The company background...
In the 1930s a young Walter Gehmann started being noticed on the range. He was a pain to fellow competitors in small-bore and full-bore rifle, winning competitions to national level. Seeking further improvements in his scores he sought to develop shooting equipment of his day. As early as 1936 he designed his first precision rearsight assembly. The following year he developed the first pair of dedicated shooting glasses with a moveable lens holder. In 1939 he came up with Germany´s first target-shooting jacket, a shooting sling, boots and a specialised glove. Walter Gehmann founder
1949 gave birth to the company name. Although the first 40 years were steered by its founder Walter, son Markus came to the firm and then assisted his father for some 10 years - before taking over.
Returning to Walter Gehmann´s career: it was to see him achieve a world champion-ship, followed by his first rearsight iris in 1953 - with which he won no less than seven German championships. In 1956 came his first foresight iris. Two years later he produced his first colour filter unit for a rearsight. A little-known fact about Gehmann's founder was his talent for aiding design and development of the other well-known manufacturers in their pioneering days. Patenting the Mauser 66 action, designing the Anschutz Match 54 action and assisting design and production of the Feinwerkbau 65, 150, 300 and their small-bore rifle were just a few... he also carried out development work for Walther. Herr Gehmann Snr. now has more than one hundred patents to his credit and can still be found behind his desk. Some of his best ideas never got to us, unfortunately. Two examples being an electronically controlled iris that automatically adjusted to ambient light and a twin eyesight combined prism enabling the rifle shooter to use both eyes for sighting. An inquiring mind forever explores avenues of possibility though not all will reach maturity. More recently Gehmann witnessed the introduction of what is now the world’s leading pre-charged match air weapon -and chosen as Morini´s major distributor.

The 162.E pistol, a revolution in its day, sent rivals scampering for similar ideas, though no-one has yet manufactured an equivalent. This got complimented by the handpump at the same time as development of the first lockable rearsight. Installation of works programmes for continued improvement of irises, sights, clothing, control equipment and their future adaptability, service warranty and customer cost were put in place at the turn of the century. The future looks bright.

.. in the 40’s Walter Gehmann continued developing equipment we now all assume to be common-place on the range. One of these products was a dedicated target shooting jacket with the now familiar non-slip shoulder pad. The family business name was born and became the company we know today.
... 1953 saw development and manufacture of their first rear-sight iris. This iris and other versions that were patented later gave rise to Gehmann’s unique ability today of giving a 30-year guarantee on any one of their rearsight irises that’s progress!
... 1956 led to the first foresight iris - from then on the product range just grew and grew. There is now just about every item we see on the range - from the shooter to the competiton controller, the weapons and clothing, the targets and the smiles!
... 1997 saw the registration of our latest iris patent following non-stop development in design, engineering and materials. We made, what was for us, one of our biggest decisions which was to exceed any other manufacturer's standards by leading the field.

SIGHTS we are an innovative manufacturer and supplier but also support historically proven designs this came about by listening to customer opinion and producing products which meet their needs Our system of rearsight irises is entirely based upon our patented fixed-seat iris design constructed with tempered stainless steel leaves attached to the iris body. All our irises are built upon this superior principle and all additional features connected to and within our iris combinations benefit from it. As a result of our patent the peep hole seen by the shooter is absolutely circular throughout the full range of adjustments. Additionally our irises can be cleaned with pressure air without risk of damage. All internal and, where used, external black surfaces are manufactured to give absolutely minimal light reflection - another cause of sight picture loss. The reason the iris is so important to the shooter is it enables the shooter to achieve an extended depth of optical field - necessary to clearly see both the foresight and the target picture at the same time. Our design no longer utilises the old iris favoured by all other manufacturers. The old design, if accidently dropped or badly mishandled, may move within the iris body and be repositioned without the shooters` knowledge - impossible with our patent.

POLARISATION FILTERS
Deviating light rays originating from the bull or surrounding white, caused by high intensity light, result in a poor or deteriorating sight picture. Due to the properties of polarised filters and the fact that quartz grains lay on the filter in one direction it is possible with a single filter to absorb the reflected beams. By introducing and overlaying a second filter at varying angles to the first filter the incoming light intensity can be reduced up to 90% of its original value. Thus by using one or two filters (or none at all if this appropriate) one bit of sighting equipment allows you control of one of the most critical causes of all sighting problems.

