Welcome to the High Life
No matter which way you slice it, it’s been a huge year for weed in the state of Missouri.
Since recreational use was legalized in February 2023, the Show-Me State has proven itself a voracious consumer of cannabis, exceeding all early expectations and boasting a whopping $1.3 billion in sales to date — or $4 million each day. Missouri has quickly become one of the top 10 markets in the country, and the industry has proven itself to be a reliable source of employment for tens of thousands of the state’s residents.
All that enthusiasm has also led to innovation, as the entities that were fortunate enough to secure licenses compete fiercely to provide cannabis consumers the best possible products and the ideal purchasing experiences. In this guide we highlight some of the standouts our esteemed weed reviewers have sampled this year and speak with legacy breeder Jay Wills of Tree1Four Genetics about the origins of his potent Mississippi Nights strain, already cemented as one of Vibe’s standouts and a tribute to the storied and bygone St. Louis venue of the same name.
You’ll also find in these pages a look at some of the area’s premier dispensaries and what makes them uniquely able to serve St. Louis stoners with very specific needs and a roundup of 4/20 events for those who celebrate the High Holiday.
So smoke ‘em if you got ‘em and read on to see what’s new in our brave new world of weed. Missouri may be only a little more than a year into living the high life, but we have a feeling things are only gonna go up from here.

Historic Highs
The Show-Me State’s first year of adult recreational use triggered an average of $4 million in cannabis sales every single day
BY KALLIE COX
Missouri’s first year of (legal) recreational marijuana sales brought record-breaking profits and criminal justice reforms to the state.
The state said yes to Amendment 3 legalizing adult recreational use in
November 2022, with 53 percent of voters approving. Sales began in December of that year.
Voters’ decision to legalize recreational marijuana led to $1.3 billion in sales, making Missouri one of the 10

ZACHARY LINHARES
largest for the cannabis industry, according to MoCannTrade, Missouri’s Cannabis Trade Organization. This means dispensaries have sold roughly $4 million of weed every day.
“The actual sales of adult-use cannabis in Missouri have really been remarkable, outpacing pretty much anybody’s expectations,” says John Payne, a member of MoCannTrade’s board of directors. “There’s really been quite strong demand and that’s good to see. A lot of people are getting to work, getting jobs, and Missouri businesses are doing well.”
Most notably though, last year brought historic criminal justice reform to Missouri by automatically expunging 100,000 non-violent marijuana convictions. Missouri is the first state to expunge these convictions automatically and uses a program paid for by taxes on cannabis sales, according to MoCannTrade.
“No other state has expunged that many that quickly. So that’s really remarkable,” Payne says.
Good Times
Chase Cookson, an instructor and cannabis researcher with Saint Louis University, describes the first year of recreational use in Missouri as “mind blowing.”
“The fact that we exceeded a billion dollars is… I mean that blew my mind,” Cookson says. “I definitely did not expect us to exceed a billion dollars in the first year. I really didn’t expect us to exceed a billion dollars in the first few years. And so the fact that we did in this first year is just, it’s pretty crazy.”
The folks who are currently working in the cannabis industry are uniquely positioned for success, Cookson says.
MoCannTrade says the number of people employed by the industry in Missouri has increased from 9,383 to 20,000 people. And that number doesn’t include ancillary employees who are
peripherally involved in the trade as researchers, teachers and consultants like both Payne and Cookson.
That’s nearly double the cannabis jobs that existed prior to the legalization of recreational use, making the industry one of the state’s biggest job creators, according to MoCannTrade.
And since cannabis is now being taxed, the state’s coffers have benefited as well.
Taxes being charged include 4 percent paid to the state for medical use and 6 percent for recreational use with the option for local municipalities to add a 3 percent local tax to sales (many did, and in some cases counties have stacked their own 3 percent as well).
Under the amendment legalizing recreational use, tax revenue first goes to carry out the provisions required of the amendment. After that, it’s used to expunge the criminal records of those with marijuana convictions, and then any remaining funds are divided into three categories: the public defender system, the Missouri Veterans Commission and drug treatment services, according to the Missouri Budget Project.
Since the state’s medical marijuana program began in 2019, the industry has brought in $150 million in taxes, according to the Missouri Independent
A Few Hiccups
The record-breaking year wasn’t without its rough patches.
At least one tax grab by a local government entity may have been unconstitutional, a pair of lawsuits claim. Filed against St. Louis County and Buchanan counties and the Missouri Department of Revenue, the suits allege that “dozens” of counties are illegally stacking local 3 percent taxes on top of a municipal 3 percent tax in violation of Article 14 of the Missouri Constitution.
“St. Louis County and others are
CANNABIS GUIDE 2024 | RIVERFRONT TIMES 9
violating this by placing a second 3 percent tax on marijuana sales occurring within incorporated areas that also happen to be within the county’s boundaries,” MoCannTrade explains. “The lawsuit seeks to overturn this unconstitutional stacking of local adult-use marijuana taxes. If successful, the lawsuit would save Missouri cannabis customers approximately $3 million per month and uphold the will of the voters.” The suits remain pending in court.
In addition to the dispute regarding local taxes, the state’s marijuana microbusiness license program has faced criticism.
These licenses are a provision of Amendment 3 intended to offer a legal entry into the industry for minority business owners and those who may have been directly impacted by the criminalization of marijuana. But Black Missourians have complained that the limits on the program are so great as to keep them from truly competing, because microlicense brands are limited to only selling and purchasing from other Missouri microlicensees.
Beyond that, despite the hopes of lifting Missouri minorities the Missouri Independent has reported that more than half of the applicants came from out of state — and 43 percent of them are connected to just three companies. The Division of Cannabis Regulation said it would revoke 11 of the 48 microlicenses issued in the first round
last fall after determining they didn’t meet eligibility requirements.
“The idea of creating access for smaller players to enter the market is a noble one, if it’s done well,” Cookson says. “My opinion of that particular portion of the adult use amendment is that it was a bone; it was offered up by folks in the industry who wanted to give the appearance of some kind of social equity program as part of the adult use amendment, but without actually risking having true competition.”
Caps on the program, like the 50 plant limit for these small businesses, ensure that it is impossible for them to compete with the prices and selling capacity of larger dispensaries — a source of complaints from Black Missourians who had hoped for a fair shot in the industry.
Despite the obvious flaws with the program, it is unlikely to ever be fixed, Cookson says.
“Our opportunity to set that program up the right way was when we wrote the amendment and we did not do that,” Cookson says. “It’s our collective shame as activists that we have a program that looks like this, and that we let industry essentially write it.”
Even so, Cookson sees a bright future for Missouri’s cannabis industry and says the state can likely expect to exceed last year’s record-breaking profits.
“I don’t see anything on the horizon this year that would slow that down,” Cookson says.

