Detroit’s most interesting architecture

The architecture in Detroit demonstrates the past, present, and future beauty of the city. From intricate 1920s Art Deco structures to modern skyscrapers, each building showcases Detroit’s spirit uniquely.

In both style and history, here is some of the most interesting architecture in the Motor City.

Fisher Building

3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit; fisherbuilding.city

Designed by Albert Kahn in the late 1920s, the Fisher Building stands tall in Detroit’s skyline, boasting unique Art Deco intricacies inside and out. The building was originally supposed to include three skyscrapers, but the Great Depression limited the project to one. Its website calls it “a beacon for Detroit,” and “a symbol of a proud past and promising future,” for the city. The building’s interior features the iconic Fisher Theatre, an arcade, a coffee shop, a full-service salon, clothing boutiques, office space, and more.

Guardian Building

500 Griswold St., Detroit; guardianbuilding.com

This skyscraper in downtown Detroit’s financial district was built in 1928, and designed by Wirt C. Rowland. Its Art Deco design features colorful tilework, ceiling murals, and intricate details. The building, originally called the Union Trust Building, now offers modern office space for lease.

Sainte Anne de Detroit

est operating parish in the country, tracing its origins back to French colonist Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac who founded Detroit. Amid violent tensions between Native Americans and the French settlers, the original log cabin that housed the parish was burned down. The church’s current structure, built in 1886, blends French Gothic and Romanesque Revival styles for a stunning interior.

Fox Theatre

2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313presents.com

Detroit’s Fox Theatre opened in 1928 as a flagship movie palace for the nationwide chain, becoming the largest theater in the city with over 5,000 seats. Architect C. Howard Crane’s design merges Egyptian, Indian, and Far Eastern influences, creating a mesmerizing ambiance for live performances. The theater ranked 15th in the nation and 16th in the world in Pollstar’s 2022 Year-End Rankings for Top 200 Theatres.

Penobscot Building

A product of 1928, the Penobscot Building, another Art Deco by the same architect as the Guardian, once reigned as one of Detroit’s tallest skyscrapers until the construction of the Renaissance Center. Its uniquely leveled peaks are recognizable, and its entrance is beautiful, making a great exterior.

The Masonic Temple

500 Temple St., Detroit; themasonic.com

Detroit’s Masonic Temple is the largest Masonic Temple in the world, constructed in the 1920s. George Mason’s design mixes Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance Revival elements, including three theaters, a Shrine building, a Chapel, and more, though it remains unfinished.

The Russell Industrial Center

1600 Clay St., Detroit; russellindustrialcenter.com

Originating as a manufacturing hub, the Russell Industrial Center now thrives as a haven for artists and entrepreneurs, plus an event venue. Right off the freeway, the building is recognized by a large mural and colored square tiled windows.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church

646 Monroe Ave., Detroit; oldstmarysdetroit.com

The vastness of the church’s interior is striking as are many of the characteristics that make the building unique. The church contains three grottos that emulate artificial caves to be used as altars depicting Christ’s agony, Christ’s baptism, and the Lourdes Grotto.

Michigan Central Train Station

2001 15th St., Detroit; michigancentral.com

Welcoming travelers since 1913, the Michigan Central Train Station exudes elegance and remains a symbol of Detroit’s past as a transportation hub. After three decades of being shut down, the space is planning to reopen this year on June 6. Ford Motor Co. bought the blighted train depot in 2018 and renovations have been taking place for the past six years so the space can hold events, arts programming, a technology hub, and more.

Book Tower

seum of African American History is one of the world’s oldest independent African American museums. Its contemporary building is unlike any other structure in Detroit.

Detroit Athletic Club

Mariner’s Church of Detroit

170 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit; marinerschurchofdetroit.org

Constructed in 1849, the Mariner’s Church of Detroit watches over the Detroit River in protection of Detroit’s sailors who were often treated as pariahs in traditional society. In 1955, plans for a new civic center on the former site of the church called for its demolition, but instead, the 3,000-ton building was moved 880 feet east to its current location. At this time, a secret underground tunnel revealed its role as a stop along the Underground Railroad. The various acclaimed stained glass windows in the church depict sailors and symbols of the Great Lakes.

