ASOS FASHION UP Arriving in the App Store 3 September
WELCOME major upside to the end of summer – you’ve got to be glass half full about these things – is the arrival of A/W’12 fashion. Granted, navigating all the new-season trends can be a tricky business – do you dip into tomboy, play with Oriental, or go head-to-toe baroque? But why choose? Fashion should be all about experimenting, mixing it up and, most importantly, having fun. We know that’s the way you roll, so we’ve got masses of A/W’12 fashion eye candy to inspire you in this month’s issue. From the hot ticket pieces that will give your wardrobe an instant now-over, to autumn’s most-wanted accessories [they’re all about ultra-wide, waist-cinching belts, seriously OTT decorative jewellery and anything-but-plain bags, FYI]. Like I said – fun! Someone who knows a thing or two about mixing-it-up style is cover star Juno Temple [p.62]. This is the actress who wowed an Oscar night party in a $17 thrift shop find, and is equally happy doing dressed-down grunge [with designer lingerie underneath] one day and that pretty/girlie Miu Miu thing the next. Another issue highlight is our Nail Bar [p.98] – you told us that you are obsessed with your nails so this page is dedicated to all that is new and hot. As always we want to hear from you – tweet us your nail creations and we’ll feature the best. Also in this month’s mix – Hollywood hot property Cody Horn talks us through her sexy/cool style [p.12], the insider guide to what the fash pack really do at London Fashion Week [p.48 – it’s not all parties and air-kissing, you know] and the lowdown on the new beauty tribes [p.95] – which one are you in? Enjoy!

How long have you been a photographer? ‘Since I was 11 when I was given my first camera by a neighbour.’ Inspired by ‘Film, music and people on the street.’ Most overused word ‘Totally’ [in a Scottish accent]. Dream shoot location ‘Top of the Pops studio circa 1976.’ Fave film ‘Carrie, it’s a classic horror. Everyone looks great.’ Best thing about your career ‘Doing something I love and creating images that people may stick on bedroom walls.’
Fave place in the world ‘Parents’ backyard in California.’ Fave accessory ‘Scarves. It’ll be 100 degrees and I’ll still have a scarf on.’ Person you’d like to work with ‘300 director Zack Snyder.’ Fave drink ‘Chai tea.’ Most overused phrase ‘Tartlette. A tartlette’s a girl who acts like she’s dumb. The male versions are Martlettes.’ Beauty essential ‘Oleo Relax shampoo by Kérastase.’
Top three dinner party guests ‘My wife, Mara, she’s the best. Michael Jackson, growing up, he was everything. And Tim Burton – I’ve a billion questions about his Batman movies.’ Hoarder of ‘Batiste Dry Shampoo. I stock up when I find it.’ Superpower would be ‘Being able to fly over L.A. traffic.’ Tip for a bad hair day ‘Learn a chic, quick way to put your hair up in a bun knot or pony.’ Dream client ‘Cate Blanchett, she’s always gorgeous.’

CODY’s STYLE
Can you describe your style? ‘Rainy day warrior. In London, wearing my studded Steve Madden boots, jeans and a leather jacket, I said to my friend, “A pair of boots on a rainy day, that’s my home.”’ We loved your red leather Marios Schwab dress at the Young Hollywood Awards… ‘It was amazing and comfortable with this wide skirt and structural top. It made me feel small but strong, great at my height [5ft 10”].’ What influences your look? ‘Travel, New York, music – I was in a band and love going to concerts. I just saw The Kills and The Dead Weather.’ Has your haircut changed how you dress? ‘I luckily had that long “Gisele” hair, but after modelling for years I was ready to change. I like oversized shirts, but with short hair I’m a bit androgynous, so now I play more with make-up and dress more femininely. It’s fun.’
Has modelling influenced your style? ‘Yeah, being around clothes and stylists is inspiring, and photographers’ assistants always have something wild going on.’ Was Magic Mike [the summer movie hit about male strippers] fun to make? ‘The make-up department had a hilarious time, they had to groom the guys in ways I’m not going into! [Co-star] Channing Tatum was amazing. We worked out scenes together and it turned into a love story.’ Unlike your next film, End Of Watch [an intense cop movie with Jake Gyllenhaal]… ‘Totally. For pre-production we spent time with the police in areas like Compton in L.A. America Ferrera plays my partner, and we wanted to feel like cops so we trained every morning – if call time was 5am, we hit the gym at 3am. My character’s pretty hardened.’ End Of Watch is out on 23 November

Kristen Stewart: caught in the middle
If you want a head start on the new season, it’s time for a bit of navel gazing – literally. Seen on the catwalk at McQ by Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent and Kenzo, a wide, waist-cinching belt gives a focal point to your silhouette and is the easiest route into A/W’12’s glamourous-yet-tough vibe. Make a statement by going as wide as you dare – and the more gold hardware the better. Breathe in!

