MARQUETTE AND TEMPLE ON THE HORIZON – On Dec. 16, 2010, Marquette University announced it would add men’s and women’s lacrosse which will begin competition in the spring of 2013. The Golden Eagles will play as an independent their first season, before becoming a full member of the BIG EAST in 2014.

WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE – There is one new head coach in the BIG EAST this season. Gina Oliver was named head coach at Cincinnati on June 15, 2012.

On Feb. 14, 2011, Marquette announced the hiring of Meredith Simon Black (Notre Dame ‘04) as its first women’s lacrosse head coach. She joins the Golden Eagles after spending the 2011 season at Cal. Previously she served as an assistant coach at Towson from 2004-2010.

She spent the last five seasons (2008-2012) at Duquesne as the defensive coordinator, where she produced a 2012 Atlantic-10 Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

On March 7, 2012 it was announced that Temple would be joining the league. The Owls competed in the BIG EAST in football for the 2012 season and will join the league in all sports on July 1, 2013.

During her time at Duquesne, Oliver coached six IWLCA All-Region players, 21 all-conference honorees, 13 members of the A-10 All-Rookie Team and 12 student-athletes who won academic allconference accolades. A 2005 graduate of Ohio State University, Oliver spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons on the Buckeyes staff.

Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen is no stranger to the BIG EAST having spent 10 years at UConn. She led UConn to a 2005 ECAC Championship and a Top 20 National Ranking during her decade in Storrs. Rosen was named one of Inside Lacrosse Magazine’s Top 50 All-Time Players. In 2009, Rosen was inducted into the Eastern Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and in 2010 she was inducted into both the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

2013 Preview

Syracuse Picked To Win 2013 Regular-Season Title - Orange seniors Michelle Tumolo and Becca Block earn preseason Player of the Year honors -

Syracuse was unanimously picked as the preseason favorite in the 2013 BIG EAST women’s lacrosse coaches’ poll. The Orange return 10 starters and 24 letterwinners from last year’s team, the most successful in program history. Syracuse earned all eight first-place votes and totaled 64 points in the poll. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. Syracuse (19-4, 8-0 BIG EAST) advanced to the NCAA Championship title game last year before losing to then-No. 2/2 Northwestern 8-6. The Orange went undefeated in BIG EAST regularseason play and totaled a school-record 19 wins. Syracuse senior Michelle Tumolo, the league’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, was a unanimous pick for the distinction. Accordingly, she was a unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST pick as well. Last year Tumolo had a careerhigh 95 points, was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award and was named the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year. PREVIEW

• Losing just four letterwinners from last season’s team, Louisville returns 76-percent of last year’s points (162 out of 212 points). Junior Nikki Boltja had 55 points while junior Jamie Redding finished the year with 35 points. • The Cardinals expect to have one of the top offensive tandems in the country, with the return of All-BIG EAST and All-Region honorees Katie Oliverio and Boltja. Oliverio, who ranked first in the country in assists per game in 2010 and second in 2011, missed the 2012 season with an injury. In the last two seasons, Oliverio has totaled 89 assists. Boltja had a stellar sophomore campaign in 2012, finishing fourth in the country in goals per game and 20th in goals (53). She scored at least three goals in 10 games.

PREVIEW

• Rutgers returns 57-percent of its offense from a season ago, including senior midfielder and captain Stephanie Anderson, who scored a team-best 41 goals last year. Anderson was named to the All-BIG EAST and IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Second Teams in 2012. • The returning defense, which welcomes back four letterwinners, will be led by senior captain and four-year starter Lily Kalata. The goalkeeper returns after ranking second in the league with a 9.7 goals against average a season ago. Kalata was named to the IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Team for the third-straight season in 2012. • RU welcomes eight newcomers to the team this fall, including five high school all-Americans – three midfielders, three attacks, a goalkeeper and a defenseman. • Head coach Laura Brand-Sias is on the precipice of winning her 100th career game with a record of 97-81.
