sadly now victim to the times closed in 2013 ans stands empty. The Ladysmith: in the last half decade, The Ladysmith has had more pub managers and reinventions than anyone cares to mention. After a flirtation as a LGBT friendly pub, it has now reverted back to a traditional pub near the station with karaoke and live televised sport. Barcentro/The Old Fire Station/The Engine Room: a Smith and Jones managed pub which has ‘matured’ to attract a more family friendly clientele with real ales as well as food. Once popular with young people whilst Barcentro. Fire station till 1963, hence name. Was prior to Barcentro era Ferguson’s Restaurant.
The Ash Tree: Tameside’s first Wetherspoons house, opening in 1995. Formerly the Main Street Shopping Centre (1988 – The Old Dog/Chester Moonshines/The Player: formerly The 1994) which was prior to then, Harbenware pan shop and Old Dog, it became The Player in 2002 after being known the Queen’s Cinema. as Chester Moonshines. Further space was gained after The Buck and Hawthorn: once a solid Robinson’s house extension into the Revolution Vodka Bar. which four different rooms, including an intimate committee room. Closed around 2006, now offices. Boogie Wonderland/Mint: as Boogie Wonderland in the mid 1990s, it was a 1970s theme pub. The Queen Inn: former Marston’s house, recently reopened. Also had a brief spell in 2010 as a LGBT friendly pub. The Angel: one of Ashton’s oldest pubs. The mosaic sign dates from previous ownership as a Shaws (Dukinfield) The Theatre and Concert Tavern: closed 1973, the Tetley brewery house. It has been a John Smiths house since its house was originally going to be Ashton’s town hall. Ashton’s takeover of the Park Road brewery in 1941. Swimming Baths now stands on the site. The Clarence/Time Zone: one time Bass house, popular The Beau Geste: fine example of modernist pub design in with older drinkers. Ashton, opened in 1967 by Bents Gartside brewery and Queen’s Arms/Bar 15: as former name, its mosaic Queen’s included separate off-licence unit. Popular with over 50s with regular live entertainment. Now with live music on in Arms sign on the ground floor windows were prominent. afternoons. Molly Malone’s: Irish theme pub popular in the 1990s for having a single admission price and enabling customers to The Ashton: moved from previous site to accommodate have as many drinks as they desired. Also the birthplace of today’s Ladysmith Shopping Centre in 1967. Closed in 1993 with The Arcades Shopping Centre in its place. PG Tips before Brooke Bond went on to bigger and better things. The Bowling Green: Ashton’s oldest pub in continuous licence. The Station: now a rock pub after being known for its real ale and acoustic nights. Formerly owned by John Hesketh The Tontine: closed for the last 3 years, popular house once and Sylvia Wood who restored the pub in 1984, before taking control of and refurbishing Stalybridge Station Buffet offered Vaux ales. Bar. The Albion: former Robinson’s house, demolished to make The Caledonia: pleasing quiet locals pub with well served way for the Albion Way (Ashton Northern Bypass). Robinson’s ales and good food. Excellent for a quiet drink Ye Olde Barn: for our last entry, the Ye Olde Barn was located whilst not being too far from the shopping centre. behind The Clarence/Time Zone. It was renamed Bex in 2001 George and Dragon: once a popular pub which took up before closing a year after. It is now a Chinese restaurant. the corner of Bow Street and part of Old Street. Demolished Any More Honourable Mentions? in the late 1960s and replaced by shops and a subterranean successor known as The Cavern. Still open in subterranean guise though geared towards cost conscious Did you spend many a Friday or Saturday night at the venues stated herein? Any memories of the joys of a night out in drinkers. Ashton? Feel free to let us know. Other pubs or clubs? Why not add to the list. The Prince of Orange: believe me, no trip to Ashton is complete without a pint in this multi-roomed hostelry, thanks to their karaoke nights and live acts. St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

Today, Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine's Day, albeit on July 6th and July 30th, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Dom’s Diary A very happy new year to you all, it was great to see the pubs and clubs packed out over the festive period let's hope the tide is turning for our industry, Of course New year is a fresh start for us all and what better way to start a new year than making a New Year’s resolution, mine is to loose a few pounds (and I don't mean money). From now on I am not going to worry about what I eat between Christmas and the New Year, I am going to worry about what I eat between new year and Christmas, there is only me and my wife and we bought enough food to feed Africa. And here is another New Years tradition, The Song "should auld acquaintance be forgot” That is Unless the pregnancy test comes back positive. On Christmas Eve Paddy Mick & Sean all arrive at the pearly gates, St peter said to them sorry boys you can't come in we are closed and its Christmas Eve, Paddy said could you not show us some compassion with it being Christmas, So St Peter said Ok If any of you have anything on your person that resembles Christmas I will let you in Heaven. Sean took out of his pocket a set of keys and started to rattle them St Peter said what's that got to do with Christmas Sean said it resembles jingle bells and St. Peter lets him in heaven, next up was Mick who produced his lighter, St Peter said what's that got to do with Christmas Mick said it symbolising a Christmas candle and St Peter lets him in heaven, Finally came Paddy who took from his pocket a pair of knickers, St peter said to him what have they got to do with Christmas and paddy says, they are carols-lol See Ya Dom J

