party. outlook festival turns five this year.
4 outlook festival began as a happy coincidence. three leedsborn club nights promoting leftfield underground music came together almost by chance. outlook has since snowballed, and the ride along the way has been an experience that all parties involved have thoroughly enjoyed.
words by Noah Ball
In early 2008, I bought myself a ticket for The Garden Festival in Petrcane, Croatia. Soon after I received an email from one of The Garden Festival owners, asking, “Is that the Noah who used to deejay every Friday night at my old club The Magnet in Liverpool?”. It was indeed. Following a few emails back and fourth between myself and Eddie from Garden it became apparent that there was room for another weekender to take place on this beautiful little festival site he was managing. So a rough idea for an event began to take shape. Dubstep had already been around for a few years at this point, but day after day it was steadily increasing in popularity and reach. At this stage I approached Simon Scott, whose sister night Exodus DMZ had been at the forefront of the rise in dubstep in the North of England since the genre’s inception. The club night Vagabondz was the third set of promoters in this happy triangle, who brought a specific approach to promotion and a roster of artists that complemented the partnership. Following weeks of arguing about what the festival should be called, Outlook was born. And later on that summer in 2008 Outlook launched in Petrcane, a rustic little fishing village on the Croatian coast...
YEAR 2 OutlOOk 2009 – exOdus tO crOatia [Zrce Beach, nOvalja, PaG] In a momentary lapse in judgement, The Garden Petrcane and Outlook agreed on the ingenious idea that if we changed the name of the festival, the village locals would never know that Outlook was returning to the place it had just been banished from. So in January 2009 “Outlook Presents” Exodus to Croatia was born. In all physical promotion across Europe the festival was still branded as Outlook, but online and in the region we tried (and failed) to run the event under the guise of a brand new festival. Those hawk-eye villagers were too clever for us and just before Easter we received the news that we’d been rumbled and that there was categorically not a chance in hell that we would be returning to that quiet catholic town with our devil’s music. In April 2009 Exodus to Croatia was shelved. For two months Outlook searched high and low for an alternative venue, until one of our good friends in Zagreb presented us with the option of using a venue on Croatia’s party island, Pag. Having no venue, potentially no festival, made it incredibly hard to promote the event, but thanks to a loyal following from the first year and an even bigger line-up of d&b, dub, reggae, dubstep and hip hop than 2008, we managed to attract a few hundred more followers than we had the year before.
YEAR 1 OutlOOk 2008 – the Garden [Petrcane] The first years’ line-up included Mala of Digital Mystikz, a very young Rusko, before he catapulted into fame, Jehst, Gilles Peterson, a very young Hudson Mohawke, Iration Steppas, and many more names that have since become regular linchpins at the event. Approximately 1400 dubstep fans, predominantly from Leeds, Manchester, and Brighton travelled by bus, train and plane to Zadar to witness the first major venture of dubstep out of underground clubs and into the Dalmatian sunshine. Unfortunately the quiet little village wasn’t at all ready (or ever really appropriate) for the arrival of Outlook Festival, or the music it brought with it. locals branded dubstep “the devil’s music” and the people behind The Garden Festival had no option but to tell Outlook it could not return.
Against all odds, that year was another success, but it was basically a clubbing event on the beach. It suited our purpose, but it didn’t feel like a proper festival. So once everyone had departed we began our search for a new home for the following year.
YEAR 3 OutlOOk 2010 – FOrt Punta christO [Pula] It was through some mutual friends that we eventually met Vedran and Djuro from Seasplash Festival, based in Pula. They showed us Fort Punta Christo for the first time. We fell in love with the venue and have never really looked back. With a bigger line up than 2009 and plenty of time to promote the festival we saw a jump in size from 1900 people to just under 5000 people. But we didn’t just see a big jump in numbers - we also made a leap from being a weekend clubbing event into a full blown festival. it felt good. a little un-nerving perhaps. Stand-out memories from 2010 have to include Roots Manuva and The Bug’s main stage performances, the birth of Mungo’s Arena. Noah’s Ballroom had something very special about it in that first year. Outlook lung made its debut. The undercover police definitely made their presence known to some with 52 arrests and subsequent heavy fines. Overall, the festival felt rough around the edges. There was a free-party feel to the event, it was an unknown venue, and those who travelled really didn’t know what to expect. As with many growing events things were done somewhat by the seat of our pants but thankfully we successfully pulled off a great event. Following 2010 positive word of mouth spread like wildfire and we knew that we had cemented the foundations for something special. That year showed us that Outlook was now something that had to be taken seriously. No longer a glorified weekend of clubbing, we realised we needed to dedicate our lives year round to bringing the event together.