Can’t Fake the Funk
Tree1Four Genetics’ Jay Wills pays homage to a storied St. Louis music venue with Vibe’s Mississippi Nights strain
BY AARON CHILDS
Hailing from St. Louis, where the sounds of live music and the aroma of cannabis intertwine in a classic harmony, a new strain captures the essence of both worlds. Mississippi Nights, cultivated by Vibe Cannabis, is more than just a nod to the legendary music venue that once vibrated with the sounds of future legends. It’s a tribute, a memory encapsulated in the form of a groundbreaking strain by Jay Wills, the visionary behind Tree1Four Genetics. Wills, a St. Louis native and legacy
breeder, first started experimenting with growing cannabis in 1995, driven by a deep-rooted passion for the plant. Before establishing Tree1Four in 2018, Wills’ breeding career had led him from St. Louis to the recreational cannabis market in Oregon — that is, until Missouri legalized medicinal cannabis use.
“The vote went through, and I instantly knew my time there was limited,” Wills says of his decision to leave Oregon and come back home.
12 RIVERFRONT TIMES | CANNABIS GUIDE 2024
Tree1Four Genetics' Jay Wills, center, with Rosin Extraction Manager Max Sadoff and Live Resin Extraction Manager Rob Dunse. AARON CHILDS
About a month later, Wills returned to St. Louis, blessing the city with his extensive knowledge of, and love for, cannabis. Before long he’d developed the Mississippi Nights strain, which combines the distinctive flavors and potent effects of GMO and Tagalongz while paying homage to the storied venue of the same name, where iconic artists like Nirvana, System of a Down, Eminem and Pantera once performed before graduating to selling out stadiums.
It’s also a tribute to Wills’ musical roots, shaped by his parents’ roles in the music industry.
“My dad used to be a roadie and my mom was a booking agent,” Wills says, sharing that his first concert experience was with his parents at Mississippi Nights to see the Dead Milkmen.
Still, the name didn’t come overnight. Wills says that aspect of the strain was a challenge, and it took more than a year for him to decide what to call it. But when the right name finally occurred to him, it hit him like a bolt of lightning.
“I was thinking, ‘This is just some gnarly, grungy, rotten funk,’” Wills explains. “There’s nothing more gnarly or funky than Mississippi Nights.”
Although Wills and Tree1Four had established the strain as a cornerstone of his genetic library three years prior, it was the partnership with Vibe that elevated Mississippi Nights to the next level by making it available to a broader recreational audience. Among the six standout strains developed by Wills and Vibe, which also include Cutiez, RKO, Liquid Sunshine, Peanut Butter Parfait and Carvers, Mississippi Nights holds a special place, already earning the title of a “forever strain” alongside such Vibe classics as Gelato and Chem Reserve.
My introduction to Mississippi Nights began with its rosin form, which was featured in the inaugural Connoisseur Pack: Rosin Edition by Cannabis
Cult (which, full disclosure, is my company). In this blind taste test competition, Mississippi Nights emerged victorious, securing the championship for Vibe with its distinctive funky scent and superior flavor. So naturally, I was excited to try out the flower form of the strain, and it did not disappoint.
Purchased from Feel State in Florissant for $39, the eighth contained one large, trichome-covered bud accompanied by a few smaller nugs, all fully embodying the strain’s quality of exceptional rosin production. The relaxation and stress relief it provided were unparalleled, a testament to Wills and Vibe Cannabis’ dedication to selecting unique and potent genetics. Just like its namesake, it had a loud and funky feel to it, qualities that come through in both the aroma and flavor, with a hint of sweetness on the exhale.
To sum up the experience — one that I highly recommend and plan to revisit very soon — Mississippi Nights is not just a strain. It’s a piece of St. Louis’s heart and history, a tribute to the music that raised us and the cannabis that brings us together.
When I asked Wills to encapsulate what he aims to achieve with his brand, he responded with heartfelt simplicity: “MO love.” This expression is well exemplified by Mississippi Nights, reflecting Wills’ deep-rooted affection for Missouri and its cannabis culture. It’s a great strain for anyone who appreciates the art of cannabis cultivation and the profound relaxation it can bring, an homage that ensures the spirit of the iconic venue will continue to live on within the cannabis community and beyond. In bringing it to life, Wills has not only developed a standout product in the competitive cannabis market but also revitalized a treasured piece of St. Louis heritage, evoking nostalgic memories while inviting connoisseurs to indulge.

