Aged 50+? Living in the Barnsley area?
We are here for you!
Age UK Barnsley is a local charity. Our mission is to promote the wellbeing, independence, dignity, choice and inclusion of older people in the Barnsley area. We offer the following services: Information and Advice
We offer a free, confidential and impartial Information and Advice service dealing with issues which concern older people. Our service has experienced members of staff and volunteers and has achieved the national Advice Quality Standard. We will provide you with relevant information for your situation, provide you with options and advice, support you in making telephone calls, form filling and signpost you to other relevant organisations. We can help with; • General Advice • State Pension Age Benefits • Health and Social Care • Housing options …and much more
Health and Wellbeing Centre
We provide Day Care in a friendly and stimulating environment for people who need a little help with daily tasks as well as those with more complex needs. We also offer support for those with dementia and older people’s health conditions. Based at Queens Road, Barnsley, the service is available Monday to Friday (not Thursdays) each week 9.00am-2.30pm. We focus on supporting people to retain their existing skills, and to gain new ones and we believe that you are never too old to enjoy something new or different. You will need to contact your district social work office for an assessment of your needs under the Fair Access to Care criteria (FACS). We are also able to offer places to people who are currently outside the FACS criteria and who wish to purchase privately and to people receiving a Personal Budget.
Access Barnsley
Provides scooter and wheelchair hire to enable people aged 18 and over who are restricted by temporary or permanent disability to be able to access the shops and facilities of Barnsley Town Centre. Powered scooters and manual wheelchairs can be hired Monday - Saturday (excluding Bank Holidays) for either half a day or a full day from our Eldon Street shop.
Social Inclusion Projects
These are funded through Barnsley Council’s Area Councils and provide opportunities for both one to one befriending and support (telephone and face to face) and also the setting up of new social groups as well as supporting established groups. Where these projects are in place we have dedicated social inclusion workers working in the areas supported by a network of volunteers.
Men in Sheds Projects
Are places where like-minded older men can come together, have a chat over tea and biscuits whilst learning new skills such as woodworking, IT, Art and much more... Sheds projects aim to support men aged 50 and over who may have experienced life changing events such as redundancy, retirement, bereavement and mental or physical ill-health. We currently have Men in Sheds Projects in central Barnsley and Penistone. We also take a leading role in various local partnerships and alliances including Age Friendly Barnsley, Barnsley Third Sector Dementia Alliance and Barnsley Older People Physical Activity Alliance (BOPPAA). All of these are working to make Barnsley a good place to grow old in.