YEAR 4 OutlOOk 2011 – the additiOn OF harBOur & the MOat Public demand and a hunger for booking more of our musical heroes were the main reasons for our expansion in 2011. Also, we wanted to make things more professional, with higher production levels etc. The addition of the Harbour and Dockside arenas gave the festival a centerpiece for some larger acts that we wanted to put on. Main stage appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Skream & Benga, Horace Andy and many more rocked the Harbour, whilst DMZ and other label showcases rattled the Dockside arena. Powered by Martin Audio, the same system that Glastonbury pyramid stage uses, meant that sound was second to none. The Moat had people reeling, shaking and sweating to the bass-driven sounds of dubstep and drum & bass from Europe’s finest, playing through a specially designed Noise Control Audio system. 2011 was the combination of all our hard work and proved to us that we could create a line-up and environment that people come and enjoy in a way we couldn’t have foreseen four years ago.
YEAR 5 We thank yOu FOr WritinG Our histOry With us... love, Outlook.
Out to photographers: Ashes57, Marc Sethi, Lisa Wormsley, Dan Medhurst, Graham Turner, Iza Viola, Shaun Bloodworth and Katya Guseva for letting us use their images. special thanks to Leoni Keogh and Jonathan Scratchley for making this programme happen.

one of the most amazing festivals with my favourite artists, best friends, and loved ones having the best time in a beautiful location, juxtaposed against the enormous amount of work and the most stressful weekend of my year. Four years running.
Gentleman’s Dub Club, Submotion Orchestra, Congo Natty, Nanci & Phoebe, True Tiger and P Money, because they’re all good friends of mine and I always enjoy having drinks with them anyway. ROVINJ BUILT ON AN ISLAND CLOSE TO THE COAST IN THE THIRD CENTURY, ROVINJ WAS CONNECTED WITH THE MAINLAND IN 1763 BY FILLING IN THE CHANNEL.
PULA THE ARENA AMPHITHEATER WAS BUILT AT THE SAME TIME AS COLOSSEUM IN ROME, DURING THE REIGN OF EMPEROR VESPASIAN (FIRST CENTURY AD).
THE ARENA
With stone tiers all the way around, an estimated 20,000 bloodthirsty spectators could watch the Gladiators fighting to death at The Arena. The core of cultural activities in times gone by, from gladiator tournaments to medieval markets in the Middle Ages, this phenomenal architectural feat is still at the hub of Pula’s vibrancy. Host to a wide range of events, including the Pula Film Festival, the Arena also holds many music concerts, with a capacity for around 5,000 spectators. Artists such as Manu Chau, Buena Vista Social Club, Sting, Jamiroquai, Stereo MCs and Crazy Couzins have all graced the Arena with their presence.
The 19 Rovinj islands and mainland have been described as “outstanding scenic wonders,” because of the pristine beauty of the indented coastline and its forests of holm oak and Alpine pine trees. Rovinj’s beautiful waterfront, called Riva, runs alongside the Adriatic sea bay and is lined with ice cream parlors, bars and restaurants. The busiest area is the very centre of Rovinj, including the old part of town. It is where most bars are located and where locals hang out. You can catch an early morning bus from Pula’s central station, which will take you to Rovinj in 40 minutes. Or go on a boat cruise that takes you to surrounding islands, along the stunning coast, including fishing, swimming, shopping, and dinner. Average price per person is €25-30 and the boats leave Pula’s waterfront at 9 am.

