he world we live today is interconnected. This means that to be successful personally, intellectually and professionally, students need to become “Global Citizens”, skilled at interacting in and between multiple cultures and capable of analysing issues on a global level. The education scenario is undergoing a sea change and the international education sector is escalating and making more and more opportunities available to students who are interested in pursuing their ambitions of a global degree. In an increasingly competitive global job market, it seems quite obvious that studying abroad can take your resume from dull to distinguish. As a student aspiring to have a foreign degree, it is important to remember that it takes a bit savvy and a go-getter attitude to truly make your study abroad experience as asset to employers. Studying abroad provides students with opportunities to study a variety of subjects in more depth and from different cultural perspectives. With proper planning and preparation, the study abroad experience can truly be life-changing. Nationwide, students who have studied abroad consistently count their international experience as one of the best parts of their college careers. In all, for those students who undertake the challenge, living
and studying abroad is one of the most exciting and enriching opportunities. These days, we often see foreign universities making inroads into North Eastern states. These universities from Australia, America, UK, Canada etc. are indeed successful in enrolling many students from the region. But the important fact is that people at large are still unaware of the technicalities that are to be understood before applying for a course in a foreign university. People at large are not aware of the tests like: TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT, SAT etc. These tests are inevitable for getting admitted and getting scholarships from different foreign universities. Due to lack of adequate abroad education consultants and government’s indifferent attitude towards disseminating information about abroad education, a sizeable number of people of the region are still ignorant. Dedicated, professional and multiple educational consultants are the need of the hour along with a concerted effort both by the government and non-government agencies to generate awareness about education abroad. Such initiatives can help people choose best possible courses in the best possible educational institutes across the globe.

Studying Abroad for NE students Students when look around India for an advanced degree with international standards, they hardly find any. Hence, the only options they find are to move overseas to pursue higher education programmes. But again, such eagerness and enthusiasm are seen among students belonging to the tier 1 and tier 2 cities that are quite aware and updated about the procedures and the tricks of the trade. But for students belonging to places like Northeast which is cut off from the mainstream India lack information, hence find it difficult to make it to study abroad. Roselin Kiro finds out the challenges faced by the small town students of North Eastern states to come out of the nutshell and make it big.
T
here is an increase in choosing to study abroad by the Indian postgraduate students over a period of time. The recent statistics from the U.S. Council of Graduate School shows that the offers of admissions to Indian postgraduate students are up 25 per cent for 2013-14 from the previous year, with an increase of nine per cent for all countries. Though for the Indian students, the most popular destination is U.S, other countries such as Germany, Canada and the U.K are also seeing significant increase from India.
Opportunities for students to study abroad

have adopted the lifestyle of the west. Now culture shock is not a huge issue for most of the Indians who visit abroad with the help of a student visa. A degree from a top foreign university is valued more in the Indian job market than a local degree. It is so, because overseas programmes and departments are prestigious and have better facilities, laboratories and favourable culture of research. in our country. Due to the vast influence of western culture in our country, there has been continuous modification in the lifestyles of the people. Gone are the days when students used to find life quite difficult and different in the west. The culture, lifestyle, food, language, and the thought process almost everything seemed alien to them. But now due to globalisation, the young generation has adopted the western culture so well that even they
Stumbling blocks
The world’s education system is under massive pressure to expand. The young generation of India has a huge appetite for education as the growth in the size of the middle class escalates; millions are increasingly looking to go for education abroad. It is predicted that by 2020, India will have the largest young population in the world and will have the second largest graduate talent pool, globally. But this