What’s your most embarrassing moment? ‘I farted really loudly in a taxi once. I thought the driver would be polite and ignore it, but he burst out laughing.’ What was the last band you saw live? ‘The Stone Roses at Heaton Park. It was incredible, it felt like a moment in history.’ Which character do you most relate to? ‘Andrea in Jacqueline Wilson’s [kids’ book] The Suitcase Kid. She was self-conscious and had a mum who was really outgoing.’ Who would you most like to be trapped in a lift with? ‘Tom Hardy. I love him in the film Bronson. He’s incredible.’ What would you do if you weren’t famous for a day? ‘I’d shave off my hair and get arrested for something like shoplifting Pop-Tarts.’ Now Is Good is out on 21 September

Tell us about your character in your new film, Now Is Good… ‘I play Zoe, Tessa’s [Dakota Fanning] best friend. I was in floods of tears when I read the script. It was beautiful, but heartbreaking too.’ How was it working with Dakota Fanning? ‘I didn’t get a peek at any of her designer wardrobe, but she was a lot of fun and just the most professional person.’ What’s been your red carpet highlight? ‘Venice Film Festival. I was wearing a beautiful Burberry gown and amazing jewellery they lent me. I felt like a princess.’ What’s your most overused word? ‘I’ve been living in Manchester for two years so I’ve started saying “buzzin’” a lot.’ What was the last thing you listened to on your iPod? ‘I downloaded a Nina Simone album this morning – my music tastes are really varied. Sometimes I listen to reggae and then I’ll just listen to ’80s music. I’m an old soul.’ Who is your secret crush? ‘Arnold Schwarzenegger. I was a fan of his films growing up. I love him, in a weird way.’

THE EX-SKINS ACTRESS DISHES ON CO-STAR DAKOTA FANNING AND RED CARPET DRESSING
Whether it’s the Downton effect – all that traipsing over the country estate while still looking fab – or that back-to-school feeling [conkers, anyone?], fashion is looking to the natural world. Take tips from Christopher Bailey’s Town and Field collection for Burberry Prorsum, featuring owl prints and a palette of chestnut, bark and moss, or über-American label Ralph Lauren, which came over all stately home-like with tweeds and corduroys. Even McQ by Alexander McQueen shook off its punk princess look in favour of autumnal leaf prints that wound their way around dresses and skirts. For an easy update, look for heritage fabrics in skaters, bombers and cigarette trousers. Now all you need is a pile of leaves to kick through…

Whether brocade trousers, or jewel-encrusted dresses, decorative pieces are wardrobe wonders – and now your hair can look just as fancy. For A/W’12, Dolce & Gabbana hairstylist Guido Palau added heavily beaded, baroque-inspired hairbands to slick centre-parted hair to match the ornate doorknocker earrings and statement necklaces. At Rodarte, cosmic star pins were scattered randomly, as if in the night sky, in ethereal, cloud-like faux bobs. Meanwhile, ponytails sculpted into arcs were crowned with chandelier-style diamanté brooches at Alexis Mabille’s couture show. Elegant floral and bird print trousers are your new workwear cornerstone. Make Monday morning impact with a clashing geo print jacket, styled with an easy grey marl T-shirt.

- MONDAY ‘I never plan my outfits – I prefer a more thrown together look. Today, I’ve gone for something quick and easy, as I have to be in the office early for the weekly board meeting. My leather pencil skirt hits a big A/W’12 trend and its jersey panels mean it’s comfortable for sitting at my desk. The grey ribbed jumper and flat loafers make it more casual. I’ve styled my hair into a French roll and quiff for a ’50s feel to match my glasses. It took me a year to find the perfect retro frames.’ JUMPER: ASOS; SKIRT: ASOS; LOAFERS: RUSSELL & BROMLEY; BAG: VINTAGE; JACKET [HELD]: GAP; WATCH: UNIFORM WARES; GLASSES: SPITALFIELDS MARKET; LIPSTICK: PINK NOUVEAU BY M.A.C
PA Gemma Ashdown, 29, shows how to add vintage flair to your working wardrobe I’m a vintage chameleon,’ says Gemma, a PA to the CEOs of communications agency Exposure. ‘My style icon Erykah Badu calls it “analogue girl in a digital world” which sums it up perfectly.’ Gemma manages her bosses diaries and helps with the day-to-day running of the agency. ‘I meet a lot of influential people so I’m always smart and presentable, but I still want to express my personality,’ she says. She does this by changing her hairstyle or making sure there’s a unique piece in her outfit. ‘I’m inspired by music and film – if I hear Beyoncé in the morning, I’ll do my hair big and curly, and the film Moonrise Kingdom inspired me to wear more vintage,’ she says. Individuality is important to Gemma. ‘I shop in small boutiques on holiday so there’s less risk of wearing the same thing as someone else,’ she says. As a result her wardrobe is packed with vintage pieces discovered in New York and Europe, as well as basics from Cos and H&M that she mixes in to keep her style modern.
-TUESDAY ‘I manage the diaries and meetings for the CEOs so I’m at my desk a lot planning. Basics like a white T-shirt and black cigarette trousers are the perfect backdrop to vintage. I love the neckline of this coat, which I found in New York – its oversized shape makes it a perfect cross-season cover up. As I won’t be running around much, I’ve worn vintage peep-toe heels to show off my red nail varnish. It’s my go-to colour as it matches everything.’

