NEW LAPIERRE SEATPOST A new Lapierre dropper post with three different travels: 100mm, 125mm & 150mm. With 27.5” and 29” tyres now standard, the new emerging trend is plus tyres. Our tests were conclusive. The 27.5”plus tyres offer an entirely new riding experience, with improved traction, braking performance, and stability. Skilled riders will find them fun and capable; whilst for rookies they offer the ultimate in control, traction and above all, confidence building capabilities. The extra security plus tyres provide immediately helps put at ease more nervous riders. If you want to tame those pesky obstacles and smooth out a bumpy ride, look no further. You’ll find them on our Edge + and various Overvolt models.

For maximum versatility, each Overvolt AM can be mounted with plus format wheels (2.7 - 3.0 tyres) by simply changing the rear hangers of the bike. These rear hangers, as well as the Lapierre 27.5â&#x20AC;&#x153;+ e-bike wheels are available for sale.

TECH TALK ALUMINIUM & CARBON

The material used as the base for your frame affects it’s quality and performance. We work round the clock to perfect our specialist aluminum and carbon layups.

ALUMINIUM Working with specialist aluminium providers we have exclusive access to our high end aluminium, Supreme 6. 12% more resistant and 1.5% lighter than the widely used aluminium 7005, it has an exceptional longevity and is available on certain select models.

CARBON Carbon fibre is both a science and an art – and the result is black magic. We built our first carbon frames in 2003, and well over a decade of hard-won specialist knowledge sets us apart. We still build them by hand. One piece may look like another, but carbon is incredibly adaptable. It can bend and absorb vibration, be extremely stiff, or anything in between. Think of an F1 car’s wings withstanding tonnes in aerodynamic load without flex, then shattering like glass in a crash. Compare that with an airliner on take-off. See its wingtips flex by feet, over and over, never failing. Both very different. Both carbon fibre. 14

The secret is building it right.

HOW WE DO IT Carbon’s nature is partly created by the layup – how the fibres are arranged – and partly by the fibres themselves. We use four types at Lapierre, and we know how to get the best of each one. They’re rated by how many tonnes they resist before snapping. The ‘modulus’ bit simply means ‘measure,’ and refers to Young’s modulus. It’s a measure of elastic, or non-permanent, stretch. In our MTBs we use: -High Resistance -Intermediate Modulus -High Modulus

By combining these (using science, art and long experience) we engineer flex, strength and stiffness into the exact areas they’re needed. High Resistance fibre is great for absorption and damping – something you may want in seatposts, seatstays or entire frames – while High Modulus is stiff for pedalling efficiency. Each frame has a different choice of fibres in order to correspond to the different usage and stresses that will be placed on it.

COMPLEX PROCESS As vital as the layup is, it’s only part of the challenge. The mould is absolutely key – the quality of the frame is dictated by the quality of the mould. Just building it is hard. It’s a huge investment, and it has to be perfect. It takes several prototypes. As the first frames emerge, so do the tests. The quality is tested on the surfaces, the structure, the resin, fibre cohesion, joints, geometry and more… and even after that, we’re not done. Prototypes instead go off to be tested – principally by Team FDJ on the road, and downhill legend Nico Vouilloz on dirt. Only then are the final tweaks made, the process perfected, and production ready to roll.

The Overvolt AM Carbon is a revolutionary trail bike that pushes e-powered design to new heights. Its combination of lightweight carbon chassis, innovative mass centralization and cutting-edge technology creates something special â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a truly all-mountain electric bike.

Unsure if you want plus tyres or not? To change between 27.5â&#x20AC;? wheels and 27.5â&#x20AC;?+, Lapierre created an innovative and simple dropout that just needs to be inversed. Making life easy.

The challenge given to Lapierre engineers was to optimize the weight distribution to improve the ride feel. To achieve that we lowered the centre of gravity, putting the battery close to the bottom bracket, and centered it in the bike. The whole is as integrated as possible, with a shorter chainstay to further improve the playfulness of the ride.

Carbon was the only choice in order to achieve our aims in terms of design and technology. The unrivalled advantages in terms of stiffness/weight enabled us to finish with a frame 15 to 25% lighter than the alloy frame.

METRIC SHOCK The new standard coming in this year. A longer shock body, which lowers friction and improves sensitivity. RockShox found that to emulate the improvements of the Pike fork onto the rear shock they need to have a longer shock body for an equivalent travel. The new metric shock improves the overall ride feel of the bike, elevating you to trail god status.