OUTLOOK’S HOME, FORT PUNTA CHRISTO, WAS BUILT IN FOUR STAGES BETWEEN 1836 AND 1883 AND DURING THIS PERIOD IT WAS THE BIGGEST, MOST ARMOURED FORT IN THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN DEFENCE SYSTEM.
ON THE 22 FEBRUARY 1945 DURING WORLD WAR II THE FORT WAS BADLY DAMAGED BY ALLIED BOMBING AND FROM 1945 THROUGH 1980 IT WAS LEFT ABANDONED.
THE FORT HAS AS MANY AS 270 SPACES AND SECRET PASSAGEWAYS THAT CAN BE FOUND OVER ITS AREA COVERING 10,000 SQ.METERS.

After reading many of your interviews I’ve gotten an impression that your approach to music is very academic, isn’t it? I’d probably make a distinction between academic and conceptual. I find a lot of academic work as boring as other nonacademic people do. i like things with ideas in them, but it doesn’t have to be academic. Does your conceptualizing ever interfere with your producing? No, it’s not relevant to me making music at all. It’s harder to run a record label and write music simultaneously. How so? Doing A&R for a record label makes you hear very critically, so you’re always trying to improve things in your own music. I have to apply my producer’s ear to other people’s music, just ‘cause I need to filter and see if it fits or doesn’t fit with the concept of the label... whatever the concept is. What IS the concept?
Kode9 at Outlook Clearing | Saturday 12:30 am kode9, a.k.a steve goodman, the man behind multigenre label hyperdub and two timeless albums with his musical ally spaceape prefers not to have his picture taken, hiding behind oversized shades, hats and paperbag masks. he enjoys playing records in complete darkness, lectures at the university of east london, and can reach higher states of mind through writing and philosophy. one of the most enigmatic personas at outlook this year, kode9 talks to us about his latest album, his flying dreams, and soup recipes...
I’m not that kind of deejay that jumps up and down trying to get a response. I hate that to be honest.
interview by Katya Guseva as published in Big Up Magazine #10
Well, that’s the hard bit, ‘cause I don’t know what it is. I intuitively know, when I hear a piece of music, whether it’s going to fit on the label or not. That’s why the label hasn’t been able to stay in one genre. At the moment it seems that the concept of the label is to try and provide a bridge between different strands of music coming out of the UK, be it dubstep, grime, funky, or other stuff. It’s like a connector, a hub of these different subgenres. Let’s talk about your latest album Black Sun. You and Spaceape started a while ago, didn’t you? It was a stop-and-start kinda thing. I was deejaying, running a label, writing a book, and Spaceape was busy. It didn’t come together till the middle of 2010 when I started to say fuck off to everything else I was doing. “Leave me alone, I’m just gonna hide in the studio,” which is what I love to do. So the album started to crystallize from then onwards. The tracks were there for a while, but I kept ditching drums, and basslines, changing things around... So I guess the story behind the album is this radioactive event that transformed the planet... How did you come up with that? Fukushima hadn’t happened yet at the time.
We only started to do that after we finished the album. It was like, “Ok, we’ve made the music. What have we just made? What is it going to look like?” We had to make up the story and try and visualize it. So we created this little virtual world out of some of the content of the lyrics and some of the sounds, and vibes coming out of the music. It works really well. If you listen to the album carefully, you kinda realize there’s a different feel before the “Black Sun” track and after. Seems like “Black Sun” is the radioactive event itself. I think that’s true. And I think that was the case when “Black Sun” came out a couple of years ago. That was the radioactive event for me musically, and you can probably hear the tracks made before that and after. It’s not quite in that order on the album, but it kind of is, because the ones after “Black Sun” have these very intense and colourful synths in them, and that’s one of the aftereffects of the radioactive event. In them things are glowing a bit more, visually and sonically. For me, it has to do with analog synths. There’s this certain glow to them, this kind of fizz... zzzzzz... this kind of fire or a bonfire sound that runs through all the tracks.