‘There are always PR events or launches to attend – tonight I’m going to a Martini launch at a West End bar. I love the details of these trousers – the high waist, buttons, and the mint tweed. They’re boyish but the colour lifts them into girlier territory, which I’ve emphasised with red lipstick. It’s an easy update to go from work to evening. I’ve kept the look unfussy with a simple T-shirt, grey patent peep-toes and a low ponytail. I’ll add my leather jacket when it gets chilly later.’
‘I’ve had this top for years but winter florals are a big catwalk trend so I’ve dug it out and tucked it into my high-waisted shorts. Shorts are my wardrobe staple. With dark opaque tights and brogues they’re office appropriate, but I can add heels at the end of the day and I’m ready for dancing with my friends. I’ve added an individual twist with my basket bag. I like something in my outfit to feel a little bit out of place.’ TOP: TOPSHOP; SHORTS: MINE; BROGUES: RUSSELL & BROMLEY; BAG: VINTAGE; WATCH: AS BEFORE; TIGHTS: M&S

- THURSDAY ‘Our reception doubles as an exhibition space and I organise the artists who exhibit. Each month we host a private viewing so I spend most of the day hanging artwork. My black shift is practical for a day moving heavy frames, but its sheer details make it evening worthy because I’m helping out in the bar later on. I like the idea of a plain dress with a statement necklace – it’s a talking point and an easy update to add at the last minute. Low-heeled boots provide a finishing touch – they’re comfy enough for a full day of running around.’ DRESS: H&M; NECKLACE: BENT; BAG: TOPSHOP; WATCH: AS BEFORE; BOOTS: CHIE MIHARA; TIGHTS: M&S

NAILING IT
JO FUERTESKNIGHT
‘I haven’t seen my real nails in over a decade because they’re always painted. Other girls can’t go out without make-up but I feel disgusting if I don’t have nice nails. Now I’ve moved to Hackney – the home of the cheap manicure – I’ve started getting them done professionally. I recently befriended [nail artist] Sophy Robson – she’s amazing at doing party manicures. I got stiletto nails with plaster of Paris swirls all over them. Anything she puts out is gold.’
Age 25 Occupation Editor at Vice music site Noisey and presenter of online video series Girl Eats Food. Why we love her Jo’s oddball recipes – from mint Aero rack of lamb to English breakfast cupcakes – on Vice’s Girl Eats Food series demonstrate that you can have fun with fashion, wearing novelty tees and colourful talons, while getting serious in the kitchen.
SCRUNCHIES ‘I don’t care about that episode of Sex and the City [when Carrie disses on scrunchies], I’m bringing them back. There’s a place called Paks in Dalston and they’ve got stacks of them. Whenever anyone asks where I get mine from, I just say it’s a secret. They’re £4 in American Apparel. I get mine for 75p, although they do fall apart every week.’
‘I don’t care about that episode of Sex and the City – I’m bringing scrunchies back’ SPICE UP YOUR LIFE ‘We had a house party at the Vice executive editor’s house and because I’m editor of the music site they wanted me to put on my iPod. I had a playlist with Jordan Knight, Backstreet Boys and SisQo. I don’t think everyone was impressed but this is all classic pop! I have the full Spice Girls back catalogue too.’

AIR MAXED OUT ‘I’m always in trainers, I’ve got an obscene number. I look like a newborn giraffe in heels. I like them on other girls but they don’t work on me. My trainers are all under my bed and piled up in my wardrobe. The most recent are a pair of black Nike Air Max, which in my head is a really smart shoe, but Vans are my favourite. Once you get into it, you just keep going.’ ASOS.COM

What do you do at LFW? ‘Fashion week is busy, hot, exciting and frightening all in one. Which show are you most excited about? ‘Corrie Nielsen is my designer to watch in London – I love seeing what she’s done for the season.’
Best A/W’12 trends ‘There was a strong Russian vibe to a lot of the collections, as well as ’50s influences and long leather gloves.’
How are you doing A/W’12? ‘Definitely the ladylike look – it’s totally my style. Lots of pencil skirts and fluffy jumpers!’
What will you wear for LFW? ‘I’m planning on wearing a new pair of Manolos which I am in love with. They look like little chilli people. I also think I’ll wear a new coat covered in wonderful embellishments, which I picked up on my travels in Vietnam. I love customising my jeans, so I’m sure I’ll wear a pair of them too. And I can’t leave home without my sunglasses and Birkin bag.’

What do you do at LFW? ‘As a new face, fashion week is a great opportunity to walk in as many shows as possible, in order to get known in the industry. My schedule is intense, with castings and fittings taking place late into the night before a show. ‘Depending on what you’re wearing, the few seconds before you step onto the catwalk are either the most exciting or the most terrifying. There are always lots of famous people in the front row, but I can never see them because of all the lights and camera flashes.’
‘The few seconds before walking out for a show are either the most exciting or the most terrifying’ Codie Young
Best A/W’12 trends ‘Bright colours dominated the runways. I wouldn’t recommend going all-out like they do in the shows, but a nice big pop of colour looks great.’
Survival tip ‘Sleep when you can and practise walking in heels. It gets easier with experience, but there’s always a show where the shoes are terrible to walk in and there’s not much you can do but suck it up and make it work.’
What will you wear for LFW? ‘My casting clothes are skinny jeans, a vest top and heels, which I carry in my bag to change into. The designers have to be able to see your figure and how you walk. If I have shows or fittings, I can wear baggier clothes. I’ve never been that into make-up or getting my hair done, so that’s my least favourite part. It’s amazing getting to wear the beautiful gowns, like the Giles one I wore last season.’
Which show are you most excited about? ‘I love London – there’s a great sense of humour. Last season at LFW I walked for Erdem, Giles, Vivienne Westwood, Clements Ribeiro, Temperley London, Paul Smith and Kinder Aggugini. I’m not sure who I’m walking for this season, but I’m looking forward to Marc Jacobs in New York.’