The 11 Best Dispensaries for Very Specific St. Louis Stoners
You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes (and consult our handy guide) you just might find the dispensary you need
For Those Who Know the Nose Knows
Feel State, 444 Howdershell Road, Florissant
One annoyance about the commercial marijuana market is that too often the flower comes prepackaged, making it impossible to smell the product before you purchase. It’s not an ideal situation, especially if you’re a picky type — the nose knows, as they say. Luckily for north county stoners, the fine folks at Feel State in Florissant keep jars of the products on hand at the front of each register, enabling you to verify the smell of an online purchase and also to check out other brands’ products that you may decide to purchase in the future. And although this dispensary is a bit of a hike for most in the metro area, its helpful staff makes the trip worth your while. Brands on hand include Local Cannabis, Sinse, Proper, Vivid, Vibe, CODES and many more. Visit feelstate.com for a full selection.
For Those Who Love Digital Scales
Blue Sage Cannabis Deli, 1015 McCausland Avenue
Blue Sage Cannabis Deli is for the
stoners who prefer to see their flower weighed out deli-style rather than coming prepackaged. The Missouri-owned and operated dispensary is a subsidiary of Show-Me Organics, which is also responsible for cannabis brands including Vivid, Buoyant Bob and Missouri’s Own, the latter of which is well-known for its tasty (but sadly endangered) cannabis-infused Red Hot Riplets. Blue Sage also has infused cooking oil, chocolates and sodas, as well as some CBD chews for your pup (nothing like getting high with your dog). Though they have a fun selection of edibles, their top sellers are their deli-style flower, Vivid pre-rolls and solventless products. Blue Sage also has daily specials as well as various discounts for students, faculty, veterans, first-timers, industry folks, seniors and those with low income. Blue Sage is open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visit bluesagecanna.com to learn more.