Hello readers! Now where were we before being rudely interrupted by the Christmas holidays? oh yes, 1977 diving over bonnets Starsky and Hutch Style. This was a wonderful era you may well recall. Times were a-changing, music was changing, TV was entertaining! We had white dog poo (what ever happened to that?) and i was allowed out unsupervised while having a healthy eye kept on me by family, friends and neighbours. We were safe! But then a new scene transcended upon us.. Punk, anarchy, and gobbing! Yes, it was the time for music to introduce The Sex Pistols. Now this to me was all very strange. I was used to melodic music, disco music such as Abba and David Essex etc. But this new music was raucous, energetic and even a little 'anarchic'. Not really my cuppa but this was the time for 'angry music' Shortly after the emergence of the Sex Pistols followed an array of angry young men and their bands. The Jam, Sham 69 and Joe Strummers The Clash. All these bands delivering confrontational music to a new era of youth. This was an odd time that included strikes, political rallys and a lot more gobbing. It wasn't my era and it certainly wasn't my taste, however this music delivered a new culture of 'bad boys' and even a little patriotism that we probably hadn't seen since 1945. Punk has since long gone, or so I thought until I wondered into the Q inn on a recent Sunday afternoon.. The Q inn is of course a nice quiet real ale drinkers pub situated down market street (Stalybridge) and is making a pretty good impact with customers and live music fans. One of the hardened fans of the Q is Jack Whitham. Jack himself is a passionate music fan and also an aspiring song writer. Jack recently launched and hosts a Sunday afternoon 'Sunday jam' that currently happens fortnightly. I walked in expecting to hear some 'diddly diddly' music with a little poetry thrown in. To my surprise and astonishment, I was met with The Thirtina's. Now I am unsure how they would tag themselves this 4 piece female led band, but my ears told me that I was now back in 1977 and i needed to start gobbing! Yes, a punk band. Very raunchy music with some awesome guitar riffs going on and some angry sounding vocals delivered by a rather attractive lady on guitar. It didn't make sense, my eyes were seeing a what looked like a country band but my ears were 'pogo-ing' They were a great band and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. I am sure they will make a return to one of these Sunday jams. So, a big thank you to Jack for organising these live music events. call in, maybe take your guitar and give the Q a tune! Now if you are a fan of slide guitar and/or Ry Cooder you may want to check out The Toads. This is a band fronted by the legendary John Buckle. I caught these guys at The Stone Jugg recently. Now I only popped in to blag a free pint of Stuart (didn't work!) and ended up staying for sometime listening to this awesome band. Now there's only 3 of them but god they make some sounds! John is on guitar, electric mandolin, acoustic, the spoons (ok maybe not spoons but he played just about every stringed gadget possible), a young talented whippersnapper on bass and a seasoned drummer with the most minimal of kits yet did such great things with it. All very talented musicians. They had what I can only describe as a 'deep south' feel going on, delivering classic tunes with this southern feel and southern drawl. John himself definatley looks the part and may possibly actually live in a swamp somewhere. Great band, go and check them out! While I was at the Jugg incidentally, Stuart informed me of 'bumps in the night' happening upstairs. Now you'd be excused for thinking this has something to do with him and his other half but it hasn't. they've got visitors from beyond the grave it would appear. Ghostly shenanigans and footsteps in the night (cue all the spirit gags) It is rumoured that the Jugg used to be a prison of some sorts. The name itself would suggest this I think? Anyway, I am hoping to assist Stuart in some kind of ghost hunting vigil and hope to offer our findings in my next article. Don't forget if you are a venue or a band, drop me a line and let me know what's occurring. I would be happy to visit your gig and offer a review. Get in touch! Catch you soon peeps! Now where's my Proton pack... Kevin Orchard twitter: @kevorchard