What a lot of people get through using psychedelic drugs, I get through philosophy and ideas. Philosophy, in theory, could be as much of a drug as psychedelics. Both can make you lose your mind. In this fiction world we made up, the radioactive event fucked up the atmosphere and the sun comes through this smokey cloud and it comes through in green colours. It’s not a dark world, it’s more psychedelic, glowing... more like in wrong colours... Have you had psychedelic experiences? I have these experiences without taking any drugs. All the time, just listening to music. I don’t want this state to be an exception, but more like normality. That’s why I write... The hard thing about writing is trying to put these visions into words. Which is why my book Sonic Warfare is so hard, because it’s essentially about different vibrational levels of reality.
16
What a lot of people get through using psychedelic drugs, I get through philosophy and ideas. Philosophy, in theory, could be as much of a drug as psychedelics. Both can make you lose your mind. What about your dreams? Do you see any? Do you remember them? I’ve always had flying dreams from a very young age. I think it’s a perfect thing for a musician to have. I can’t remember a lot of dreams, but I remember my flying dreams. It’s amazing, in the beginning of the dream you’re walking along, and then you jump and you’re flying, and you can navigate... In my dreams I feel partially blind, I mean, I have eyes and they work, but I can’t open them. So everything is shadowed in a strange way. But I’d be flying and I could go anywhere I want! I used to go to bed deliberately so I could go fly wherever I want. But I also have a recurring disturbing dream about deejaying. There are different variations of it. There’s this one, when I show up to deejay at a club and it’s so dark that I can’t see my records. So I’m pulling out my records one by one, but I can’t see what they are. Or I open my bag and there are no records in it. So it’s always this partially blind, “I can’t see” thing. That’s why I carry my torch around all the time, ‘cause I’ve been in the situations when I’ve asked for the lights to be off at the club, and I came with this little torch, and I’ve lost it after the first track! Very scary! But it is the most amazing feeling to deejay in complete darkness – nobody can see you and all you can see is the lights on the mixer.
It is the most amazing feeling to deejay in complete darkness – nobody can see you and all you can see is the lights on the mixer. At your deejaying shows I never see you look up to the crowd even once. Do you care about the audience at all? I didn’t notice that, but you’re right, I tend not to look at the crowd. I’m shy,
so I don’t like making eye contact. I listen though. I can hear their response, but ultimately I’m playing what I want to hear. But I’m not just playing arrogantly, more like if I want to hear it then I feel like it’s going to work. Hopefully... I’m not that kind of deejay that jumps up and down trying to get a response. I hate that to be honest. So I just play the music and hopefully it connects with people. If I’m excited about the music that I’ve got to play, I don’t give a shit about whether it’s three people there or five hundred. I just want to mix the music and have that feeling... It used to be much worse. Now I don’t have that problem of people not wanting to dance so much, but when I played to straight up dubstep crowds a few years ago, I was getting frustrated, ‘cause I could tell people wanted to hear something else. I think now people come to my shows with a more open mind and kinda expect me to go a bit off track.
by being put into this position on the lineup but I got through four decks in the first 15 minutes, and they kept switching the decks! It’s a labor of love, playing records... I used to play dubplates, but now things are moving too fast. And I’m not in just one genre where I get tracks from friends. I’m interested in three or four genres and I get tracks from everywhere. There’s lots of interesting stuff, and I want to keep surfing on top of these flows of new material. And CDs are the easier way. I would be so happy to see you play an all-jungle set. I keep coming back to it every time! You can’t get away from it! It’s just the best music that has been invented ever anywhere! I have the same conversation with people every time I play just a couple of jungle tracks. It’s just the best! It’s a very special period – ‘93 to ‘96. It doesn’t sound old either! ‘Cause it’s so out there, and you can’t fuck with it!