My days are busy from start to finish, with up to 12 shows per day and parties to go to each evening. But a great show like Meadham Kirchhoff totally lifts your spirits when you’re flagging.’

How are you doing A/W’12? ‘I’m embracing the statement sweater, head-to-toe prints and all the velvet that’s around. Plus I’ve updated last season’s coats with a waist-cinching belt.’
Survival tip ‘Wear in your new shoes a fortnight before so they’re comfortable to be in all day. Don’t bother with a long, heavy coat or too many layers as you’re inside most of the time and will just end up lugging stuff around. Keep lots of snacks in your handbag… chocolate-coated cereal bars are perfect for an energy boost on the go. What do you do at LFW? ‘My role is to identify the key trends and new designers for ASOS. I’m looking for brands with a unique offering, good quality and a real identity. ‘As a company, we support young designers and LFW is the best place to find the hottest new talent. We buy a lot of brands – House of Holland, Jonathan Saunders, J.W. We’re always looking to the future and championing new talent.’

How are you doing A/W’12? ‘I love the androgynous look. My style is casual and boyish with clean lines, so I’m dipping into the leather trend in an oxblood leather skirt with a big boyfriend jumper.’
Best A/W’12 trends ‘Texture, technical fabrics and graphic prints. I love the new military, which is smarter and androgynous. Oxblood is a great, strong colour and a brilliant update for A/W’12. And leather, on everything from jackets and skirts to tops and trousers.’
What will you wear for LFW? ‘I’ll try and wear ASOS products or things that we stock and this season is all about leather – it’s practical for cooler weather and massively on-trend. The ASOS Revive leather trousers are amazing with a big knitted jumper, which means I don’t have to carry a coat. There are also some leather dungarees that I’ll wear with a crisp white shirt and black pointy heels. Jonathan Saunders is one of my favourite designers, so his burgundy padded skirt with matching printed shirt will look cool. Finally, I have my eye on a check A-line skirt with a J.W. What do you do at LFW? ‘Skin is as important to a catwalk show as hair and make-up. As global ambassador for St. Tropez, I ensure that the models’ skin looks as great as the collection. ‘We meet up with the designer three months before the show to talk inspiration. Sometimes we use existing products and sometimes we create something new for the show. We use Wash Off Instant Glow Lotion to even out the skin tone and Skin Illuminator for a defined finish. Finally, we add extra illuminator to models’ legs so the light catches their skin as they walk. ‘When I’m not at shows I’m giving models facials – I do 15-20 during the week. Fashion week wreaks havoc on models’ skin, so it’s important they sort it out before heading off to Milan and Paris.’

Meet the London duo reinventing the pop wheel for a fresh take on the new season. Karmel Mandrick joins them for a stroll in the park
P H O T O G R A P H Y: M A R K K E A N
rip-hop. Glitch pop. R&B. Two-step. Blogs and glossies alike have attempted to label the distinctive sound of esoteric boy-girl duo AlunaGeorge. But it’s not actua lly that easy to pigeonhole the pair, thanks to Aluna Francis’ dexterous dance moves and hopscotch-jumping vocals, merged with George Reid’s ice-cool production of blips, beeps and bass lines. AlunaGeorge are marking themselves out as a staple of accessible cool, popping up everywhere from the Boiler Room to Radio 1, with each new song whipping fans into a frenzy over the band’s forthcoming album release. ASOS Magazine enjoyed a walk in the park with London’s hottest twosome to kick off the new season in style, and talked choreography, ball-busting and skimpy outfits… Describe your music… Aluna: ‘Heavy beats under pop songs.’ George: ‘Weird noises with lovely songs over the top.’ How did AlunaGeorge begin? G: ‘I got in touch with Aluna’s old band and offered to remix one of their songs. They indulged me and really liked what I did.’
A: ‘I decided it’d be fun to see if George could help write a song for our band and that’s when we first got in the studio. It didn’t sound anything like my other band, so we were curious about what else we could do. I told them I wanted to explore other options, and they didn’t want me to. You can’t stop creativity, so I walked out. That’s when we started AlunaGeorge.’ What inspires your songwriting? G: ‘My inspirations are more linear than Aluna’s, they’re solely music-based.’ A: ‘I draw from other things like stories people have told me, or a scenario that vaguely relates to something in my life, or something I’ve read.’ What’s the weirdest thing to inspire a lyric? A: ‘My friend introduced me to a TV show from the ’70s. There was an episode about a boy being stuck in a world of snow so I wrote a song about it called Secret Snow. It’s probably not a song you’ll ever hear, I didn’t even understand the lyrics myself!’ W ho would you most like to feature on an AlunaGeorge song? A: ‘This is an obvious one, but a little Frank Ocean would go a long way.’ G: ‘I’d really like to get Pharrell Williams or Busta Rhymes.’ ► ASOS.COM

