Recipients included a nurse whose career spans a remarkable 50 years.

Catheter care sister Sharon Bannister received the lifetime achievement award for her ‘outstanding and professional’ service, which often saw her going above and beyond for patients. Sharon’s compassion and expertise has supported many thousands of patients in the Warrington area in a career spanning an amazing half century. On receiving her award, Sharon said: “I have been very happy as a nurse, frustrated at times, particularly in the past 18-months which have been a nightmare, but what can you do apart from get on with it. “I have been very happy in the job and this has been a lovely team to work with. I want to thank you all for being so nice. “I have had a lot of patients who have been very upset, but if they left and I knew they were smiling. I was happy. Speaking about the annual staff recognition awards, Bridgewater Chief Executive Colin Scales said: “Our Bridgewater Thank You awards brought together teams and individuals whose passion, determination and resilience supported the delivery of some fantastic schemes, projects and developments. “NHS community services make a huge difference to many thousands of people’s lives in the communities we proudly serve. “This year we have been overwhelmed by the public’s generosity and support for our staff and we thank them for their continued understanding and patience as we tackle the impact that Covid-19 has had on us all.” The final word we leave for Sharon though. Fifty years is a long time in the NHS. What guidance would she give any aspiring new nurses out there on pursuing a career in health and care? “My advice to new nurses is to always listen to what patients have to say, and if you have to make them a cup of tea, make them a cup of tea. “It might be trivial to you what they have to say, but making time is what being a nurse is all about.” For a full list of winners at the Bridgewater 2021 ‘Thank You’ Awards, please visit www.bridgewater.nhs.uk.