Why do you think that is? People are more used to it. And I think people generally have gotten a bit frustrated with certain types of dubstep. It’s not that new anymore, it’s not fresh. It’s ten years old, as far as I’m concerned. I think there are new styles that have emerged recently that are important for me to represent, instead of just fixating on the most crowd-pleasing sounds. Plus I need to do different stuff to keep myself interested. Would your sets be different if you were to, let’s say, play at 4 am after Tiesto, or at midnight after Damian Marley? Haha! That doesn’t happen! Only in your warped imagination. But yes, I’ve been in situations that weren’t optimal for me. I played between Rusko and Ed Rush & Optical. And I did respond to that. I just played jungle. I didn’t enjoy it, and I usually love playing jungle. But it was bad programming as far as I’m concerned. If you had a brain you would not put me in between Ed Rush & Optical and Rusko. That doesn’t make sense at all! I was really fucking angry... Also because the needles kept skipping! So not only was I frustrated
Was it your favourite time to be involved with music? As a raver, as a dancer, yes. Definitely. But when you compare where jungle and drum and bass ended up in the late ‘90s to some of this old stuff... it’s a different genre, isn’t it? I see the same thing happening with dubstep. In a different way – I think people have learned some lessons – but it’s almost like a different genre where it starts and where it ends up. It’s cool, things have to change. But I know which one I prefer. I feel you. That’s why I keep wondering why people say they want to hear new stuff, but they keep rewinding the tracks they recognize from the past. Because you always remember that feeling of hearing that amazing thing for the first time. That’s the fix everyone is hunting for. But what you learn is actually just ‘cause something is new doesn’t mean it’s any good. A lot of people want to play all this new stuff, all on dubplates, but when you hear it, it sounds like the last 50 tracks they’ve just played.
With dubstep at least I find myself going back, it’s almost like pressing the reset button. Things have gotten a bit lost in these 50 million producers and 50 millions different substyles. It’s good to just go back to the core, to what was amazing about it, to start with, and build on that. Don’t get distracted by the word “new.” It’s just branding, marketing: “I got all this new stuff, you should book me.” New is the new black. It’s the rat race. You think you’re working in music and you’ve escaped the rat race of working in the office, but actually music is as much of a rat race. Have you thought of incorporating visual elements into your DJ sets? Well, not with my DJ sets, but with our live sets. We were gonna wait till we created imagery for the album, like a visual for this radioactive world. Maybe an animation of the comic graphic novel that’s on the cover. We’d love to do that! So no more love for the dark room? I still love dark rooms, but we want to take it to the next level, and still keep the vibe, and put us into this world we’ve created. Dark rooms are more for deejaying. With the live set, it’s nice if the performer is immersed in this visual world – it’s not just projected on a screen over there, but it’s projected onto us, and it looks like we’re a part of it. This story we’ve created for the album is like a concept for the film, and the comic strip is like a story-board for a film. So the album is like an invisible film that we haven’t made yet. But we just don’t have the time...
people generally have gotten a bit frustrated with certain types of dubstep. It’s not that new anymore, it’s not fresh. It’s ten years old, as far as I’m concerned. The nice thing about film is that it allows you to draw all these strands together – writing a script, soundtrack, story boarding... So maybe that’s the next step... I just have no brain space to think about it. Sounds like you’re stretched too thin. How do you unwind? I have two kittens. Well... they have me...
I find it increasingly harder to read, ‘cause I get too distracted by all the things I have to do. I swim, which is good for emptying my brain. But I can’t breathe when I swim. Someone forgot to teach me how to integrate breathing into swimming rhythm. So I hold my breath, then I swim as far as I can, then stop, take another breath and start again. This could be a metaphor for something... Do you cook at all? I do. I’ve been adding to my repertoire recently. I’ve been cooking Thai soups, fish soups with coconut milk. I make a lot of soups. That’s what I’ve been specializing in for the last year. I’ve been trying to eat healthier, and soups are good for that. Why do you ask? I noticed lots of producers enjoy cooking. And they compare it to making music. Yes, it’s very similar to producing. Especially when you’re in the studio zone, it’s a nice break – just go and make some soup, and it makes everything smell nice in the house. It’s a really homely kind of thing. I love being in the studio, and when you’re in that hibernating mode of not going out, cooking is a really similar process to producing, but it uses different parts of your body. You can rest your ears, and use your nose and taste buds. It’s very complementary to making music. They go hand in hand. Some people play computer games on their studio break; fuck that, I make soup. Haha! Would love to get a recipe for your signature soup. All my recipes are very secret. You can taste it, but I can’t give you a recipe. Can we at least take a picture of it? I don’t know... It’s a shy soup. You’d have to lower the exposure on your camera. What haven’t I asked you that you always ask yourself. ...Why am I not asleep?