ALUNA: ‘ON STAGE I GO SKIMPY BUT I DRESS THE SKIMPINESS WITH AN OVERSIZED JACKET ON TOP. AT A SHOWCASE ONCE, GEORGE HAD TO TELL ME THAT I HAD A CAMEL TOE SITUATION…’
A: ‘Busta Rhymes would bust my balls. I wouldn’t know what to do.’ Aluna, you flex some major dance skills in the You Know You Like It video. Who choreographed that? A: ‘There ain’t no choreography, girl. We had enough time to do one take for You Know You Like It. When I look at it now, I cringe. I can’t even imitate those moves. I don’t know what I was doing. I like dancing though, which helps. You get in your zone and go with it.’ How do you keep yourselves entertained on tour? A: ‘George is good at telling stories and I’m good at laughing at them.’ G: ‘We’ve got an Xbox on the tour bus.’ A: ‘That is not entertaining.’ G: ‘You’ve got your Sudoku!’ With a nod to your line, ‘You know you like it, but it drives you insane’, what drives you insane? G: ‘Traffic.’ A: ‘People talking while I’m watching a movie. Not just in the cinema, at home too. I’m a hard-core film watcher. Don’t say you want to watch a film if you just want to talk.’ What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? A: ‘I’d be an alternative health therapist. I studied reflexology so that interests me.’ G: ‘I’ve always worked towards this so I never planned to do anything else. I was meant to do a music degree but got a job playing keyboards for someone’s band. In an alternate universe I’d be an accountant or something.’ What’s the best freebie you’ve received? A: ‘I was recently given a Gumball Varsity jacket from America. It’s sick. I can’t actually drive though. I would smash that car straight into a tree and ruin the rally.’ What are your craziest stage outfits? G: ‘I’m a standard jeans and T-shirt guy, but Aluna goes up in pretty much just her pants.’ ASOS.COM

A: ‘I go skimpy but I dress the skimpiness with an oversized jacket on top. I’d love to wear something with tassels, but they’d get caught in my mic and my hair.’ Any on-stage outfit mishaps? A: ‘At a showcase once, George had to tell me that I had a camel toe situation…’ Where do you like to shop? A: ‘Mostly online because you can see more of the clothes in less time. But I was in the back streets of Kentish Town recently and there was a boutique called The Third Estate. Everything was organic and Fairtrade. They had a nice selection of T-shirts and dresses.’ Aluna, you accessorise with jewellery, what’s the most sentimental piece you own? A: ‘My grandpa’s ring. My uncle gave it to me, but my mum’s actually nicked it back because it was hers, which is a good thing because I lose all my jewellery. I love it, but it doesn’t stay with me, it just moves through my life.’ AlunaGeorge’s next single Your Drums, Your Love is out on 8 October
TOP 5 NEW ACTS By AlunaGeorge #1 GRIMES A: ‘I love the whole package. You can lay back and listen, or dance to it. She’s unique.’ #2 BONDAX G: ‘Two 17-18-year-old producers who create lush electronic tunes.’ #3 TWIN SHADOW A: ‘The new album is unbelievable.’ #4 FRANK OCEAN G: ‘Chanel Orange is a huge step up from Nostalgia, Ultra.’ #5 HAIM A: ‘They’re fun and I like the fact that they’re all sisters.’

Stylist magazine’s resident beauty expert spends her days organising shoots, trying out new make-up looks and meeting crazy deadlines I jump in the shower at 7am and listen to BBC 6 Music while I get dressed. I rely on basics such as vintage dresses, nav y jumpers, Chelsea boots, trench coats, and white shirts that I can add a bright necklace to. My style is quite tomboyish and I like well-cut, tailored pieces. My fantasy is Céline, but the reality is Cos and Whistles alongside traditional British brands such as Burberry and Church’s. I live in east London and get the bus to work for 9.30am. It gives me the chance to catch up on the Sunday supplements or a trashy autobiography – I just read Hilary Devey’s, embarrassingly – and I flick through emails on my iPhone. I get 300-400 per day so it’s important to keep up to date. Breakfast is a Pret skinny latte and mango, which I have