Built in 1855, St. Joseph Oratory is among the most prized historical possessions of the city. Just outside downtown, in the Eastern Market-Lafayette Park neighborhood, St. Joseph was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The building is renowned for the intricacies of its stained glass, found on nearly all walls of the building, flooding the main chamber with natural light.

What your Detroit suburb says about you

People definitely judge you based on what high school and college you attend, but where you choose to live as an adult is even more telling. Whether you’re willing to admit it, everyone makes judgments based on where other people live.

When it comes to Detroit suburbs, people in the city and other towns have perceptions about people living in other local areas. Hey, don’t come at us for this, we’re just telling you what everyone else is already thinking. This is what may come to mind when you tell people what part of metro Detroit you live in.

Royal Oak

You’re a sorta-cool progressive white person who may have lived in the city when you were younger, but then got married and had kids and moved out to a house that is too expensive for how mid it looks.

Dearborn

Statistically speaking, you are probably Arab and you definitely know where the best shawarma and hookah bars are.

Ferndale

You’re probably a part of the LGBTQ+ community or at least an ally, you like to drink coffee, and you complain all the time that Ferndale used to be better before it started getting more like Royal Oak.

Birmingham

You’re from new money and when you and your spouse aren’t working your intense jobs, you’re on Tinder looking for a third.

Allen Park

You are Downriver, with all that that entails, which means you are either a blue-collar worker or a savvy drug entrepreneur.

Farmington Hills

Honestly, a white guy rapping about being the king of “Farmington, Farmington Hills” while wearing Crocs pretty much sums up your entire vibe.

Pleasant Ridge

You consider yourself a progressive, but you prefer living in a community secluded from everything you say you care about.

West Bloomfield

You’re very wealthy.

Hamtramck

You are either an immigrant from Yemen or Bangladesh or a borderline alcoholic.

Southfield

You used to live in Detroit and now you just talk shit about it.

Pontiac

You think you live in a city. (Spoiler: you do not.)

Madison Heights

You know all the best Asian restaurants.

Livonia

You’re probably white and your politics are straight outta the 1950s.

Berkley

You’re a young white professional with your starter home.

Clarkston

You think you’re country, but you’re not.

Ecorse

You could have been a part of the Black Mafia Family, or at least know some people who were.

Saint Clair Shores

You like to watch hockey and drink beer, and would rather live in a further north suburb but can’t afford it. You never go downtown Detroit even though it’s only 20 minutes away and you think you’re better than Eastpointe and Roseville.

Eastpointe

You’d rather be at a Kid Rock concert.

Grosse Pointe Woods

You’re new to Grosse Pointe and this is the only part of Grosse Pointe that you can afford.

Warren

Eminem grew up here… ’nuff said.

Troy

You work in an office park and are known to shop at the Somerset Collection.

Rochester Hills

You are so boring that you scared Madonna away.

Dearborn Heights

Dearborn Heights? More like Dearborn Lite.

Macomb Township

You are first-generation rich with enough money to move away from the city and live in a boring subdivision, drink a lot of wine, and sleep with your neighbor’s husband.

Clinton Township

You’re probably Italian and used to live in St. Clair Shores. You only shop at Randazzo’s.

Taylor

Yeehaw!

Fraser

You’re a young professional or retiree who probably leans conservative and your high school was nicknamed “heroin high.”

Garden City

Your city has some strange shit like a famous pig on a stick and a peacock roaming around the streets, but at least you get to take credit for being home to the first Little Caesars.

Grosse Pointe Shores

Your family has been in Grosse Pointe for generations and your kids probably go to private school.

Wyandotte

You live in the Royal Oak of Downriver.

28 | METROTIMES | City Guide 2024 | metrotimes.com

Grosse Pointe Farms

You talk bad about Grosse Pointe but you will never leave. You definitely have a trust fund and alcoholism in your family tree. If you’re a man, you wear loafers with no socks and have luscious thick gray hair.

Harrison Township

Your prized possession is a boat with a big Trump flag.

Hazel Park

You either have a Thin Blue Line flag or a Pride flag flying on your front porch, you must pledge allegiance to one.

Huntington Woods

You’re a young professional with children and you spend a lot of time at soccer events and in PTA drama. Odds are high you know someone who’s swapped spouses.

