corporates moving on enhancing their CSR strategy in line with the triple bottom line approach of Profit, Planet and People. The interventions adopted by companies towards sustainability range from building vocational skills, quality education and gender empowerment, ensuring child health & nutrition, environment, improving water, sanitation and hygiene or contributing to the humanitarian need in cases of emergencies in the country. Over the last two decades India has emerged on the global scene as a rising economic power. Although still an emerging economy, India’s huge population and its rapid rate of economic growth since the early 1990s have combined to make it an important player in the world economy. Despite the rapid economic growth, the country is faced with stark social and economic inequalities: India is the largest contributor to the annual global tally of child mortality under the age of five years: 17 lakhs. For every 100 children who enroll in schools, 70 percent drop out before they reach secondary school and 66 percent of these children who drop out are girls. Acute gender inequalities manifest themselves in the disturbing child sex ratio of 914 girls for every 1000 boys. In recent years, business and the corporate sector have shown a remarkable desire to engage with initiatives that impact the social agenda in India. The recent changes in the Companies Bill, with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) provisions, have provided additional impetus to this trend. This presents a wonderful opportunity for corporates to play an ever important role in nation building and ensure that the demographic dividend of the country is tapped into. Towards this end there are several

Many companies partner with Save the Children in its vision of a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. Over the last 5 years, Save the Children has worked with over a 100 such corporates deploying in excess of Rs.175 crores. Through this compendium we would like to thank and highlight some of these remarkable partnerships which are changing lives of children and their families. Key initiatives taken under these partnerships - such as strategic programme delivery, use of innovative approaches with Information, Communication and Technology towards meeting the development needs of children, leveraging the corporate employees and product strength, building the brand and CSR properties with corporates - form the core of this compendium. We hope these remarkable partnerships inspire corporates and NGOs to come together to deliver a meaningful impact and value for all partners and achieve something extraordinary for the children of India.

Sincerely,

Harpal Singh & Thomas Chandy Chairman & CEO; Save the Children

ABOUT

SAVE THE CHILDREN Save the Children is the leading, independent child rights organization working in 16 Indian states and 120 countries across the world. In India, we work at reducing infant and child mortality, improving children’s nutritional status, making quality education accessible, protecting them from exploitation and abuse and responding to emergencies for immediate and lasting change for children. Save the Children was founded in 1919 by Eglantyne Jeb. Her “Declaration of the Right of the Child” was adopted by the League of Nations in 1924 and inspired the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Journey so far and Milestones Achieved Over the last five years, we have experienced rapid growth through quality programmes, local fund-raising, governance and reach. We have engaged with over 120 partners across the country for programme implementation and setting up of community level systems. Other achievements include – • Last year alone, we reached 18.5 lakh children across 6.562 villages to provide quality education, healthcare, protection and emergency aid. • Persistently advocated with the Jammu & Kashmir Government that led to passing of law on an amendment in the Juvenile Justice Act of Jammu and Kashmir in 2013. This law brought the new Juvenile Justice Act at par to the Juvenile Justice Act of India. • Awarded Certificate of Excellence for Child Sensitive Social Protection Project at the Bihar Innovation Forum in 2014. • Provided leadership to Right to Education forum and also host the Secretariats of the Reproductive, Maternal and New Born Child Health & Adolescents (RMNCHA+) and the Coalition for Sustainable Nutrition Security. • Save the Children, along with UNICEF and the UN Global Compact, developed the first Children’s Rights and Business Principles as guidelines for businesses in their interaction with children. Learning from what we have achieved, we continue to make plans to build an organization for action that would impact the lives of 50 lakhs of the most marginalized children and be their voice.