Swade Cannabis, multiple locations including 6166 Delmar Boulevard
Maybe you find consuming cannabis to be akin to a sacred act, or maybe you’re just feeling nostalgic for the days when you’d sneak away from your parents’ side at mass to smoke weed with the window cracked in the church’s bathroom — whatever the case may be, Swade’s Delmar location has got you covered. The Loop dispensary is housed in a renovated church building, making it one of the more unique places to purchase weed in the area. That seems to be part of a larger trend for Swade, whose flagship Grove location — itself a beautiful space, if not quite as holy — was named by Architectural Digest as one of the country’s 12 Most Stylish Dispensaries in 2021. In addition to its friendly and helpful budtenders, Swade also has a touchscreen display on its sales floor through which you can peruse its menu in peace before deciding what to purchase. To that we say a hearty “amen.” Swade is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Check out their full menu at swadecannabis.com.
For Those Who Like a Bit of Streetwear Style With Their Weed
Cookies, 11088 New Halls Ferry Road, Florissant
Befitting a brand that was founded by a rapper, Cookies oozes style. The Florissant dispensary’s line of streetwear apparel — whose designs often riff
on popular St. Louis entities like the Cardinals, Blues, Battlehawks or Billikens — is nearly as in-demand as its top-shelf selection of cannabis goods. In fact, in some locations on the West Coast, where founder Gilbert Anthony Milam Jr. (a.k.a. Berner) is based, the clothing is actually the focus of the entire store, and Berner’s designs have made the brand a hot one in streetwear circles. On the cannabis front, Cookies carries everything from Flora Farms to In the Flow to Vibe to Camp in addition to its top-shelf house brand, and the shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. You may step inside in search of some weed, but you also may walk out with some fresh drip. Have a look at all the cannabis on offer, as well as Cookies’ current apparel options, at cookiessaintlouis.com.

COME AND GET IT: A SELECTION OF HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR TIRELESS FIELD TESTING IN THE CITY (YOU'RE WELCOME, STL!)
Honeybee’s Infused PB&J Chocolate Bar
BY MARY JANE BAKER
I was that kid. The kid who ate PB&J sandwiches for lunch every day in elementary school. My parents would do what they could to spice up my diet, but the only variance I’d allow was the occasional banana stuffed into my sandwich of choice. My grandma would even try to scare me by saying peanuts would start growing out of my ears if I didn’t stop eating so much peanut butter.
I eventually grew out of this phase. My love for a good PB&J sandwich never totally faded, however. So I was excited when Proper Brands announced its chef-created line of edibles, Honeybee Edibles, was debuting an infused peanut butter and jelly chocolate bar. Honeybee Edibles comes from the mind of Director of Culinary Dave Owens. The chef spent more than a

decade as the chief chocolatier and vice president of taste at Bissinger’s before joining Proper’s team. The man knows his stuff. And if the peanut butter and jelly chocolate bar was anywhere near as good as Honeybee’s gumdrops, it was bound to be as delicious as it was effective.
The bar is available in different potencies, from 100 milligrams of THC to 300 milligrams of THC per bar. When I went to a dispensary a few weeks after the PB&J bar’s launch, a Proper Cannabis budtender informed me that the dispensary only had medium potency, 125 milligrams of THC per bar. So that’s what I went with. It cost $35.
Proper sent me away with my treat in a thick, black bag; it felt hefty, the bar inside weighing a pound or so. Its box was white, red and gold. Unboxing the PB&J bar felt like Christmas. I truly felt like a little kid unwrapping a gift as I eagerly peeled away a stubborn sticker on the package to get to the good stuff inside.
Once open, I found 10 individually cut squares that were stored in a plastic container. Even with the plastic intact, the scent of peanut butter and something sweet wafted through.
It was 9 p.m. at this point, and I just wanted a quick way to fall asleep before work the next day. In Owens’ honor, I whipped out a chef’s knife and cut one of the bars in half. The cross-section showed a generous layer of peanut butter about a quarter of an inch thick — but, to my horror, no jelly. But the chocolate-to-peanut-butter ratio seemed ideal, slightly more than that of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.
Down the hatch, the chocolate was extremely velvety and melted quickly. It was sweet but didn’t have the overly saccharine taste that some chocolate edibles can have. The salty creaminess of the peanut butter provided the perfect contrast. If it wasn’t for the
potency of each square, 12.5 milligrams, I would have happily eaten the whole thing and then some.
A soft high settled over me like a warm blanket about an hour later. I drifted off to sleep, with plans to try a whole piece at another time.
A few days later, a friend and I decided to do it right. We gathered our favorite munchies from Schnucks, rented The Da Vinci Code (in retrospect, a terrible movie to watch whilst stoned) and set off for a night of weed and peanut butter bliss.
My friend was as disappointed with the lack of jelly as I. We looked at the packaging, only to learn that the quintessential fruit flavor of a PB&J was supposed to be supplied by strawberry jelly-infused milk chocolate. The taste, according to the ingredients listed on the back of the box, came from freezedried strawberry powder. I had looked forward to Owens’ jelly, especially since Honeybee’s gumdrops are made from “the most flavorful real fruit purees from around the globe,” according to its website, and I had hoped to see something of that in this bar’s jelly.
Even so, the “jelly” taste was pleasant and brought back flashbacks of drinking strawberry milk from cardboard cartons as a kid. Both strawberry and peanut butter tastes lingered in my mouth, so the essence of a PB&J was there. Neither I nor my friend detected any weed flavor.
Overall, Honeybee’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Chocolate Bar brought a nice, consistent high. It could’ve just been the dosage or the company, but I felt calm and content. My friend, on the other hand, was on the floor for two hours uttering “time is bullshit” and “that’s so fucking funny” when no one was saying a word. So as with any edible, know your dosage.
And resist the urge to eat more. Because with this bar, you’ll want to gobble down the whole thing.