growth is seen mostly among the students belonging to the metros. When we find out the statistics of North East Indian students studying abroad, they are just a handful. Where lies the problem? According to Sachin Mahadik – ITM Director - International Operations, “The problems faced by the students applying for overseas studies, especially for students belonging to the NE region who are disconnected from the mainstream India, is lack of awareness about the choice of appropriate Institute/University with regards to the students’ chosen field of study.” NE students lack encouragement and opportunities to take up studying abroad. While some students and their parents might not have realised the value of an international qualification, both students and their parents need to be made aware of the umpteen opportunities that one can get through an exposure to these foreign universities.
Finding out ways
It is important to create awareness among the student community about overseas education and its advantages. Study abroad fairs would be a welcome initiative. Sharing about the struggle in finding out ways to make it to U.S. for pursuing postgraduate degree, Ajay Gogoi, a student from Lakhimpur, Assam said, “It’s been two years that I am struggling to make it to US for my further studies. Each time I lag behind with different dilemma. Sometimes it is the problem with a visa, sometimes with the documentation, etc. Though it is disheartening at times but the struggle is on.” Many aspirants with high hopes to pursue higher education from prestigious foreign universities are ignorant of the various procedures, formalities that one has to go through to make it to their dream destination. Sachin Mahadik avowed, “I think what

The scope and opportunities for students opting to study abroad no doubt is a key to a bright and promising future. But in the North Eastern states of India things turn out to be little difficult. But all that students require is guidance, expert’s consultation along with the student’s keen desire to make it to his/her dream university. the small states of Northeast India require is regular career guidance fairs and seminars are to be held for the students and their parents as well. There is also a need for the media to take active participation by highlighting the means and methods to opt for a foreign university inculcating interest among the students.”
Most preferred destinations
Traditionally, Indian students have shown a preference for UK and USA as an overseas study destination. But in the past few years there has been considerable changes seen as other countries have also started attracting students. For instance, in 2011, significant number of students were enrolled in Canada (five percent), Japan (four percent), Russia (two percent) and Spain (one percent). Conversely, the market share of some of the most popular countries has decreased. The share of international students in the United States has dropped from 23 percent to 17 percent between 2000 and 2011, while the share of international students in Germany fell by three percent over the same period. English-speaking countries are more preferred by students, but it is now seen that even non-Englishspeaking countries have started offering
courses in order to attract students.
Eligibility criteria
Eligibility criteria for students who opt to study abroad depend on the destination, chosen Institution and the level of study. Apart from basic qualifications, students are also required to undertake an English Language proficiency test like IELTS or TOEFL. Anybody who has completed class 12th is eligible to study abroad. One can also make it to foreign universities on the basis of academic prowess, extracurricular achievements, social service etc. With hard work and consistency, students can make a promising career by studying abroad. Student visas are generally easy to get as long as the student proves his genuine desire to study and qualifies for the course chosen and has enough funds to manage his tuition fees and living costs. Depending on the country, visa arrangement might differ. For many countries students are awarded visa that is sponsored by the college. In many countries students are allotted a work visa for a specific period of time upon the completion of their studies. The scope and opportunities for students opting to study abroad no doubt is a key to a bright and promising future. But in the North Eastern states of India things turn out to be little difficult. But all that students require is guidance, expert’s consultation along with the student’s keen desire to make it to his/her dream university. There is an urgent requirement of more consultancies to venture into the North Eastern parts of India and come in collaboration with the universities and colleges to organise education fairs and seminars on overseas studies. In the age of fast paced communication, if the world has become a global village, of which we also advocate, “vasudheva kutumbakam”, its high time we the students of North East make our way into these internationally acclaimed universities.

