Imaginary Folklore Recreating Landscape
Master Thesis of Architecture Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Tutors: Kathrin Aste, Michael Hansmeyer, Wolfgang Tschapeller 2016
Geographical position and abundance of forests have determined the spread of wood as the main building material of Lithuania in 20th century. Therefore, Lithuania holds a rich collection of woodenware and reminiscences of wooden architecture with the outstanding ornamentation. Due to industrialization and standardized building products, material’s innate characteristics and inherent heterogeneity remain largely neglected and unexplored. Assembly lines caused a world made of parts, framing the imagination to think about the objects as assemblies of discrete parts with distinct functions. But there are no homogenous material assemblies in nature. We enter an age of digital fabrication, with compound wood materials allowing for reliable properties and milling technology enabling complete manipulation of solid wood. The project’s design is based on the complex wood anatomy and material investigation, combining various scales and parts of wood, which enabled to discover new unseen forms out of wood. The goal of the project is to rediscover the wooden architecture and to introduce design parameters proposing etnographic environment that speaks truly of its birthplace and the future.

As the contribution to the digital images of my master thesis, I produced physical models in 3 different scales: landscape (1:500), vessel (1:100) and material. The models were built using CNC milling machine and 3d printer. For the experimental material models, I used epoxy resin, various wood particles, and charred wood. For the anatomic analysis, I produced macro pictures of wood as a reference for the form and shape interpretation.

Inverted Baroque Academical Project Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Tutor: Kathrin Aste 2015 My interest in nature-based forms and shapes started by working on this project. “Inverted Baroque is an interpretation of the baroque illusionism, representing the atmosphere of -fata morgana- a phenomenon of nature. I used point clouds as a method of pointilism, to achieve a different substance of the components, which I chose as exotic animals, representing the power of baroque. When the animal shaped pointcloud flies away, inside organs of the animals appear. This concept allowed me to discover the hidden reality and to see exotic spaces that were invisible before. Each intervention is an illusionary composition of exotic animals, which is captured still, but in virtual reality- constantly changing. The intervention sites are inspired by the baroque formal garden- dominating long distance alleys, bosquet gardens and the longest orangery in Europe. Different intervention places are presented as the postcards from the famous sights of Schonbrunn park in Vienna. I focused on the intervention in orangery, which originally served also as a winter garden used for court festivities. Whereas, animal inside organs become architectonic, ready to held new festivities in the orangery and enjoy the exotic being. The viewer is enabled to enter the interior of the animal body and look throught the exotic reality. This is an example of inverted baroque.

Lichens Symbiotic Structures
Research Project 2017- ongoing
Lichens are the symbiotic organisms between fungi and algae, which perform as the miniature ecosystems. Colonies of lichens are spectacular in appearance, dominating the surface of visual landscape by different species scattered together. Particularly interesting I find their form diversity and metamorphosis as well as multiplication and adaption to almost any surface and even the most extreme environments. Goal of this multi-disciplinary project is to study the variety of lichen forms and introduce it’s symbiotic qualities to architectural design. During the process of research I will work on parallels between natural and digital, questioning new ideas and work possibilities influenced by digital media. What kind of drawing tools- software can simulate nature‘s complexity? How to innovate nature‘s data in architecture? How can we design such diverse and intricate forms? How to fabricate the symbiotic material compositions?

Macrolands Sci-fi Story
Personal Project 2017
Proloque In the macrolands, even the smallest elements totally depend on the environment. The cities of lichens are not an exception. Diverse and sometimes extreme climatic conditions determine their forms of growth and unique natural shapes of the urban pattern. Main citizens are the algae and fungi, but occasionally other microorganisms can be spotted too. The relationship between fungi and algae, their commitment to one another and absolute reflection and exchange with the context they inhabit is caused by the power of symbiosis. Its invisible talent keeps the balance between the natural and man-made world. If you are willing to witness its magic, you are in the right place. This transparent, informal beauty of symbiosis is known since romanticism, but today not everyone is able to sense it. Therefore, we invite You to experience an ordinary day in all 5 macrolands and discover sympathies and similarities to yourself. Note those same characteristics can be applied to every living thing; the world is multidisciplinary.