Sinse’s Hoodoo Strain
BY AARON CHILDS
As an avid consumer of cannabis, I’ve had my eye on the Swade Select strain releases for some time, and since I’ve somehow managed to find myself in an arrangement wherein I can occasionally offload the cost of my cannabis consumption onto St. Louis’ premier alt-weekly (thanks, RFT !), I recently decided to splurge on the top-shelf release. The Hoodoo strain caught my attention not just because it has a cool name, but more so because of its unique lineage (more on that in a moment).
Unfortunately, when I finally decided to take the plunge, the Swade location nearest to me was sold out, so I checked online to see if there was any Hoodoo left. Luckily the Grove dispensary had a few eighths left, so I placed my order
and drove the extra 10 minutes to Manchester. Because of the strain’s classification as a top-shelf release, Swade was only selling Hoodoo as eighths. It set me back $48 before tax, about $8 more than a regular eighth. Apart from Swade, Hoodoo can also be found at other dispensaries under the Sinse brand name.
The strain’s lineage intrigued me because it was actually gifted to Sinse’s former cultivation lead, Morgan McGovern, all the way back in 2018 in Denver. The unique strain is a collaboration between two legendary Virginia breeders, combining Dominion Skunk from Dominion Seed Company and Crossroad Chem from Lucky Dog Seed Company.

The Hoodoo strain from Swade deserves its top-shelf status.
ACE GLOBS
There are no feminized seeds, so growing this plant is not for the faint of heart. After receiving the gift, McGovern was waiting for the right phenotype hunt to bring a very special strain to a special market. It was released as a limited collaboration between the two breeders, which led to its top-shelf superiority. Needless to say, I was even more excited to try Hoodoo after learning this.
Upon opening the Swade Select box, I saw a minimalist, sleek jar with “Swade” in gold and the standard “3.5g” underneath. In the jar, there were about six nicely trimmed buds that looked and smelled equally incredible. You could even see that a lot of the buds’ trichomes were coated with resin, which gave the typically ice-clear outgrowths a golden tint. Right away, I got hit with a delicious smell that was heavy on the chem notes, with hints of citrus and herbal tea. I broke down about two nugs, and my fingers were absolutely drenched in kief and resin. After rolling up a decent-sized joint, I stepped outside to enjoy the nice weather while smoking.
The THC count was just under 25 percent, and the total terpene count was 2.58 percent. The most prominent terpene was caryophyllene, with limonene and myrcene being the next two dominant terpenes. The joint smoked surprisingly smooth for how potent the strain was. And Hoodoo’s flavor was certainly one of the highlights for me, as it tasted like a pink Starburst washed down with a citrus herbal tea, with the chem taste lingering as well.
Shortly after smoking, I noticed that I was pretty alert and stayed that way through the high. It was not an overwhelming or anxious alertness either, like you might get with some sativa strains. Soon after the alertness kicked in, the body high started to intensify.
This hit me like a true hybrid, because my body did not feel the same