H
ow many of us can say that “I have never cheated in any of my exams”? Well I think that’s quite a tough question to answer. To be honest almost everybody at least once in his or her lifetime must have tried their hands in this ignominious art. Competitive pressures are thrust upon children at a very tender age, carries on with them throughout high school and college. With so much pressure to stand out as the smartest in one’s class, some students may take that quantum leap to seize the opportunity to succeed at a price of integrity. Cheating in school tests is quite a primitive problem of India. But, these problems literally scaled new heights recently when the news from eastern state of Bihar astonished and also ashamed the entire nation. The news revealed relatives of 10th-grade students climbed the wall of a school building and perched precariously from windows of classrooms as they handed cheating materials to children writing the tests inside. Cheating is one of the common phenomena in schools in remote rural areas in India, where jobs and seats in college courses are few but competition is ferocious. However, the deadly sight of parents risking their life and limbs to climb the walls of a school just in order to provide the cheating materials shocked many, not only in India but all across the world. Under Bihar’s anti-cheating law, dozens
of 12th-grade students were expelled and their parents detained in cases of cheating in tests. Many students in India drop out of school because they fail to pass the tough standardized tests in their 10th and 12th grades. Not just Bihar, in the year 2012, the campus of Harvard University was highly scandalized because of the suspension of more than 60 students in a government course. The scandal grabbed attention because of the shock value of the headline’s pairing: Harvard students and cheating. Perhaps cheating nowadays is not restricted to students of rural areas only but it is also prevalent in America’s most prestigious university too. It can be said or believed that cheating rates are so high because too many
university curriculums and courses are designed for cheating. And, based on current trends in college education it is likely to get worse. Also, as the internet makes cheating easier than ever and the college environment becoming more competitive how can cheating be stopped? Even that the cultural ideas may influence the prevalence of cheating, the best long-term solution may be to take a societal approach. For cheating to be reduced, instead of seeing cheating as something that can’t be done, the students must realize and acknowledge that it should not be done. Removing both the desire and habit to cheat, is the least immediately practical but most assured way of encouraging academic integrity. In a recent study, researchers in psychology and education also have been slowly gathering evidence that certain features of the college curriculum, course design, and even daily classroom practice can either induce or reduce student cheating. In gaining a new understanding of the problem, they are opening the door to possible new solutions. Another problem in most of the schools is rote learning. Rote learning turns students into parrots, capable of memorizing anything but understanding nothing. If rote learning is abolished, then cheating will vanish on its own. Students will only be able to succeed if they have understood the concepts taught, because their exam answers will have to reflect their understanding more, rather than their memory.

The term has definitely suggested someone who really helps, cares and sympathies regardless of who we are and what we do. Their profession is noble and virtuous and involves taking care. Nurses help patients suffering from all sorts of physical and psychological maladies and constantly monitor the condition of these patients and administer prescribed medicines at regular intervals. They also assist medical specialists and help set up medical equipment in operation theatres and clinical laboratories. Furthermore, nurses provide assistance to people who are unable to lead a normal life due to one reason or another or are recovering from illness. Nursing is an ideal job for those who want to serve humanity. If you are compassionate, have an immense will power and spirit to serve the diseased and the weak and are willing to work long hours in stressful conditions then this is the right profession for you. There is an unending demand for nurses in the country; however, the supply of nurses greatly falls short of meeting this ever growing demand. There is great demand for highly skilled nurses abroad. In fact, India has emerged as the largest provider of nurses to foreign countries. The lure of big money and better living conditions abroad often attracts experienced nurses from India. Other opportunities for qualified nurses include
teaching, Corporate Nursing, Manager Nursing, Staff Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, staff nurse - operation theatre and research jobs. An interesting aspect of this profession is that a vast majority of nurses are women. However, of late, men are also showing interest in the profession. Government has also allowed special hospitals to start M.Sc. Nursing programs without having the prerequisites to set up corresponding graduate programs. The norms for admission to nursing schools have also been relaxed so that married women can now get admission to various nursing programs. To be a professional nurse is not easy, it needs four year degree to do BSc. Nursing which has ample scope for jobs including government sector. They can work in defence sector and earn high salary and reputation. The Indian armed forces admit unmarried women in the age group of 17 to 24 years to the BSc Nursing program. The basic qualification is a 10+2 with 45% aggregate in Biology, Chemistry, English and Physics. Further, candidates have to be medically fit and clear a written test. Once candidates obtain qualification they can get themselves registered with the Nurses Council of their respective state. This makes them eligible to obtain a job. Students interested in pursuing higher studies can opt for MSc followed by MPhil and PhD. The cost of study in nursing schools varies from institution to institution. A few of the areas where students can get jobs comprise of Clinics and Heath Departments, Defence Services, Hospitals, Industrial Houses and Factories, Nursing Science Schools, Railways and Public Sector Medical Departments and Training Institutes. Candidates who want to work in government sector should qualify the exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission. ENVIRONMENT

