Accident & Emergency Procedures Unit Aims By the end of the unit participants should be able to:
Follow accident and emergency procedures a) recognise situations which could lead to accidents b) list the procedures to be followed in the event of an accident c) identify the location of first aid facilities d) state accident reporting procedures e) recognise emergency procedures (Syllabus Reference: 1.1.09)
State the basic action to be taken in the event of electric shock a) do not touch the casualty b) isolation of supply c) removal from live source using insulating material d) first aid through resuscitation e) treatment for burns, shock (Syllabus Reference: 1.1.10)
Accident & Emergency Procedures Preventing accidents Employees' responsibilities An employee can be prosecuted for breaking safety laws. Employees are required by law to:
take reasonable care for their own health and safety and not to endanger others cooperate with their employer on health and safety procedures not interfere with tools, equipment etc. provided for their health, safety and welfare correctly use all work items provided in accordance with instructions and training given to them
Accidents at work
Accidents are unplanned. Accidents do not "just happen". Accidents are caused by people.
An accident is an unexpected or unintentional event which is often harmful. There are three main causes:
people who become unsafe because of such factors as boredom, horseplay, carelessness or lack of knowledge people who have been provided with or maintained an unsafe environment people who have misused a safe one.

Lack of experience
Bad and foolish behaviour
Poor supervision
Improper dress
Fatigue
Lack of training
Use of alcohol or drugs.
Accident Procedures (pages 25 to 26 of ‘Electrical Installations Level 2 2330 Technical Certificate’) It is important to:
Check for further danger to yourself and the casualty
Make an assessment of the casualty – are they bleeding, are they breathing, are they unconscious
Summon help
Only move the casualty if it is really necessary; for serious injuries the casualty should remain still until professional medical help has arrived.
Accident reporting to include:
Details of the person injured
Details of any witnesses
Details of what happened
Date and time of the accident
Details of the injury sustained
Name and signature of the person reporting the accident.