Inkster

Everybody knows better than to fuck with you and you’re OK with that.

Oak Park

You can’t afford Ferndale.

Auburn Hills

People used to pretend to like you when things were still happening at The Palace, but now that it’s gone no one thinks about you anymore.

Lincoln Park

Like Allen Park but with more Mexicans.

Plymouth

You think your downtown is super cute but it’s really just strange and boring.

Bloomfield Township

You have a circle drive in front of your very large home.

metrotimes.com | City Guide 2024 | METROTIMES | 29
Cruising culture is alive and well in Birmingham. | Shutterstock

Metro Detroit has its fair share of communities on the other side of the tracks, all with their own charm. | Shutterstock

Milford

You’re afraid of Detroit, so you moved as far away from the city as possible.

Mount Clemens

You’re from Macomb County, but at least you have a walkable downtown.

Franklin

You live in a castle.

Novi

You’re probably an engineer.

Melvindale

Smell-vindale.

Grosse Pointe Park

You’re outdoorsy and think you’re a hipster but probably aren’t. You’re OK but still weird and not cool enough to just live in Detroit.

Northville

You’re extremely white.

Redford Township

Your truck costs more than your house.

Flat Rock

You work at “Ford’s.”

River Rouge

You probably also work at “Ford’s.”

Roseville

You’re white trash and proud.

Shelby Township

You live in a McMansion.

Beverly Hills

You live in a tri-level home and wish you lived in Beverly Hills, California.

Clawson

You’re basically the same as Berkley, but with a slightly better downtown.

Sterling Heights

More McMansions.

Waterford

Lots of cocaine and boats.

Belleville

Do you like techno?

Utica

For Macomb County, you have a surprisingly charming downtown.

Westland

Your biggest dream is to have a pickup truck.

Grosse Ile

What if Grosse Pointe… but on an island?

New Detroit-area restaurants to look forward to in 2024

In 2023, metro Detroit gained a bunch of new eateries, bars, and cafes — and we have plenty more to look forward to in the new year, too. These spots are all expected to open in 2024, and we can’t wait to try them. Of course, opening dates are always something of a moving target, especially in this business, so stay tuned.

Sexy Steak

1942 Cass Ave., Detroit; sexysteakdetroit.com

After being closed for years, Detroit’s historic Grand Army of the Republic Building is now once again open to the public as the home of the new restaurant Sexy Steak. The Italian steakhouse takes up the first and second floors of the building, while a private event space called Castle Hall is set to open on the third and fourth floors that can host private parties and weddings. Highlights include a Himalayan salt-lined case in the dining room showcasing premium cuts of beef, where diners can personally select their cut, as well as an oyster bar. All meat served is halal.

PUMA

4725 16th St., Detroit; instagram.com/puma_detroit

Following success with Core City’s upscale Argentine restaurant Barda, James Beard finalist Javier Bardauil is getting ready to open PUMA. The new nearby spot will offer a more casual atmosphere to appeal to a younger, late-night crowd. PUMA’s Instagram page says “Coming Soon,” so hopefully we get an official opening date ASAP.

Dutch Girl Donuts

19000 Woodward Ave., Detroit

This may have been one of the biggest Detroit stories in 2023, as this humble dough-

nut spot was a favorite to many for more than 70 years until it closed in 2021, following the death of owner Gene Timmer. In November, it was announced that the beloved shop had been sold to Paddy Lynch, owner of the Schvitz bathhouse and third-generation leader of Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors. Since the Lynch family has ties with the former owners, hopes of maintaining the same Dutch Girl Donuts are high; Timmer’s son Jon is even expected to stay on as baker, a job he’s held for 20 years

Louisiana Creole Gumbo

2830 Gratiot Ave., Detroit; louisianacreolegumbo.com

This long-standing spot in Eastern Market closed its original location in November, which owners blamed on gentrification. Fortunately, it’s moving just a few blocks away to a larger home with plans that include a sit-down restaurant, two outdoor patios, and live entertainment.