ssues concerning the environment suddenly seem to have gained a fast prominence. Environment is the base from where the entire planet sustains as the human civilization cannot exist in vacuum. But, the consciousness among the people about the importance and the indispensability of the existence of a healthy environment has dawned upon the people very recently. Nature has always been appreciated by the people for its beauty and has influenced many to compose poems and prose on it and its elements but its utility for the very survival of creation was acknowledged since the twentieth century onwards. So, it can be said that nature suddenly has taken a leap from the background to the foreground. The way the world has looked at the environment has undergone huge transitions and developments with the passage of time. The existence and the omnipotence of nature had been realized by the primeval men as well and it can be assumed that from there the germ of worshipping the objects of nature had flourished. Paganism has a history of existence in almost all the cultures of the world. Initially man was awed and at the same time terrified with nature’s whims but with the progress of science and technology, nature became a little comprehensible to the people and with time passing further, people were enlightened about the threat to mankind if depletion of the environment was not regulated. Since the second half of the twentieth century, environmental concerns started to grab the attention of the world. In New Zealand in the year 1972, the world’s first Green Party was founded and since then the movement has only grown in stature. In the year 1987, the concept of ‘sustainable development’ was popularized by the World Commission on Environment and Development which preached the concept of controlled usage of natural resources to facilitate the necessities of the generations to come. Awareness was generated against the exploitation of nature and gradually the environmental concern seeped into all the major countries of the world including India. Another milestone in the stated genre would be the introduction of a literary discipline called ‘Eco-criticism’ which allowed for a disciplined and systematic study of the environment. Eco-criticism which is interdisciplinary in nature comprising environmental studies and literary criticism started with the USA and
with time assumed great relevance. Eco-criticism in fact catapulted a positive revolution in the attitude of the people regarding environment. India along with other countries in the world has included a compulsory subject called ‘Ecological/Environmental Studies’ in the college curriculum irrespective of the stream of the students. In fact, even in schools, right from the elementary level an initiative is seen to be taken to make the young generation aware of the benefits of a healthy environment and also knowledge is spread regarding the hazards if the environment is not treated well. These pragmatic steps taken by the concerned people are going a long way in paving a strong foundation on which a possibility for a greener and a better tomorrow can be envisioned. With the calendar having days marked
dedicated to environment almost every month, it can be understood that definitely there is a realization among the people on how significant the environment is for us. ‘World Wetland Day’ celebrated on 2nd February, ‘World Water Day’ celebrated on 22nd March, ‘Earth Day’ on April 22nd, ‘World Environment Day’ on June 5th and a few other such environment dedicated events establish that the progress is moving on the right path. But as in most of the cases, in the issues of the environment as well, a huge disparity exists between the preaching and the actual practices. In this regard, if we take the example of Assam, then things would be clear. The government is trying immensely to protect the one-horned Rhino which forms the pride of the state, however every other day the innocent animals fall prey to the materialistic designs of the poachers and the initiatives taken by the government fall flat. Similarly, the flash floods which have become an inevitable phenomenon every year of the state, results mainly because the people are least bothered about the importance of a problem free drainage system as they dispose garbage consisting mainly of non-biodegradable items anywhere which block the drainage system during rains. Hence, a holistic effort from all the sections of the society would definitely make the earth a better place to live in and make the dream of an environmentally rich planet a reality.