By maximizing space in a very small sight Gehmann have been able to develop their patented six-colour filter and also a filter housing with 12 individual colours. Combining 2 filter wheels of 12 colours a total of 48 colours can be achieved with our poly-colour filters: 512MC, 564, 568, 568MC, 545MC and 546MC. This means improved target clarity can be achieved when shooting indoors or outdoors under artificial or natural light conditions. All filters are precision-made and polished optically flat. about our iris filter diopter production These are complicated products embodying complicated components. To understand this, let‘s look at an example, say 546 MC. Constructed from 81 parts it uses best quality aluminium to give exceptionally light weight but an ability to be machined well. Our colour filters are optically flat glass within metal plates for maximum wear-life and our iris of spring steel using our patented centre pressure-plate system. We explained that this gives our perfect sphere. We also designed the whole unit to be field strippable for cleaning. All of this work going to just one of our units so it is good enough to carry our 30 year guarantee - free!!

sights 579 CLS, the adaptors and their use Generally the first thing shooters notice about their eyesight deterioration is the target picture clarity suddenly becomes fuzzy or appears to move around like a dancing ball. Examination by your opthalmologist will accurately measure and diagnose your symptoms giving you the opportunity to do something about them. Should you suffer from one of the more common problems of myopia (short-sightedness), hypermetropia (long-sightedness) or astigmatism - we can cure them all with one unit - 579. This is produced in two standard factory forms, both carrying our 1.5x magnification correction diopter, one incorporating our iris and 6-colour filter system (570-579) and the other incorporating just the iris (530-579). 579 can also be purchased on its own for retro-fit to our irises with the use of adaptors 579-I to 579-III, as illustrated below. There is also consideration of day-to-day variations in your general health as a consequence of heart rate, blood pressure, air quality, stress levels, tiredness and work. Quick and easy compensation for these factors is achieved by simple manual adjustments of 579. These have absolutely no effect on the accuracy of any existing sight settings - which means the immediate benefit of this unique piece of equipment can be appreciated at once. 579 is designed to attach to existing irises and provide astigmatic correction. It will be necessary to fully or partly dismantle your existing iris in order to attach it - this is done with the u-spanner originally provided with your iris. Once dismantled you will require one or other of our adaptor plates - illustrated below. All three adaptors slide inside 579`s body and are simply locked in place with three small allen screws. The adaptor plate is internally threaded to allow both items to then be fitted to your iris. This is done using your existing iris‘s front thread with the exception of 500, 501.MC, 510, and 510-S which require our 577 adaptor thread due to their unique construction. In the case of attaching 579 to a straightforward iris such as 550 - 569 there is nothing else to do. In the case of attaching 579 to a straightforward iris (as above) but also wishing to have a fuller level of sight correction it is necessary to introduce either our 50309 (black) or 50300.MC (silver). Instructions for this are included with 579 when bought new. In the case of attaching 579 to a unit already containing a 1.5x diopter the procedure is similar to that of the straightforward iris mentioned at the beginning...

570-579 CLS vari-focal astigmatic iris what it is and how it works what it is... Until now shooters suffering from astigmatism have been obliged to use shooter‘s spectacle frames with their associated cost and need for an optician‘s prescription. 570-579 puts an end to this. It also has the advantage of being fully adjustable so eyes good for one setting at one time of day which may have deteriorated or changed at another can be instantly improved. The added benefit this sight gives you is even as your eyes age, improve or deteriorate over years, extremely quick and simple adjustments can be made in no more than a couple of minutes.

The basis of the sight is our 570 assembly comprising 510‘s iris which is infinitely adjustable from 0.5 to 3.0mm, our 6 colour filter ring and the 1.5 x magnifying diopter with -4.5 to +4.5 correction. Placed in the heart of these components is the 579 astigmatic unit with a registered design.
how it works... In order to gain maximum benefit from this complicated unit there are set-up procedures to follow which are listed below. These are carried out using our ray diagram placed at a nominal 10 metre distance. This should be clearly seen as a symmetrical design with equal length and thickness radius lines once all settings have been correctly aligned.
setting up ‘Sphere‘ (1) This is set up by rotating the milled front ring until the sight picture is slightly blurred or fuzzy then reversing the direction of rotation until the picture is absolutely clear. This is easiest achieved with the iris fully open to 3.0mm and none of the colour filters across the hole.
setting up ‘Axis‘ (2) This is set by aligning the 0° - 180° collar with the V datum mark on the main body of the iris nearest your eye. The setting should be in accordance with your most recent eye test prescription - or if this is not possible - turned until the clarity of the picture seen through the iris set to 3.0mm is as clear as you get it. Positioning the collar is achieved by first unscrewing the three small allen screws which then allows the body of the unit to be rotated into position. After optimum clarity is once again achieved the three allen screws are re-tightened.
setting up ‘Cylinder‘ (3) This is done by fine-tuning the twin levers on their ratchets. Whichever movement is made with one must be matched by opposite movement of its twin. View the ray design once more and make final setting of the two until the complete picture is both clear and balanced.