level of alertness whatsoever. For instance, I’d slept on my back weird a couple of nights before, but after smoking the Hoodoo joint, I couldn’t feel much pain. In fact, I could barely feel my legs at all, but I was feeling groovy regardless.
I have a higher tolerance than the average smoker, so the amount you smoke may vary, but for me, a joint was the perfect amount to enjoy a full body high and remain alert at the same time with no anxiety. Due to the potency of this strain, I can imagine some people needing only a couple puffs to feel it.
The Hoodoo strain has a beautiful appearance, a unique aroma and a savory flavor profile. In my eyes (and lungs), this is a top-notch option for those looking for the most potent strains on the Missouri market, whether your tolerance is high or low.
It’s a great daytime strain and works for anyone dealing with pain. If you’re a fan of hybrids that provide an alert effect mentally in combination with an intense body high, then Hoodoo is worth the splurge and deserves to be on your list.

Proper Cannabis’ Black Maple #22 Live Rosin
BY GRAHAM TOKER
Ever since I started smoking weed, hash has felt like an ancient, forbidden door. The first time I ever tried it, I felt like I was starting up the final challenge on Legends of the Hidden Temple and I upset Olmec.
More recently, I’ve taken a modern academic approach filled with podcasts. A recent takeaway from an episode revolved around the language used to describe hash and its numerous subgenres based on how the trichomes were extracted from the plant and then processed. When browsing a menu for a product to review, I found there were nine different categories of hash concentrates.
The last time I bought hash at a dispensary, there was something lost in translation and I wound up with a
solvent extraction. I’m not trying to yuck anyone’s yum, but BHO just ain’t it for me. Instead I’ve been riding a newer wave of interest for solventless extractions — just the plant and water and pressure, baby, all you need.
I settled on some rosin, which uses a marijuana plant that is freshly harvested and then broken down to the buds and frozen. The frozen plant material is then “washed” in a cold water and ice bath, a solventless extraction, and the trichomes are separated from the plant material, then dried in a freeze dryer before being pressed between warmed metal plates. Voilà, that’s rosin. If you didn’t press the trichomes after they dried, you’d have yourself full-melt bubble hash. That’s how I understand it, anyway, but I’m sure some would

argue I’m wrong.
I scanned all my options on Proper Cannabis’ site and placed an order of the Black Maple #22 live rosin for pickup. I went to Proper’s Crestwood location to pick up my order, and as usual, indecision began to immediately poke holes in my purchasing plan. Looking at the menu while I checked in, the Dark Rainbow live rosin caught my eye, and that interest was seconded by the front desk attendant. I’m a longtime faithful GMO smoker, so a cross between GMO and Rainbow Belts F1 is right up my alley.
When I got buzzed to the back, I asked if I could change my order. Unfortunately they were sold out of Dark Rainbow, so I decided to stick to my guns and followed through on the Black Maple #22. I’ve enjoyed this strain/cultivar as flower, and I particularly like the gassy sweetness it brings. This batch of its rosin form clocked in at 89.5 percent total cannabinoids with 5.1 percent total terpenes. I double-checked with the budtender that I was indeed getting a solventless product, and she assured me that it was copacetic. At the register, I cashed in a penny preroll coupon and also got a package of the Goodnight Dreamberry gummies, a low 2.5 milligram each dose of THC, CBD and CBN to aid sleep. All in, I was at $68.
I’m not sure if this was a snafu, but my first dab session with the Black Maple didn’t finish great. I started with a dab in my Puffco Proxy on the green setting (the second to lowest temperature setting). The first hit was flavorful, with the familiar sweet gas profile I’ve enjoyed in the past. When I went to clean everything at the end of this smoking session, I saw a bit of residue in the freshly cleaned bowl that I had to clean out again with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol.
I haven’t experienced this with other solventless rosins I’ve tried at the same
temperature setting, so I wanted to try again on the blue, or lowest, temp setting. The blue temp dabs on the lower Puffco setting, and subsequent dabs on a rig between 520 and 555 degrees, didn’t leave residue like the medium-temp vaporizer hits. So that was nice to see.
The effects I incurred over the course of smoking the one gram rosin jar were fairly clear headed, but with bouts of giggles and mellow relaxation. I enjoyed it during the daytime and felt that it didn’t interfere too much with my ability to get off the couch after smoking. After one session with the Black Maple, I wandered around a grocery store and was mesmerized by some dragon fruit. I had to get it for a future snack.
Another session was my first smoke of the day. I had a dab of the Black Maple around 550 degrees on my glass rig and it smacked my face off pretty hard. I got a big rush of lemon-lime flavor on the inhale, with additional gas and candy notes in the same sphere of flavors and terpenes I had previously with the concentrate. The rosin also had a nice sheen after resting postwhip, accenting the rosin like butter on a biscuit. I didn’t let a little coughing get in the way of indulging in the rosin again for a second dab closer to 525 degrees. I didn’t get the pronounced citrus terps on the lower temp dab but it was a nice smooth smoke session to start off a day.
Proper’s rosin checked a lot of boxes that I personally am looking for with a solventless rosin: great color, clean burn, nice flavor and a greased-up post-whip appearance indicating solid terpene content. If you’re looking for a great place to start, Proper has a wide range of strains/cultivars available as rosin, so if there’s a flavor profile you’re comfortable with, they probably have it. Give hash a chance, flower smokers. Or whatever you wanna call it.