JOSH BEECH et’s face it, girlkind cannot resist a bad boy. From James Dean to Tom Hardy, our predilection for a man who looks like he’ll lead us astray remains as strong as ever. Enter model /musicia n Josh Beech, adorned in ink, a cigarette between his lips and swearing like a sailor on leave. ‘I wasn’t interested in modelling,’ he says from the West Hollywood apartment in which he lives with girlfriend and 90210 actress Shenae Grimes. ‘I thought it wasn’t cool. I was just a young lad with a nose piercing, excited about getting loads of tattoos and playing guitar.’ Scouted during his formative teen years while performing with his old band, the south Londoner originally gave his number to booker Cheryl Smith in an attempt to ‘shut her up’, but after some persuasive talk from his family, Beech landed his first job for Burberry. Talking of that label, he says, ‘Christopher Bailey [Burberry designer] is awesome, and I’m still close to everyone at Burberry.’ But is he still the reluctant model? ‘I’ve had some amazing experiences and met the best people because of it. I’m really pleased I went into Models 1 that day.’ Since then, he has graced the pages of GQ, Dazed & Confused and i-D as well as establishing himself as an ASOS favourite. ‘ASOS are like family,’ he says. ‘Daisy Horswill [ASOS menswear stylist] styles my band.’ Ah yes, he hasn’t forgotten his rock ’n’ roll roots. After changing his band’s name from Josh & The Johns to the eponymous Beech, the group – who his girlfriend Shenae describes as ‘a bit like Mumford & Sons’ – has played around the world at sold-out shows [‘I crowd-surfed out of the venue in Italy, it was awesome’] and is recording its first album. But the road to artistic success hasn’t been easy. ‘I’ve sacked a lot of the people who were working with us,’ he says. ‘I didn’t like the control they were having over the songs. I’ve got good people around me now and we’re going in a more indie direction.’ While not one to prescribe to ‘style heroes’ he admits Johnny Depp ‘is such a dude’ after catching the actor play guitar with Aerosmith at the Hollywood Bowl and describes Ryan
Gosling’s appeal as ‘laddie smoothness’ before professing his fondness for formal wear – ‘I love suits. My favourite was a black one sent to me by Paul Smith that fits me perfectly.’ Off-duty, the model’s no vintage fan – ‘I like knowing that no one’s died in my clothes’ – preferring high street. ‘I love All Saints and I wear a lot of Fred Perry because it’s “London lad” – that’s how I’d describe my style.’ Since relocating to L.A., the ‘London lad’ finds himself missing his mum, his friends and dog Bert – his pint-sized pug whose fame ASOS.COM

could rival Josh’s own. ‘I’m surprised this interview isn’t with him,’ he laughs. ‘He’s got an agent and won’t work for less than a grand.’ While there’s much to miss, his L.A. life has its perks – namely girlfriend Shenae Grimes, who flew to the UK to meet his family and take in the sights, ‘but she was sick,’ he says. ‘We were trying to get over jet lag, but once it’s gone 11pm in London, it’s difficult to find anywhere to eat that isn’t a kebab shop.’ Aaah, life might not always be a Beech, but all things considered, it’s sunny skies ahead. ▪

OCT 2012
A sweltering morning in the heart of West Hollywood, the day of our cover shoot. Outside the studio, our team sits on the ba k ing concrete, bask ing in the L .A. sunshine, while a tiny person with a mass of blonde hair regales her audience with a story about her experiences of stripping [for a film role] as if she’s known them her whole life. Her accent swings between Notting Hill and California depending upon the vowel, and in spite of everyone else sweating it out in as little clothing as is decent for public consumption, she barely looks bothered by the sun’s rays in a Kurt Cobain-style striped jumper, black jeans and heavy army boots. Meet Juno Temple, 23, one of a kind. Juno was four when she decided she wanted to be an actress after her father, the director Julien Temple, introduced her to film, sitting
her down in front of Jean Cocteau’s classic, La Belle et La Bête. Temple Sr’s own 1988 comedy Earth Girls Are Easy was, Juno says, one of her favourites growing up. Her first ever role was opposite Cate Blanchett and Dame Judi Dench in 2006’s Oscar-nominated Notes on a Scandal. Since that debut, she has worked almost continuously, most recently in The Dark Knight Rises [she was Catwoman’s best friend] and Killer Joe, alongside Matthew McConaughey. Previously, t here wa s Atonement, St Trinian’s, Greenberg and a short film called… erm… Bastard, among many others. The girl, you might say, is on a roll. ‘You just never know though,’ she says, earnestly, a few hours later, back in the sunshine after our shoot. ‘I’m about to go and start shooting a movie and it might be the last job I shoot. Do you know what I mean? I feel like I’ve worked really, really hard and it’s definitely paying off, but at the same time, who knows? But that’s what I like about the job, you never feel comfortable in it. ‘I’ve had extraordinary experiences. I got to work on The Dark Knight Rises – you walk on that set and your mind is blown – but then I did a tiny independent film called Little Birds [with Kate Bosworth] and we made it in 17 days and that blows my mind, too. I love it. I don’t want to stop, ever. I’m going to fight for it as long as possible and whether that leads to big things or little things, it’s all big to me, because I’m working.’ Despite growing up in England, moving between her parents’ houses in Somerset and west London, Juno’s been living in L.A. for almost four years. While she’s terribly British at times – everything is ‘extraordinary’ and, as yet, she doesn’t have a driving licence, practically unheard of in L.A. – she obviously loves her new home. ‘It was an adventure,’ she says of the decision to move overseas. ‘I’ve always thought that an adventure is something that, if it tickles your toes a little bit, then you should go with it. And I like it out here. I have a lot of people I love, I’ve made really great friends and I’ve fallen in love with someone really magical [the actor Michael Angarano]. And I never thought I’d say this, because I love rain, but actually, waking up to sunshine does wonders for your brain.’ Does she miss London? ‘I miss people in England a lot,’ she says. ‘But I don’t miss London as much as I thought I would. In L.A., you feel more OK with being a bit of a nomad, being a gypsy and having to go off for five weeks or two months. It kind of feels OK, whereas when I go to London and I leave, I’m like, “Eeeek!”.’ ASOS.COM