Lapierre took the decision to use the new wheel standard for the many advantages it offers. Increased stiffness results in more effective and more precise bike handling. The wider rear wheel also enables a shorter chainstay for a more playful ride. Suspension pivots can be placed wider apart and therefore stiffer. Boost also improves clearance on the forks and the rear. The result: an all-round better ride.

(Supra Link Technology) Designed by Lapierre engineers specifically for this rig and inspired by MX. Single pivot kinematics with a suspension curve that maximizes sensitivity on small shocks and becomes ultra-progressive at the end of the curve to avoid bottoming out. The unique linkage system optimizes the suspension curve, while the main pivot point position limits the impact of pedalling on the suspension.

The head angle has 2 degrees of adjustment in order to get the perfect angle desired.

ULTIMATE ENDURO MACHINE Progressive race geometry and OST+ suspension for control, efficiency and more aggressive descending prowess. The Spicy is the machine for riders wanting to ride fast in rough steep terrain without compromising on pedaling efficiency.

RACE GEOMETRY The race machine developed by Nico Vouilloz for the Enduro World Series. Slack, long and low to attack aggressive steep trails. The Spicy is also bottle cage compatible for race conditions.

METRIC SHOCK The new standard coming in for this year. A longer shock body, which lowers friction and improves sensitivity. RockShox found that to emulate the improvements of the Pike fork onto the rear shock they need to have a longer shock body for an equivalent travel. The new metric shock improves the overall ride feel of the bike, elevating you to trail god status.

RACE GEOMETRY The new XR is more dynamic for better control. With a shorter chainstay (-5mm compared to 2016) and longer front triangle (Reach is +20mm compared to 2016), specced with a shorter stem; the ride is more responsive and handling is improved.

Taking knowledge gained from OST+ the suspension on the XR has been totally reworked for a better comfort in descent, and a more dynamic fun ride. The new metric shock improves ride feel, and the new design also leave more space around the bottle cage.

OPTIMISED STIFFNESS /WEIGHT RATIO The key aim for our engineers was to make a lightweight ultra-efficient ride. The full carbon frame has an improved stiffness/ weight ratio over previous models to make it the ultimate race machine. Full carbon pivots are a lightweight adaptation of OST+ technology, keeping weight down, but ensuring easy maintenance.

Lapierre patent pending Trap Door Technology integrates the Di2 battery neatly in the frame, and can also be used to integrate the e:i Shock Auto battery. A lowered centre of gravity for more efficient pedalling and easy access to batteries for maintenance.

LATEST TECHNOLOGIES Boost & Metric Shock complete the update, and the XR is also dropper seatpost compatible. Higher end models are RS1 and Eagle equipped.

RACING IMPROVES THE BREED – WE KNOW IT, YOU KNOW IT AND RACERS KNOW IT. TEAM FDJ (FRANCAISE DES JEUX), SPONSORED BY THE FRENCH NATIONAL LOTTERY, HAS PARTNERED WITH LAPIERRE FOR 15 YEARS. It’s brought success. This year Arnaud Demare took the first French win at Milan-San Remo in over 20 years, while Team FDJ took its first TT victory in a similar period with the brand new Aerostorm DRS. Such outstanding results only bolster recent wins in the world’s biggest races – including l’Alpe d’Huez on the Tour de France, and stages of the Vuelta a Espana and Giro d’Italia – in demonstrating their strength. There’s depth to that strength, too. Team FDJ has dominated the hard-fought world of Cyclo Cross, taking the French Championships no fewer than eight times. PARTNERS IN DESIGN FDJ is heavily involved in the development of all our carbon road bikes. Our engineers are regular fixtures at test sessions, pushing development with testers, technicians and riders. TECH TALK R&D / FDJ A PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP Lapierre carbon road bikes are all developed in close partnership with the FDJ cycling team. ENGINEERING PROCESS Lapierre engineers work closely with the FDJ R&D department at the University of BesanĂ§on. The FDJ team put forward their needs and brief to Lapierreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s R&D team, who study it and develop the brief in conjunction with them. Lapierre then work on the product development with the FDJ technicians involved at every step. TESTING PROCESS Dedicated test sessions are organized firstly with test members of the FDJ R&D department and then selected team riders. Training camps are often used to test the bikes with further riders. END RESULTS The finished product is then used on UCI World Tour races prior to arriving in shops. This process has resulted in : The Aerostorm DRS riding to the first ever FDJ Time Trial victories in its first few months of use in early 2016 The Xelius SL taking Arnaud Demare to victory in Milan-San Remo in 2016, and Thibaut Pinot to stage victory in the 2015 Tour de France The Aircode taking Thibaut Pinot to third place and best young rider in the 2014 Tour de France The Pulisum finishing 10th in its very first UCI race, the 2015 Paris Roubaix in the hands of Arnaud Demare