Jollibee

44945 Woodridge Dr., Sterling Heights; 586-544-4090; locations.jollibeefoods.com

People were super excited about this famous Philippines-based fast-food chain opening its first Michigan location. Founded in 1978, the chain is known for putting a Filipino twist on American dishes, like fried chicken, burgers, spaghetti (topped with a sweet sauce, ham, and hot dog), and peach-mango hand pies. It was originally supposed to open in October, but the opening date got pushed back to winter 2024.

Vecino

4100 Third Ave., Detroit; vecinodetroit.com

As you can probably tell, opening a restaurant often takes longer than people think. This Mexican restaurant with an “agave-forward” bar was intended to open in Midtown in November, but will now open sometime in 2024. The spot is currently hiring for all positions.

Little Liberia

6513 Woodward Ave., Detroit; instagram.com/little_liberia

The news that the Room Project, a co-working space for women and nonbinary people, was closing was painful news for many in the community. Looking on the bright side, however, this African-fusion pop-up plans to open

a permanent location in its former space, with a grand opening expected to come in mid to late 2024.

Gajiza Dumplins

16530 E. Warren Ave., Detroit; instagram. com/gajizadumplins

In 2023, numerous new small businesses opened in Detroit’s Morningside neighborhood, alongside a few announcements of planned developments in the area. Those include mixed-use housing and retail complex the Ribbon, where Gajiza Dumplins plans to open a brick-and-mortar store. The Southeast Asian-inspired eatery has held pop-ups in the former Lost River tiki bar and now at The Fourth Wall, the new film-focused wine bar that recently opened in its place.

Ice Cream Detroit

3762 2nd Ave., Detroit; instagram.com/theicecreamdetroit

This liquor-infused ice cream and sorbet shop has faced several delays. Expected to finally open in the fall, now its social media accounts say spring 2024. Hopefully, it’s true this time.

Big Chicken

Multiple locations; bigchicken.com

In August, Michigan-based restaurant operators H&D Group Investments signed a deal with Shaquille O’Neal’s fast-casual chicken

chain to develop 20 locations across the state, with plans to open in Ann Arbor, Lansing, Flint, Saginaw, Mount Pleasant, and metro Detroit. The first location is planned for Clio, set to open in early 2024, with a second location announced to open in Highland in the spring.

Haraz Coffee

1611 Michigan Ave., Detroit; harazcoffeehouse.com

Dearborn-born Yemeni cafe chain Haraz plans to open a second Detroit location in Corktown, one of two retailers that will come to a new seven-story apartment building called Perennial Corktown. With the new spot, the shop will partner with Dearborn ice cream store JJS Custard Co. to bring frozen treats to the menu. Doors are expected to open in early 2024.

Pie Sci Oak Park

8140 W. Nine Mile Rd., Detroit; piescipizza.com

In September, Detroit pizza spot Pie Sci, known for its unconventional creations, announced it would be opening a new take-out location in Oak Park. The new spot opened in early 2024.

Fixins Soul Kitchen

1435 Randolph St., Detroit; fixinssoulkitchen.com

Former NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson is bringing his soul food spot to the D, and the new

eatery is expected to be Fixins’ largest location yet, with seating for 325 people. Johnson and his wife Michele have opened three Fixins locations since founding it in 2019: two in California in Sacramento and Los Angeles, and one in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Initial announcements said Johnson wanted to start serving at the new spot by mid-December or early 2024. It hasn’t opened yet, so let’s hope it’s coming soon.

Elephant & Co.

456 Charlotte St., Detroit

Just months after Founders Brewing Co. abruptly shuttered its beleaguered Detroit taproom, Eastern Market Brewing Co. announced plans to move into the space, set to open in 2024. The spot will offer self-service taps, Detroit-style pizza, and coffee and doughnuts from Dooped Donuts. Elephant & Co. also plans to offer a first-of-its-kind service in Michigan to deliver pizza and beer directly to customers.

The Modern Vegan

304 Main St., Royal Oak; instagram.com/themodernvegan.detroit

If you’re a vegan who’s always looking for more metro Detroit options, there’s one on

the way. This popular Las Vegas vegan spot, which boasts the largest vegan menu in the world, announced in September that it plans to open a Detroit location. While there is no grand opening date yet, the spot is expected to be coming soon.