emember StalyVegas ? Remember walking out for a drink on any night and finding some decent live entertainment on too ? Well if you do then the chances are you will have already noticed a couple of guys by the name of Danny and Gary plying their trade in pretty much any and every pub corner or stage that existed over those purple patch years. Being one of those that used to go to The Bridge Inn on a Tuesday night to watch Halo or to Sharkeys on a Sunday to take in Damian Young, I was in fact taken by surprise when listening to how Danny and Gary evolved into what they are today; 'The Live Lounge duo'. The journey starts with a young Gary Kirk, picking up the guitar at the age of 12 it wasn't long before Gary had decided that the only way to earn a living would be with his trusty guitar by his side. Studying for a National Diploma in music Gary was already rubbing shoulders with many local talented musicians. Gary recalls seeing the in vogue mullet hairstyle and a certain Mr Carlo Sax regularly teaching the sax students all things Gerry Rafferty; one of his most vivid memories he tells me ! By the age of 17 Gary was beginning to get noticed, taking regular paid gigs and approached by a certain Mr Dave Brace to form a very successful Jazz duo. Touring the country Gary and Dave played in too many restaurants to mention including the occasional trip across the water to play in France. Not one to rest on his laurels Gary also took up bass guitar to form part of the Indie band 'CLEON'. Describing this as a great experience Gary tells us ''the sales were there but as with most new bands the lack of understanding of the 'music trade' ''would ultimately mean CLEON were destined not to make it. In an age before Facebook and Youtube it's testament to Gary's standing within the industry to see him, at the age of 24, get head hunted by renowned Jazz singer Steve Brady forming a successful touring partnership across the UK, France and Germany and many cruise liners that lasted over 3 and half years. You may think as I did, ''well what's with all that Jazz!'' for Gary it's simply a case of spending time with great jazz guitarist Mike Walker and an introduction to the E7 sharp 9 chord. From that day on a realisation hit Gary that there was so much more to be had from his trusty 6 string. Watch Gary up at the Dog and Partridge on Mottram Road and many lesser guitarist will ask 'have you altered the tuning and took it down a step' but no its just Gary putting in those chords you very really hear. Well, what next ? The vibrant StalyVegas music scene and a novel idea by Cheers very own ' Kevin Orchard' would see would be singing stars take their place alongside a full band aka Rockyoke. Often copied but never bettered Rockyoke would run for over six and a half years with Gary taking his place on guitar. Outliving many of the bars they performed in such as Pavillion and Rififi the Rockyoke concept still lives on with the guys performing a 'one-off' reunion gig at The Bridge Inn December 2013. (look out for more on Rocky-Oke in a future Spotlight column). Making the most of the ongoing demand for live music Gary continued to ply his trade with tried and trusted musicians including Andy Elly and Carl Fell 'Fudd'. It was at a gig down at The Victoria in Dukinfield that a young Danny Lee approached Gary for guitar lesson and a whole new story began to unfold. After a somewhat brief six to eight months guitar tuition Danny was ready to fill the void left by an overworked and Hong Kong commuting Andrew Elly. Being thrown in at the deep end it was the sheer fact of having to learn so many songs in such little time that made Danny the player he now is. Put him alongside Gary and it's difficult to see who's the guitar teacher and who's the student. Maybe it was Danny's time at The Fox Tavern DJ'ing at the age of 13 which really paid off! By 2011 Gary and Danny were regularly gigging as a very talented fully live acoustic duo and with the Rockyoke scene taking a bit of a break it was time for a big decision, would Gary go back to work on the cruises or was it time to rebrand and take the duo to the next level. Enter the Live Lounge Duo. Using all their expertise to market the duo as a fully acoustic 'unplugged' duo The Live Lounge Duo carried to build on all the experience from duo'ing as Danny and Gary. Having upwards of 200 songs to choose from and such an inoffensive style to suit those sing along numbers, The Live Lounge Duo would become very sought after. Many top line gigs continued to flood in including 'The Pride of Tameside Awards 2013' and 'Party in the Park 2012' – supporting Bucks Fizz , if you need any more help to make your mind up about the quality of this great duo then go and take a look at them on Friday nights up at The Dog and Partridge on Mottram Road. Constantly evolving they offer their Jukebox night which allows punters to request any song to be played back almost instantly on guitar and vocals... no backing tracks here my friends!. Understanding their own brand Danny and Gary realised the kind of music they played would suit all aspect of any couples big wedding day and began to market themselves as such. Tailoring a full package which could see the guys 'bring in the bride' to their favourite song at Church, guitars on arrival at the meal, the couples' wedding song and the full party songs throughout the night, the guys were definitely onto a winner and so was the Bride and Groom. So now it's to my big decision, if I have any say in it ? Can we have these guys on at my wedding Vicky? ! And if you don't do weddings then check these guys out at your local music venue, I can assure you won't be disappointed . The Dog and Partridge – Mottram Road Stalybridge, Friday 7th, 14th and 21st Feb The Millpond Stalybridge – Sunday 16th Feb – 5pm The Stone Jug Stalybridge – Sunday 9th March- 6pm