TECH TALK CARBON Carbon fibre is both a science and an art – and the result is black magic. We built our first carbon frames in 2003, and well over a decade of hardwon specialist knowledge sets us apart. We still build them by hand. One piece may look like another, but carbon is incredibly adaptable. It can bend and absorb vibration, be extremely stiff, or anything in between. Think of an F1 car’s wings withstanding tonnes in aerodynamic load without flex, then shattering like glass in a crash. Compare that with an airliner on take off. See its wingtips flex by feet, over and over, never failing. Both very different. Both carbon fibre. The secret is building it right.

By combining these (using science, art and long experience) we engineer flex, strength and stiffness into the exact areas they’re needed.

High Resistance fibre is great for absorption and damping – something you may want in seatposts, seatstays or entire frames – while Very High Modulus is very stiff for pedalling efficiency. Yet that ‘Very High Modulus’ tag is no joke. It’s incredibly stiff. It’s so stiff, in fact, only the Xelius road racer can use it. The Pulsium, Aircode and even the Aerostorm DRS don’t use anything beyond the already very stiff High Modulus, because rider fatigue is a higher priority for them. Elsewhere, the new Cross Carbon is entirely created from High Resistance fibres, for maximum compliance, traction and strength.

Two years in development, does the innovative Aerostorm DRS work? Just weeks after its debut, the bike gave FDJ its first Team Time Trial victory in 21 years.

Inspired by Formula One’s aerodynamic achievements, the Drag Reduction System (DRS) takes the complete approach to performance. New carbon airfoil tubes run seamlessly into a fully integrated cockpit: the frame, fork, stem and bar work as a single, sharply drag-reducing section. The integration takes in the brakes, specially created for a low and narrow profile. Aero is aided by further shaping, yet despite their slippery exterior, braking efficiency is improved. At the same time, that all-important frame stiffness is up while weight has dropped. The rear triangle is 30 percent stiffer for superb efficiency, while the advanced nature of our carbon means it’s one of the lightest TT bikes out there – the medium Version Team FDJ is just 8.1kg.

SHARPER HANDLING Aero is only part of its success. Geometry is completely reworked, with sized-down frames getting longer top tubes, steeper seat angles and longer wheelbases for more confidence-inspiring handling. All without sacrificing any of that race-winning sharpness. It’s an aggressive race geometry and a winning riding position. As with aero, handling gains are part of an integrated approach. Heavy Di2 batteries sit low in the frame in patent-pending TDT (Trap Door Technology) mounts, which combine easy use with a low centre of gravity that further boosts cornering. Those running cables will love the clever guide with its quick-to-remove cable stop inside the seat tube, too. Both aerodynamics and mechanics benefit.

SHAPED BY COMPETITION Developed by Lapierre in conjunction with FDJ technicians and even an aircraft engineer, the Aerostorm DRS was exhaustively tested by computer simulations, in windtunnels, at the Roubaix velodrome and by riders Steve Morabito and Thibaut Pinot. It’s no wonder it’s so effective. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the result looks stunning. In fact, the only thing that doesn’t notice the Aerostorm DRS pass is the air it slips through.

We could say this bike is fast up a climb, but nothing speaks louder than results. The Xelius SL won l’Alpe d’Huez in the 2015 Tour de France, in the hands of Team FDJ’s Thibaut Pinot.

LoUD E NOuGH ? It’s a bike that carves up the roads, not the rider. The seatstays of the all-carbon frame curve from the rear axle directly to the top tube, allowing controlled flex that boosts comfort and traction. Our 3D Tubular Technology also reduces mechanical stresses – and yet the SL carbon layup ensures it stays extremely light.

Other innovations include Power Box, which sees the headtube, bottom bracket shell and rear triangle working as a single ultra-efficient form. Lateral stiffness is enviable, with little flex even under the hardest pedalling, for the fastest possible acceleration and sprinting.

ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE Di2 batteries are tucked next to the bottom bracket for a low, centralised mass, but you’ll have to look closely – Trap Door Technology means lines stay smooth. Access stays simple. Team FDJ’s mechanics and performance coaches asked us to create it. So we did.