HELPING GIRLS IN RAJASTHAN AND JHARKHAND GET AN EDUCATION TO BOOST ITS VISION OF 100% SHIKSHA, P&G PARTNERED WITH SAVE THE CHILDREN TO EDUCATE OUT OF SCHOOL GIRLS IN SOCIALLY BACKWARD COMMUNITIES OF JHARKHAND AND RAJASTHAN – TWO OF THE MOST EDUCATIONALLY BACKWARD STATES OF THE COUNTRY. P&G launched the Shiksha education program in 2006 as an extension of its global philanthropy program Live, Learn & Thrive that reaches out to over 500 lakh children in need. P&G has partnered with Save the Children to boost the Shiksha campaign, which has engaged its consumers to buy their products and contribute towards the education of underprivileged girls, touching over 280 thousand lives across the country. P&G’s partnership with Save the Children has been against the backdrop of Save the Children’s experience in creating better learning environments in schools, its engagement with multiple stakeholders ranging from students, teachers and communities, and its expertise in building collaborative models with the Ministry of Women & Child Development and Ministry of Human Resource Development, impacting over 50,000 children across India, educationally.

7

THE INTERVENTION The Indian Government had identified the educational need of girl children among socially backward communities in several states in the country. Towards this end, the Indian government’s Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidhyalaya (KGBV) scheme, was conceived to increase classroom attendance of out-of-school girls in socially backward communities in several states in India. Despite the scheme, the outcome was yet to reach its full potential with poor quality of education, lack of child friendly environments, and social taboos against girls’ education.

Save the Children, identified the need to intervene in the states of Jharkhand and Rajasthan which are educationally backward states especially among girls in these states. Save the Children works closely with Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI), local leaders and government officials. An accountable engine of change was activated at multiple levels through the teacher, parent, community and political stakeholders, to drive change that was both holistic and lasting. Save the Children, with the support of P&G, has intervened across 21 schools for girls from socially backward communities in the states of Jharkhand and Rajasthan in India since 2011.The programmatic approach adopted is :

8

2. To build the capacity of teachers to cultivate an inclusive and engaging living and learning environment. 3. To enhance the quality of the physical, social and intellectual learning environment for KGBV students. Activities conducted to bridge the skill gap amongst teachers to ensure quality education for girl children include capacity building programs and exercises for teachers and school management committees. Save the Children worked with communities to raise awareness through meetings with parents, community activities / skits and communication materials to provide information and educate the communities in bringing about a behavioral change towards social taboos. Save the Children addressed the need for improved learning environments through improving gender sensitive toilets, child friendly libraries, learning zones and sports facilities in the targeted schools.

Specific Objectives of the intervention between Save the Children & P&G are:

Addressing the need for resilience and life skills of girl children in these states facing multiple vulnerabilities, several activities involving play, self-defense and other extra-curricular activities were initiated.

1. To facilitate increased enrolment and retention of marginalised girl children in schools and KGBVs.

Several initiatives were also taken to involve child centered planning to raise concerns and issues faced by children.

THE IMPACT

The targeted group for the initiative include the following groups: Girls attending KGBV’s, out-of-school girl children, government education functionaries, KGBV teachers & academic support providers, school management committee members and 30,000 members of the community. • About 6000 children directly benefitted from the program with better access to quality education and life skills. • Over 500 out-of-school children were enrolled back in school for education through the KGBV’s. • In Jharkhand, there were 3563 direct and 10,000 indirect beneficiaries, whereas in Rajasthan, there were 2292 direct beneficiaries. • A MOU was signed with the Government’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA)in Rajasthan highlighting Government’s support for a collaborative approach towards project activities. • Save the Children’s advocacy and leadership in Right to Education also resulted in the Chief Minister of Jharkhand asking the Department of Education to chalk out a concrete implementation blueprint in Jharkhand.

P&G’S STRENGTHENED PARTNERSHIP WITH SAVE THE CHILDREN

BEYOND CHILD EDUCATION

The program acted as a launchpad for P&G to foray beyond education, into areas like emergency aid. P&G has actively contributed to meeting the Water, Sanitation and hygiene needs of communities during emergencies. Save the Children has been supporting P&G to build Shiksha as their flagship CSR programme by providing impactful case stories, research materials and project byte. Furthermore, Save the Children accords due recognition and visibility to P&G’s Shiksha campaign through its various platforms such as social media (Facebook and Twitter), featured placements on its website, the annual reports and communication through its media and advocacy teams. The success of the joint partnership can be seen through the renewed support of P&G towards Save the Children every year since 2011.

