CROSS BOWS GUIDE

Crossbows, much more recently than bows, were invented “only” 2,400 years ago. Their development was parallel to that of the bow and they gained their own niche of use. Crossbows are much more slow to be fired, but far more powerful and precise and therefore they were used especially for defense purposes when a shelter was available for cocking. Even if both the tools are designed to shoot arrows, a crossbow is closer in concept and use to firearms. That is why the first contact with a crossbow is easy and intuitive and it is easier to have good results in terms of precision from the start. It is indeed its precision and effectiveness (especially in compound models) that made the crossbow gain a leading role as a hunting tool, in particular in the US where it has its own hunting season.

Compound crossbow Just like compound bows compound crossbows are the most performing models. Compound models are all designed for hunting but they can also be used for recreational target shooting. Prices start from 200 €.

Traditional crossbow The simpler structure usually results in lower prices for traditional crossbows, which are at the same time more devoted to leisure activities. For those who are looking for high quality products there are also high end models. Prices start from 100 €. Though in many countries crossbows are equal to bows, that is, sports equipment that can be sold and kept freely, the laws, however, could vary. In addition to restrictions on sales or possession there could also be requirements on transport. We recommend the customer to inquire on the local laws in this respect before buying a crossbow. Regardless of the specific laws we suggest you buy a crossbow case when buying a crossbow. This will allow you to carry it safely and to safeguard it from damage during transport. A crossbow is not to be considered a toy. It is a potentially dangerous piece of equipment and therefore one must pay attention and follow the safety rules.

• What distance can a crossbow bolt reach? Crossbows have different draw weights and perform differently and it is not possible to give a definite reply. Generally speaking, you can say that a crossbow has a good precision up to a distance of 50-60m, beyond this distance it becomes much more difficult. Regarding the maximum carry, you can say that a crossbow with a draw weight of 150lbs or higher can have a carry longer than 400 m. This means you should never aim the crossbow upward without having a good protection behind the target. • What’s the maximum power of a crossbow? As discussed here above crossbows can be essentially divided in two categories: traditional and compound. Compound crossbows dissipate only a small part of the stored energy but they do not exceed 200 lbs of draw weight. Traditional crossbows instead, have a different way of storing and returning the energy which disperses a large part of it. Traditional crossbows are available with draw weights up to 225 lbs. It’s important to consider how the “power expressed” that is, the ability to transmit the bolt a certain energy, is not only linked to the draw weight but to the quantity of energy stored and to the part dispersed when shot. A good parameter for the evaluation of the crossbow is then the speed of the bolt that is measured in feet per second (FPS). • Are crossbows effective tools for hunting? After saying that crossbow hunting is not allowed everywhere and that you have to check first if the law of the State where you want to go hunting allows that, we must say that crossbows are born as hunting tools and in the US they have their own hunting season. They are used to hunt every kind of prey. • What kind of precision does a crossbow have? The precision of the crossbow depends not only on the crossbow itself but it is obvious that a higher quality product, with a better trigger mechanism, will have an intrinsic precision higher than that of a first price product. Generally speaking, we can say that a quality crossbow with a well tuned scope shot by an experienced shooter will give a 10 cm group at 40 meters. • Can a crossbow stay cocked and if so, how long? To stay cocked and armed with a draw weight of 150- 175 lbs gives the materials a high stress, but the best models of compound crossbows designed for hunting can stay cocked even for hours. • Is it possible to buy and carry a crossbow freely? Modern crossbows are often considered sports equipment, and they can therefore be bought freely. Restrictions can be set for transportation or for other specific activities. It is important to check the local laws.