CODES’ Blueberry Gooey Butter Gummies
BY ZOOIE GREEN
Having moved to St. Louis not so long ago, I only recently learned gooey butter cake is a St. Louis delicacy. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved gooey butter cake — I just never looked into its history. So when CODES announced a new St. Louis-flavored
gummy dubbed Blueberry Gooey Butter Cake, I immediately knew I had to get my hands on it.
CODES describes the gummies’ flavor as “rich, sweet, and creamy with an infusion of fresh blueberry flavor” and with a 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC,

resulting in a “soothing indica gummy.”
It was 8 p.m. on a Thursday when I decided it was as good a time as any to see if the edibles lived up to my pastry expectations. Each package comes with six 20-milligram gummies, each scored for easy portioning. I was cautioned to start with one-fourth of a gummy (5 milligrams), so I did. Taking this small of a piece, it was hard to really taste the flavor. I waited an hour and felt nothing. But I have a rather high tolerance.
The next night, I decided I was really going to give it a go. At about 9 p.m., I decided to take three-fourths of the gummy, or 15 milligrams. (Basically what was left over from the night before). This time, the flavor hit. After getting past the sour sugar coating, I tasted blueberry, followed by a hint of vanilla, giving it that cake flavor. It definitely masked the taste of the marijuana, which I prefer. But it didn’t give me that full-on cake flavor I was hoping for.
Sweet tooth not entirely satisfied, I decided to make some cookies for when the munchies hit. So I grabbed some prepared chocolate chip cookie dough, preheated the oven and prepped the cookies. I then turned on season five, episode two of Seinfeld — “The Puffy Shirt.”
Around 10:25 p.m., I felt the high starting to kick in — a calming and relaxing effect, probably enhanced by the edible’s 1:1 CBD to THC ratio. But there’s a dark side to that chill: As I was relaxing and watching my show, I realized I forgot about the cookies, and they were probably burned to a crisp. I ran to the kitchen — only to find I never put them in the oven. Ten minutes later, I finally had some sweet treats to quash the hunger pangs.
Thus satisfied, I felt my eyes getting heavy and my body relaxing as I read a text from my friend who lives in North Carolina. He said, “I’m watching a race

in St. Louis.” Being high, I thought he was actually in St. Louis and got so excited. He informed me that he was not, so I told him he’d dashed my “high” hopes. That’s when I knew I was peaking. I thought “high hopes” was the funniest thing I could have ever said and started FaceTiming other friends so I could share my brilliance. After my high shenanigans, I could feel my relaxation turn to tiredness, so I gave my undivided attention to Seinfeld until I drifted away. And let me tell you as a person who has a hard time staying asleep, I slept the entire night.
I would say the CODES gummy is relatively similar to other gummies I’ve tried in the past as far as its effects go, although the blueberry gooey cake flavor is definitely a fun twist. But if you’re looking for that true gooey butter cake rich flavor, stick to the bakery section. Though these gummies are good, they don’t quite take the cake. Overall, these CODES’ gummies provided me with a nice, calm and relaxing full-body experience. They were just lacking the sweet cake flavor I was hoping for. But if you’re looking for something new to try, I definitely recommend them.
