Introspection required Tall claims of the administration that the recent eviction drives and clearing of the rivers and drains have bettered the situation during floods in Guwahati have proved to be completely false as the latest bout of incessant rainfall submerged more than half of Guwahati. Educational institutions were shut down; commuters got stuck, thereby unable to reach their respective workplaces. The city of Guwahati had come to a complete standstill. People kept themselves in house but the flood water even made inroads into the households of some people where the water level raised not only above their knees but upto their chests. It was indeed a harrowing experience to the Guwahatians this time around. It is easy to blame the inefficiency of the administration towards managing flash floods in Guwahati but it is equally important to introspect into ourselves to see how much we as the concerned and conscious members of the society have contributed on a personal level to make things better. It is often seen how even the affluent section of the society show indifferent and callous attitude towards basic hygiene in their locality and how insensitively become one of them from the lot in clogging the drains in and around. Until and unless we as aware citizens do not realize our responsibilities, the administration alone can never affect any visible change in the overall management of the flood waters during monsoons. The Mileage in this issue illustrates the tormenting conditions in the girls and boys hostels of Guwahati during floods. The aftermath scenario of perennial floods is another aspect of worry as this leads to epidemic of various ailments. Moreover, this issue carries a special coverage on Durga Puja. The festive season necessitates all the near and dear ones come together and celebrate. But unfortunately on the other side, there are still thousands languishing in the relief camps in the Golaghat district due to the recent conflict amongst people residing in the border areas of Assam and Nagaland. Forget about celebrating Durga Puja or any other festival, they are reluctant to go back to their villages. The fear which crept into their minds is difficult to erase as they have seen their dear ones getting killed. It is so disheartening and ironical that a particular line drawn on the boundary of these two states' map has become the reason for the mindless slaughtering of innocent human beings in these border areas. A detailed coverage on this contentious matter also finds space in this very issue.