TECH TALK XELIUS SL DISC How do you make the fastest bikes faster? The answer is surprising. You make them stop harder. Hydraulic discs give more power, a lighter lever action, greater consistency and superior performance in the wet. They also allow lighter wheels with thinner, shape-optimised sidewalls that won’t wear out. What’s more, minor distortions in the rim won’t cause energy-sapping rub. All Xelius SL Disc models use hydraulic calipers and lightweight 140mm discs for the ultimate balance of stopping power and low weight. Routing for the rear hose is internal to keep aero smooth and visual lines clean, while even the carbon fibre is bespoke. More braking power means more heat, so the Xelius SL – like our other disc-specific frames – uses a special High TG resin to combat those higher temperatures.

Rough roads and the unique challenges of the spring classics require a very special approach. And the Pulsium is an endurance race bike with a serious trick up its sleeve. The key to mastering the cobbles is Shock Absorption Technology. An elastomer connection between the seat and top tubes absorbs and damps impacts, stopping them propagating through the rest of the bike and upsetting the handling. This gives far greater comfort on rough surfaces, which lets you ride longer and harder without fatigue.

STIFF UNDER POWER This compliance works independently of Power Box, which creates stiffness exactly where it’s needed – from headstock to rear axle via the cranks – by treating them as one continuous carbon fibre structure. The result is excellent lateral stiffness for maximum pedalling efficiency and a crisp, urgent power delivery. Sandwich-type rear dropouts boost stiffness and shifting so much we’ve made them standard on all our carbon road bikes.

TECH TALK SENSIUM DISC How do you make the fastest bikes faster? The answer is surprising. You make them stop harder. Hydraulic discs give more power, a lighter lever action, greater consistency and superior performance in the wet. They also allow lighter wheels with thinner, shapeoptimised sidewalls that won’t wear out. What’s more, minor distortions in the rim won’t cause energy-sapping rub. All Sensium Disc models use hydraulic calipers and lightweight 140mm discs for the ultimate balance of stopping power and low weight. Routing for the rear hose is internal to keep aero smooth and visual lines clean, while even the carbon fibre is bespoke. More braking power means more heat, so the Sensium – like our other discspecific frames – uses a special High TG resin to combat those higher temperatures. The Sensium’s calipers mount with the popular Flatmount Standard, while the wheels take 135mm rear and 100mm front axles with QR skewers for maximum compatibility.

With its new-for-2017 frame inspired by the cutting edge technology of the Sensium, the Audacio is a lightweight, endurance-focused design that’s perfect for Sunday rides. Big or small. The Sensium’s influence is clear across the rear of the aluminium frame, where curved seatstays run into a similarly curved toptube. It’s a layout that absorbs road buzz effectively on its own, but we didn’t stop there. Large 25c tyres, a redesigned carbon fork and softer bartape all play their part in the Audacio’s smooth, fatigue-reducing ride.

Better still, the multi-butted Supreme 5 alloy frame and carbon fibre fork are fully 500g lighter than the outgoing modelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, while maintaining the fantastic lateral stiffness necessary for vivid acceleration. Endurance geometry means a stable, confidence-inspiring yet racy character thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up for riding all day.

It’s a design that creates a natural compliance that enhances both comfort and traction on poor surfaces. Wide, 28c tyres mean assured grip and further insulation from road buzz. Race-developed for racers, the Cross Carbon is brand new for 2017. And while it delivers all the expected benefits of low weight and high stiffness, it scores big in another key area – shaping.

The Cross Carbon is ergonomically sculpted for carrying. The asymmetric toptube curves to give superior comfort and security on the shoulder, while remaining stiff and strong under power. It’s something even the best aluminium tubing just can’t do. Brake and gear lines are routed along the top of the frame, well out of the way.

The full-carbon frame and fork marries highly efficient power transfer to fantastic ease of use, with integrated Di2 routing and our innovative Trap Door Technology keeping expensive electrical componentry sealed away from harm. As the name implies, battery and maintenance access remains simple.

Hydraulic brakes bite on 160mm discs for powerful stopping, and as they’re beyond the reach of the worst mud and water, performance stays high in the filthiest conditions. To fully combat the extra twisting forces and more extreme heat generated, the Cross Carbon runs a 12x142mm hollow rear axle. For full compatibility with existing wheelsets, the bike can also run 10mm QR rear axles via an official adaptor, and take cantilever brakes.

The Cross SL is an accessible alloy machine – yet extremely competitive. With geometry based on the Cross Carbon, and testing performed by Team FDJ riders, that’s no real surprise. Built from Supreme 5 aluminium, and fronted by an impact-damping carbon fork on a tough alloy steerer, it’s the perfect ride for newcomers and purists alike. The Cross SL is also available in size XS for young riders.