She’s a character, Juno Temple. Within five minutes of talking, she has lifted up her top to show me her bra, adding, ‘Is that inappropriate?’ as a very late afterthought. It’s not as weird as it might sound. We’re discussing her love of underwear, how in another universe she would have been a lingerie designer. ‘I had a good five years of wanting to do fashion,’ she says, pulling her stripy jumper back down. ‘I made a lot of clothes and I’ve got books and books of designs. But I think it would have been a tough business for me, not because I don’t think it’s brilliant, but because I’m not sure I’m feisty enough for it.’ For now, she sticks to collecting. She has 80 sets of Agent Provocateur underwear. ‘I think lingerie is a really powerful thing for a woman,’ she says. ‘Look at the way I’m dressed today! But underneath, it makes me feel like a woman and I love being a woman. I think you should secretly indulge in that every day.’ Acting might seem a more obvious choice for Juno, given her father’s involvement in the industry, but, in fact, it was her parents who tried to sway her away from the profession. ‘My mum used to say to me, “It’s all downhill from here” after I got a job,’ she laughs, of her first acting experience. ‘And there have been some moments where I’ve been really gutted by jobs, but I’ve never considered not doing it any more. Never. You do go through periods of not working, and it’s scary ►
SINCE MOVING TO L.A. I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE MAGICAL, AND ALTHOUGH I LOVE RAIN, WAKING UP TO SUNSHINE DOES WONDERS FOR YOUR BRAIN

and it’s lonely, and L.A. is the wrong place to be if that’s happening. You just want to go back to Somerset with your family. ‘But I think it goes without saying for any industry – if you want to be a banker, a nurse, a scientist, or an actor – you have to be passionate. If you’re passionate about it, you’ll make it somehow. I really believe that, and I think my parents saw that. ‘I’ve cried about it, sometimes you get sad and your heart gets broken over things. But that’s important, because if it doesn’t, then what the fuck am I doing this job for? If I don’t care enough, or if I’m not going to cry sometimes when I don’t get a job, then I don’t want to do it any more.’ You can’t really imagine Juno not being passionate about anything though. She’s a good stor y teller. A ll wide-eyed and excitable. When she tells you how she grew up believing in fairies, and managed to make everyone else around her believe in them too, you don’t doubt her. Get her onto the subject of shopping and there’s no stopping her. ‘I’m a really good shopper,’ she says, leaning forward. ‘I don’t question things. If I like something, then I’m taking it home. ‘I have an obscene wardrobe. I just moved out of my house and I had 14 boxes – eight of those were just clothing. I’m very good at convincing people to buy things, too. It just comes to a moment where it’s 20 bucks in a thrift store for a one-of-a-kind thing. You should relish those moments of finding amazing pieces. I just don’t think people should walk away from those things.’ Red carpet for Juno has been a mixture of designer and thrift. She was one of four actresses [the others were Hailee Steinfeld, Gemma Arterton and Léa Seydoux] invited to the Miu Miu show for Paris Fashion Week. They then dressed her for The Dark Knight Rises premiere in New York this summer. ‘I’m a huge fan of Miu Miu,’ she says. ‘I love the way their stuff fits me. Really beautiful pieces, but they’re still young. And I like some of the dresses at Agent Provocateur, the really great body-hugging ones. Fucking love Vivienne Westwood. Alexander McQueen. Azzedine Alaïa. Love that stuff. My mum has some exquisite Alaïa pieces from back in the day. And Balenciaga slacks are great. ‘But I find red carpets equally exciting and fucking terrifying. It’s so exciting to get to wear those beautiful clothes you could never even buy a shoelace from in the store – and when you put them on, you feel like a princess. But I’ve made some fa shion mista kes before. W hen I was 17, I turned up in the wrong outfit to a BAFTA thing and it was mortifying.’
But for every mistake, there’s been an outfit that’s more than made up for it. ‘I did have a cool moment this year,’ she says. ‘I went to one of the Oscar parties and I went to Squaresville, this vintage store in Los Feliz. They had this beautiful bias cut, electric blue, floor-length gown, with a zip up the front and a big sash. I was in the room, wearing a dress worth 17 dollars. That was cool.’ It’s all in the details with Juno. The delicate underwear, the thrift store treasures, and it would seem, the beauty products, too. ‘I’m as girlie as it gets,’ she laughs. ‘Dude, when I get out of the shower, it takes me 45 minutes to prep myself for bed. I’ve got a whole girlie regime of powders, potions and lotions. Like I said, I like being a woman, I really like it.’ The ability to go from grunge to girlie has been noticed by casting directors. While she can pull off English gentry in Atonement, she is equally perfect casting for the upcoming Lovelace, the story of porn star Linda Lovelace, infamous for ’70s film Deep Throat. Then she has the much-hyped Maleficent, alongside Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. Seems Juno’s the only person concerned that each job might be her last. ▪
I’VE CRIED ABOUT NOT GETTING ROLES , BUT THAT’S IMPORTANT, BECAUSE IF I DON’T CARE, THEN WHAT AM I DOING THIS JOB FOR?

G OTH GIRL Z Their wardrobes are bursting with black lace and new season leather [not to mention creepers and crucifixes] and they love a dramatic lip – here’s looking at you, Mary-Kate Olsen, front-row regular Michelle Harper and band The Black Belles! Take lace to your face with easy eye transfers, or up the ante with thick black eyeliner. Midnight parties wouldn’t be complete without A/W’12’s dark berry glossed lip. Or look to elegant drama queens who use one element to make their dark statement, like Florence Welch with her Pre-Raphaelite red hair [created by Bleach London] against pale skin, or actress Rooney Mara’s blunt, black fringe with those angular brows.
Known for her signature red lip, Michelle Harper likes a ‘deep, deep blood red, I use make-up as artistry’. Try a thick gloss for extra intensity.