Having arrived at what may seem a perfect sight picture it may still be possible to gain small improvements by yet more fine-tuning. This requires patience. The spherical collar adjuster can be rotated anti-clockwise again until the picture is blurring then rotated back clockwise until really sharp. The axis was set and locked by you earlier but try unscrewing the three screws again and using minute rotations of the axis body in either direction. If your sight changes for better or worse with time then micro-adjustment of axis are possible by moving both levers the same way - different to the method used for setting cylinder, above. Once these steps are complete viewing the diagram and one or other slight movement of the levers may give that final step needed to gain a 100% improvement on what you saw before. perfection - at what a price It has long been our goal to manufacture a precision rearsight designed to enter the market at as little money as possible. Due to the standards we set ourselves and the costs involved in high quality precision engineering - we were always fighting an uphill battle. Fortunately for us, over time, world engineering machinery has improved markedly and the cost of those machines reduced due to competitive world markets. This made it possible for us to consider how best we might bring the two together in order to achieve our goal. We decided to keep manufacture local, utilise materials and engineering techniques at as little on-cost as possible and so have worked both together to come up with our brand new 590 sight above. Extremely adaptable for all target rifle shootings whether in the garden, on the farm, down at the club or at international competition. It has a remarkable 1.5mm bullet shift at 50 metres for every click of the big elevation and windage knobs, the iris thread is universal and permanently held in a controlled position by a powerfully loaded diagonal spring and piston. The base is as short as we can get it whilst ensuring it remains strong enough to be a solid platform - and the clamping crossscrews of stainless steel give a lifetime`s service. External and internal finishes are non-reflective matt black both for practicality and aesthetic appeal. all rearsights suffer from backlash on their threads over time and with use which originally arose at manufacture through machining tolerances. This allows positional movement of the moving surfaces carrying the iris thread hole and gives rise to its positional movement which directly affects accuracy at each shot - this is exacerbated by further thread micro-movements induced by the action of the rifle which increases this effect, producing erratic and unwanted scores our patent introduced the unique feature of making a sight lockable, so that once set in position it stays that way. This remains the case throughout the full range of elevation and windage adjustments now using larger stainless rods between the moving surfaces and 25% larger base rail clamps for grip - the sight is even better once elevation and windage are adjusted the lever is rotated until the sight body is locked maintaining your settings permanently in place precision machined from solid aluminium and not using casting attractively anodised for prolonged weather protection front and rear threading allows use of an iris on the eye side and an anti-glare tube on the front side micro-precision adjustment gives 1.5mm bullet shift per click at 50m individually numbered

595, 518 & 540 rearsight development Early rearsights were engineered in such a way that with use and over time they developed backlash either on the threads or on moving parts within the assembly. Our remit was to design a complete rearsight with no movement once set, something still not available on any other current production rearsight ! In order to achieve this we started with an aluminium billet machined to extremely fine tolerances. No castings being used for any components. The material had to be impervious to corrosion but also provide extreme quality without any excess weight. Stainless silver steel rollers between adjusting and movable surfaces provided a means by which clamping could be applied to lock all moving parts in place. A simple camming-lever (available on 595 & 518 - 540 uses a heavy spring-system) compresses these parts so that they impinge on the rollers. A quarter turn of the lever is all that is required to secure all settings. A side benefit of this rearsight is the absence of the need to lubricate. The tolerances and materials used make this a thing of the past. Pressure air being all that is needed now and again for removing any dust or dirt. The strong base-clamp system allows attachment to a wide variety of rails and is very smooth and easy to use.

Gehmann SEE-THROUGH rearsightS Developed for the Seoul Olympics the 594 `See-Through´ was used by Malcom Cooper from England as an untried item - he won the Olympic three-position gold medal as a result - nothing more needs to be said. Since then it has become a favourite with shooters of all levels of competition and subsequently won gold in Atlanta. When standing in front of a pane of clear glass you see your own image. This is caused by a property of the glass which obstructs the passage of light. This is normally in the order of a 4% to 10% loss. If we apply this principle to our foresight lens it can be seen we will inevitably lose some of our sight clarity. The latest science has helped us to reduce this. When our special wideband optical coatings are vacuum applied the treated lens immediately allows more light to pass. Historically this gave roughly a 4% improvement with one coating. Increasing these to two or three coats improves this to 8%. A more modern technology still allows the layers to be increased to six where we find light loss is down to 0.5% - a terrific improvement. about our products Gehmann target changers are the most diverse in the market - used at all levels - private, club, international and Olympic competition. They are designed to be trouble free in all theatres of operation with any form of climate. They are easily transported for situations where storage away from the normal installation is desirable and very simply connected-up, ready for service, with a minimum of help. Constructed of steel but weather-proofed, they operate with a minimum of moving parts to eliminate the possibility of malfunction in the course of competiton - reliability being our watchword. Operating from a choice of 12 volts with batteries or 230 volts mains-transformed (110 V / 60 Hz option), in banks of up to six at a time, they may be individually controlled by the shooter at the firing point. Target numbering has I.S.S.F. approval - so with video coverage both scoring and the tension involved can be relayed to and appreciated by spectators. Shooters can benefit from this during practice. Installations can be supplied with drums of cable (that including connectors), or if a more permanent installation is required, hard-wiring plans to customer’s specification. Suitable foundation plans are available if required. Most importantly - these are considered environmental friendly as they trap spent rounds for final disposal.