ES! I HAVE BEEN RAPED - a confession by a woman (on behalf of all the Indian woman) The caption, YES!... A fleeting majority of you must have smirked or shrugged when your retina perceived it. Lest ways the word ‘rape’- the epitome of obscenity I presume, did catch your rapt attention. Did it not? OMG! WTF! - are our general reactions when we hear or read about traumatizing rape headlines. I am a staunch feminist and I do not hate men. Hating would be a thing too easy to do!! Oxymoronic much they say that ‘rape’ flattens on the minds of men like maggots on a garbage dump. Believing in a self-thinking commodity, I vociferously disagree. Real men do not rape! Those gruesome, brutal lot who prey mercilessly on the bare flesh of the fairer sex ought to be categorized under a different taglineBeasts or Monsters. I am making this point clear because at this juncture when matters of grave concern await our attention, a petty bicker between a man and a woman is the least that we can afford. Being a woman now, I honestly fell caged, captivated, and imprisoned in my own body. 64 years of Independence and down the lane, fear in every form is what the Indian woman has acquired. It is time or high time that I (on behalf of every Indian woman) confess to the world(dominated by the masculine) that I too am is a rape
victim and I get raped every single day. I am afraid that this cycle will perpetuate until I breathe my very last. Eve-teasing! Getting teased has now become a part and parcel of life for me. No! I am not a coward but how do you expect me to deal and fight back with more than 10 eve teasers in a single day? Sometimes harsh verbal comments tend to scar my dignity but then I console myself saying, it happens. Is it actually supposed to happen? Am I born just to listen to these remarks I know nothing about? Many a times in a crowded place I find a hand struggling upto my breast or my butt without nobody witnessing it. The body touched was mine and I felt it, the guilt remains in my heart. Meekly my wounded heart whispers a question to my conscience‘Why are you ashamed? Shouldn’t they be ashamed who took undue advantage of your innocence? I do not have an answer.
Every time I travel through auto rickshaws-I catch the perverted drivers adjusting their mirrors to again catch a glimpse of my uncovered skin. Lecherous! They are!—Let alone the uncertainty of reaching my destination! When you get raped you are sexually harassed and abused unlawfully without your permission and ultimately when the cannibals have quenched the thirst of their lust you are dumped nude in some gutter! You lose your self-esteem completely. That is the ultimate outcome. The remarks, touches, comments, experiences mentioned above if cumulated and accurately mixed in proportion will amount to a 100 gang rapes. So,what do we do now? Adopt the legal procedure and lodge an FIR? In our country rape is the only crime where the victim becomes the accused and in reality it is she who must prove her good reputation, mental soundness, impeccable purity and sanctity. Next? Protests! Revolutions! Speaking for our undermined rights. Hell no! You will be ‘lathi-charged’ anyways and if you are a girl the police man will not hesitate to slap you so hard that your ear will start to bleed (with reference to Delhi Guriya rape protests) and Lo! I am still fantasizing about justice! As of now, the next time somebody asks you in a rapid fire round ‘ever sexually assaulted?’-Promptly reply -Yes! ObviouslyI live in India you see*

n positional astronomy, two celestial bodies are said to be in opposition when they are on opposite sides of the sky, viewed from a given place (usually Earth). Thus, a planet (or asteroid or comet) is said to be “in opposition” when it is in opposition to the Sun. Because most orbits in the Solar System are nearly coplanar, this occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the body are approximately in a straight line, i.e., Earth and the body are in the same direction as seen from the Sun. So, at the time of opposition, the planet (or comet, etc) is nearest to us, and thus, generally will be visible as biggest & brightest. This year Saturn will be at opposition on Sat, 23 May. The planet will be well placed for observation, in the constellation
Libra. You can spot it as a reddish star but without any twinkling. It will be visible for much of the night, reaching its highest point in the sky at around midnight. From Guwahati , it will be visible between 18:51 and 03:47. It will become accessible at around 18:51, when it rises 11° above your southeastern horizon, and then reach its highest point in the sky at 23:17, 45° above your southern horizon. It will become inaccessible at around 03:47 when it sinks to 12° above your south-western horizon. Over the weeks following its opposition, Saturn will reach its highest point in the sky four minutes earlier each night, gradually receding from the pre-dawn morning sky while remaining visible in the evening sky for a few months. If you have a pair of good binoculars or even a beginner telescope, you will be able to see the beautiful rings of this planet. Enjoy!

Do not become a fashion disaster. The laid back Jughead figure – head should opt for the latest soft pants, pajamas’ in checks along with a plain cotton t-shirt and a peak cap. The cool, suave guys should wear the round neck, Nehru collar cotton shirts in pastel plains or checks over sun washed blue, safari or military green jeans. For the smooth guy with extra style, a pair of pure white jeans and a black t-shirt with a designer log [ck, Armani] are ideal. The short guy should opt for t-shirt with vertical stripes. This should go without saying change your underwear daily. Wearing red underwear will give you a lift and no one needs to know why.

