Setting Up Camp

Camps can be a wonderful opportunity to add more to your bottom line. In order to have a successful camp program, you’ll want to plan early and sell seats as early as possible. Here are 10 tips to help your camp program be set up for success!

1. Plan Early. Most camp sign ups are posted early in the first quarter of the year. In order to compete, you’ll want your camps posted as early as you can! This also creates a longer time frame in which to fill your seats. 2. Check the Competition. Other PYOPs are not your only competitors. Parents will look at ALL camp options in your area. Looking at how much other camps charge and what their programs offer can help you make decisions on how to structure and price your program to remain competitive. 3. Set a Budget. Include everything you’ll need to keep summer camps running smoothly--from staffing to snacks--and factor in all of your costs. This will help you set a price that results in profits for the business. 4. Secure Inventory. If you plan to use specific shapes, secure your inventory prior to posting the project. Customers will not be happy if you cancel a camp or change out projects because you can not get inventory. 5. Make Sign Ups Easy. Whenever possible, have an option to sign up online to lock down sales. Having a clear description of programs and the ability to sign up 24/7 is crucial to filling seats. 6. Market & Advertise. Check into local opportunities to market and advertise your camp programs. Purchase ads in publications or websites with Summer Camp issues. Some schools, daycares, etc. may even allow you to provide flyers to go home with kids. If they resist, tempt them by offering a special discount code just for their customers. 7. Promote in House. In addition to promoting on social media, in emails, and with posters and flyers, have a display in your studio and a dedicated web page with camp projects and themes. Be sure

iv

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE • VOL 11

to train employees how to talk about camps to walk-ins and during parties to spark interest. If a customer expresses interest, employees can offer to sign them up right then and there. This prevents people from changing their minds or forgetting to sign up later. 8. Attract Repeat Campers. Offer a different theme each week, or have a few project options for a popular theme. For instance, if you do a few weeks of “Mystical & Magical” camp, offer a selection of unicorns, fairies, cauldrons, dragons, etc. so repeat campers can choose a different item. 9. Have Fun! There’s no better advertisement for your business than happy campers. Word of mouth is still the strongest form of advertising. Give those campers something to talk about! 10. Get Feedback. Ask attendees and parents to review the projects and the overall experience and get permission to use feedback in testimonials. Make it simple and have kids and parents do it during camp. For kids, “How many smiles do you give this project/ instructor/week, etc.?” For parents, 3-5 multiple choice questions with optional comments. Use feedback to plan future programs.

But wait... there’s more!

Magical Crystal Ball Dish | 651 C AT B O W L CO LO R S • SC028 Blue Isle • SC071 Purple-licious • SC095 Pinkie Swear • SC012 Moody Blue

SUPPLIES • SC005 Tiger Tail • SC015 Tuxedo • SC016 Cotton Tail

• 8010 ½” Art Tape • 9599 Hydra Art Sponge • 9591 Paint Dotters • C500-R1 Cobalt Round - 1

• DOTG01 Dotting Gyre • Toothpick • Paper Towels

INSTRUCTIONS 1.

Dust off the Cat Bowl with a dry Hydra Art Sponge.

8.

Gently peel off the paper towel. Fill in any missed areas by pressing the paper towel into those spots.

2.

Turn the bowl upside down with the ears pointing down towards you. We’re making this Cat Bowl into something entirely new!

9.

While the glaze is still slightly damp (but not completely wet), carefully peel off the masking tape from the points of the dish.

3.

Use the ½” Art Tape to tape off the pointed sections of the bowl, leaving the center blank circle unmasked.

10.

4.

Time to create a cool marbling technique on the inside (circle) of the bowl! First, gently squirt a thin stream of Blue Isle in a zigzag pattern onto a paper towel. This stream of glaze needs to be about as wide as the bowl.

These points of the dish are now going to be turned into the crystal ball holder! First, paint the pointed sections of the dish with 2-3 coats of Tiger Tail.

11.

Use the Cobalt Round #1 brush to make a fancy scalloped design around the bottom of the crystal ball.

5.

Rotating the paper towel roughly 90 degrees between each color, gently add thin streams of Purple-licious, Pinkie Swear, Moody Blue, and Tuxedo.

12.

Mix a dot of Tiger Tail with a dot of Tuxedo. Add darker “gold” outlines on the scallops and the holder’s legs to make them extra fancy.

6.

Fold the paper towel in half to “smoosh” the colors together. Carefully open the paper towel to reveal the marbleized glaze colors. Take a toothpick and add extra swirls in the marbleized glaze, as desired. Be sure not to mix the colors too much to avoid the colors muddling together.

13.

Dip a toothbrush into Cotton Tail. Rub the bristles with your thumb as you point the toothbrush towards the dish to create a white splatter look.

14.

Dip the Dotting Gyre (any size you want) into the white glaze and dot the crystal ball. While the dot is still wet, take a toothpick and pull from the inside outwards to create points of the stars. Repeat dipping, dotting, and pulling to create magical gleams/shimmers/stars all over the crystal ball!

15.

Take a sponge dotter and pounce 2 coats of Tuxedo all over the back of the dish up to the rim.

16.

If the dish is completely coated in glaze, no clear glaze is required. Fire to Cone 06. Enjoy!

7.

Carefully press the paper towel inside the bowl and twist it slightly to marbelize the colors even further onto the bisque. Again, be sure not to smoosh or twist the paper towel too much, or the colors may become muddled.