Some people play computer games on their studio break; fuck that, I make soup.

ASHES57
dedicated to documenting underground music and street art movements, ashes57
[delphine ettinger] has created artwork for many of your favourite records, fliers to some of your favourite club nights, and she probably has a picture of you getting down on the dance floor if you’ve been out to at least one of the essential bass music nights at any part of the world. being an integral part of the underground bass music scene, namely dubstep, since the very beginning, it was only logical for ashes57 to spread her skills in photography, art [and being an awesome human being] at outlook festival since its inception too. this year she is curating side effects project and we had a chat with her to find out a bit more.
HI, I’M ASHeS57, AnD I CAn’T LIve WITHouT... my marker pen, my
camera, my computer connected to the internet, music, and a cup of black coffee. I can work and do art from anywhere in the world with those elements. But my camera is the most precious object I own. THIS YeAr AT ouTLook, I’M goIng To Work on... a visual installation called
Side Effects in collaboration with a London-based collective called Forged Signatures. ouT oF ALL THe Work I’ve Done In THe unDergrounD MuSIC SCene, MY MoST prouD ACHIeveMenT IS... the work I
have done for Swamp 81 and Dub War NYC. I was really happy when Loefah asked me to work for Swamp 81. He gave me carte blanche and believed in my work. Working under his influence is very rewarding and inspiring. I am also proud of the LAVA Gallery we had opened for six months last year in central London. It was a very challenging experience and I would love to do it again.
I can’t live without my marker pen, my camera, my computer connected to the internet, music, and a cup of black coffee. MY FAvourITe MuSIC To Work To IS...
probably heavy bass music in general. Depending on the nature of work and time of the day, the BPM will change and adapt to my mood.
When I draw, I love heavy bass hip hop. I picture in my head the scenes described in the lyrics. And I am often inspired by single words and feel the need to write them down. When I design, I listen to underground beats without lyrics, maybe more glitchy. When I edit my photos I listen to mix tapes, footwork or heavy bass minimal hip hop, house, original dubstep. I often have friends coming by my house and playing records next to me when I design or paint. And then when I drive to go to shows all around the UK, I love to listen to faster beats, demos, some rare CD mixes, the good old K7 tapes. On my way back from clubs with Loefah, we tune in to Magic FM which plays old hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s. It’s always fun and good times with Loefah in the car. I DoCuMenT STreeT ArT AnD MuSIC MoveMenTS, BeCAuSe... those are my
passions and my everyday lifestyle. I take pictures of my surroundings and everything I see. I grew up doing graffiti and I was used to take photos of my and my friends’ art. It is when I got to America that I started to take it more seriously. The landscape was so beautiful and new to me that I was urged to take photos all the time. I bought my first professional camera there to do snowboard photography in Mount Hood, Oregon... I meet amazing people everyday and I try to grasp a side of their personality to be able to share with others later. In New York I took a lot of photos of street art. It gave me a reason to walk down the streets at anytime. But as soon as I moved to London music became my main activity. I love capturing the energy of the music nights I go to. MY BeST experIenCe AT ouTLook FeSTIvAL WAS... working together as a
team on the House Of Dub project last year. I got to know a lot of people working on the festival site and I loved the way we all worked very hard together. AMong CurrenT MuSIC MoveMenTS, I AM MoST exCITeD ABouT... juke and

KRS ONE On 21 September 1981, a then little known writer Steven Hager wrote about a movement that he had observed and been following in New York’s South Bronx. Little did he know that his article would not only make the cover of The Village Voice, but that the subculture originating from block parties hosted by the likes of DJ Kool Herc would become the multibillion dollar global phenomenon that is hip hop today – even internet giant Google dared to put hip hop on trial in their verse debate series. Hip hop, however, is often spoken of as though it were a homogenous entirety, lumping together rappers as diverse as Common and Little Wayne – who both have earned their rightful hip hop place, but could never be described as one in the same. In the words of one of the genre’s founding fathers Melle Mel, hip hop, like any other art form, ‘can only be as great as its masters”. It would therefore make sense that we turn to the