Crazy ’60s sci-fi film Barbarella is Lana Del Rey’s buzzword and we can’t get enough of her pin-up looks. Draw attention to a so-now jewel-encrusted collar with a voluminous backcombed mane – you may want to bulk buy that root lift spray. This ultra-feminine style calls for bee-stung, glossed, Georgia May Jagger lips, too. For a cocktail glamour-thon, draw on a ‘50s flicked eye and wear a dress with a cinched-in waist. Or put Paloma Faith’s hair accessories and 3-D make-up on your moodboard to create a modern play on the past. Purr.

A/W’12 is all about rich, sumptuous textures. Recognising this, your fave brands have been quick to launch gobsmackingly good polishes. After the popularity of Ciaté’s Caviar Manicure, its Velvet Manicure, a matte crushed velvet, ticks all the boxes. Paint your nails in two coats of polish,

sprinkle the crushed velvet onto the wet nail then sweep off the excess using the enclosed brush. Nail Rock has also launched 3D Glitter and Designer nail wraps. Stick ‘em on for nails that stand out. Then there’s Nail Rock Frou Frou Nails – packs of cute 3-D stick-on characters. Play time!

Certain beauty icons define particular decades, from Louise Brooks’ ’20s blunt helmet bob, to Brigitte Bardot’s ’60s bouffant. Now make way for a modern-day revival, in which individuals inspired by classic beauties respin a look with 2012 kapow. Try Eylure’s 65th anniversary lashes for an instant beauty flashback. In four distinct styles, inspired by the swinging ’60s, channel your inner ‘It girl’ and get a Twiggy-worthy flutter with The Queen of Mod, or pick The Chelsea Look for some extra-glam volume. For c at wa l k i nspirat ion check out Pat McGrath’s make-up for Valentino A/W’12 – grey-lilac shades swept across lids and lashings of mascara that referenced ’70s star Anjelica Huston [top left]. It’s a vintage year.

Show-stopping sculpted shoes strutted down A/W’12 catwalks, with David Koma’s statuesque greyhound heels a firm favourite.
Stephane Marais’ Studio 54-inspired sketched eye at Jean Paul Gaultier was created using black kohl, liquid liner and greasepaint, applied in haphazard strokes then brushed.
BACK TO SCHOOL It usually takes a shopping trip for stationery to lift September’s mood, but with Illamasqua’s School of Make-up Art offering free mini masterclasses in London’s Soho, we’re queuing up to get back to studying. For more info, go to illamasqua.com.
If you’re planning on working a scarlet pout this season [who isn’t?], then a flawless face is essential. BareMinerals’ new SPF20 Correcting Concealer contains mineral colourant to instantly hide any imperfections. We also love Stila’s new Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer with its creamy concealer pot hidden in the cap, complete with mirror – neat!

BRANDS UP THE PRODUCT ANTE, THANKS TO FANTASTIC NEW INGREDIENTS It first happened in 2010, when Rodial launched its Glamoxy Snake Serum. Snake serum, you say? Not exactly, but the formula is inspired by the temple viper and is designed to plump the skin. The brand is known for pushing boundaries – does Dragon’s Blood Eye Gel ring any bells? Rodial is also jumping on the BB [blemish balm] bandwagon and launching BB Venom Skin Tints [not literally venom – it’s infused with SYN®AKE, but it got your attention, didn’t it?]. We’re also fans of NARS new skin range – the Optimal Brightening Concentrate contains Polynesian sea water that’s rich in minerals for ultimate skin hydration. NARS wouldn’t just use any sea water, you know… this is special!

Noisettes’ Shingai Shoniwa takes beauty inspiration from Hollywood’s golden age I was a tomboy when I was younger, whereas my twin was very glamourous and encouraged me to experiment with beauty. I’m inspired by silver screen sirens such as Lana Turner and Joan Crawford and fuse that with my Afro decadence to create individual looks. I exfoliate with St. Ives Apricot Scrub and steam my face once a week – it really helps hydrate my skin. I can’t live without Astral Moisturising Cream, and my friend Luella also makes amazing shea butter for me. There are great brands making products for black skin now, Lancôme in particular, as well as Georgio Armani Face Fabric Second Skin. When I’m performing I consider my mood and outfit, and if it’s an intimate venue I will accentuate my eyes with Estée Lauder Double Wear Zero Smudge Liquid Eyeliner, and tone down my lips – microphones have a tendency to smear off lipstick! I love gold and anything that warms my skin, offsetting it with matte pastels and burnt oranges. Vaseline Lip Therapy is my essential. When touring I get a weave or braids that will last so I can create different hairstyles, but if I have time off I wear my hair naturally, the early ’90s Whitney Houston wave being my ultimate style. If I’m using heat on my hair, I protect it with Moroccanoil first. As a bass and guitar player, having manicured nails is a treat – they chip so easily when I’m performing that I don’t do it often. I constantly refresh moodboards with fashion and beauty images that inspire me – I get ideas from everything.’ Noisettes’ single That Girl and album Contact are out now