A COMMITMENT TO TAKE CHILDREN OFF THE STREETS, AND INTO THE CLASSROOM AVIVA PARTNERS WITH SAVE THE CHILDREN TO REHABILITATE OVER 6,500 STREET CHILDREN INTO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THREE CITIES IN INDIA. Aviva, being a global leader in the field of insurance, believes that education acts as an insurance for a better life, and that each and every child should have access to education. Towards this end Aviva prioritized education as an important developmental need for street children and launched the Street to School programme with a mission to reach out to 5,00,000 children worldwide.

19

SAVE THE CHILDREN’S INTERVENTION WITH SUPPORT FROM AVIVA

MAINSTREAMING INTO SCHOOLS, AND IMPARTING VOCATIONAL TRAINING, TO STREET CHILDREN There are over 1 crore street children in India, which is 10% of the world’s street population. Aviva decided to replicate and scale its global Street to School program to fund projects in the cities of Delhi and Kolkata, with the goal of facilitating the integration of younger children into mainstream schooling, or offering vocational training to older children. The global relationship with Save the Children and Aviva, “one that has steadily grown since November 2009” – coupled with Save the Children’s programmatic expertise and innovations in the areas of Child Education, Child Protection and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) – provided a robust premise for the partnership.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM’S MULTI -DIMENSIONAL APPROACH THAT MOVED BEYOND

MEETING THE NEEDS OF STREET CHILDREN

Objective : The Street to School programme of India was initiated with the aim of providing an overall development opportunity to street children in Delhi & Kolkata by building an enabling social and policy environment. The programme in Delhi was launched on 13 January 2010 with the opening of a Drop-in Centre for Street Children in Nehru Place. Currently, several centres are running in Delhi and Kolkata, where education and activity centres have been conceived to support the education of street and working children for almost a year before mainstreaming them to nearby government schools. Subsequently, Mobile Learning Centres were launched as part of the program, with a greater outreach to the doorsteps of slum children. These are equipped with

20

Information, education and communication materials such as books and televisions for delivering audio-visual learning and innovative teaching-learning materials.

MAIN ACTIVITIES Early Childhood Care and Development: For children between 0-6 years, aimed at providing care and education at the pre primary level to ensure that these children acquire school readiness skills and make a smooth transition into formal schools.

Bridge Course Centres: Catering to children

between 6-14 years who are out of school. These children are provided with life readiness and school readiness skills over a period of 6-12 months. Efforts are also being made to provide vocational training for children in this age group.

Mobile Learning Centres (MLC): Save the Children’s strong programmatic presence in the metros led to the innovative concept of mobile vans which are providing children with books & learning aids, and reaching out to marginalised children to mainstream them into formal schools.

With 1.26 crore children forced to work in hazardous occupations, India is home to the largest number of child labourers in the world. Nearly 25 lakh children work in cotton farms. Save the Children, with support from IKEA Foundation ( ensure consistency), initiated the “Child Rights for Change” movement with the aim of improving the lives of children working in cotton farms by providing them with a safer environment for healthy growth and development.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAMME’S MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH THAT MOVED BEYOND

MEETING THE NEEDS OF CHILD PROTECTION

Specific Objectives of the Intervention to be met by 2013 were: The project aimed at creating a social and policy environment to remove child labour from 1882 targeted cotton-growing villages across five states in the country.

KEY OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Significant target communities in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra are able to significantly reduce child labour through effective child protection interventions. Removing children from exploitative labour, providing quality education in schools and Anganwadis, building alliances and constituencies for change. Strengthen civil society networks to bolster implementation of CLPRA (Child labour Prohibition and Regulation Act) and bring about progressive changes in policies against exploitative child labour in the agricultural sector. Improved monitoring mechanisms to reduce intra and interstate child labour migration.

38

STAKEHOLDER APPROACH ADOPTED

FOR THE PROGRAM

The project was initiated in line with Save the Children’s programme strategy. It underscored child participation and women’s engagement in the programme design and implementation with a long term aim of sustaining the action. It strengthened children & women on two key fronts. Firstly it improved awareness on the issue of child labour and how it violates child rights especially with regard to their right for education. Secondly, it enhanced the capacity of children and mothers through community based protection mechanisms for their healthy development. Save the Children identified child labour as an issue that is widely spread across the country, with a need for a three tiered holistic approach which involved the following: 1. Engaging critical stakeholders directly at the individual (micro) level through preventing child labour and rehabilitation through schools. 2. Involving community institutions like schools, PRI’s and increased convergence of various government systems at the local level. 3. Larger policy level changes by networking with other civil society organisations and advocating for better implementation and amendment of Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act (CLPRA) at the national(macro) level.