Lily’s and Elise Tea House

19037 Livernois Ave., Detroit; lilysandelise.com

Kimberly Elise is getting ready to open Detroit’s only high tea house on the city’s Avenue of Fashion. After signing a lease for the building in February 2020 and facing setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Elise is apparently finally in a good spot. The tea house is currently hiring for all positions and accepting reservations for events, and a public grand opening is expected to be announced soon.

Arrie

Location TBA

This Southern fusion pop-up, run by chefs Davante Burnley and Dominic McCord is expected to open a full-service restaurant in Detroit’s Harmonie Park area in early 2024, according to What Now Detroit. The restaurant is part of a development called the Par-

adise Valley Cultural and Entertainment District, which will highlight Black-owned businesses.

Aussie Grill by Outback

39707 Ford Rd., Canton

Fans of the Bloomin’ Onion, rejoice: The Outback Steakhouse chain plans to bring its fast-casual spinoff Aussie Grill by Outback to Michigan in January. It will be the chain’s first U.S. location outside of Florida, and in true Motor City fashion, plans call for a drive-thru.

Hilton Road Cafe

3150 Hilton Rd., Ferndale

Detroit chef Nikita Sanches (of Rock City Eatery fame) posted a photo on social media showing a key and the Hilton Road Cafe with the caption, “We’re taking it back to where it all began. See you soon, Ferndale! Stay tuned for details.” The long-standing brunch spot closed in 2023 after being open since 2008. We don’t know whether the new business will be the same as the old one or something brand new, but with Sanches at the helm, we’re already excited.

Detroit’s gifts to the world

Detroiters are known for their immense hometown pride, often boasting about the gems that the city has to offer. Well, it’s our turn now.

Throughout time, the Motor City has inspired and influenced people across the globe in realms including arts, culture, music, the auto industry, and more.

Here are some of our favorite gifts that Detroit has given to the world.

Vernors

If you’re from Detroit, you know Vernors is considered medicine. Its creator James Vernor was a pharmacist, so it seems even more believable. The ginger ale is actually one of the country’s oldest pops, first served to the public in 1866.

The Motown sound

Motown Records, founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in 1959 as Tamla Records, introduced the world to a new and distinctive sound: a style of soul music with mainstream pop appeal that broke racial boundaries. Artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Temptations, Diana Ross, and many others produced hit songs for Motown that helped shape the landscape of popular music.

Alcohol during prohibition

During the 1920s prohibition era, 70% of all the illegal alcohol that entered the United States came through Detroit. So, the city was basically supplying the nation with booze and good times.

Phone numbers

Detroit was the first city to ever assign phone numbers back in 1879, so you can thank Motown for being able to get your crush’s digits.

The Detroit Institute of the Arts

The DIA houses one of the largest art collections in the United States, including works by renowned artists who have inspired worldwide creativity such as Vincent van Gogh and Diego Rivera. Plus, it was just named the No. 1 art museum in the nation by USA Today, a title that the spot has held numerous times.

Techno music

Detroit is considered the birthplace of techno music, emerging in the early 1980s from the city’s underground electronic music scene. Detroit techno evolved from a blend of funk, electro, and European electronic sounds, creating a distinctive style that influenced electronic music worldwide.

Faygo pop

Born in Detroit in 1907, Faygo has become an iconic symbol of Detroit’s culture. From classics like Redpop to unique flavors such as Cotton Candy, Faygo has since been served up far beyond its hometown.

Detroit Youth Choir

The DYC’s time on America’s Got Talent put them on a public stage where they captivated audiences with strong performances and inspiring stories. The recently released Disney+ show Choir, which showed the group’s journey to performing at Carnegie Hall, did the same. In both cases, the DYC not only showcases the talent of Detroit’s youth but also serves as a positive light for the city and a source of inspiration for people everywhere.

Four-way traffic lights

The very first four-way traffic light was hung at the intersection of Woodward and Fort St. in Detroit. Serving as a safety protocol and a solution to increased traffic, fourway traffic lights quickly gained popularity and became a standard feature in urban areas worldwide.