And you have to make an impression; your personal charms and wit will come in handy but do not underestimate the power of sheer physical appearance. Check out these options, if you have ‘nothing to wear’. If you have a gym perfect body, you should show it off. Try the latest skin fit Lycra, microfiber tights in black or metallic colour with black stretched jeans and black athletic shoes. Always remember clothing which looks and feels cheap and nasty will have the end result of making you also look cheap and nasty. The over-weight boy with a paunch should wear a thigh length shirt, t-shirt with narrow trousers. Choose and buy cloth only that suits you and your lifestyle.

Sandals have become an important part of the men’s wardrobe. Men typically don’t have the variety of shoe options that women have and so sandals have become a welcome bit of diversity. he very first thing, which come to my mind about summer wear is, it should be comfortable and stylish too. My coolest outfit for this summer season would be three quarter pant made of cotton or summer denim fabric, a cool lykra or stretchable fabric t-shirts or shirts of any sleeve with prints on it or in pastel color, sunglasses to make my eyes fell cool in the burning heat, and a good pair of slippers or sandal. Few tips from my side for the young guys of North East are go for light weight with good quality fabric which help our skin feel comfortable for whole day. In pants you can go for slim fit stretch free cotton pant, three quarter pants, and if you have good legs then go for sportswear short pants. T-Shirt are the best for summer to wear, go for pastel colors or for any funk prints of any sleeve which u feel comfortable, and half shirts looks cool too. Wear light weight shoes like sneakers, loafers or shoes made of good quality rubber, but slippers or sandals are best for casual outing and sunglasses are must for day out, wear sunglasses according to your face cut and which you can carry on well.

An interview by fashion co-ordinator - Aryan Nath Festival we had in Portugal. Today, our manager was very kind to take us to Kamakhya temple. We watched and learnt about Hinduism. We are looking forward to see more things and places. Q: Tell us something about your interactions with people from these parts? Ans: Peaceful, relaxed, kind and warm people. Culture shock! No we are kidding; although this culture is very different from ours, we are loving to discover it, and we can already tell you your food is delicious.
Q: When and how did you guys started off? Ans: We, Alexandra Urbano and AnaĂŻs-Lin Chastres are two classical and jazz pianists that shared the same passion of music and the same love for dancing. In the beginning of 2012, we joined forces; and with our passion and hard work Last Call was born. Q: How do you feel about your India Tour? Ans: We are so happy and grateful for the invitation. Our tour has just started and we are having a blast! It is from far exceeding our expectations! We were so well taken care of by our booking manager Victor Kaman. The energy exchanged between us and the crowd on the dance floor is unique over here; people have such a strong musical sensibility and it is transmitted through their dance. Q: Share some most amazing experiences of your career? Ans: Since the beginning of our project, things have been going really fast and we are very happy and proud to have played with many of our biggest inspirations. We feel lucky for participating in some major events such as Freedom Festival in Portugal and Psychedelic Circus in Germany and some other nice parties around Europe. After India, we are back to Portugal to play and spend some time in the studio before leaving for Italy and Germany. Q: Your thoughts on visiting Shillong &
Guwahati? Ans: Both experiences were amazing. The trip to Shillong showed us authentic India, like the traffic, the night markets along the road going up to the mountain. It was a nice experience for us. We did get to enjoy a lot of amazing food. We are also very lucky to be spending time with natives so we are living and experiencing their life style. On the way back to Guwahati from Shillong, we stopped to admire Barapani Lake. It reminded us of the site of Boom
Q: Why you guys did select the Genre Psy-trance? Ans: We guess that listening and dancing to trance is like being transported to another dimension, it feels like we are being called and connected to a kind of higher entity. It is a privilege to share our love and feelings for the same frequencies in those moments on the dance floor with others in that mould. We love all kinds of music, people and their culture, that is why we believe that Psy-trance brings together the past with the present and the future; and it is in constant evolution. Every day in Psy-trance can be a different day where you can live the tradition of music mixed with the tunes of new technologies, and that’s evolution and innovation at the same time. We also believe that Psy-trance and its connection to nature gather people to celebrate life. TMN