39

THE IMPACT • 883 villages were progressing towards being made ‘child labour free’, a result of strengthening child protection systems at the local governance structures in the village, block and state level in Gujarat and Maharashtra. • 4,00,000 children were impacted through bringing children back to school, increased enrolment of children between the age group of 6-14 years and increased school readiness skills among the targeted children in these states. • Involved the local communities through 8050 farmers who pledged not to employ child labour in their farms. • Save the Children advocated for amendments to Child Labour Prohibition & Regulation Act (CLPRA), providing IKEA a platform to address the issue of child rights at the government level. • Networks and linkages were established with civil society organizations, legal experts and the media to ensure that the momentum generated would be sustained over the long term.

SAVE THE CHILDREN STRENGTHENS ITS

MULTI LAYERED PARTNERSHIP WITH IKEA foundation • IKEA foundation partnership with Save the Children has moved beyond child protection to address the needs of education, as well as humanitarian initiatives such as the emergency support extended in Bihar, Assam floods and Cyclone Phailin. • The strength of the programme initiated in Gujarat and Maharashtra under the Child Rights for Change Initiative has grown and extended, with the partnership between IKEA foundation and Save the Children being scaled to other cotton producing states such as Punjab and Haryana till 2018. Additionally, in the state of Rajasthan, an endeavour on inclusive education has been initiated.

FROM THE PARTNER’S DESK Through our long-term collaboration with Save the Children we are creating opportunities for children in developing countries by improving education and awareness of children’s rights and through these initiatives we are helping children all over the world break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future for themselves, their families and society at large. SUPPORT FROM CADBURY INDIA

India accounts for more than 20% of global maternal and child deaths, and the highest maternal death toll in the world. 40% of the maternal deaths during pregnancy and child-birth are due to anaemia and under-nutrition. In the state of Maharashtra, the level of health and malnutrition amongst certain tribal communities is three times the threshold used internationally to trigger an emergency response. Government schemes like the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), school Mid-Day Meal Programs and Health Services have not been able to tackle the crisis adequately.

KEY APPROACH

ADOPTED UNDER THE PROGRAM With 80% of brain growth of newborns taking place during the first thousand days, the FIRST 1000 DAYS is the biggest ‘Window of Opportunity’ to break the inter-generational cycle of malnutrition and shape healthier futures .A positive impact in this phase can be a defining influence on both the individual’s and society’s long-term health, stability and prosperity. Save the Children is internationally recognized for its work in addressing malnutrition, particularly addressing cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and its approach of Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) to address children with Severe Acute Malnutrition. Save the Children is also the Secretariat of the Nutrition Coalition in India, providing a leadership role in creation of the Block Operational Plan under which Save the Children is working to reduce child mortality by 2/3rds, by 2015. This is being done by strengthening community level mechanisms, capacity building, interacting and strengthening governance structures at the block, district and state levels.

44

KEY PROGRAM

ACTIVITIES

The joint intervention targeted 30 villages in the Jawhar and Mokhada blocks of Thane district in Maharashtra (known as the focal points of child under-nutrition and related deaths). Amongst the endeavors undertaken were ensuring better home-based care during pregnancy & lactating period, fostering optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding practices, immunization & nutrition supplementation, capacity building for community health workers, and strengthening partnerships with Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and the Public and Private Sector. Mondelēz encouraged its employees to contribute to the project by way of bidding for auction prizes during the ‘Joy of Giving Week’ in 2012. This contribution helped towards setting up of a Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre in the area.

IMPACT

• Food habit and care of children (0-2 yrs) and of pregnant and lactating women is being improved for the FIRST 1000 DAYS. • A reduction in childhood Severe Acute Malnutrition, especially, is being engineered. • Suitable behavioral changes are being brought about within families and the community. • Early detection and management of growth faltering in pregnancy & childhood is being ensured. • The partnership is growing stronger by the day, as we take nimble strides towards fulfilling the mission.