Aretha Franklin

Emerging from the gospel scene of Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church, the Queen of Soul left an undeniable mark on music history with hits like “Respect,” and “I Say a Little Prayer.” Beyond her music, she championed civil rights and Indigenous communities’ rights, earning 18 Grammy Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Modern-day paved roads

Detroit played a significant role in the development of paved roads in the United States as one of the first cities to experiment with paving roads using materials like brick, concrete, and asphalt. In 1909, a mile of Woodward Avenue from Six Mile to Seven Mile was converted to concrete, which helped pioneer road construction and paving techniques nationwide.

Detroit hip-hop

While Eminem remains one of the biggest rappers of all time, Detroit has a vibrant rap scene, with artists such as Tee Grizzley, Danny Brown, Icewear Vezzo, Babyface Ray, 42 Dugg, Babytron, and more creating a fresh sound that reaches a global audience, plus contributes to the growth and evolution of hip-hop culture.

Detroit-style pizza

Detroit-style pizza is characterized by its rectangular shape, thick crust, crispy edges, and deepdish construction. Originating from Detroit pizzerias in the 1940s allegedly utilizing a metal pan made for car parts, this distinctive style has gained popularity nationwide in recent years and has become a beloved culinary tradition.

Movement Festival

Since techno music started in the D, it’s only fitting for the city to host one of the biggest festivals centering on electronic music. The Detroit Electronic Music Festival started in 2000 to celebrate Detroit’s techno heritage and after coming under producers Paxahau, the city’s Memorial Day weekend electronic music festival became known as the Movement Music Festival. The annual event attracts electronic music enthusiasts from around the world.

Urban freeways

The Davison Freeway in Detroit is often cited as one of the earliest urban freeways in the world. Completed in 1942, the freeway was a pioneering project in urban transportation planning and engineering. Its construction marked a shift in urban transportation infrastructure, setting a precedent for the development of urban freeways in cities across the United States and around the world.

Detroit vs. Everybody

Originating as a clothing brand in 2012 created by Tommey Walker, “Detroit vs. Everybody” has since gained global recognition. The phrase’s message of resilience and unity expanded its appeal, leading to it being adopted in various contexts

worldwide. Inspired by Detroit, festivals, cities, and other communities now often put their own twist on the slogan.

Detroit rock ’n’ roll

Thanks in part to the influential Creem magazine, Detroit became a capital of rock ’n’ roll music in the ’60s and ’70s, with influential acts like the MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Death, Rodriguez, and more hailing from here.

Detroit Riverfront

Detroit’s revitalized riverfront, which was named the best in the nation by USA Today for three consecutive years, serves as a model for urban waterfront revitalization projects worldwide.

J Dilla

Renowned as a groundbreaking figure in hip-hop production, J Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey, spent much of his life in Detroit. His innovative off-kilter beats influenced an entire era of hip-hop, collaborating with icons such as Slum Village, the Pharcyde, Erykah Badu, and Common.

The Assembly Line

Henry Ford’s use of assembly lines revolutionized manufacturing, making mass

production of automobiles more efficient and affordable. This approach transformed not only the automotive industry but also influenced manufacturing methods across various sectors globally.

John Witherspoon

Beloved comedian and actor John Witherspoon, who passed away in 2019, was originally from Detroit. His career spanned decades and made a worldwide impact through productions like Friday and The Boondocks

The Model T

The Ford Model T, produced by the Ford Motor Company, became the first affordable automobile accessible to the middle class. Its mass production techniques and standardized parts set a precedent for modern automotive manufacturing and transformed the way people traveled and lived.

Eminem

Rising from the underground Detroit rap scene, Eminem shattered stereotypes and challenged societal norms with his provocative and often controversial content. His rapid-fire delivery, complex rhyme schemes, and clever wordplay set a new standard for technical skill in hiphop. While now a bit of a recluse, he remains one of the most influential and celebrated figures in hip-hop history.

State fairs

The second-ever state fair was held in Detroit in 1849. The Detroit State Fair served as a model for other state fairs across the United States, successfully showcasing agricultural, industrial, and cultural achievements and inspiring other cities and states to establish their own state fairs. Over time, state fairs became an integral part of American culture across the country. While the last Detroit State Fair was held in 2009, since 2013, a Michigan State Fair has been held in Novi.

Some great movies

There have been numerous big and small movies that many may not know were filmed in and around Detroit, such as the Transformers popcorn flicks and the low-budget horror fave It Follows, among others.