Indian develops selfpowered video camera
Computer scientist Shree K. Nayar from the Columbia University has invented the world’s first fully self-powered video camera that can produce an image each second, indefinitely, of a well-lit indoor scene. Nayar designed a pixel that not only can measure incident light (a ray of light that strikes a surface) but also converts the incident light into electric power. At the heart of any digital camera is an image sensor, a chip with millions of pixels. The key enabling device in a pixel is the photodiode which produces an electric current when exposed to light. The photodiode in a camera pixel is used in the photoconductive mode while in a solar cell it is used in the photovoltaic model.

SHOLAY RELEASED
DUSOKUTE
“M
argarita With A Straw” is a film by Sonali Bose in which the protagonist Laila (Kalki Koechlin) suffers from cerebral palsy, and needs help even to visit the bathroom. A particular song ‘Dusokute’ has significance in the film. The song shows Laila who is the lyricist of her college band, using the Assamese word ‘Dusokute’ meaning ‘in the eyes’ in her composition to impress Nima, a boy from Assam whom she loves. The song was originally part of composer-singer Joi Barua’s Assamese album ‘Looking Out of the Window’ (2010). The word has been retained from the original composition, while the rest of the song has been written in Hindi by Prasoon Joshi. The director included this rocking song as she was bowled over by its “anthemic” feel. According to Joi Barua, “This was a song done looking back at life, when I was a student of Gauhati Commerce College. Those times gave me a terrific feeling - a kinetic energy or force. That was the genesis of the song”.

rmila Mahanta is all set to make her Bollywood debut with the film 'Pareshaanpur'. She had her share of success in regional cinema and now she steps into the big world. She has worked in five films and all of them were in different languages which she feels expands the horizon of an actor. We liked her frankness and openness and were impressed by her warmth and attitude during the interview. Read excerpts from the interview:
TM: How long have you been an actor? And from where did you start? Urmila: The acting bug caught me somewhere in school and it never let go of me. I remember attending my first acting workshop when I was in the sixth standard. That was to be my first brush with the world called acting and it sparked a passion in me that continues to rage till this day. My professional career as an actor has been started when I got into FTII (Film & Television Institute of India) holding the 2nd rank in all India entrance exams. I beg my first feature film (Tamil) as main lead in the first year of FTII with UTV Movies. Before getting into feature films, I did various nationally- internationally acclaimed short films, plays and TV series. TM: How did you bag this film? Urmila: One of my seniors from FTII, introduced me to our director Dilip K Mukharaiya and he must have visualized the character within me so he took a week long audition and selected me for the main female lead for this film. TM: So far all the four films that you have

worked in are in different languages. What was your experience? Urmila: My experience was very remarkable, because as an actor I got the opportunity to learn and explore various cultures and different styles of film making. One thing I have learned after doing films in more than 5 languages is that the language is not a bar for an actor whereas it actually expands the horizon of an actor. TM: What made you say yes for 'Pareshaanpur'? Urmila: The storyline of the movie and my character in the film are what appealed me the most along with the way of narration by Mukharaiya Sir. I found him as a man with clear vision and sense of Humor to recreate a comic situation in serious atmosphere. TM: Did you relate to your role in the film? If yes, then how Urmila: It was quite different from real me, I have never associated myself with such background or atmosphere in which my character dwells. TM: What are you expecting from this film? Urmila: This is supposed to be my first Hindi feature film, so I am eagerly waiting for the release of the movie. I am expecting this film will also turn as a big hit in the box office like my other regional films. TM: Share your experience as an actress. Urmila: As an actor I enjoyed the journey of my character, as I already said the character was different than me, so it was quite challenging to portray. I hope I did justice with the character. I am very happy to share screen space with my renowned seniors (FTII) like Asrani, Shakti Kapoor and Pitobash along with Manoj Joshi, Raj Zutshi, Ramesh Goel, Sunil Pal and many more veteran actors in my very first Hindi film itself.