man they call the ‘Teacha’ to wax lyrical and discover what exactly is this thing we call hip hop? In truly understanding hip hop, you begin to understand Kris Parker and his journey to becoming the ‘Teacha’ / KRS One / the Blastmaster. Like hip hop he is multifaceted, multitalented and dares to transcend genre, convention and environment. There was so much I wanted to know, but it seemed only right to take it from the top and ask what hip hop is according to KRS One? “People think breaking, emceeing, graffiti and deejaying – that is it for hip hop. No it is not. That is what we were confined to. This generation doesn’t understand that, for good reason, [but] the down side is that they take their freedom for granted”. “Here is why breaking, emceeing and graffiti happened, not how it happened, but why it happened – because we couldn’t get into other fields. This was the field that we were able to get into, so we rocked it and used it to forge our way into everything else”. In the case of Mr. Parker, hip hop transformed “an eighth grade drop out” that never saw high school into a hip hop icon and ‘one of the highest
paid college lecturers in the United States’, who counts leading intellectuals such as Dr. Cornel West amongst his friends. “In collegiate and general philosophy they would tell me ‘get out of here…’ But as hip hop, I now teach Harvard philosophy. I am a high school drop out and Harvard doesn’t stop calling me, Yale doesn’t stop calling me and Princeton”. “Anybody that enters the hip hop event raises their self worth. It is a social urban event that validates a person that would not normally be validated by standard institutions - that’s the brilliance of hip hop, and why it should be taught and why it is a human skill”. Teaching the next generation about the power of hip hop is amongst ‘The Teacha’s’ many passions and is amongst the themes of his lectures for high school students. He is after all the ultimate example of this musical juggernaut, as he so eloquently professed, “Look at me, I am nobody, literally I am nobody, but I am somebody here…” Educating people about hip hop is what he also believes is the future for the culture, but what is the future for KRS One? “Well that is the same question. For KRS One, which is hip hop, first of all the exhibit is the future. It is time to educate families on the importance of knowing hip hop, communication with your child, pushing the envelope, innovation and being original”. Having had the privilege of meeting and interviewing some key players and even legends in the hip hop game, the word is that the future of hip hop is about going full circle and returning to its true expression and essence – which is about innovation, forward movement and giving a voice to those otherwise hemmed in by society at every turn. It was about transcending the ghetto and the velvet rope or as KRS would describe, “it was a protest movement”. KRS One maybe considered on of the forefathers of hip hop, but he will always equally be the future of hip hop, for he embodies its authentic essence. Like hip hop, he knows where he came from and it is that experience and history that makes him the real deal. More information on the Teacha KRS ONE: www.templeofhiphop.org

THAT’S RuBBISH, MATe! There is no excuse to leave litter everywhere. TAKe THe ROAD MOST TRAVeleD Please don’t wander off into the undergrowth and try to keep to paths. This region of Croatia has a number of scorpions, spiders and snakes that do bite. Areas signed ‘off limits’ or ‘out of bounds’ are not safe for public access.
PROTeCT YOuR SKIN During the day make sure you wear sun screen. It’s good for you. Trust us. At night, if you don’t want to be eaten alive, please wear insect repellent or cover bare skin from the early evening onwards. Those little fuckers come in herds of millions!

There WILL be a strong police presence at the festival, both uniformed and plain clothed. If you are caught with drugs or caught clearly under the influence of drugs, you will be arrested and taken to police station and at the very least you will spend the night in a cell and be given a hefty fine. Croatian Drug law policy is a lot stricter than in the uK or other european countries, so as a minimum, expect to spend the night locked up and in court the next day with a €300-600 fine.
NO PROFeSSIONAl ReCORDINgS unauthorized professional cameras and video or audio equipment are prohibited. live video and audio recordings made without the permission of the artist and promoter are prohibited.

NO VANDAlISM! Anyone caught with a spray can will have their wristband taken off them immediately and will be escorted from the festival by the police. graffiti of any sort is absolutely unacceptable in and around the festival. It’s vandalism and will jeopardise Outlook being able to return to this beautiful site.
